Entering its 40th year of intercollegiate competition, the Rut-gers University field hockey team looks to continue an upward trend of success under second-year head coach Meredith Long. RU returns seven starters, four of its five top scorers and 13 letterwinners from the 2012 campaign. The Scarlet Knights concluded the season with a 9-10 overall record. The nine wins for RU nine wins mark the second most victories the program had posted in fourteen years, despite a challenging schedule that featured six nationally-ranked opponents.

Included in the returners for RU are upperclassmen Lisa Pa-trone (Sewell, N.J.) and Jenn Staab (Marmora, N.J.) and soph-omore Alyssa Bull (Oakville, Ontario). All three Scarlet Knights were honored by the conference for their athletic accomplish-ments, garnering All-BIG EAST Second Team accolades. Bull was also named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year, becoming the first player in program history to receive the honor.

Rutgers welcomes seven newcomers who will join the 13 return-ers in an attempt to make the Scarlet Knights a top tier team in the newly-formed BIG EAST.

SCHEDULEThe Scarlet Knights are set to face eight teams that finished the 2012 season in the National Field Hockey Coaches Associa-tion (NFHCA) Top 25 and five teams that made the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

RU is scheduled to play 18 regular season games as well as two scrimmages, including a preseason contest at Princeton, t defending National Champion. The Scarlet Knights will play sev-en home games and nine road contests and two neutral site matches.

Following two scrimmages, Rutgers opens the season with two matchups in Burlington, Vt. vs. Boston College on Aug. 31, a team that sat at No. 21 in the final 2012 NFHCA poll, and at Vermont (Sept. 1). The Scarlet Knights take on La Salle in their home opener on Sept. 6, before taking on Duke on Sept. 8. The Blue Devils finished last season at No. 22.The next weekend features contests in Albany, N.Y. vs. Siena (Sept. 14) and at Albany (Sept. 15). The Scarlet Knights upset

the Great Danes in their season opener last season, notching a 3-2 win over the then-No. 19 team in the nation. Albany also participated in the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

RU opens its conference schedule with UConn on Sept. 22, an-other 2012 tournament participant. Rutgers is then scheduled to go on a season-long four-game road trip, which includes two squads that secured spots in last season’s NCAA Tournament in Lafayette and Drexel. The Scarlet Knights face Temple (Sept. 27) and the Leopards (Sept. 29), before taking on Villanova (Oct. 4) and the Dragons (Oct. 6) the following weekend.

The squad returns home for a matchup with Monmouth on Oct. 9, before hosting Georgetown on Oct. 12. The month concludes with road contests against Louisville on Oct. 19 and Indiana on Oct.20, before taking on conference-foe Providence on Oct. 25.

The final home game of the season is set for Nov. 1 against Big East opponent Old Dominion. Rutgers finishes the regular sea-son at Bucknell on Nov. 3.

The conference championship tournament is scheduled for Nov. 8-10.

NEWCOMERS The Scarlet Knights bring in seven freshmen to add depth to the talented returning class from the 2012 roster. A well-rounded recruiting class, Long’s squad welcomes the addition of two mid-fielders, two forwards, two backs and a goalkeeper.

“I could not be more thrilled about the class we have coming in this fall,” commented Long. “Each of the girls brings a new dimen-sion to the team, while keeping consistent with the playing style of Rutgers field hockey. The coaches are certain that this fresh-man class will make an immediate and obvious impact.”

Goalie Shevaun Hayes (Melbourne, Australia) joined the squad this past spring, while midfielder Elyse Broderick (Manahawkin, N.J.), back Devon Freshnock (Middletown, N.J.), forward Sarah Regn (Shamong, N.J.), forward Rachel Yaney (Bridgewater, N.J.) and back Sofia Walia (Surrey, British Columbia) were an-nounced in early May.

Long completed the roster with the addition of midfielder Ashpal Kaur Bhogal (Leeds, England) during the summer.

BACKSThe backfield will be anchored by seniors Laura Rose (Washing-ton Township, N.J.) and Kaitlyn Plouse (Lower Dauphin, Pa.), and sophomore Ali Stever (Ocean City, N.J.), who all saw con-siderable action during the 2012 campaign. Also returning from last year’s squad are Emily Strong (Medford, N.J.) and Carley Hawkins (Harrisburgh, Pa.).

in the RU record books for defensive saves with seven. The last player to enter the top-10 in the category was Tiffany Klebez who graduated in 2004 and currently sits in second place with 19 saves

Newcomers Walia, Bhogal and Devon Freshnock will play key roles in our backfield, while first year player Broderick will also work into the backfield rotation.

