2013 Fall Sports PreviewGulf Coast Newspapers • GulfCoastNewsToday.com
Coming off a season-ending victory a year ago overEscambia County the Tigers finished 2012 with a 1-9record bringing their record over the last three sea-sons to just 2-28.
This season the Tigers bring in a slew of players, especially on offense, that Moore hopes will be thestart of a turnaround that the Tigers have been look-ing for the past three sea-sons.
“We have some goodfootball players on offenseespecially up front. Wehave had some new guysstep up and play new posi-tions,” Moore said. “Offen-sively I think we have achance to be a pretty goodfootball team.”
Unlike the offense, thedefense seems to be lack-ing experience up front.Finding continuity upfront should go a long waytowards a successful sea-son for the Tigers.
“We lost a lot of guys up front, defensive backs andsafeties,” Moore said. “We are young up front butsometimes youthful enthusiasm is a good thing.”
The Tigers who were so strong on the offensive linegoing into last season will have the responsibility ofrebuilding another young group for the rebuildingtigers.
“Eddie Jeselink is the only guy we have comingback for us this year. It’s not a very big group this yearbut overall we still average between 250 to 260 lbs.,”he said. “I don’t think it’s a big group but these 5, 6, 7guys will be pretty good.”
Coming into his first season a year ago Moore un-derstood that he had acquired a rebuilding project, aproject that continues to be an uphill battle for himand the tigers.
“It’s an ongoing process; from year to year what-ever happened last year really doesn’t make a differ-ence. That’s the way it is in college and the NFL,”Moore said. “I think the big thing is that our guys needto understand that the game is played at a differentlevel than where we have been playing. I think we aregetting closer every day.”
The 2013 version of the Tiger rebuilding projectwill be led by starting quarterback Andre Davis whostarted at cornerback a season ago.
“I think it should help him in the pocket and thosetypes of things but you still have to go out there andmake throws,” Moore said about Davis convertingfrom defensive back to quarterback. “He is an athletewho has actually started a few games over the last fewyears when injuries have occurred.”
With Davis expecting to get the bulk of the snapsthis season, he and the Tigers will continue a trend inthe county that sees the majorities of the teams bring-ing in a new starting quarterback in 2013.
The Tigers in 2013 will match-up against foes thatarguably are part of the toughest 6A region in thestate of Alabama. They will face tough opponentsaway from Simmons Field this season like theDaphne Trojans as well as the Foley Lions. They alsohave to make the long trip up to Dothan to play secondyear Region 2 member Northview.
Fairhope and Robertsdale make up the regionalhome schedule for the Tigers. The Tigers’ schedulealso comprises of two non-regional games beginningwith an exhibition home game against Theodore. Theywill also host Gulf Shores later in the season.
The 2013 schedule for the Tigers open up on Au-gust 30 when they host Theodore. Kick-off is set for 7p.m.

Bayside Academy AdmiralsClass 3A, Region 1
By TONy [email protected]
Head coach: Phil Lazenby2012 Record: 7-5Key players:Hunter Slater (Sr. QB), Greg Parker (Sr. RB/DB), Tripp Puckett (Sr.RB/DB), Garris Goe (Sr. LB), Zack Dyass (Sr.RB/LB)First game: Aug. 30 at Charles Henderson
TONy WHITEHEAd/GCN Sports
The Admirals 3A Region 1 lineup is well stockedwith contenders for the region crown.
Bayside Academy’s fundamental formations andsets will look the same as the past which have takenthe Admirals to five-straight playoff appearances, anundefeated season and a Region title under Lazenby’stutelage.
“We won’t tinker with too much. But we have lostsome good players," Lazenby said of the spring grad-uation toll which in-cluded the program’sfirst Division I footballsignee Jonathan Wal-ton, who chose SouthCarolina where he willplay linebacker.
Walton played bothways at Bayside asmany if not most var-sity players do. But nothaving the 225-poundmulti-threat rusher/re-ceiver and LB on eitherside may affect the Ad-mirals game plans tosome extent. But notfrom a tactical point of view as Lazenby said. Theyalso lost Bayside’s all-time rushing record holder JoeStassen to matriculation. Stassen gained over 1,000yards as a junior and again as a senior and also wasa leading tackler in the secondary.
