    President, Group Strategy, Defense Sector, and Chief Brand OfficerMahindra Group, Mumbai, India

    Innovation: A Key to Any Journey of Excellence

    Abstract:Excellence in many ways is often associated with the quality of education at IITs, serving as

    Indias premier technical institutions. However, it will be worthwhile to understand and explorewhat are the constituents of excellence. It is thus proposed to examine the role of innovationwhich is integral to any journey of excellence whether at IIT or the society in which an academicinstitution exists to serve its different stakeholders. A holistic view therefore is taken as to howthe institute, faculty and students can together stimulate innovation on the journey towardsexcellence. Different facets of innovation are also examined here from the perspective ofimplementation.

    Biography:Mr. S. P. Shukla is a Member of the Group Executive Board at Mahindra Groupand as Presidentis responsible for Group Strategy and the Defense Sector. He is also the Chief Brand Officer for

    the Mahindra Group.

    He holds a B. Tech. from IIT BHU in chemical engineering and MBA from IIM Ahmedabad. Hehas over 32 years of rich and varied experience in managing large projects & operations. He is atop professional in the field of automotive tires and Information & Communication Technology(ICT) sectors in India. He introduced Radial Car Tires & Nylon 2-Wheeler tires in India duringhis decade-long inning with Dunlop India. He also introduced first text messaging (SMS) in Indiaand also the first Prepaid Mobile on both GSM and CDMA. He is widely credited with takingmobile telephony to the masses by setting-up telecom infrastructure in the remotest parts of India.

    He has a wide portfolio including Mahindra Annual Planning Cycle, Chief Economist, Chief Risk

    Officer, Performance Monitoring Cell, Centre of Excellence for Innovation, Centre for RuralInsights, Corporate Brand Council and Africa Desk. In 2013, he oversaw and orchestrated acomplete makeover of the Visual Identity of the Mahindra Group, as Mahindra gears up to beamongst the 50 most admired over next decade. Shukla has been the recipient of several awards inhis field and is regularly invited to speak at reputed academic and industry forums. He delivered aTEDxIITBHU Talk in April 2013.

    Former Director, IT BHU & Professor, IIT BHU - ChemicalEngineering Department

    IT BHU to IIT BHU: In Quest for Excellence

    Abstract:Prof. S. N. Upadhyay will highlight the vision of Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviyaji regarding

    engineering education and his philosophy of starting BENCO, MINMET, and TECHNO. He willshare the rationale for their amalgamation into IT BHU, joining the JEE System for admission, theneed for integration with the IIT system, an account of the cooperative efforts made by all whomatter, and finally what we need to do now to achieve excellence at IIT BHU.

    Biography:Born in 1946, Prof. Upadhyay received his M. Tech. in 1964 and Ph. D. in 1969 in chemicalengineering from IT BHU. He joined the Department of Chemical Engineering & Technology in1967 as Lecturer in Chem. Eng. and became Reader in 1979 and Professor in 1984. Prof.Upadhyay has supervised over 85 M. Tech. and M. Sc. dissertations/theses, and 30 Ph.D. theses.

    Prof. Upadhyay served as the Head, Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology during2/1990 to 10/1990 and 11/1991 to 11/1994, Coordinator of the School of Biochemical Engineeringduring 1986 to 1994 and 1998 to 2001, Member, Executive Council of BHU during 1995-1998,and Professor In-charge, Training and Placement Office, IT BHU during 2001-2003. He was theCoordinator of the UGC Supported Special Assistance Program in Chemical Engineering fromMarch 1992 to January 2011, Coordinator of the Centre for Education Technology from July 1995to January 2011, Coordinator, Malaviya Centre for Value Studies, BHU from September, 2004 toApril 2010, Director, IT BHU from February 01, 2005 to January, 31, 2010 and Director,Academic Staff College, BHU from May 2010 to January 2011. He is Fellow, Institute ofEngineers (India), Fellow, Indian National Academy of Engineering, Fellow, National Academyof Sciences India (NASI), and Fellow, Biotech Research Society.

    He is a recipient of IIT BHU Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2013, the Lifetime AchievementAward from the Association of ITBHU Alumni (AIBA) in August 10, 2013. He has been awardedDAE-Raja Ramanna Emeritus Fellowship by the Department of Atomic Energy, Government ofIndia for the period 2013-2016. He is also associated with several social bodies and voluntaryorganizations such as Sankat Mochan Foundation, Swatcha Ganga Campaign, Sri GoswamiTulsidas Educational Society, Tulsi Vidya Niketan, Mahamana Malaviya Foundation, Kesari DeviCharitable Trust, Varanasi, Managing Committee, Kesari Devi Charitable Trust, Arya Mahila PGCollege, Varanasi etc. as member and office bearer.

