OMAK – Some of theprofessional rodeo world’s topcowboys and cowgirls aresigned up to compete at the80th annual Omak Stampede,set for Aug. 8-11.

The 78th World-FamousSuicide Race, Indianencampment, three parades, anart show and other Western fun

accompanythe rodeo.

Showtimes are 7p.m.Thursday,Friday andSaturday, and2 p.m. Sundayin the OmakStampedeArena, 421StampedeDrive E.

Tickets areavailable fromthe Stampedeticket officenext to thearena in EastSide Park,online or byphone.

Pricesvary,depending ontheperformanceand section.Special pricesare offered onThursday forfamily nightand onSunday.

Fans canexpect a fullrange ofProfessional

Rodeo Cowboys’ Associationevents and Women’sProfessional Rodeo Associationbarrel racing. A running of theWorld-Famous Suicide Racecomes after each rodeoperformance. Activities begintoday, Aug. 7, with opening ofthe Davis Shows carnival at thewest end of East Side Park.

The encampment gets underway Thursday evening withcampers night, as does theOmak Western and Native ArtShow at The CourtyardDowntown, 28 N. Main St. Bothrun through Sunday.

Preceding the Thursdaynight rodeo is the annualWrangler Kids’ Night, startingat 4 p.m. in the Omak StampedeArena. Youngsters can competein a variety of games; prizes willbe given.

Thursday is family night atthe rodeo.

Slack competition in timedevents will be at 9 a.m. Friday.Admission is free.

Slack is offered when thereare more contestants signed upfor a timed event than can berun during the regular rodeoperformances. The extracompetitive time also allowscontestants to make a showingat more than one rodeo perweekend.

Friday is “Tough Enough toWear Pink” night, with $1 fromeach rodeo ticket going to thecampaign to raise awarenessand funds for breast cancerresearch. Stampede officialsurge rodeo participants andfans to wear pink.

Sunday is Patriot Day insupport of U.S. troops, with red,white and blue clothingencouraged by Stampedeofficials. Veterans get in freewith military ID.

Each rodeo performancebegins with the Parade of Flags,a drill involving horses andriders carrying flags sponsoredby area businesses, clubs andagencies. About 60-65 entriesare expected this year.

Arena runs by royalty follow,with Stampede Queen BreannaHowell, Tonasket, reigning overthe event.

Assisting the cowboys will bebullfighters Tim Vredenburgand Rowdy Barry, and clownand barrelman J.J. Harrison,who grew up in Okanogan andwill give a special performanceduring the Thursday rodeo. Thespecialty act for Friday,Saturday and Sunday is WIFMX, a motorcycle stunt act.

The announcer will be SteveKenyon. Stock contractors areBig Bend, Ritzville, and Flying5, Pomeroy.

Suicide Race fans wearingbooster buttons, available onthe grounds and in localbusinesses for $5 apiece, will beadmitted to special viewingareas on the hill and on the dikein the park.

A rodeo ticket stub from theperformance preceding eachrace also grants admission tothe dike area.

Viewing also is available

from many areas of the arenafor rodeo ticket holders.

Concessions will operate allweekend on the grounds.Vendors range from local serviceorganizations to visiting souvenirshops, and products range fromburgers to cowboy hats.

• Okanogan Valley Farmers’Market in its customarylocation, Legion Park on NorthSecond Avenue in Okanogan,from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

• Post-rodeo dances Fridayand Saturday nights, withseparate admission, in thearena dance area. The NightRiders will perform.

Fees are charged for parkingon the grounds at $5 per vehicleper performance, or $15 for aweekend pass. Flaggers will beon hand to help direct traffic atthe end of each rodeoperformance. Separate parkingfees apply in the encampmentarea.

OMAK – The Davis Showscarnival opens at 5 p.m. today,Aug. 7, at the west end of EastSide Park.

The carnival will runthroughout Stampede.

Carnival armbands, whilethey last, will be sold at adiscount at the Stampede office.Discounted sales end at 5 p.m.,or earlier if Stampede’s

armband supply runs out,Stampede Office ManagerSarah Grooms said.

After that, armbands will beavailable in the carnival area.Individual ride tickets also willbe sold.

The carnival opens at 5 p.m.Thursday, 4 p.m. Friday and 11a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Itcloses at 8 p.m. Sunday.

The last day is “buddy day,”with a discount offered whentwo armbands are purchased.

Along with a variety of ridesfor all ages, the carnival offers amidway with games of chance.

Sunday should producesome spectacular rides, with 13riders signed to go, led byProfessional Rodeo CowboysAssociation’s No. 1 rider andColumbia River Circuit’s No. 3Ryan Gray of Cheney.

Also on Sunday are BobbyMote of Culver, Ore. (CRC No. 2and PRCA No. 4) and StevenPeebles of Redmond, Ore. (CRCNo. 1, PRCA No. 21).

Mote is the defending CRCbareback champ.

OMAK — Rodeo fansanywhere in the world will havean opportunity to experiencethe Omak Stampede this year.