“We have some new faces, but our plan of attackand defense is basically the same,” Lazenby said.“We’ll still do the same stuff, but with different peoplein some spots. But we are a running football team. Wehave to be able to do that consistently, then take ad-vantage of any passing opportunities we can. We aregoing to run the football.”
Some key players returning for the Admirals in-clude starters Hunter Slater at quarterback, an ex-perienced running back/receiver corps in TrippPuckett III, Zack Dyass, Landon Lasseter, Greg Wal-lace and Ivy-League recruit tight end Garris Goe.Some other key role players will include Andy Citrin,William Fleming and Spencer Rosenbaum. Up frontthe interior line will be lead by center Will Speir andsophomores Jack Heaby and Austin Chastain.
Lazenby added that defense has to rise to meetthe challenge of a tough schedule and preparing forthe season will mean setting the best possible defensein time for region play.
“I believe we’ll be ahead of the (learning) curve onour offense since we have pretty much ingrained oursystem on most of our players as they come up andwe have several returning. But on defense this year,it’s basically the same but with different people.
“So right now I’m trying to get as many peopleinto the game as I can, evaluate, make decisions andhope we find who and what works. And that meansputting the best defense we can come up with on thefield with as many different people as possible, espe-cially early on, because heat and fatigue are factorsthat take a toll. I don’t care how good the conditioninglevel is, you can watch film of those early games andeven later in the fall and see kids dragging. We hopeto avoid that, but keep our overall drive-stoppingquality high.”
He also said that special teams are always impor-tant. “You can never overestimate the kicking game. Some of the biggest plays in a game are a blockedpunt or a long punt or kick-off return. An onside kick,a fumble. It’s a good phase of the game to make thingshappen, take advantage if and as often as you can. So

Last year the2012 seasonopener for both
Daphne and SpanishFort was dedicated toDaphne assistantcoach Jacy Todd andhis recovery.
Todd had been in thehospital in intensive carefor more than a monthafter a traffic accident onhis way to practice nearlytook his life.
Spinal surgery fol-lowed by months of inten-sive therapy and gruelingrehab in Atlanta paid offwith much improvementin his lower-limb paraly-sis. And even though hecan now stand unaided forbrief periods, the outsidelinebacker and golf coachis still dependent on awheel chair most of thetime. The kickoff betweenthe Toros and Trojans forthe 2013 season will alsobe dedicated to him, butthis time he will be thereat Jubilee Stadium.
“We are so happy tohave coach Todd back atwork,” said Daphne headcoach Glenn Vickery.“Back at it full speed, fulltime, doing a great job asusual. We expect nothingbut the best from JacyTodd. It’s a real excitingtime for all of us, the play-ers and coaches to be herewith him again havinghim doing what he loves. It motivates all of us togive our best at what wedo and follow his example. He is such a gracious andgiving person and terrificrole model for our kids. And he’s a great coach.”
Daphne linebackerMyles Pierce said Toddwas an inspiration to theteam. “He really gets usmotivated, brings out ourbest. Just so thankful tohave him back where hebelongs.”
Todd, who also teachesHistory, said that encour-aging his players to givetheir best on the field isjust an extension of theclassroom where he ex-pects the same efforts.
“It’s about teaching. Not just what you knowabout football or a subject,
but teaching the love oflearning it, too,” he said. “Ilove teaching and lovecoaching. So I’m not reallydoing anything different, just have to do it from thischair a lot. If I can haveany positive influence on astudent or player to be thebest they can, then I’mdoing my job.”
Todd continues to workwith the weights alongwith the players as well ashis own therapy, gettingstronger and looking for-ward to the season.
“Very excited about theseason,” he said. “We havesome great kids comingback and some really goodyounger players who willbe contributing. I think wewill have a good team anda great defense, as usual,”
he added with a big grin.“Vonte Young, Myles
Pierce, Luke Broadus,Tevin Dailey, Trent Ellisare just some. They canplay and are just a greatbunch and will be big lead-ers for us. They have fun,but also work hard allyear and set a good exam-ple for the others. Veryproud of them and lookingfor great things this sea-son.”
