>> Overview

> Vehicle concept> In Canada, the new smart fortwo electric drive will be available in both

coupé and cabriolet variants with almost all of the same features andoptions as are available for the gasoline variant, making the electric drive a no-compromise move into electric mobility.

> With its electric drive system, the smart fortwo electric drive embodies the concept of an emission-free vehicle. Its introduction is another step forward in the use of innovative drive technologies which are suitable and efficient for everyday use.

> With the smart fortwo electric drive, the brand is pursuing an ambitious goal – the production of a technically mature, attractive city car which releases zero emissions locally. The smart fortwo electric drive can be charged at a conventional household power socket (level I, 120 V) or with a 240 V level II charging station. A full battery charge is sufficient for a range of around 145 kilometers in urban traffic, offering full driving pleasure and flexibility to smart customers.

>> Overview

> Innovations

> 55 kW permanent magnet motor providing fast acceleration with 130 Nm (96 lb.-ft.) of torque, all immediately available.

> Transmission with fixed-gear ratio (1-speed forward/reverse) and differential, which means that switching gears is no longer required – a major advantage in heavy urban traffic. The motor simply changes its direction of rotation when in reverse.

> Water-cooled lithium-ion batteries manufactured by Deutsche ACCUmotive, housed between the axles in a space-saving manner. This means that there are no space-related limitations for the smart fortwoelectric drive. The interior compartment and trunk are exactly the same size as for the gasoline variant, enabling the smart fortwo electric drive to be a no-compromise move into electric mobility. The battery position also allows for a lower center of gravity, giving the car better driving dynamics.

> Temperature-controlled air conditioning with battery cooling system.

> Charging of battery via regenerative breaking.

> Pre-heating/pre-cooling of interior (pre-conditioning) when car is plugged in to ensure a cabin temperature that is comfortable for use.

Charging - long charging time:

> Users/customers seldom drive more than 30-40 km per day

> A complete charging process on a normal household power outlet takes 16 hours from 0%-100% state of

charge. Most people do not drive their electric vehicles to 0%

> A complete charging process on a 240 V "level II" charging station takes approximately 8 hours, enough

time to fully charge the vehicle overnight.

> It is not necessary to wait until the vehicle is fully charged.

Range - low range:

> The range of the electric drive has been increased to 145km.

> Studies from Germany and the USA have shown that over 80% of commuters travel less than 50km per day

(Federal Statistical Office, Wiesbaden 2009)

> Customers with a commute of 50km per day will still be able to use the electric drive as a daily commuter;

for drivers with more than 50km per day, we recommend the installation of a level II 240 V charging station

for faster charging (approx. 3.5 hours from 20% to 80% state of charge)

Public charging - lack of infrastructure:

> Users prefer to charge at home or at work

> Public charging is often not necessary or often involves a detour. Charging at home or at work is most

times sufficient.

> The infrastructure is developing.

> Connected Services helps consumers find public charging stations and plan charging time.

Battery performance - uncertainty about battery performance:

> Standard warranty of 4 years/80,000 km applies for motor and battery and smart Canada is evaluating

an Extended Limited Warranty option for additional coverage.

>> FAQ

Electric Vehicles & Safety

> The smart fortwo electric drive incorporates safety precautions and has a high level of intrinsic safety including a seven-stage safety principle which incorporates the following points:

> Automatic shut off of the high-voltage on-board electrical systems if the cable jackets are damaged

> The high-voltage on-board electrical system is deactivated when the ignition is off

> Automatic shutoff of the high-voltage on-board electrical system if a connector is disconnected or becomes loose

> Contact protection

> Contacts point inwards

> The high-voltage on-board electrical system is deactivated in the event of an open circuit (an open cable, etc.)

> The high-voltage on-board electrical system is deactivated by crash sensors when an airbag is triggered

> What experience have you had with respect to the inflammability of lithium batteries during development? What experience have you had with respect to the crash safety of the batteries?

> Fundamentally, lithium batteries are combustible due to their material properties. The same also applies to other types of energy store e.g. fuel tanks. Through the application of an appropriate safety concept including, for example, installation as far as possible away from the primary impact areas combined with an additional safety reserve based on a sufficiently sturdy housing, the crash safety of Li-ion batteries can be brought up, at the least, to the level of conventional vehicles with fuel tanks. We see no increase in risk in this area.

The topics of batteries and high voltage create uncertainty amongmost consumers. Here, it is important to alleviate customer concerns

with clear and simple information in order to emphasize the safety and reliability of the smart fortwo electric drive.