MIDFIELDAt the midfield, Long is certain that the trio of Sophie Wright (Devizes, United Kingdom), Staab and Bull will be a danger-ous combination for op-ponents throughout the season.

Bull, the reigning BIG EAST Rookie of the Year, will aim to build on an im-

pressive freshman season in which she finished second on the team in points with 17. Her five goals on the year were tied for third on the squad, while her seven assists were a team-best.

Nicole Imbriaco (Clark, N.J.) will rotate through the outside mid positions and will also see time on the forward line.

FORWARD LINE The 2013 forward line returns two of the team’s top goal scor-ers from last year in Patrone and Danielle Freshnock (Middle-town North, N.J).

Patrone tallied a team-high 19 points on eight goals and three assists and was a three-time BIG EAST Player of the Week. The New Jersey native earned one of her three honors after a stel-lar outing against conference rival Georgetown (Oct. 5), when she recorded the first hat trick of her career to lead the Scarlet Knights to a commanding 5-1 victory.

Freshnock tied for third on the team in goals with five and fin-ished third in points with 16 after dishing out six helpers.

Sophomore Katie Champion (Egg Har-bor Township, N.J.) and freshmen Yaney and Regn will also work through the for-ward rotation.

GOALKEEPERS At the goalie position, the Scarlet Knights return a veteran keeper in senior Sarah Stuby (Roxbury, N.J.). Last year, Stuby started all 19 games between the pipes and blocked a career high 109 shots. In three years she has amassed 239 stops and she currently sits at ninth all-time in the Scarlet Knights’ annals with a 2.41 goals against average.

Stuby recorded career-best 11 saves against No. 5 UConn (Sept. 15) and No. 6 Maryland (Oct. 26).

First year player Shevaun Hayes will also compete for time in net.

OUTLOOK “There is no doubt that this season’s schedule is one of the most challenging the Rutgers field program has ever faced, but I have every faith that this team can face that challenge head-on,” com-mented Long. “Games against powerhouses such as Old Domin-ion and Duke will not only be great matchups, they will also pro-vide us with the perfect preparation for our move to the Big Ten. We are very much focused on our targets for this season and I believe that we can achieve something special. Now, I’m just look-ing forward to when the first whistle blows next Saturday at the start of our season opener against Boston College.”

In her first season “On the Banks”, Long guided RU through six matchups against nationally-ranked opponents, highlighted by a thrilling 3-2 victory over No. 19 Albany in the season opener. The Scarlet Knights lost by a single goal on three occasions against ranked op-ponents.

Long would also mentor the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year, Alyssa Bull, in her inaugural season. Bull’s accolade marked the first player in program history to receive the honor. Additionally, Bull and teammates Lisa Patrone, Carlie Rouh and

MEREDITH LONGJenn Staab were named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team, while Bull and Pa-trone were named to the 2012 Long-streth/NFHCA Division I Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team and Rouh was selected for the 2012 Division I Senior Game.

Off the field, Long’s team was impres-sive in the classroom. The Rutgers field hockey team received the 2012 Gladi-ator by SGI/NFHCA Divison I National Academic Team Award as announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA), making them one of 63 teams recognized for achieving a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the first semester of the 2012-13 aca-demic year. RU was also honored with the 2012-13 Big East Team Academic Excellence Award for having the high-est collective GPA (3.531) of any league team in its sport.

In addition to the team award, 13 Scar-let Knights were named to the 2012 Gladiator by SGI / NFHCA Division I Na-

tional Academic Squad. To be named to the squad, student-athletes must

achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first se-mester. Eighteen members of last year’s squad were named

to the 2012-13 Big East All-Ac-ademic Team.

A highly decorated col-legiate athlete at the University

of Maryland, Long contin-ues to play field hockey competitively at the international stage and has been a member of the USA Indoor Na-tional Squad for three years. Most recently, she, as well as assis-

tant coach Wesley Drew and rising se-nior Lisa Patrone earned spots on

the New Jersey regional team, and were three of the 108 athletes partici-pating in the 2013 Women’s National Championship in Norfolk, Va. Long and Drew were also instrumental members of the Senior Indoor Squad that won the ArminenTurnier RohrMax Cup after three days of competitive international play in Perchtoldsdorf, Austria in Janu-ary 2013. The win marked the first-ever gold for the U.S. National Indoor team at the international level. The RU coaches also competed in Buenos Aires, Argen-tina in March in a series of matches against competitors from Argentina, Argentina U19 and Uruguay.

