COACHING CONNECTIONS: Buffalo State head coach Jerry Boyes is a 1976 graduate of Ithaca and a member of the Ithaca College Athletics Hall of Fame. He was a two-time All-American quarterback for the Bombers. He joined the Ithaca football coaching staff as offensive coordinator and earned a master’s degree in 1981. During his tenure on Ithaca’s staff, the Bombers were 72-18 and made three appearances in the Stagg Bowl, winning a national championship in 1979. Boyes also coached track & field at Ithaca.

Ithaca assistant coach Jack Mrozinski was a quarterback and long snapper at Buffalo State and won the program’s Al Abgott Award and Coaches Award. He earned a bachelor’s degree in communication and graduated in 2006.

60-PLUS PUNTER: Mike Lopez had punts of 63 and 61 yards in Ithaca’s win at Union. He is the first punter in Ithaca history to have two punts of 60 or more yards in a single game.

PRESEASON RECOGNITION: Placekicker Garrett Nicholson was named as a preseason honorable mention All-American by USA College Football. Nicholson was a perfect 28-for-28 on extra-point attempts as a junior and converted six of nine field-goal attempts.

NEUMANN IN THE RECORD BOOKS: Senior quarterback Phil Neumann stands in the top-10 in three prominent passing categories in Ithaca football history. Neumann is sixth all-time in completions (271), eighth in passing yards (2,965) and eighth in touchdowns (21).

RETURNING ALL-EMPIRE 8 PLAYERS: Five members of the 2013 Ithaca College football team return to the roster after earning All-Empire 8 recognition in 2012. Placekicker Garrett Nicholson and return specialist Sam Carney were all-conference first-team picks. Offensive tackle Pat Stephenson was a second-team selection. Tight end Jared Prugar and defensive tackle Joe Ricotta were honorable mention selections.

EMPIRE 8 PRESEASON POLL: The Ithaca College football team was picked in a tie for fourth place by Empire 8 coaches in the 2013 Empire 8 Football Preseason Coaches Poll. Ithaca earned 28 points in the poll.

The Bombers were 6-4 in the 2012 season and 4-3 in Empire 8 play. Ithaca was the only team to defeat eventual league champion Salisbury last year, the only conference loss that the Sea Gulls have had in their two years as an Empire 8 member. Salisbury was picked to finish first in the 2013 preseason poll, followed by St. John Fisher and Alfred.

EMPIRE 8 HISTORY AND MEMBERSHIP: This season marks the 12th year of Empire 8-sponsored football and the 10th year that the conference’s champion will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs. Frostburg State and Salisbury joined the Empire 8 as affiliate members for the 2011 season. Last year, Buffalo State replaced Springfield as an affiliate member and Brockport is scheduled to join as an affiliate for 2014. The Bombers own an all-time record of 43-18 (.705) in league competition. They were tied for fourth in the conference’s preseason poll. Ithaca won the inaugural Empire 8 title in 2002 and repeated as conference champion in 2003, posting a 4-0 league record each season. In 2004 the Bombers and St. John Fisher tied for the conference title with 5-1 records. In 2005 the Bombers posted the Empire 8’s first 6-0 record en route to their fourth league championship then won the title outright in 2008 with a 5-1 mark. The Bombers also won conference titles in the Independent Athletic Conference (forerunner to the Empire 8) in 1974, 1975, 1976, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1987.