    Panel 1: Excellence in Education

    Panel Theme:This panel will explore ways to leverage best practices in higher education to achieve excellenceat IIT BHU. Panelists will share their expertise in faculty recruitment, curriculum development,research and entrepreneurship opportunities for students, extra-curricular activities, student

    engagement, and collaboration with other universities in India and abroad.

    Moderator Prof. Akhlesh Lakhtakia, Electronics 1979According to Prof. Akhlesh Lakhtakia, both instruction and research are integral parts of education.Without research, education is perverted into a collection of theological incantations. Without instruction,research becomes tortuous, even tortured. The abilities to absorb extant information, to generate newinformation, and to meld both into ever-expanding knowledge must be inculcated continually right from thekindergarten stage. Dr. Akhlesh developed probably the first course in the US on green engineering, acourse to teach engineering fundamentals to pre-service elementary schoolteachers, as well as a graduatecourse to informally impart engineering education to concerned citizens.

    1. Prof. Brij Agrawal, Mechanical 1964Prof. Brij Agrawal holds Ph.D. from Syracuse University and worked for 20 years (1969-89) in R&D ofcommunications satellites at COMSAT and INTELSAT, and also participated in the development of INSAT1. He wrote first book on spacecraft design and is internationally recognized. He joined in 1989 NavalPostgraduate School, Monterey in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and iscurrently Distinguished Professor. He started Astronautics program and founded Spacecraft Research andDesign Center and Adaptive Optics Center of Excellence for National Security. He is a Fellow of theAmerican Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and elected to the membership of the InternationalAcademy of Astronautics.

    2. Prof. Devesh Kapur, Chemical 1983Prof. Devesh Kapur is the Madan Lal Sobti Associate Professor for the Study of Contemporary India,

    Director, Center for Advanced Study of India, University of Pennsylvania and Non-Resident Fellow at theCenter for Global Development, Washington D.C. and Brookings Institution-National Council of AppliedEconomic Research (New Delhi), India Panel. He is the coauthor of The World Bank: Its First HalfCentury; Give us your Best and Brightest: The Global Hunt for Talent and Its Impact on the DevelopingWorld; Public Institutions in India: Performance and Designand most recently,Diaspora, Democracy and

    Development: The Impact of International Migration from India on Indiaby Princeton University Press.

    3. Prof. V. K. Mathur, Chemical 1953Prof. V. K. Mathur is in teaching and research for about 50 years at the Central Fuel Research Institute (aCSIR Lab), Department of Chemical Engineering, BHU, Oklahoma State University, and the University of

    New Hampshire for 36 years. He retired about 3 years back. In addition, he is involved in inculcatingresearch collaborations between the US Chemical Engineering faculty and those of China/ India for the last10 years. He has conducted 5 workshops with US/ China and the second workshop between US/India willtake place in June, 2014. This project has been funded by the NSF, USA, NNSF, China & USSTF, India.

    4. Prof. G. N. Pandey, Chemical 1962, Ph.D. 1966Prof. G. N. Pandey holds M. Tech. in chemical engineering from IIT Kharagpur and has done post-doctoralResearch at the University of Michigan. He is the founder Vice-Chancellor of Chitrakoot University (2001-2006) and currently serves as a Vice-Chancellor of the Arunachal University of Studies (2012-present). Hehas supervised 27 research schemes, guided about 26 Ph.D., written 14 books, and published 225 researchand technical papers. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor at the Indian Institute of InformationTechnology (IIIT) Allahabad. He is a recipient of numerous Distinguished Service Awards.

    Panel 2: Excellence in Research

    Panel Theme:

    This panel will explore ways to leverage best practices in research, development, technologytransfer, and commercialization to achieve excellence at IIT BHU. Panelists will share their widerange of expertise in academic and applied research with focus on encouraging faculty,

    undergraduate, and graduate students to conduct research, ways to move research to developmentstage, and make IIT BHU a leading edge research institution, par-excellence. I keep six servingmen, they taught me all I know; There names are What, Where, Who, Why, When, and How -Rudyard Kipling.