Long is currently the head coach for the U-16 National Indoor Team. She first as-sumed this position prior to the 2011-12 season.

Prior to being appointed head coach in January of 2012, Long served as in-terim head coach for two months and was an assistant coach with the Scarlet Knights for two seasons. The former high school All-American enjoyed suc-cess in her first season on staff for the Scarlet Knights, helping secure a trip to the 2010 BIG EAST Tournament, the program’s first appearance since 2003.

Long spent the 2009 season as an as-sistant coach at Towson University, aid-ing in all aspects of the program. She oversaw recruiting, helped in tracking academic progress of student-athletes, and helped to coordinate team travel, among other duties.

Before her stay with the Tigers, Long was an assistant for three seasons at the University of Vermont. She contrib-uted on every facet of the team, from recruiting and scouting to the develop-ment of players. In addition, Long also taught several classes at UVM.

Long commenced her collegiate play-ing career at Boston University, earn-ing a spot on the 2001 America East All-Rookie team. She transferred to the University of Maryland, helping the Terrapins advance to the NCAA Final Four for three-straight seasons, includ-ing the 2005 ACC title and the 2005 NCAA National Championship.

Long was a member of the NFHCA/Styx Academic All-American team in 2003 and earned a spot on the ACC Honor Roll during the 2003-04 and 2004-05 campaigns. Long graduated from Maryland in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy.

While at Ocean City High School, Long played on three state championship teams (1998-2000), and was a mem-ber of the United States Field Hockey Association High Performance Mid-At-lantic team.

Long is a member of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) and the United States Field Hockey As-sociation (USFHA). In addition, she has been the head coach for the USFHA Fu-tures Elite Program and the Mid-Atlan-tic Futures Elite Academy Site.

Wesley Drew enters her second sea-son as an assistant coach at Rutgers in 2013, bringing experience as both an assistant coach and a standout from the College of William & Mary in Wil-liamsburg, Va.

The RU coaches also competed in Buenos Aires, Argentina in March in a series of matches against competitors from Argentina, Argentina U19 and Uruguay.

Prior to her arrival to the Scarlet Knights program, Drew had a two-year stint as an assistant coach at her alma mater, assisting in all aspects of the Tribe’s program. The Virginia Beach, Va., native was responsible for an array of du-ties, including developing practice plans, assisting in-game player development, and facilitating mass communication with prospective student athletes as the head recruiting coor-dinator.

Drew brings a wealth of leadership experience to Rutgers, having coached athletes at several camps and serving as a head coach and director of the William & Mary Day Camp in 2011. She also spent time with Colonial Field Hockey in Williams-burg where she was responsible for the mass communication and advertising of upcoming clinics and events, while also assisting in the organization of staffing and curriculum development.

Before her coaching days, Drew was a dominant four-year member of the Tribe’s field hockey team from 2006-2009. As a two-time team captain and two-time MVP, she tied for third in school history in career

assists with 19 and was a National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA)/Longstretch All-South Region Second Team selection in 2009. Among her other achievements, she was a NCAA Division I Senior All- Star Game selection in 2009 and a two-time VA-SID All-State selection in 2008 and 2009.

ROLAND PEEKELPrior to arriving “On the Banks,” Peekel began his coaching stint in the United States in 2009 with Total Dutch Field Hockey, in Somerset, N.J. Peekel cov-ered an array of tasks, including indi-vidual training sessions, formulating skills classes curriculum, managing the club website and serving as the Club Manager.

Before coming to the states Peekel spent two years with Hockey Club Vliss-ingen as the field hockey coordinator. In addition to coaching athletes ages 10-26, the Dordrecht, Netherlands

native was responsible for the Youth Development Plan, as well as hosting and chairing the monthly meetings for trainers. Peekel spent two years play-ing for the club on the men’s team as a center midfielder.

In 2008 Peekel became the president of Roland Peekel Hockey Training. The company provided professional Field Hockey Clinics for children aged 10-18, all of which was coordinated and implemented by Peekel himself.

In 1997 Peekel began his coaching career as a volunteer with Hockey Club Zevenbergen, where he spent 10 seasons assisting with a variety of age groups. Peekel spent 14 seasons play-ing with the Zevenbergen as a forward and a midfielder.

