By Jessica JonesEditor

“It’s one of the best festivals in the US.”Ed Rodriguez, president of the Alabama Gulf Coast

Area Chamber of Commerce might be a bit partial when it comes to the 42nd Annual National Shrimp Festival in Gulf Shores, but some would argue, he’s got good reason.

“There’s something for everybody,” he began. “If you want to go to a food festival, it’s a food festival; if you want go to an art festival, it’s an art festival; if you want to go to a music festival, you’ve got it. It’s all those things.”

The festival is held the second full weekend in October, Oct. 10-13 this year, Thursday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

It is free to the public and is held in Gulf Shores at the intersection of highways 59 and 182. Parking is first-come, first-served and the shuttle service is recommend-ed. An interdenominational church service will be held on the West Stage on Sunday from 9-10 a.m.

The festival typically attracts 250,000 visitors and fea-tures 250 vendors. A seafood sampling tent offers free

tastes, plus cooking demonstrations, in addition to the festival’s many food vendors. Arts and crafts vendors of-fer original pieces for one-of-a-kind souvenirs and keep-sakes, while the Retail Marketplace holds a plethora of goodies for guests to enjoy.

Official merchandise, including the official 42nd An-nual National Shrimp Festival poster by Loran Chavez, can be found at any of the “shrimp-colored” tents

throughout the festival.Another aspect of the event is the manpower that goes

on behind the scenes, Rodriguez offered.“One amazing thing about this festival is there’s proba-

bly 400 to 500 volunteers that go into this festival and 80 to 100 on the committee,” he explained. “Without them, we couldn’t do it with only six of us (staffers) full time.”

Students and schools will win as se-lected singers earn cash prizes and scholarships.

“There’s a huge focus on having something for all ages,” Rodriguez revealed.

sand sculpture ContestThe Sand Sculpture Contest at the

Annual National Shrimp Festival will be held on Saturday on the beach at the southwest corner of the Festival grounds at the public beach access. Registration begins on the beach at 11 a.m. and build-ing occurs from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. when the Sand Sculptures are judged by a care-fully selected panel of judges.

A building team is allowed a maximum of four members. All participants will re-ceive a plastic sand bucket and shovel. The four team categories are: 5-10 years age group; 11-15 years age group; 16 years and up; and Family (All ages). If adults wish to help their child/children, enter the Family category. Prizes will be given for first, second and third places and hon-orable mention in each category.

outdoor World“We added some activities for people who are outdoor

enthusiasts — exhibits on hunting and fishing and things you can do outdoors on the Gulf Coast,” Rodriguez said. “It’s brand new this year.” Peruse vendors specializing in outdoor activities and sample the best of what the Gulf has to offer.

11October 2013 Shrimp Festival

The 42nd Annual National Shrimp Festival is closer than you think, and organizers believe this year’s en-tertainment lineup is sure to please music lovers of all types. Produced by the Alabama Gulf Coast Area

Chamber of Commerce, this year’s Festival will take place Oct. 10 – 13 where Ala. Highway. 59 meets the Gulf.

While the Festival is named for the tasty Gulf shrimp that are featured in numerous food vending booths, many come for the top-flight entertainers that grace two stages from morn-ing to night for four straight days.

This year, veteran rockers Everclear will headline Satur-day’s entertainment, and Nashville-based up-and-comers BlackJack Billy will headline Friday’s lineup. The traditional Thursday headliners, local favorites the Sand Band and the Tip Tops will once again take the stage to rock the first night of

the Festival. Tradition will also round out the Festival on Sunday with the Andy Smith Band closing out the Festival entertainment schedule for at least the 13th year in a row.

Whether it’s Everclear’s post-grunge and alternative rock ‘n roll, BlackJack Billy’s country influenced stylings, Motown showband sounds from Tip Tops, ‘70s and ‘80s party music of Dr. Zarr’s Amazing Funk Monster, or blues and jazz tinged melodies of Willie Sugarcapps and Grammy winner Tony Goulas, this year’s entertainment lineup has something for everyone.

“This year’s lineup is diverse, as usual. We’ll have music at both the Wind Creek Casino East Stage and the Organized Seafood Association West stage, not to mention the Runa Pac-ka Wind Rhythms Native American band,” Chamber Special Events Director Ann vonEberstein said. “Everyone should be able to find a style of music to their liking.”