He sees the Trojan de-fense getting ready tohave a strong year withmajor support from thelinebackers. One of thethings to work on is put-ting the 7-on-7 pass-onlymind-set away.
“We use 7-on-7 to workon pass defense and it’sgood for that, but we teach
kids to play the run first. So now we concentrate ondriving that point. Youwant to get out of that 7-on-7 mentality of pass, pass, pass and focus onbeing run stoppers. Stayhome, play run, then pass, because if you can stop therun you will probably forcea pass more times thanthey (the other team) wantto or when they don’t re-ally want to. And that cancreate opportunities, too.
“But at the same time, you can’t be too overly ag-gressive for the run or youcan get burned. So youwork on both as much asyou can and by the begin-ning of the season, youhope to have a good bal-anced approach. We al-ways have fourlinebackers, but they willadjust depth with differ-ent fronts and do otherthings depending on theoffense’s set.”
Todd is also the Tro-jans’ golf coach and is ableto stand and practice hisgolf swing again. “That’sfun,” he said. “I miss it,but I will be back out thereon the course again and onmy feet.”
He and his wifeDyeatra and daughterRaegan, visited the At-lanta rehab hospital,Shepherd Center, in July.
“We had a good time, saw a lot of the therapistsagain. It was kind of sur-real going back there now.To see other people whoare now in the early stagesof their injury and know-ing what they’re goingthrough. Brought a lot of itback. But it was good to beable to talk to them andencourage them to keepworking at getting better. It’s hard, but you just haveto keep going and if you doyou will see some improve-ment. We talked abouthow you just can’t give up.
“Of course, I’ve been sofortunate to have such agreat wife, Dyeatra, she isjust amazing. I thoughtshe already was, but Iknow more than ever nowhow lucky I am. This hasbeen hard on her. She doesso much. And our wholefamily and so many won-derful friends have doneso much for us.
“I’m truly blessed,”Todd said.

Head coach: Glenn Vickery2012 Record: 8-4Key players:Zack Morgan(Sr. QB), Wheylan Tol-bert (Sr. WR), TJ Reed (Jr. RB), Khael Sanford (Jr.LB), Myles Pierce (Sr. LB), Khalil Yelding (Jr. DL),Chris White (Jr. OL), Daniel Meadows (Sr. OL)First game: Home Aug. 30 vs. Spanish Fort
But parting words may have a different, “je ne saisquoi”—French for that certain sump’um-sump’um—because only half the sold-out, standing-room-onlycrowd, will be as jolly going out the gate.
Last year’s first-ever varsity football meeting be-tween the two schools went to the Toros 20-14. Span-ish Fort went on to claim the 2012 5A state title. “Butthat was then,” said Daphne head coach Glenn Vick-ery. “It’s time to put that game aside and get ready forthe next one.”
The Trojans won the6A Region 2 title lastyear and went on to fin-ish the post-season inthe second round withan 8-4 record. Less thanpar for Vickery, whoseteams usually have dou-ble-digits in the W col-umn.
“We are not satisfiedwith 8-4 seasons,” hesaid. “These guys (re-turning starters) haveto be better. If our guysgo out and play at thehighest level, we’ll beokay.
“Of course, we’re notthere yet. Not the football team we’re striving to be.We’ll be satisfied when we reach our full potential. Iwant our kids to push themselves to be their best. Ourgoal is to be 15-0 and be in Tuscaloosa at the end ofthe year. That’s always our goal. If we don’t get therebut we did everything we could to be the best we couldbe, then there’s nothing to hang our heads about. Sowe still have work to do and will each week, it neverstops until the season is over. Last year we lost to avery good Opelika team. They were a good team play-ing well at the time and I thought our effort was good.If we don’t play better than last year, we’ll be 8-4again.”
