FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

In eight short years, the Cleantech Open has grown from a Bay Area organization to one that serves cleantech entrepreneurs nationally and globally.

It’s all possible, of course, because of you. You are the Cleantech Open – every one of you who mentors a company or volunteers at registration, or buys a ticket to the Global Forum.

Ultimately, of course, the Cleantech Open and this event are all about the entrepreneurs with the big ideas. By tomorrow evening’s closing ceremony, 865 companies with big ideas will have graduated from the United States Accelerator. With your help, their chances of success and their shot at making an impact, are dramatically enhanced. Over 50% of graduate companies who are still in business (and the majority still are) have now raised third-party capital. They’ve created thousands of jobs. Their technologies address some of the world’s most pressing challenges – and that’s no idle claim: some of those technologies, as you’ll see over the next two days, are truly remarkable.

The Global Forum is your unique chance to meet all these innovators in person. Vote for the most promising in the Demo Theater and on the main stage. Cheer them on at the final judging on Thursday afternoon, and the Academy Awards of Cleantech that evening. And please thank them for spending their time and talents on big ideas that really can make a real difference.

Rex

Committed to eco-innovationWells Fargo is dedicated to reducing our environmental impact through continued company-wide initiatives that minimize our energy consumption, reduce waste, and support renewable sources of energy. As part of this commitment, we’re spurring economic development in the global “green” economy to encourage innovation by entrepreneurs and research entities working on critical environmental issues.

Because there’s still so much more we can do, Wells Fargo established a set of environmental commitments to be achieved by 2020 — including $100 million in environmental grants to create a “greener” future for the communities we serve. With our Clean Technology and Innovation grant program, we hope to encourage technological advancements, which are essential to a clean energy future for our communities.

Since 2005, Wells Fargo has provided $21 billion in environmental finance to support the global economy and environment, and we continue to invest in the protection our environment.

We congratulate all who are working to develop America’s clean technology infrastructure and are proud to be a sponsor of the 2013 Clean Tech Open.

PARC, a Xerox company, is deeply engaged in technology development for energy and clean water. And PARC has a long history of helping

startups. That’s why we partnered with the Cleantech Open to bring the best cleantech technologies to market.

Startups have access to talent, coaching, and funding from VCs, angels, and accelerators. But what’s often missing is access to capital-intensive

infrastructure and specialized expertise. PARC’s open innovation services can help startups accelerate time-to-market and reduce some of the risks

they face early on. When working with startups, we go beyond typical entrepreneur-in-residence or incubator support by co-developing custom

technology and augmenting internal capabilities, helping companies avoid some of the pitfalls in the R&D phase and create new business options.

When PARC became an independent company in 2002, cleantech was identified as one of the first opportunities to use our world-class

competencies and expertise in order to impact important global challenges. Today, PARC’s cleantech and energy programs have delivered

breakthroughs in battery management and performance, clean water, algae dewatering, solar efficiency, data center energy savings, vehicle power

system control, direct-carbon fuel cells, cooling systems, and more.

Cleantech startups working with PARC can conquer challenges, advance technology, secure funding, and maximize their work because of our deep

history of innovation, intellectual property (IP), commercialization expertise, industry-leading team of experts, and internal research capabilities,

equipment, and prototyping. PARC’s track record of seeding and creating technologies through the startup ecosystem includes dozens of

successes such as PowerCloud Systems, HexaTech, glō-USA, Power Assure, and Powerset.

If you’re a cleantech startup or an investor interested in working with PARC, please email us at [email protected]. www.parc.com
