Please read instructions carefully before preparing your Registration Form

There is a $35 NON-REFUNDABLE registration fee. Please make this check payable to Bluegrass Area Basketmakers Seminar and enclose it with your registration form and a long, self-addressed, stamped envelope. NO youth under the age of 14 years may attend. Read the class descriptions carefully and be aware of weaving level, length of class, class price and any special tools needed to complete the basket. Several classes encompass several hours on two days. Be careful not to double book your time slots. Fill in your registration form completely. ALL information requested must be filled out legibly to insure your registration is not confused with someone else and so that we can contact you if a question arises. When you fill in your class requests please make sure the numbers of your classes are legible and that you have listed 2nd and 3rd choices in case your 1st choice class is full. Registration is on a first come first served basis for the first 220 registrants and MAY 1, 2013 is the LAST DAY for registration. When you send in your registration, send in separate checks for each of your 1st choice classes made out to the teacher of that class. These checks, made out to the teacher of each class, should be dated for June 18, 2013. Pay special attention to the DEADLINE: May 1, 2013. Absolutely NO refunds will be given after this date. (Special circumstances can be reviewed by the committee.) Fill out the Registration Form along with Lodging (remember, rooms are limited) and Meal Form and return with payment no later than MAY 1, 2013. Rooming and General Information

Due to the limited number of rooms available we encourage

participants to stay as many to a room as possible. Remember you are only in the rooms for a short time. People staying the entire seminar will be given priority on rooming.

If you pay for a quad for all nights but only list 1 or 2 roommates for any of those nights, you can be assured that someone will be assigned to your room. If no one is available to be placed in your room, you will be charged for the double or triple rate (whichever pertains to your situation.) Unfortunately we may not be able to determine this until the start of the seminar. Please bring your checkbook.

All rooms at the Educational Center have at least one set of bunk beds. Some rooms are furnished with a set of bunk beds and a full sized bed while the rest have two sets of bunk beds. If you and/or some of your roommates cannot safely use the top bunks please consider requesting a double room. Sheets and towels are provided. Please bring your own personal toiletries.

If a handicapped room or first floor room is requested, a physician’s statement must accompany the request when you register. NO ROOM ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE CHANGED AT THE TIME OF THE BASKET SEMINAR. There is an elevator on the porch to assist participants in reaching the lower levels of the Educational Center.

There are no TVs or phones in the rooms. There are phones available for use with a credit card or for collect calls. If you should need to be contacted for an emergency, the number for the Leadership Center is (270) 866-4215. Remember the Educational Center is on Eastern Daylight Time.

Campers – There is only one charge per night for campers or mobile homes regardless of how many people are staying in it. The hook ups for the RVs is electricity only, no water hook ups. You have a choice of 30 amps or 50 amps. (Only two 50 amp hook- ups are available and will be assigned on a first come basis.)

Check List

Bring tools such as pencil, measuring tape, sharp scissors, container for water (large enough to hold your reed), spring type clothes pins, sharp knife, awl or screwdriver, extra hand towel, spray bottle, and pliers. Again, pay attention to special tools, if requested by instructor, needed for your basket. If you have difficulty seeing, bring a high density light (Ott Lite) and extension cord.

Skill Level Guide

Beginner/All Levels: for those who are learning basic skills and above. Basic skills include start/stop weaving, twining and starting a base. Intermediate: for those who have some experience in start/stop, over/under weaving, twining and setting up a base and doing a basic rim. Advanced: for those who have mastered the basic skills and are ready to try new techniques and/or other creative methods. TUESDAY T-01 Sweetgrass Coasters 6 hours 1:00 – 9:00

Sweetgrass baskets are coiled of sweetgrass and southern long leaf pine needles and are lashed with strips of palmetto. Techniques taught will enable the students to design a variety of shapes and sizes with an emphasis on the side handle design. Tools will be furnished for class but you will need a pair of scissors. NO WATER required. Sizes vary.

This special tray is done in warm earthy colors and copper wire. Students will learn the different designs in twining and using two sizes of waxed cotton cord. Class time will include hand skills, neatness, tension and over all look of the basket. Glass beads cause the wonderful puckering effect. 4 ¼ “ across and 1 ¼” deep

This is a good way to practice a variety of stitches. Coiled pine needles around a variety of centers and stitched with nylon thread. Sizes vary.

Enjoy the rhythm of lattice twining with slotted base technique. Woven in cedar bark and dyed reed over a 3” glass vase with a wooden base, this little basket is both functional and versatile. Techniques include lattice twining and twill. 3 ¾” X 3 ½” X 3 ½”

Masterson appears as a normal market basket. It is sturdy and ready for work. The base is filled in and the walls are doubled. Students will learn about shaping to eliminate the “peanut” look to a basket with a D-handle. Using unpeeled willow, students will choose two prepared and dried hoops. The hoops are attached with God’s Eye weaving. Ribs are added progressively into the weaving. This is a fun basket and shaping is on an individual basis for your own unique creation.