Festival Entertainment Chair Tammy Halco said her com-mittee searched long and hard to find the bands that will ap-peal to Festival crowds.

“This year we made a conscious decision to find the best bands in the region,” she said. “We have bands that hail from as far away as Portland and Denver, but we’re recognized as one of the top festivals in the Southeast, and we decided our music lineup should reflect the best music from our local and regional music scene as well as artists from across the country

that are well on their way to stardom.”There are many excellent bands that are scheduled to play

in support of the headliners, according to Halco. “Spyn Reset played an afternoon gig for us last year fea-

turing their progressive electronic instrumental music, and I must have had 75 people come up to me and tell me how great they were. They sold out of every piece of merchandise they brought with them. We have them back this year for a lat-er performance,” she said. “Varlet is a psychedelic rock band

with experimental folk, indie and jazz influences.”The blues will figure prominently in this year’s

lineup. Betsy Badwater, Ryan Balthrop, Greg Fells and Adam Holt, along with the previously-men-tioned Willie Sugarcapps and Tony Goulas all play blues-influenced music.

“We’re not far from the Mississippi Delta, where blues was born,” Halco said. “These musicians are

part of our push to feature our regional talent.”Festival Chairman Matt Mogan said some policies intro-

duced at last year’s Festival pertaining to audiences for the entertainment will be implemented once again this year.

“We’re staying with our ‘No Chair’ policy for the areas di-rectly in front of the stages,” he said. “In the past, some of our audience members would show up as soon as the Festival opens and they would place their camp chairs right in front of the stage. They would leave the chairs, and show back up just before the headliners took the stage. Sometimes their chairs would be moved and tempers would flare.”

Mogan said barricades will be placed 20 or 30 feet in front of the stages and security guards will be there to make sure the area right in front of the performers is reserved for people to stand and dance.

Along with top regional artists, many local artists includ-ing Brent Burns and Lisa Christian will perform as well.

“We’re dedicated to bringing our fans the best music our area has to offer,” Halco said.

For a complete lineup of Festival entertainment see the website at myshrimpfest.com and click on the Music link or see page 10-11.

13October 2013 Shrimp Festival

When former Annual National Shrimp Festival Chairman Ron Kutter de-cided 2012 was to be his sixth — and last — year to lead the event, he knew he had a big decision on his hands. As the outgo-ing chairman, Kutter had to recommend someone to the staff at the Alabama Gulf Coast Area Chamber of Commerce to replace him.

While it was a big deci-sion, Kutter said it was one of the easiest he’s ever had to make.

“When it came down to it, I could only think of one person that I was certain could do the job as well as

me,” he said. “That person was Matt Mogan. He had years of experience as a Festival committee mem-ber, so he knew as much about the workings of the Festival as anyone. Best of all, he’s the type of guy that everyone who works with him goes above and beyond the call of duty. He gets the best out of every-body because they like and respect him so much.”

Mogan, a real estate agent for Re/Max of Gulf Shores, had actually taken some time off from the Fes-tival committee when he received the call from Kut-ter.

“I had been in charge of

the food vendors for sever-al years. After the 2006 Fes-tival, I decided that even though I loved the work involved with the Fest, I thought it was time to give someone else a chance. I had a wife, two growing children and a business that was growing as well that needed my attention more than the Festival.”

When Kutter ap-proached Mogan prior to the 2012 Festival about becoming his successor, Mogan said he wasn’t ab-solutely sure he wanted to accept the role, which is strictly a volunteer posi-tion.

“It was certainly an

honor to even be considered for the Chairman position,” he said. “However, I told Ron I would have to talk it over with my family, and it would have to be a joint de-cision. I knew how much time I spent on the Festi-val when I was in charge of food, and in the chairman position, I knew the hours would only increase.”

After careful consider-ation, Mogan consented to take over as chairman for 2013, and spent last year’s Festival as an apprentice of sorts to Kutter.

“As much as I knew about the Festival from my years volunteering, after

shadowing Ron last year I realized that there was at least that much I didn’t know,” he said. “I believe, and pray, that I have an adequate handle on things this year. We have excel-lent volunteers in place and things so far are run-ning smoothly.”