>> FAQ

Range

> Temperature: if the battery is very cold before starting a journey, this affects the range, motor output, acceleration characteristics and achievable maximum speed. Charging will take longer at cold ambient temperatures.

> Additional energy consumption: additional items such as the heater, a/c or lights require energy. Activating these devices reduces the range.

> Driving behaviour: the range can be influenced by driving behaviour. Frequent acceleration as well as frequent driving at full load reduce the maximum range.

> Charge level: The performance of the vehicle depends on the charge level of the battery. At a charge level of below 11%, the acceleration capacity and achievable maximum speed are reduced.

> What happens if the battery runs out while driving?

> The drive system shuts off when the minimum battery charge levelspecified by the battery management system (BMS) is reached. This protects the battery from deep discharge. The drive system can be temporarily reactivated once in order to park the vehicle in a safe place by switching the ignition off and back on.

> The range has not significantly improved with the new battery for the 3rd

generation. Why?

> When developing a new vehicle as a whole, it is always necessary to find a sensible compromise in order to keep the costs, benefits and suitability for everyday use of the vehicle in balance. Our surveys of the users of vehicles of the previous generation, for example, found that most drivers placed more value on a higher speed. This is very important on city freeways, in particular. We gave this requirement priority over range because – as we also learnt – the range is more than adequate for most customers.

>> FAQ

Battery

> What effect do high outside temperatures or very low temperatures have on the smart fortwo electric drive?

> The vehicle is equipped with both a battery heating system and abattery cooling system for the high-voltage battery. This allows the vehicle to be operated in a very wide temperature window. At very high or very low outside temperatures, performance may be limited depending on the charge level of the high-voltage battery. The decisive factor here is not the ambient temperature, but the cell temperature within the battery. For example, at cell temperatures below -25 C, the battery can no longer output any power for technical reasons.

> Do you expect lithium shortages as production numbers increase?

> No. Lithium is available in large quantities on earth. Furthermore, all batteries are 95% recyclable by us or by recycling partners, allowing valuable raw materials to be reused.

> Are there any new features in terms of battery safety?

> The new battery also incorporates extensive safety precautions. A very sturdy housing and insulation of current-carrying parts within the battery are just two of the measures which protect the battery in a crash. The battery management system mmonitors every cell individually.

> Is the new battery more cost-effective?

> Yes, compared to the smart electric drive of the 2nd generation, we have made a big step in the right direction. Costs have been reduced by 40%. However, production numbers remain the decisive factor in terms of cost-effective battery technology. With the introduction of the new battery in our Mercedes-Benz vehicles as well, we will achieve production numbers which will reduce costs in the medium term.

> What is the manufacturer warranty on the battery?

> The normal smart Canada warranty applies to the electric drive. This is four years or 80,000 km, whichever occurs first.

>> FAQ

Battery> What is the weight difference between the gasoline and the electric drive

smart? What effects can be seen due to this? > The gasoline smart fortwo coupé and cabriolet weigh 820kg and 840kg,

respectively. The electric drive coupé and cabriolet weigh 900kg and 920kg, respectively, for a weight difference of 80 kg between the two models. The weight of the battery is the main cause of this difference. As the battery is housed underneath the driver and passenger seats, the effects can be noticed in the driving dynamics. The heavier weight causes a lower center of gravity, which results in better driving dynamics.

I want to buy one!> Can I lease the car?

> Yes, the car can be purchased, leased or financed. However, provincial rebates or incentives may vary depending on lease duration. Lease and finance rates will be announced closer to the start of sales date in Spring of 2013

> What kinds of rebates are available? > There is currently no national rebate available. However, the smart

fortwo electric drive does qualify for several provincial rebates currently available. In Ontario, a rebate of $8,500 is available. In Québec, this rebate is $8,000 and in B.C. it is $5,000. Please visit provincial websites to determine the limitations and restrictions that may apply for these rebates.

Charging> When is the optimal charging time?

> In principle, it makes no difference when the battery is chargedbecause there is no memory effect. Different hydro providers maycharge less for off-peak charging.

> How often does the battery have to be serviced? > Power control check: battery service every 20,000km or 1x annually> Replacement of desiccant cartridges: every 40,000km or after 2 years

> Does the battery become hot during operation? > Its temperature rises as energy is taken from it. This is why the

battery is cooled by a water heat exchanger. The air conditioning is also used if necessary in high-voltage applications. A battery management system continuously monitors the voltage, current andtemperature. If one of these parameters reaches a specified limit value, the electronics reduce the power. This rules out the possibility of overload.