T-07 “Jabez” 4” Nantucket 4 hours 1:00 – 5:00 This quick and easy basket was named Jabez because Jabez has so many wonderful and unique baskets being taught. This basket is new and has never been taught before. It is made of spaced dyed weavers and dyed staves. Multiple shades and colors will be available. Wood parts will be made from walnut or cherry. The ivory capped knob may

The Twill Treats has 12 Cherokee 1-3-5 twill designs. Each student can select any one design for class. The base layout will be simplified by starting in a corner and learning a 3/3 twill base. Students will also learn how to use a twill graph. There are 4 levels of weaving making this a good beginner twill. Intermediate and experienced weavers will find the more complex designs a

This very useful, beautiful market basket features the ever popular black, smoked and natural reed combination with natural and black spokes. The concepts you will learn are start/stop weaving, a triple twining pattern with 3 colors and a patchwork wrapped handle. It is

Wed. 8:00 – 5:00 We will be weaving twill diamonds…and lots of them! There are so many twill diamond possibilities that students will have some choice on which pattern to weave or whether to weave a different one on each side. This class will focus on understanding pattern changes, chase weaving a twill pattern, weaving a

The Mini Flower Pot will be available in cherry or walnut. The mold is a teacher mold. Learn the techniques needed to make a miniature Nantucket basket. Several tips are given during class. The staves on the Flower Pot are inserted vertically into the base. Also learn a new way to attach the handle without peening the bolt. 1 ¾” X 3” with handle.

W-21 Large Shopper 6 hours 8:00 – 3:00 The large shopper has a 6” X 12” rectangle woven Oak “herringbone” bottom, an oval top and approximately 10” deep excluding the solid Oak handle. All the material is from White Oak trees that grow in the Ozarks which I select, cut and prepare by hand using homemade tool, which my dad made and used, called a split knife. I will share all things

concerning White Oak and the “Owens Method” of rimming. Everyone should leave with a beautiful finished basket. $70 All Levels Billy Owens W-22 Anasazi 6 hours 8:00 – 3:00

This striking basket is coiled with just two colors (choice of 5 colors) over large paper rush. Students will learn to swap threads to create designs, use a CircleGuide to set the blocks easily and to set beads between rows.

Beginning with a double spoked base, series of spokes are added or split to give different layers of weaving, one set even looks like a picket fence! Basket is reed using both dyed and natural of various sizes. Sides are shallow. A

This surprisingly strong basket is woven on an oval wooden base over a special mold provided in class to assist in shaping. Techniques include Japanese weave, triple twine with step-up, 6 strand braid and lattice twined border. Woven with reed and Hamburg cane. 4” X 5” X 6 ½”

Traditional weaving methods are used to create Brickel. The base is twined with an unusual foot attached using dyed 3mm reed. Shaping is very important in creating this basket. Many shaping methods will be discussed in class so students can control the shape of their basket. The design around the top of the basket is made using 3mm

The design element in this market basket uses a combination of the Chitimacha Cow Eye and Worm Track to produce what appears to be an owl looking back at you. With a little imagination you can see his center brow and

Natural and black spokes are inserted into an ebony stained base and held in place with rows of 3-rod wale. The continuous weave is designed to increase and decrease an “over 2” design that is then embellished with round reed. The matchstick border

Many narrow spokes are inserted into the wood base to begin this basket. Techniques include 4-rod twining, a 2/2 twill, continuous over/under weave and a herringbone lashing on the false rim and the top rim. The herringbone lashing gives the

This magnificent classic buff willow creel can either be made as a pocketbook purse or as a fishing creel (with a hole in the lid.) A 3-part wooden mold is loaned in this class. A “D” shaped base is woven and attached to the mold. Stakes are scallomed on and the siding is a

mixture of waling and French randing. Hole straps are woven in to the back of the basket. The lid is made similarly to the base and custom fit to the basket. A branched twig is included in the lid weaving for lid closure. A custom leather and solid brass harness is included in the materials fee. Your base will rest on an attached woven stand which give it a nice height to show it off. This has two rims, and both will be lashed with wax linen. SHAKER BOXES

These Shaker boxes are not baskets in the strictest sense of the word. They are really boxes constructed using thin veneer for the sides and thin boards for the tops and bottoms. No glue will be used as the Shakers used copper tacks and wooden pegs to hold everything together. The Shakers used these boxes to store a variety of

small items like beans, seeds, sewing items and herbs. The Shakers usually did not finish the insides because the finish might impart an unpleasant tast to dry foods. Students will finish their boxes at home and may finish the interiors if they wish. 4 different sizes Special tools: apron and safety glasses or goggles PLEASE NOTE: This is the same class that was taught last year. If you took the class in 2012 you will NOT be placed in the class for 2013. Limit 10 students. In this class you will make 3 items. One is a large box with a swing handle. A second is an open top carrier with a fixed handle somewhat like a basket. The third item is also an open carrier with a dividing handle

down the center dividing it into two parts. While boxes are usually not finished on the inside, these two open carriers should be finished on all surfaces. TEACHER BIOGRAPHIES

