2013 Lander Bearcats Baseball

Head Coach Kermit Smith

Kermit Smith became

Lander's fi fth head baseball coach when he was hired in June 2009.

Smith spent eight years as Belmont Abbey’s head coach, and nine overall with the program. During his time there, Smith worked diligently to improve the team athletically and academi-cally. In 2002, he became the young-est head coach in the nation at age 23. That year the team went 35-20, won the conference regular season champi-onship, and just missed on a regional bid.

Smith’s Crusaders, who reached the NCAA Division II World Series for the fi rst time in school history in 2009, fi nished the season with a 40-26 record, and won the Carolinas Confer-ence regular-season title with a 14-5 mark. They qualifi ed for the Regionals by capturing their fi rst-ever Confer-ence Carolinas Tournament title.

In 2008, Smith led the Crusaders to a memorable year, fi nishing the sea-son with a 41-22 record and a trip to the NCAA South Atlantic Regional.

Smith became the winningest coach in Belmont Abbey history on February 4, 2008.

Smith also served as the head coach for the Gaston Braves American Legion team from 2002-2007, guiding them to a 99-62 record. He was also a regular as a speaker at major functions in the surrounding area.

Smith, a native of Arcadia, Fla., graduated from Pfeiffer University and received his master’s degree from California University of Pennsylvania.

He is married to the former Rebecca Hethcox and the couple have one son, Maddox Kilpatrick Smith, who was born June 11, 2007.

The Lander baseball team enjoyed a record-breaking season in 2012, and now face the task of repeating those successes.

In 2012, the Bearcats won a school-record 38 games, reached the Peach Belt Confer-ence Tournament championship game for the fi rst time ever, earned their fi rst at-large bid into the NCAA Divi-sion II Southeast Regional Tournament, and fi nished the season ranked No. 25 nationally.

Lander earned a lot of respect for what all it ac-complished. The Bearcats, who open the 2013 season with a 1:30 p.m., non-conference game at North Greenville on Friday, Feb. 1, received its highest national preseason rank-ing ever at No. 26. In the Peach Belt Conference preseason coaches' poll, Lander tallied one fi rst-place vote and was picked to fi nish fi fth of 13 teams in the league.

Even with all the pre-season hoopla, fourth-year coach Kermit Smith isn't dwelling on the past.

"The life expectancy of any team is one year," said Smith. "You can't gauge this year on last year."

A quick glance at the roster will explain why.

Among those missing this year are leading hitter and All-Peach Belt/All-Re-gion shortstop AJ Nunziato (.345 with seven homers, four triples, 19 doubles and 49 RBI), fi rst baseman Jordan Owens (.289 with nine homers, one triple, 12 doubles, and 56 RBI), designated hitter Kevin Starr (.276 with two homers, one triple, eight doubles and 26 RBI), and outfi elder Kevin Childs (.247 with two homers, fi ve doubles and 15 RBI).

But it was the pitching staff that was hit the hardest. Of Lander's 38 wins, only pitch-ers responsible for four of those victories have returned.

Chris Thomas, the PBC and Southeast Regional Pitcher of the Year, elected to forgo his fi nal year of eligibility when he signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization last summer. Thomas posted an 8-2 record with a 2.43 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 92.2 innings pitched during the season.

Among those pitchers who exhausted their eligibility are Brandon Miller (7-1 overall), Ross Davis (5-3), Scott Elitzky (4-3), Cory Hopper (3-2), Michael White (3-0), Todd Hughson (3-4)and Ches Courtney (1-0).

So, Smith won't gauge this year on the last one."Our returners got a taste of last year and they want to go further than that," said

Smith. "Our strength is our work ethic. The best players go out and work hard every day. I think all of our players have gotten better and that is because that is our strength."

So far, Smith is pleased with the progress of his pitchers.

Kermit Smith became the fi fth head coach of Lander baseball during the 2009-10 academic year.

"They are doing a good job," he said. "They are going to have a lot of different looks and it will be an entirely different staff than last year."

Among the top pitchers, according to Smith, are: Kyle Tate, a junior right-hander who went 3-2 last season with a 3.59 ERA; sophomore left-hander Chess Malone, who transferred from Armstrong Atlantic after posting a 3-1 record with a 3.70 ERA; junior Logan Pemberton, a lefty who transferred from Spartan-burg Methodist; and junior right-hander Dylan Wolchick.

Among the top position players returning are: junior outfi elder/pitcher Patrick Grady, who batted .330 with six homers, nine doubles and 37 RBI; sophomore third baseman Colby Painter, who batted .292 with fi ve homers, fi ve doubles and 19 RBI; senior catcher Jeff May, who batted .257 with four homers, 13 doubles and 35 RBI; and junior second baseman Erik Lunde, who batted .246 with seven doubles and 12 RBI.

