Now for some Intel on our 10 course musical feast on the OLG Kew Gardens MainStage. It featuresJP Saxe, a new talent who at age nineteen has a remarkably mature

and well rounded sound. Hes a singer songwriter of great skill with a voice comparableto Daryl Hall. Our 2013 diva, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and performer is SelenaEvangeline. She calls her sound alternative R&B, combining the voice of Gladys Knight

Beyonce, Mavis Staples plus a hint of what lies in the subtext beneath. Shuffle Demons

thirty years of funky off-beat jazz, over the top stage antics and virtuosic playing. Fromthe street corners of Berlin to main stages around the planet, the Demons bring great

humour and colorful attire to their idiom. Roberto Linares Brown Orchestra, giving usCuban music at its purist, featuring original compositions, blasting rhythm, punctuatinghorns and brassy vocals. Eric Lindelland The Sunliners Sunday Morningare serving

up blue-eyed blues with a dollop of New Orleans funk. Vocal seductress Irene Torresand The Sugar Devils, exploded unto the music scene in 2011. Theyre the best youngparty band in Toronto, but dont let their youth fool you. The Devils are experienced

musicians who can bring it with the best of them! Also on the menu is Robert Michaels

whos bringing his beautiful Flamenco, Cuban and other instrumental compositions tothe stage. The Iroko Projectwill feature Cuban music pared down to jazz, dance and

improvisation with special guest Hilaro Duran and Jane Bunnett. Bill Kings RhythmExpress, the Festivals house band of sorts, will celebrate the Festivals 25 years with ablend of jazz funk, ska, reggae and jazz with special guests Dubmatix, Selena Evangelinand Gavin Hope. American electric and soul blues singer and harp player, Sugar RayNorciaand his band The Bluetones, whove been entertaining audiences for 33 years, are one of our favourite blues bands and as such, will be returning to the Festival for thsecond time to mark our 25th! This year weve re-located our Youth Stageto the west

of Kew Gardens where it will feature the talents of the National Youth Jazz ComboandtheJazz Workshop Ensembles.

Dont forget to stroll down to the Beach Boardwalklocated by the lake south of theKew Gardens Stage and check out our Latin Squareand Big Band Stageareas. Thesounds are electrifying and the setting is sublime . You may forget you want to leave!

Our signature dish Streetfest spreading out for 2.5 kilometers along Queen StreetEast, will once again feature 45 bandsperforming three sets each. Its a euphony ofsounds, smiling crowds, prancing feet and bewildered dogs. Love it or hate it theres

nothing quite like it out there.

What do Festivals and Trucks have in common? Food Trucks! Ours have a gourmettwist with our Taste Of Jazz / Gourmet Food Truck Extravaganza. This two day event,

taking place on July 23 - 24 at Woodbine Park from 5pm - 10pm, will excite foodies andmusic lovers alike. In addition to the great music and food theres also a licensed beergarden where folks can put their feet up and stay awhile and then on July 28th, run off

one of our outdoor licensed garden patio areas!

Finally, a big all - embracing thanks toour corporate, media and govern-

ment sponsors, listed in this programand on our website, to our municipaland local area business and service

partners, and to our volunteers andstaff for believing in the Festival.Without you we would have never

    reached 25.

    TWENTY-FIVE AND THE VIBE IS

    DECIDEDLY JAZZELICIOUS!

    The Beaches International Jazz

    Festival gratefully

    acknowledges the support

    of our government partners.

Art Blakey, American jazz drummer and bandleader once said

that Jazz washes away the dust of everyday life. We couldntagree more. And so, every July since 1989, weve set sail on ourodyssey of musical discovery, bringing back abundant catches

full of extraordinary jazz artists from near and distant shores. Our 25th anniversary year is no exception! Whats differentnow is that weve become less obsessed about trying to tackle

the precise meaning of jazz choosing instead to agree withAmerican jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk whenhe said : I dont have a definition of jazzYoure just supposed

to know it when you hear it.

Well that interpretation of the limitless potential and qualitiesf jazz is working for us! Its one thats encouraged us to hire scores of young musiciansver the years, and see many of them reach and stay at the top of their game. And, itseen working for our ever growing audience - who comes to feast, year after year, on

estival ambience and its cornucopia of musical offerings.

o whats cookin this year? Lets start with a sample of our headliner stage offerings one TD Main StageatWoodbine Park: On Friday night we sprinkle on the hot sauce with

azz Meets Salsawith internationally celebrated Colombian composer and musician Wilsoncevedo, who draws upon a wide circle of musicians to help him realize his unique visionf jazz-salsa fusion. On Saturday night we offer a more languid heat with Paul James,

llowed by Bryan Leeand The Blues Power Band. Paul James, our national cultural iconho has shared the stage with a virtual whos who of Blues (Bo Diddley), Rock (Spenceravis) and Folk (Bob Dylan) stars. Bryan Lee, about whom another great American blues

usician Duke Robillard said: Whether hes wailing a Freddy King inspired blues ballad, omping out low down and dirty blues, or getting down with a superfunky New Orleansoove, Bryan Lee is gonna grab your soul and squeeze it till you scream in blues ecstasy.

so known as your Braille Blues Daddy, Bryan has released a prodigious 14 CDs in theidst of touring the world with his The Blues Power Band. Sunday, we dig deep into your

oul withJesse Dee, new generation R&B - soul singer-songwriter - guitarist extraordinaire

om Boston whos played the opening act for Al Green and Etta James while alsoaintaining a steady international touring schedule. We conclude Woodbine, full circle, ith Cuban musicianAdonis Puentes, one of a pair of fraternal twin brothers (the other

eing Alex Cuba) who immigrated to Canada from Cuba in 1998. Adonis has long sinceone solo and (in the words of fellow artist Ruben Blades) grown into a great singer andn elegant composer and lyricist grounded and nourished by his Cuban roots and worldly

xperience, in his own right. Our other Woodbine stages, the Youth and neweneration Stages have merged and moved closer to Kew Gardens this year. Weve

eplaced them with our Trinidad and Tobago Village Stage- featuring island

In 2012, at the third annual Jazz in Motion Juried Photography Exhibition, participants displayed images

best defined the essence of jazz music, jazz musicians and the audience which supports them. Thank yo

to all of our talented participants that entered last years competition. It was outstanding! We are excite

announce that we are anticipating that 2013 will be our best show yet.

We believe that photography and live music have an enduring symbiotic relationship that we want to

celebrate. We will be continuing with the current theme of images that best define the essence of jazz m

jazz musicians and the audience which supports them. These images can originate from Jazz jam sessio

festivals or concerts which have taken place locally or elsewhere across the globe. We know that theres

explosion of jazz and jazz festival photography out there waiting to be shared and enjoyed by all.