SALLY ANAYA – Sally has been weaving baskets for over 23

years, and teaching for 18 years. Designing helps to express her own creative process, combining conceptual basis with choices of materials and textures, while exploring specific techniques in bound weaves. Sally has taught for conferences and private workshops throughout the USA and Mexico. Her work has been shown in numerous juried shows

in the Seattle area, receiving the Hand Weavers Guild of America Award. She is currently working on her book covering a history of bound weaves and a selection of her original patterns. WILL BONDURANT –Will, often called “Mr. B,” has worked

with wood for over 50 years and taught high school woodworking for 20 years. He has been making shaker boxes after the Shaker fashion for about 9 years. This has been a hobby and part time source of income for him. His boxes are sold at the Kentucky Artisan Center in Berea, at Completely Kentucky in Frankfort, and at Soaps & Such in Stanford,

Kentucky. ANNE BOWERS – Anne lives in the Eastern panhandle of West

Virginia where she teaches and designs her baskets. Coming from a production weavers background, she brings that experience to her students. She is in her 31st year of weaving. Her work has been featured in several galleries, exhibits and magazines. She has taught on 2 basketry cruises.

Her goal is to help her students expand their knowledge of basket weaving.

SANDY BULGRIN – Sandy has been teaching basket weaving for 20 years, having started by instructing 4-H kids, which she continues today. Along with basketweaving Sandy works with gourds, she enjoys incorporating basketweaving techniques into the gourd. Sandy teaches at her local museums. She travels each year to different venues to teach baskets and gourds. Sandy is also co-chair of the Basket

Cruise 2010 and 2012. They are in the process of planning for 2014.

CHAR CIAMMAICHELLA – Char has been weaving for almost 20 years and teaching for the last 10 years. She weaves mainly with reed and loves playing with color placement to get many different, and interesting patterns. She teaches at home, at guild gatherings, and many weaving conventions. She loves teaching and passing down weaving

techniques to all. She has recently opened her website www.charswings.com and is constantly trying new techniques and ideas! She has been the coordinator for WinterWeave Conference the last 13 years.

BONNIE GALE – Bonnie has been a professional traditional willow basketmaker and willow artist for the past 29 years. She teaches across North America and Europe. Her baskets are part of the collections at Plimoth Plantation and Mount Vernon. Her work has been included in diverse books and publications. In 1999, she was awarded an Artist’s Fellowship from NYFA. Her living willow installations have

been featured in Vogue, Vogue Living, House and Garden and Fiber Arts magazines. In 2009, her work was featured in the PBS “Cultivation Life” series and in 2010, she appeared on the Martha Stewart Show. Her website is www.bonniegale.com

LINDA FABIAN – Linda and her husband, Stan, have been producing and selling wooden basket products for 12 years. This led to an avid interest in weaving and developing patterns using the wood products that they produce. She has been weaving for 10 years and teaching for 5 years. She is always on the lookout for something new that she can apply

to her patterns. She has also developed an interest in the Nantucket style of weaving, using wood molds that they produce in their shop. ANNETTA KRAAYEVELD – Annetta began weaving in 1994, when she literally begged for a weaving lesson from a local basket weaver. Since that time she has been largely self taught, learning from both her mistakes and successes. Weaving because she can’t stop, Annetta continues to find that the challenge of mastering new techniques and weaving the pictures in the mind keep basketry an exciting art form. She considers herself a weaver, a teacher and a life-long student of basktry. In addition to publishing stacks of patterns, Annetta has been teaching at basketry events and guilds across the USA since 2000. SHARON KLUSMANN – Sharon has been weaving, designing and teaching basketry for over 25 years. Her website: www.sharonklusmann.com features seven pages of her original designs. She not only teaches basketry from her home studio in Tallmadge, OH but at national conventions and guilds throughout the country. She has had three of her designs featured in Create and Decorate Magazine and is also the author of her “Business in a Basket” to help others who love basket weaving turn their passion into a successful teaching business. PEGGY McCARSON – Peggy has been weaving since 1995 and

teaching for the last 5 years. She enjoys using color in her baskets. The best part of weaving is the fun she has talking to new and old friends, sharing techniques, tasting food, and completing a basket.