Mogan said the key to a great Festival is undoubt-edly the hundreds of vol-unteers that donate their time and expertise to make the Festival an enjoyable event for everyone who at-tends.

“We have approximate-ly 100 volunteer commit-tee members who spend at least four days at the Festival site from before it opens to after closing,” he said. “These staff volun-teers along with 600 to 700 more volunteers — who work in every area from the Children’s Activity Village to our retail and conces-sions booths — are the real

reason the Festival runs as smoothly as it does.”

Mogan said most volunteers spend just four hours of their weekend working

in the Chamber’s booths. “The rest of the weekend

they’re like everyone else, enjoying the food, music and art of the Festival,” he said. “The only difference is they have a cool volun-teer T-shirt they can show off.”

Volunteers staff infor-mation booths, sell official Festival souvenirs in the Chamber’s retail booths, sell ice-cold concessions and everything in-between. These volunteers can be spotted by the unique T-shirts they receive for vol-unteering at the Festival.

“These are special T-shirts,” Mogan said. “Any-one can buy an official Shrimp Festival T-shirt, but these shirts are only given to volunteers.”

“The volunteers are the engine that makes this a true community event,” Chamber Special Events Director Ann vonEberstein said. “They take pride and ownership of the Festival.”

She said that along with the custom T-shirts, the Chamber shows its appre-ciation to its volunteers through an invitation to the Festival’s Kick-Off Party, which was held at Nolan’s Restaurant in Gulf Shores on Sept. 27.

Mogan said while a great number of Festival vol-unteers come from mem-ber businesses, volunteers from outside the Chamber are welcome as well.

VonEberstein said there is no typical Festival vol-unteer.

“Some are area resi-dents. Some are condo owners that come down for the weekend and vol-unteer. Some are retired,” she said. “Still others are from out of town, and stay in a condo or motel for the weekend. Our volunteers come from all walks and all stages of life. ”

This year’s Festival is scheduled to take place Oct. 10-13 at the main pub-lic beach in Gulf Shores.

“We love our volun-teers. Anyone who wants to help us can sign up by going to the Festival web-site at myshrimpfest.com, and click on the Volunteer link,” vonEberstein said. “It’s a few hours of hard work, but it’s the most fun you’ll have working hard. I guarantee it.”

“{Volunteers} are the real

reason the Festival runs as

smoothly as it does.”

— Matt Mogan, Festival chairman

14 Shrimp Festival October 2013

By Judy smithContributing writer

How would you like to see the next Carrie Under-wood, Kelly Clarkson, or Jordan Sparks perform-ing? Wonder if the next Phillip Phillips or Scotty McCreery might be living along the Alabama Gulf

Coast? It would be pretty cool if you could say “I knew them when ...” while you’re watching the latest rising star perform on some of America’s top musical compe-tition shows or music award shows. Well, here’s your chance to see some of the amazing talent that the area has to offer. These young, talented performers might be the next rising star to enchant the nation.

At the 42nd Annual National Shrimp Festival, local youth will get a chance to show off those golden pipes or those mean guitar licks and get the opportunity to win scholarship money. In its inaugural year, the 2013 Shrimp Festival Idol is a chance for Baldwin County high school students from grades nine through 12 to compete for scholarships and cash prizes.

“This will be a great showcase of our high school talent pool,” Charley Ogletree, Shrimp Fest Idol committee head, said.

In this “American Idol” styled showcase on Saturday morning, Oct. 12, talented singers will perform two songs to show off their tal-ents. The panel of judges will be composed of a judge from each high school in Baldwin County. They will help rate the talent and name the winners of the com-petition.

Prizes for the contest include: third-place winner will receive a $250 scholarship, and the represented win-ning school will receive a $250 scholarship prize. For second place, the performer will receive a $500 scholar-ship, and the represented winning school will receive a $500 scholarship prize. Besides the impressive honor of winning the festival’s first ever Shrimp Festival Idol competition, the first place Idol winner will receive a $1,000 cash prize, and the represented winning school will receive a $1,000 scholarship prize.

