YWCA WHITE PLAINS & CENTRAL WESTCHESTERENCORE PLUS PROGRAMGrantee of the Year Award

Accepted by LORI STANLICK

Westchester County, often thought of as home to wealthy New Yorkers, has amuch more ethnically and socioeconomically diverse population. Too many ofthese residents lack access to the breast health care they deserve.

The Encore Plus Program of the YWCA White Plains & Central Westchester issaving lives by bringing outreach education and breast cancer screenings towomen who are rarely or never seen by a healthcare professional. These hard-to-find individuals include uninsured African-Americans, Latinas and new andundocumented immigrants. The program focuses on southern Westchester butserves the whole county.

“We know that undocumented women, women of color, vulnerable women, whohave never or rarely have been seen by healthcare providers, are in every part ofWestchester County, explained Lori Stanlick, Associate Executive Director of theYWCA White Plains & Central Westchester. “It’s our mission and passion to findthem and link them to care.”

Program staff visit over 100 sites in the county — churches, community centers, day treatment programs, ESL classes, food pantries, municipal and seniorhousing providers, and senior centers — delivering bilingual breast healtheducation and distributing Komen-approved materials tailored to African-Americans, Latinas and seniors.

Attendees learn about the importance of knowing one’s breast health history andwhy mammography is so vital. They are walked through the process, whichculminates in the scheduling of a screening appointment. Encore Plus has 350free annual screening slots with the Cancer Services Program (CSP) of HudsonValley, a state-funded breast and cervical cancer screening program.

Once the appointment is made, the patient is contacted and reminded of thedate/time of her screening a week in advance. This call also serves as anopportunity to assess the barriers that are preventing the woman from receivingcare. These calls have been extremely effective. Not one woman has missed herappointment.

The CSP directly contacts the patient about her screening results but also informsEncore Plus, allowing staff to follow up. Women with positive diagnoses receivepatient navigation services through the CSP.

The Komen Greater NYC grant has helped YWCA to hone the program by hiring afull complement of bilingual staff, as well as do research that allows it to find andserve the people who are in most need.