Peekel received certificates in KNHB trainer/coach A, as well as a youth trainer coach course.

SEASON NOTES- The Scarlet Knights finished with a 9-10 overall record under first-year head coach Meredith Long, and fell just short of heading to the BIG EAST Champi-onships- RU’s nine wins mark the second most wins the program had posted in four-teen years - RU faced six nationally ranked opponents and took down then-No. 19 Albany, 3-2 (8/24)- The Scarlet Knights lost by a single goal on two occasions against No. 14 Boston University (1-2 OT) and No. 6 Maryland (1-3), while also hanging tough against No. 25 Maine in a 2-1 defeat - Thirteen players named to CFHCA/NFHCA National Academic Squads—most players in history of program since the squads were first named in 1987 - Last year 10 players were named to squad- before that the team had never had more than seven (2010) and had six players named on two occasions (2009 and 2006)- Alyssa Bull became the first player in program history to be named BIG EAST Rookie of the Year- RU had four players named to All-BIG EAST Second Team—most since the team joined the league in 1994 (Bull, Lisa Patrone, Jenn Staab & Carlie Rouh) - Rutgers was awarded a BIG EAST Player of the Week accolade on six sepa-rate occasions—the most weekly honors earned in a season by the program in 15 years - Patrone was a three-time BIG EAST Player of the week- Goalkeeper Sarah Stuby started all 19 games between the pipes and blocked a career high 109 shots on the year. In three years she has amassed 248 stops and she currently sits at ninth all-time in the Scarlet Knights’ annals with a 2.41 goals against average- Laura Rose has moved into a tie for tenth in RU record books for defensive saves with seven (last player to enter the top ten in this list was Tiffany Klebez who graduated in 2004 and currently sits in second place with 19 saves)

HEIDI FAITH - INDUCTION CLASS OF 2002A native of Princeton, N.J., Faith was inducted into the Rutgers Olympic Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. Faith holds two RU single-game records -- goals (six) and points (12). She achieved both milestones as a senior in 1976. In 1973, she was named to the New Atlan-tic All-Conference First Team and repeated the feat in 1975. After her career at Rutgers, Faith went on to earn a bronze medal at the U.S. Olympic Sports Festival in 1981 as a member of the U.S. National Team.

HEATHER JONES - INDUCTION CLASS OF 2000One of the most decorated field hockey players in Rutgers history, Jones was inducted into the Olympic Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. Jones capped her career off in 1993 by setting the school single-season records for goals (28) and points (59). Her 59 points were also an Atlantic-10 record. For her efforts, she was named to the 1993 CFHCA All-America Team and was a two-time Regional All-America selection (1991 and 1993). The Atlan-tic-10 Freshman of the Year in 1990, Jones was voted RU’s Best Offensive Player in 1993 and the team’s Most Valuable Player in 1991 and 1993. During her senior season, Jones led RU to a 14-8 record and the school’s first-ever Atlantic 10 Tournament victory (5-0 over Rhode Island). To cap her playing career, Jones was selected to play in the North/South All-Star Game in 1993.

ELIZABETH FERRARA - INDUCTION CLASS OF 1998A Collingswood, N.J., native, Ferrara entered the Rutgers Olympic Sports Hall of Fame in 1998. Her stellar career concluded in 1984 when she was the Rutgers Player of the Year and led the Scarlet Knights to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight and a 15-4-4 record. As a standout goalkeeper, Ferrara set the school record with 13 shutouts and an .886 save percentage, which ranked ninth nationally all time. For her efforts as a senior, Ferrara was a CFHCA Regional All-American and Mitchell & Ness Mid-East selection. In 1980, Ferrara was a member of the United States 21 & Under National Team.

RENEE CLARKE - INDUCTION CLASS OF 1994 Renee Clarke became a member of the Rutgers Olympic Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 after establishing herself as one of the greatest goalkeepers in school history. The Hatboro, PA, native played from 1984-88 and helped Rutgers advance to the NCAA Tour-nament Elite Eight in 1986. For her efforts, she was named Rutgers’ Best Defensive Player and the squad’s Player of the Year. During the 1987 season, she set a school record by stopping 29 shots in a game and 289 for the season. Clarke graduated as the school’s all-time leader in saves (634) and ranked nationally in career save percentage (12th, .882), career saves (29th, 634) and single-season saves (13th, 289). Prior to her graduation in 1988, Clarke received the Headley-Singer Award as RU’s top graduating female athlete.