Announcer Steve Kenyon,the owner and operator ofProRodeoLive.com, will notonly be calling the play-by-playfor fans in attendance at thisyear’s Stampede, but he willalso be broadcasting the eventfor potentially millions ofsatellite radio and onlinelisteners.

“This will be the first timeanything like this has ever beendone, obviously for Omak,”Kenyon said. Kenyon willbroadcast the Sunday

performance of Stampede onRural Radio, which is channel80 on Sirius XM Radio, as wellas his own ProRodeoLive.com

site. This is Kenyon’s sixth year

of broadcasting elite-levelrodeos through ProRodeo

Live.com and he said thereaction from fans has beenoverwhelmingly positive.

“This creates a whole newopportunity for professionalrodeo to be exposed live to fansall over,” he said. “I’ve heardeveryone from truck drivers torodeo contestants’ families.Omak will basically be the thirdevent we’ve broadcast live (thisyear).”

Kenyon said there are alimited number of times andplaces when rodeos can bebroadcast, and he can be in onlyone place at a time, so it wasfortunate that Omak fit into thebroadcasting schedule.

“It’s a pretty elite schedule,”he said, pointing out that theNational Finals Rodeo was thefirst rodeo he did for a livebroadcast and continues to beone of his main stops everyyear.

Kenyon said Omak wasselected for the broadcastpartially because of timing, butalso because Rural Radio andProRodeoLive.com “want tocarry the best quality event.Logistically, it works for me, butit’s the kind and quality of eventthat they want to put on SiriusXM.”

Kenyon said he does have tochange the way he announcesthe rodeo a little bit for theSunday show, because his voicewill be going out to both fansinside the arena and around theworld.

However, “My firstresponsibility is still to theOmak Stampede,” he said.“Entertaining the houseaudience is still going to be thefirst thing that we try to do.”

OMAK – Stampede fans canget a peek at the founderssquare and encampment trailproposed to link the OmakStampede Arena andencampment area in East SidePark.

A display will be set up at theeast end of the ticket office, 421Stampede Drive E., to show theproposed design.

Omak Rodeo and NativeAmerican Center member KurtDanison said the paved trail hasbeen proposed since the arenawas replaced in 2009.

The display will be staffed byvolunteers and should be openat least three or four hours aday during rodeo weekend.

The city, which owns thepark and arena, included thetrail in its park plan andOkanogan-Omak Rotary Clubput up $40,000 for parkimprovements.

Some of the money wenttoward new restrooms near theColville Confederated Tribes’dance pavilion, but the bulk of itremains for the trail.

As the result of the design“charrette” – an intense,compressed design exercise –Washington State Universitystudents offered renderings of thepark, founders square concourseand trail.

“They had a lot of goodideas,” Danison said.

A common theme forresidents and students wasinclusion of a horseshoe design.

ORNAC later contracted withWenatchee landscapearchitecture firm Project GroundWork to refine the ideas. Arendering of the proposal will beavailable for people to viewduring Stampede.

Danison “is hoping to havesome type of design before

Stampede so it can be displayedand we can promote the sale ofbricks and other items that will beincorporated into the founderssquare and the trail,” committeemember Connie Thomas said.

The design wouldincorporate pavers, which couldbe sold to sponsors, and ahorseshoe motif. It’s not yetknown what the horseshoeswould be made of, but theywould be embedded in the trail.

It’s proposed to have adesign on the horseshoes,possibly stamped or etchedonto the surface.

Regardless of how they’remade, the trail would need tocomply with Americans with

Disabilities Act requirements,Danison said. That might meanthe horseshoe designs wouldhave to comply or that the trailincludes a smooth portionsuitable for wheelchairs,crutches and walkers.

Also proposed is some sortof gateway to mark thetransition from the rodeo areato the encampment area.

Longtime Stampedevolunteer Ed Thiele, a memberof ORNAC, said if the trail canbe built, “I think it’swonderful.”

He said it’s long been adream to have better accessbetween the rodeo andencampment.

OMAK – Dancing,drumming, stick games andother activities are plannedAug. 8-11 during the OmakStampede Indian Encampment.

The event will be in thetribal dance pavilion on the eastend of East Side Park.

Thursday is campers’ night.Grand entries are planned at

7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.The host drum is Wellpinit-based Iron Spirit, which was the2012 encampment winner.

Masters of ceremonies willbe Emery Wilson of St.Ignatius, Mont., and ArnieBaptiste of Penticton, B.C. Thearena director is WalterWilliams of Nespelem.

Dancing contests areplanned for junior girls andboys, ages 7-12; teen girls andboys, ages 13-17; adult women

and men, ages 18-49, andgolden age women and men,age 50 and older. Several stylesof dancing will be featured.

A drum contest will runsimultaneously with thedancing competition. The headdrum judge will be GeorgeMeninick Jr.

Special dances include ahorse tail special and a suyapi(white person) special.

A dinner, open to everyone,is planned Saturday.

The stick game tournamentwill run in conjunction with thedancing and drumming.

Tournaments are plannedfor children, three-personteams and three- to five-personteams.

The encampment areaincludes a variety of vendorsoffering food, crafts and otheritems. Many families also set uptepees as their private homesfor the weekend.