BARBARA McCORMICK – Barbara was born and raised in Mount Pleasant, SC where she learned the trade of sweetgrass basket weaving from her grandmother, mother, aunts and other family members at a very early age. She has since carried on this tradition and has shared her talent with others including her family. Barbara teaches several classes along the East coast and has her work displayed in several

publications including; “Row Upon Row: Seagrass Baskets of the Lowcountry,” a documentary, “Grass Roots: The Enduring Art of the Lowcountry Basket,” as well as the Kamisnsky House (Georgetown, SC) and McKissick Museum (Columbia, SC) just to name a few. Sweetgrass basket weaving is an art form that came from West Africa over 300 years ago during slavery. DONA NAZARENKO – When the snow “flies” or the rain pours, that’s when Dona really enjoys creating baskets, whether in reed or birch bark. Most of her wooden accents are made by her husband, Warren. They are owners of Country Spirit Baskets since 1988 and offer a variety of workshops in their studio. She is a member of several guilds, art centers and have been in newspapers, magazines and on TV. Dona has won several awards and when not at home teaching classes, she can be seen traveling across the country teaching basketry at galleries, art schools and basket conventions. BILLY OWENS – Billy is a second generation white oak basket

maker. His dad, Dale Owens, was the founder of “Owens Oak Baskets.” Billy now has a third and even a fourth generation that are able to help him weave baskets. Owens Oak Baskets has been in business for almost 30 years in southern Missouri. All the materials they use in their baskets are made from white

oak timber grown in the Ozarks which Billy selects, cuts and then shaves off with a homemade hand tool made by his Dad called the “split knife.” Billy has taught at conventions and workshops in AR, DE, FL, GA, IL, IN, KS, KY, MD, MI, MN, MO, NJ, NC, OK, OH, PA,SC, TN, TX, WV and WI. In his classes he enjoys sharing everything concerning white oak from selecting the right tree to how he prepares the weaving materials. It is his goal that first and foremost the people in his classes have an enjoyable time.

REGINA RILEY – Regina has been making pine needle baskets for 22 years and woven baskets for 15 years. She has taught in IA, WI, IL, IN, OH, and MO. JONI-DEE ROSS – When Joni-Dee wove her first basket in 1989,

she discovered the perfect expression of her exuberant optimism and joy in life. She founded Handmade North Carolina Baskets in 1991. She also co-owns The Woodland Nantucket Retreat Company. Joni-Dee earned a degree in Education from Clemson University. She has written and

published over 55 basket patterns. In addition to teaching weekly basketry classes in her studio, Joni-Dee regularly conducts classes at conventions, private guilds and art centers throughout the United States. She and her business partner will soon be publishing a book of basket patterns and weaving techniques. TAMMY FABIAN-SOUTHARD – Having recently acquired

Fabian’s Woodcrafts, Tammy is carrying on the family business providing wooden products to the basket community. She has been producing and teaching jewelry for the past 10 years. She is now applying her skills to the basket world by carrying on the family tradition of teaching. Her skills add a unique twist to this age-old tradition.

TIKA TUCKER – Color, shape and patterns offer endless

opportunity for new combinations and variations, Tika LOVES it!! She has been weaving baskets for 20 years but has only been teaching for about 12 years from Florida to Michigan and from North Carolina to Oklahoma. She loves to see creativity blossom as students allow their eyes to guide them, relying less on counting and the written pattern and

more on how to bring their own ideas to their weaving.

MARILYN WALD – Marilyn is the owner of XYZ Basket Works. She has been weaving since 1988 and began teaching in 1989 with only two students. XYZ Basket Works was formed in 1992. Marilyn has taught at conventions, guilds and workshops around the U.S. and Canada. She has been

featured in Basket Bits Magazine and Just Patterns. The students make teaching basketry special for her. It is rewarding seeing the look of a weaver as she completes her basket.

JUDY WILSON – Judy has a passion for baskets, especially intricately woven baskets. Baskets of Native American origin and other ethnic baskets hold a special place in her life. She is totally self taught and has been weaving since 1984 and teaching since 1985. She has taught all over the East Coast in at least 16 states. She especially likes to see students use skills that

she taught them many years ago. She likes teaching other and helping to spread the art of basketry.

LAURA LEE ZANGER – Laura Lee has been designing baskets and writing patterns since October 2000 and she has been teaching on the basketry convention circuit since 2002. She enjoys expressing her creativity in the Cherokee 1-3-5 twill designs and the Cherokee doubleweave technique. Her latest passion is for Chitimacha twill designs. Laura Lee has been weaving since 1986 and is a member and founder of the River Country Basket Guild in Augusta, GA. She shares her excitement and enthusiasm for weaving with everyone she encounters, maintaining the fascination of a child with every new idea, lesson and experience. Laura Lee’s most recent achievement is in writing instructional basket books and a novel, Spirit Voice, about a Cherokee basket maker. It is a fascinating story of Native American life in pre-colonial America.