The competition was the brainchild of Matt Mogan to help build interest in the event for local families and to also give local talents an opportunity to shine, and this is the perfect opportunity to get a look and listen to some of our very brilliant young performers. Shawna P., who has some experience in musical competition as she competed for Team Shakira on last season’s “The Voice,” will serve as host of the competition and will perform a few songs of her own.

It’s pretty easy to see that the Alabama area is blessed with lots of gifted musical talents. Maybe it’s something in the water, but Ogletree has been impressed with the support that the competition has received.

“There has been really a great interest in the competi-tion,” Ogletree said. “The schools are very excited with the opportunity for the kids and the schools as well as the high level of the competition.”

Ogletree has also been very pleased with the level of talent in the local performers and thinks that the next big

star just might be discovered at the competition. And you can trust his opinion. Ogletree knows

what he is talking about. An exceptional musician him-self, Ogletree has been playing the Fest for at least 20 years consecutively. This year, he will be playing with the Sand Band on the East Stage on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 6 p.m., but his experience with the fest goes back quite some time. He’s got a legacy with the always fun Annual National Shrimp Festival.

“My first band, the Alabama Dirt Band, performed at the 2nd Shrimp Fest, and a couple more after that,” Ogletree said. “So I’ve been playing a long time.”

Don’t let the opportunity to see some rising stars pass you by. Come out and enjoy all the talent the Alabama Gulf Coast has to offer and show these local students your support. It will be a great competition that is sure to bring plenty of excitement to the Shrimp Fest. So, pack up the family and make it a great day of soaking up the sun, enjoying some scrumptious shrimp, and listening to lots of great entertainment. This is one event that you do not want to miss.

The first ever Shrimp Festival Idol will be held Satur-day, Oct 12, at 10 a.m. For more information, check out the Annual National Shrimp Festival website.

Who will be named the first evershrimp Festival Idol?

“This {competition} will be

a great showcase of our high

school talent pool.”

— Charley ogletree, Shrimp Fest Idol committee head

17October 2013 Shrimp Festival

The 42nd Annual National Shrimp Festival’s committee members have al-ready been busy. At a committee meet-ing on March 19, they chose an entry by Fairhope artist Loran Chavez as this year’s official poster.

“The design features multiple shrimp along with several other under-sea wonders including sand dollars and two gorgeous mermaids,” Alabama Gulf Coast Area Chamber of Commerce Spe-cial Events Director Ann VonEberstein said. “One shrimp is playing a guitar, another is painting a picture and two more are hard at work cooking. These shrimp represent different, but equally important, aspects of our festival — mu-sic, food and art.”

Chavez said she grew up in an Air Force family, and her experiences have shaped her art. “I grew up with a differ-ent point of view of the world around me. I traveled extensively with my parents because my father was in the Air Force,” she said. “This travel gave me the chance to see and do things that most children only dream about. That zest for life has followed me into my adult years. My love of the world

around me has also been a major influ-ence on my artwork.”

Shrimp Festival Chairman Matt Mogan said he was impressed not only with the beauty of the poster, but that Chavez has been chosen to display her art in a booth at the Festival for several years. “We were thrilled when the votes were tallied and we realized that the committee had chosen Loran’s poster,” he said. “We thought it was great that a member of our Shrimp Fest family won the competition for the official poster. I think it speaks volumes about the qual-

ity of the artists that are chosen by our Fine Arts committee.”

Chavez said she was thrilled to have her art chosen to represent the Festival. “I’ve submitted a poster each year I’ve been chosen to have a booth at the Fes-tival. I guess the fifth time’s a charm,” she said.

VonEberstein said after Chavez was notified she won, she shared a touch-ing story. “It was Loran’s mom who kept encouraging her to keep submit-ting posters for the Shrimp Festival,” she said. “When we called her to let her know she had won, she told me that her mom had passed away the week before. I think her winning is a touching tribute to her mother.”

VonEberstein said the poster Chavez submitted was her personal favorite of the 20 entrants.

The winning poster will be on sale online and at the Chamber’s of-fices in Gulf Shores. Chavez will also be on hand during the Festival to sign and number a limited supply of prints which will be available for purchase. For more of Chavez’s work see her web-site at loranchavez.com.