    Moderator Dr. Vijay Batra, Chemical M. Tech. 1966Dr. Vijay Batra for over 22 years worked on a variety of products that fulfilled an unmet need, or created aneed and developed educational strategy to go along with it. Our focus has always been to deliver a productthat consumers are delighted to use and rave about it. Examples: Thermacare for pain relief; CrestWhitening Strips; Caprenin Low calorie fat; Oil of Olay Soap; Peroxy Acid Bleach and so on. Developedand taught the Methodology of Process Development which is one of the foundational core processes.Taught also Theory of Inventive Problem Solving TIPS. My choicest words WHY? Or, WHYNOT? UNMET NEED.

    Panelists:1. Dr. Anand Kakar, Chemical 1960Dr. Anand Kakar for 35 years has been developing solid film lubricants of graphite and molybdenumdisulfide. His focus has been on particle size reduction and its dispersion. His mastery is in the preparationof colloidal dispersions and application methods of these in dry film lubricants. These lubricants are used indie-casting, and near net-shape forging. His work is being used in wire drawing of alloys in bio-medicaldevices and aerospace industry.

    2. Dr. Akhlesh Lakhtakia, Electronics 1979Dr. Akhlesh Lakhtakia is at Penn State for over 30 years and his research has been focused onelectromagnetic scattering, composite materials and metamaterials, nanomaterials such as sculptured thinfilms and carbon nanotubes, nanophotonics, optical surface waves, surface multiplasmonics, forensicscience, engineered biomimicry, and bone refacing, He firmly believes in covering both depth and breadthto tackle broad inter-disciplinary research issues.

    3. Dr. Pradeep Rohatgi, Metallurgy 1961Dr. Pradeep Rohatgi Served as a founder director of UWM Center for (a) composite and (b) center foradvanced materials manufacturing and (c) and laboratory for foundry and solidification and tribology.Established world leadership in cast metal matrix composite including micro and nano composite, syntheticfoams, self-lubricating, self-healing, and self-cleaning materials. Research funded by NSF, DOE, ONR,ARL, TACOM, EPRI, GM, FORD, ALCAN, COMALCO, GE Healthcare, and Rockwell.

    4. Dr. Mrityunjay Singh, Metallurgy Ph.D. 1983Dr. Mrityunjay Singh hasover 22 years of research, development, technology transfer, andCommercialization experience. Contributed to fundamental research as well as developed a number ofadvanced ceramics and composite technologies for aerospace and energy systems, green andenvironmentally friendly manufacturing technologies, materials for sustainable development, additivemanufacturing, ceramic integration technologies, thermal management materials and systems, in spacerepair technologies for space shuttle orbiter, as well as wide ranging materials for advanced aerospace,energy, and environmental systems.

    Panel 3: Excellence in Entrepreneurship

    Panel Theme:This panel will leverage combined experience of the panelists to create a Startup Owners Manual for buddingEntrepreneurs. Panelists will address - to start a company, or join a startup, how to raise capital, how tonegotiate with VCs, how to negotiate stock options, how to develop first customers, and when to take theventure public. They will share practical tips and dos and donts when going down the path of entrepreneurship.The panel will also provide suggestions at IIT BHU to prepare students to be entrepreneurs while still in school.

    Moderator Mr. Ujjual Nath, Metallurgy 1979Chairman, Founder, and CEO of mykaarma.com (founded 2008) a services platform designed to streamline the carownership experience while promoting trust and transparency between Dealers and Car owners. Previously he wasPresident, CEO and Co-Founder of Syncata Corporation, an automotive distribution management solutions firm thatrevolutionized new car distribution in North America. He has raised significant growth capital from JP Morgan ChaseCapital and ABS Capital. He started his first company after graduating from IIT-BHU where he manufactured HeavyEarth Moving Equipment Spare Parts for the mining Industry. He holds an MBA from the University of Texas.

    Panelists:1. Mr. Vikas Agrawal, Chemical 1995Vikash Agrawal, Chairman and co-founder of Etransmedia Technology, an award winning healthcaretechnology company, combined his business and technology experience to build an organization with 500employees located in 7 US cities. Etransmedia provides software and services to over 12,000 healthcare

    providers, connecting three million patients across 45 states. Previously, Vikash worked in Ariba, GE, andSymantec. He holds an MBA from Harvard and dual MS in Engineering and Management from RensselaerPolytechnic Institute.

    2. Dr. Vaikunth Nath Gupta, Electronics 1974Dr. Vaikunth Nath has 30 years of business experience through 3 successful ventures in R&D and hardwaremanufacturing, software, and consulting services. The ventures have relied on various forms of financing and exitstrategies. He is a currently a General Partner of The Panum Group, a privately held, Maryland area company.The Panum Group focuses on public sector consulting opportunities in IT, Finance, Nutrition, and Acquisitionand Management of related products/services. A growth area is programmatic support for the Nutrition Programs.