The Bearcats will host North Greenville in its home opener at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 2 at Dolny Stadium. After a mid-week game at Benedict College on Wednesday, Feb. 6, the Bearcats will return home for a three-day home stand against top-ranked West Chester on Feb. 8-10.

Lander will open its PBC schedule on Feb. 23-24 when the Bearcats host Young Harris in a three-game series.

And, once again, the Bearcats will have to fare well in the ultra-competitive PBC in order to get a chance to make a repeat appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to Lander, other PBC ranked teams in the national preseason poll are: No. 7 Francis Marion, No. 10 USC Aiken, No. 32 UNC Pembroke, No. 36 Columbus State and No. 38 Armstrong.

Chris Anderson came to Lander in 2009-10 after assisting Coach Kermit Smith at Belmont Abbey

HISTORY

Lander University was founded by Methodist clergyman Samuel Lander in 1872 as Williamston Female College in Wil-liamston, S.C. It remained a private institution for 26 years. In 1898, the College gained support of the South Carolina Confer-ence of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In 1904, the College was relocated to Greenwood, S.C., and was renamed Lander College in honor of its founder.

In 1948, when the Methodist Conference, pursuant to a policy of consolidation in its education efforts, decided to end support of Lander College, interested citizens of Greenwood formed The Lander Foundation as a nonprofi t corporation and leased the College from the Church.

In 1951, the county of Greenwood obtained the College name and property from the Methodist Conference. The South Carolina General Assembly created the Green-wood County Education Com-mission, known as The Lander Foundation, to serve as the board of control for the College. Lander thus became the only four-year lib-eral arts college in the United States to be controlled and fi nanced by a county govern-ment.

On July 1, 1973, Lander College came under the control of the Board of Trustees of the State Colleges of South Carolina, mak-ing Lander a state-supported college. The State College Board of Trustees governed Lander, the College of Charleston and Francis Marion College. Effective July 1, 1988, governance of Lander was vested in the Lander College Board of Trustees.

On July 1, 1992, by action of the Board of Trustees, the insti-tution became Lander University.

Lander was founded as a college for women. Men were admit-ted in 1943, and the institution is now completely coeducational. Lander University subscribes to a policy of equal educational and employment opportunity for all.

Mission StatementGrounded in the belief that education is a liberating force

which makes it possible for an individual to live a life of meaningful activity, of personal satisfaction, and of service to others as a neighbor and a citizen, Lander University has chosen

teaching and learning as its principal concerns and providing a challenging education for qualifi ed students as its mission. Through its liberal arts programs and its professional schools for business, education and nursing, the university offers an under-graduate curriculum that combines a broad liberal education with specialized study leading either to immediate application in a career or to more advanced study. The undergraduate programs provide opportunities for students to achieve competence in a major discipline and to explore a broad core curriculum designed to assist them in developing the ability (1) to gather and criti-cally analyze information from a variety of fi elds and to use that information as a basis for reasoned judgments and for effective problem solving, (2) to synthesize diverse ideas and information, and (3) to understand and convey ideas clearly. In addition to its undergraduate programs, Lander provides a limited number of

master’s programs and post-graduate courses that respond to criti-cal needs of the immediate region and the state. Sup-porting the uni-versity’s role as a teaching institu-tion and recogniz-ing that scholar-ship is essential to establishing and maintaining excellence of in-struction, Lander faculty engage in scholarly and creative activi-ties appropriate to their teaching fi elds. In addi-

tion, the faculty and staff recognize Lander’s responsibility to the public and to the local economy; therefore, the university serves as an intellectual and cultural center and cooperates with various agencies, schools and businesses.

STUDENT ACTIVITIESLander University has over 60 organizations and clubs, each

offering students different opportunities. The choices, challenges and opportunities students face by participating in these organiza-tions will assist them in classes and will allow them to meet new friends and socialize with old friends. There are many different areas to choose from, such as academic organizations, clubs and interest groups, media organizations, club sports, honor-ary societies, religious organizations, and Greek fraternities and sororities.

The 14 current PBC members are: Armstrong Atlantic State University, Augusta State University, Clayton State University, Columbus State Univer-sity, Flagler University, Francis Marion University, Georgia College & State University, Georgia Southwestern, Lander University, Montevallo University, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, North Georgia College & State University, USC Aiken and Young Harris College.

Visit the Peach Belt Conference website at www.peachbeltconference.org.

The NCAALander is one of 254 institutions that are members of NCAA Division II.

The NCAA is a voluntary association of about 1,200 colleges and universities, athletic conferences and sports organizations devoted to the sound administration of intercollegiate athletics.

The colleges, universities and athletic conferences that make up the NCAA appoint volunteer representatives who serve on committees that introduce and vote on rules called bylaws.

The members also establish programs to govern, promote and further the purposes and goals of intercollegiate athletics. The membership is divided into three main divisions: Division I, II and III. Each NCAA division has a separate governing structure and membership representatives from each division that serve on associationwide committees. Visit the NCAA at www.ncaa.org.