ELIZABETH MCGUIRE - INDUCTION CLASS OF 1994A two-time team Most Valuable Player, McGuire has the rare distinction of being a member of the Rutgers Olympic Sports Hall of Fame and having her jersey number (No. 4) retired. McGuire was a Scarlet Knight from 1980-84 and her career was highlighted by earning team MVP honors in 1982 and 1984. In 1984, she was a key member of RU’s NCAA Tournament Elite Eight team that finished 15-4-4. That fall, she also was a CFHCA regional All-American and honorable mention All-American. McGuire also received the Headley-Singer Award as RU’s top gradutaing female athlete in 1985 for her stellar senior season. A member of the U.S. National Team in 1984, McGuire participated in the 1982 National Sports Festival and the 1984 Pikes Peak Festival.

ROBERT L. BARCHI is the 20th president of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

Since beginning his tenure on September 1, 2012, President Barchi has been overseeing preparations for integrating into Rutgers most units of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, as outlined in the recently adopted New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act. He has begun work on a university strategic plan (the first in more than 15 years) and was part of a statewide coalition of university, business, and labor leaders urging voter support of a $750 million bond act for higher education construction, which was approved by a wide margin in November. Presi-dent Barchi announced on November 20, 2012 that all intercollegiate athletic teams on Rutgers’ New Brunswick campus will join the Big Ten Conference at a date to be determined.

From 2004 to 2012, Dr. Barchi served as president of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, nationally regarded as a top uni-versity dedicated to health sciences education and research. Prior to Jefferson, he was pro-vost and chief academic officer of the Univer-sity of Pennsylvania, an Ivy League institution founded in 1740. There, he had responsibility for Penn’s 12 schools, all academic programs, athletics, students, and faculty.

Dr. Barchi was born in Philadelphia but spent his formative years not far from Rutgers in Westfield, N.J. He received his B.S. and M.S. de-grees from Georgetown University, and Ph.D. and M.D. degrees from the University of Penn-sylvania. He completed specialty training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and holds board certification in neurology. Through-out his career, Dr. Barchi has been active as a teacher and as an NIH-funded researcher in the fields of neuroscience and neurology, and he has published extensively in his field. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the Na-tional Academy of Sciences in recognition of his pioneering research on the structure and function of voltage-gated ion channels in nerve and muscle, and on the role these critical mol-ecules can play in human disease. He was also elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians and named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Neurological Association, and the American Academy of Neurology.

In 1972, Dr. Barchi began his academic ca-reer as a faculty member at Penn. Within a decade, he rose to become the David Mahoney Professor of Neurological Sciences. Between 1983 and 1996, he served as director of the Mahoney Institute of Neurological Sciences—an interdisciplinary, universitywide entity that he expanded to become the focus for Penn’s

growth in neuroscience, encompassing the intellectual activities of more than 120 faculty members. Dr. Barchi founded the Department of Neuroscience at Penn and served as its first chair; he also served as chair of the Depart-ment of Neurology. He was named the Fairhill Professor in 2002, a position that he still holds in emeritus status.

The University of Pennsylvania named Dr. Bar-chi as its provost and chief academic officer in 1999, and he served in this capacity until 2004. As provost, Dr. Barchi had responsi-bility for the university’s 12 schools and their academic programs and budgets and Penn’s intercollegiate athletics program, as well as for Penn’s students and faculty. During his tenure, he worked with president Judith Rodin to reas-sert the primacy of the academic mission in the direction of the university. He recruited new leadership to nine of the 12 schools at Penn and established a number of universitywide interdisciplinary educational and research in-stitutes. He also led the university through a comprehensive strategic planning process.

As president of Thomas Jefferson University, Dr. Barchi oversaw a period of tremendous growth. The university established three new schools—including the Jefferson School of Pharmacy, which graduated its first class in May 2012, and the Jefferson School of Popu-lation Health, the only school in the nation to of-fer a master’s degree in chronic care manage-ment. Overall student enrollment increased by 51 percent and annual degrees awarded rose by 54 percent. Dr. Barchi also expanded the reach of the campus, inaugurating the Part-nership in Healthcare Education, an academic affiliation with the University of Delaware that offers dual-degree programs between the two institutions.