    3. Dr. Pradeep Haldar, Metallurgy 1984Dr. Pradeep Haldar serves as Vice President of Entrepreneurship Innovation and Clean Energy Programs atthe College of Nanoscale Science & Engineering (CNSE). His activities are centered around world-classentrepreneurship and commercialization of nanotech, clean energy and solar PV ecosystems. He is responsiblefor building open innovation capabilities, strategic alliances, business and technology strategy, technology

    portfolio management, and incubation.

    4. Dr. Sanyasi Raju Kalidindi, Pharmacy 1973, M. Pharm. 1975Dr. Sanyasi Kalidindi has 35 years experience in the pharma industry. After working for Wyeth and BurroughsWellcome, he joined start-up generic pharmaceutical company in NY as a partner in 1986, but this companyclosed down due to issues with FDA. Sanyasi then started GlobePharma in 1993 and has 15 patents on designs of

    tools and equipment for the pharma industry. In 1998, he cofounded Natreon, Inc. with a mission to bringAyurveda to prominence in the western world.

    5. Mr. Mohan Krishnan, Mechanical 1979Mr. Mohan Krishnan joined Encell in February of 2013 as its President and Chief Executive Officer. Prior tojoining Encell, Mr. Krishnan ran the Rolls Royce, NA Industrial/Marine Business Division (former AllisonEngine Company). Mr. Krishnan holds an M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT.

    Panel 4: Excellence in Social Service

    Panel Theme:This panel will explore ways to give back to less fortunate people in the Society including givingback to our alma mater. The focus is on education, environment, health care, student scholarships,and technology upgrades at the IIT BHU campus hostels. A discussion will ensue on how to

    engage IIT BHU students in social service.

    Moderator Dr. Manu K. Vora, Chemical 1968Dr. Manu Vora is active in Social Responsibility area since 1970. He is the Founder Director and Presidentof the Blind Foundation for India (BFI) since 1989 and raised over $3.5 million serving 15 million blindpeople in India. He holds M.S. and Ph.D. in chemical engineering and MBA with marketing management.He is the Chairman and President of Business Excellence, Inc., a global quality management firm. Since1970, he has worked with over 30 major charitable and social projects to raise over $8 million.

    Panelists:1. Dr. Raghava Gowda, Electrical 1971Dr. Raghava Gowda is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science, University of

    Dayton. He holds Master of Business Management (MBM) from BHU. He completed his MBIS and Ph.D.in Computer Information Systems from the Georgia State University in 1988. He has a post graduatediploma in Numerical Analysis and Automatic Computing and also in Indian History and Culture for hiscredit. Currently, he is working on establishing an Agriculture, Information Sciences, and Management(AIM) Institute (a nano BHU) at his home-town in Karnataka modeled after Community Colleges inUSA.

    2. Mr. Naresh C. Jain, Mechanical 1967Naresh Jain came to the United States in 1969. He graduated from Cornell University in 1970 with a M.S. inMechanical Engineering. He started his career in men's clothing business and became executive vice

    president of a fortune 500 company. In 1999, he purchased his first car wash. Now his children are alsoinvolved in the car wash business. He wants to help very intelligent poor students. There is no other better

    place to accomplish his goal than giving scholarship to IITBHU students.

    3. Mr. Ujjual Nath, Metallurgy 1979Ujjual Nath was one of the first Presidents of the IIT-BHU alumni association in USA and conceived of WI-FI access at IIT-BHU. In 2006, he raised $55,000 from alumni and enabled the departments of MaterialScience, Metallurgy, Mining, and the De Hostel with WI-FI. He is in the process of raising more money tocomplete the hostel part of the project. He supports the Sambhavana Trust in Bhopal to help the Bhopal GasTragedy victims.

    4. Prof. S. N. Upadhyay, Chemical M. Tech., 1964, Ph.D. 1969Prof. S. N. Upadhyay is the former IT-BHU Director from 2005-2010. He joined the Department of

    Chemical Engineering & Tech., IT BHU in 1967 as Lecturer in Chem. Eng. and became Reader in 1979 and

    Professor in 1984. Prof. Upadhyay has supervised 80 M. Tech. and M.Sc. dissertations/theses, and 30 Ph.D.theses. Prof. Upadhyay has been the Head, Department of Chemical Engineering and Tech. during February

    1990 to October 1990 and November 1991 to November 1994. He is involved with Sankat Mochan

    Foundation, Swatcha Ganga Campaign, Sri Goswami Tulsidas Educational Society, Mahamana Malaviya