Other accomplishments at Jefferson include successful implementation of an ambitious strategic plan that integrated the university’s clinical, education, and research missions; a comprehensive facilities master plan that sup-ports those missions; and a major fundraising campaign that provides the resources neces-sary for success. During Dr. Barchi’s tenure, Jefferson established 22 new endowed pro-fessorships and 50 endowed scholarships, helping to ensure a healthy and diverse com-munity of faculty and students. The university surpassed $300 million in fundraising under

his leadership, twice the amount raised during the preceding eight-year period.

During his presidency, Dr. Barchi also oversaw the transformation of Jefferson’s urban envi-ronment into a vibrant university campus. A coordinated construction program, coupled with improved landscape design and signage, helped provide visitors and the Jefferson com-munity a sense of place and connectedness to the compact urban campus in the heart of the city’s historic district.

Dr. Barchi is married to Francis Harper Bar-chi, a tenure-track faculty member of the Rut-gers School of Social Work. Before coming to Rutgers, she was a senior fellow in the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylva-nia, where she was engaged in education and research activities relating to international research ethics. Francis Barchi holds a Ph.D. in social welfare, a master’s in bioethics, and a master’s in nonprofit leadership from the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a bach-elor’s degree from Smith College. She is the former executive vice president of the Dana Foundation in New York, a post she assumed following a 20-year span as president of her own company, which provided protocol and strategic communication services for inter-national clients. Francis Barchi’s research fo-cuses on the social and behavioral factors that influence women’s health in southern Africa. In 2009, she completed the first major quantita-tive study on women’s autonomy and gender-based violence in Botswana, and she is the principal investigator on a study in that country examining the extent to which women’s un-derstanding of HPV and cervical cancer influ-ences their decision-making about prevention and treatment. She is currently part of a team responsible for ethics training of health profes-sionals in Botswana, Tanzania, and Guatemala.

As an avocation, President Barchi is an expert in the history and mechanical development of clocks and watches. In addition to collecting and conserving examples of these timepieces from the 17th and 18th centuries, he designs and constructs his own precision clocks in his basement machine shop.

The Barchis, who have four adult children and one young dog, spend their leisure time at their home in coastal Maine where they are avid boaters and hikers.

Hermann spent 15 years at Lou-isville as the Cardinals built one of the nation’s most competitive ath-letic programs across the board. Following a national search, Her-mann was selected from a pool of 63 candidates. She is the first woman to serve in this capacity at Rutgers and will become the sec-ond female athletic director in Big Ten history. “It’s a pleasure to welcome Julie Hermann to the Rutgers com-munity,” said President Robert L. Barchi. “She is one of the most re-spected athletics administrators in the country and she was deeply involved in moving Louisville from Conference USA to the BIG EAST and from the BIG EAST to the At-lantic Coast Conference. Her 15 years of leadership experience will be an invaluable asset to the uni-versity as we prepare to enter the Big Ten.” One of the primary goals set by Hermann is to create a best-in-class student-athlete care system. She is committed to developing

programs to support both athletic and academic pursuits after build-ing one of the nation’s premier sys-tems for student-athletes at Louis-ville (L-Care). Hermann served in a supervisory capacity of U of L athletics as the university garnered the 2013 NCAA men’s basketball national championship; two BCS Bowl wins; two NCAA women’s basketball na-tional championship appearances (2013 and 2009) and one NCAA men’s soccer College Cup national championship appearance (2010). Since joining the BIG EAST in 2005, the Cardinals claimed 64 confer-ence titles. Hermann oversaw 20 sports at Louisville, marketing, academics, sports performance, sports medi-cine, student development and ath-letic development. She worked to cultivate support for many of the U of L athletic venues that allowed the Cardinals to enjoy one of the nation’s biggest and best building booms in college sports. Before joining U of L, Hermann served as an assistant coach for USA Volleyball, helping the national team to a silver medal finish at the World University Games in 1997. Prior to that she served as head women’s volleyball coach at the University of Tennessee for six sea-sons. Under her watch, the Lady

Vols advanced to the NCAA Tour-nament for the first time in a de-cade. Hermann is immediate past presi-dent of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators. She is the former chair of the NCAA Division I Wom-en’s Volleyball Committee. Hermann has served on numerous boards, including the Frazier Rehab Institute, the Louisville Sports Com-mission and the Kentucky Sports Commission. Hermann and her partner Dr. Les-lie Danehy are the proud parents of a seven year-old son, Aidan.