Two-year starting quarterback T.J. Fleeton gradu-ated and left the signal-caller job open. “That is alwaysa big position to fill,” Vickery added. Senior ZacharyMorgan is the likely starter with sophomores JohnQuinnelly and Jordan Weaver in line.
“But we have to improve in all areas, every phase, offense, defense and the kicking teams. Special teamsare always important. We’ll never be perfect all thetime but we will strive for that and hope it translatesinto wins for us on the field.” Vickery said.
The Trojans will look for on the field leadershipfrom a number of seniors, particularly linebackerMyles Pierce, who agrees with Vickery about needingto improve in many areas and in believing it will.
“We definitely need to improve our physicalityfrom last year,” Pierce — brother of 2010 state cham-pionship MVP Michael Pierce— said.
In 2010, the state champs from Daphne gave upless than 7 points per game. It was a little higher in2011, but last year slipped to 24 ppg.
“Last year, we gave up too many points and putour offense in bad situations too much. That has tochange this year, and I think it will,” Pierce said.
Offensive threat Wheylan Tolbert said Morgan isvery capable of running the Trojan attack and hasgood accuracy passing.
“We will be fine at quarterback,” he said. “I’ve beenplaying with Zack. He understands my game, and Iunderstand his. T.J. might throw harder, but Zackthrows a good deep ball. He places it where only youcan catch it.”
“We’ll be satisfiedwhen we reach our full
potential. I want ourkids to push them-
selves to be their best. Our goal is to be 15-0and be in Tuscaloosa
(Super 6) at the end ofthe year. That’s always
our goal.”

They began the playoffs with a victory at LaddPeebles Stadium against Davidson 10-0.
The Pirates lost the following week at homeagainst Carver-Montgomery 20-16 to end the season.
The Pirates scored a total of 358 points last seasonwhile only surrender-ing 237.
This season, headcoach Adam Winegar-den is burdened withthe task of overhaulinga team that sees onlytwo guys return on de-fense and five on of-fense.
“It’s going to be ajourney. Every team isdifferent; the 2013team will be differentthan the 2012 teamjust like the 2014 teamwill be different thanthis team,” Winegardensaid. “We have a lot of new faces but I feel like we area very capable team.”
Just because the players joining the ranks are newstarters Winegarden believes they have potential todo great things.
“We are going to be fairly inexperienced when itcomes to the guys we will have on the field,” Winegar-den said. “We have guys that I believe are capable it’sjust going to be a journey and how they mature andlearn their roles on the team. Football is like a beau-tiful puzzle, a team game.”
One person the Pirates hope they can count on isstarting quarterback Grey Jackson. Jackson will takeover an offense that scored just under 30 points pergame a year ago. If not for an injury in the gameagainst the Trojans, Jackson would have resumed thestarting job throughout the rest of the season.
“He went through a great learning process (lastseason). He had two starts in two competitive gameshe is a physical character who loves to compete,” Wine-garden said. “He is also a polished passer and I am ex-cited to watch him play over the course of the seasonand to see him develop.”
Winegarden, who is entering his second year inBaldwin County with the Fairhope Pirates after leav-ing Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa, learned a lot in his first sea-son in 6A Region 2.
“I think from top to bottom, even if the teamdoesn’t have a good record they can still beat you, be-cause they have talent. I think every team you’re

The Lions have reached the playoffs for eight con-secutive years and averaged more than eight wins perseason over the same period under the direction ofhead coach Todd Watson. The Lions finished with an8-4 record and fell to Spain Park in the second roundof the 6A playoffs lastseason.
“The expectationsare always the sameand our job is to be thebest we can be,” Watsonsaid. “8-4 is pretty goodbut we want to be bet-ter than that. We canwin by being good play-ers, a good team andgood people. We havethat streak of being inthe playoffs and that’swhat our expectationsare. To get there andthen to make a runonce we get there.”
Consistency is something Watson hopes to getmore of from his players this season.
“There were times last season when we didn’t playall four quarters,” Watson said. “The matter of consis-tency is something that we need to get a handle on.That comes from work ethic and being able to stay fo-cused throughout a full season.”
Senior defensive lineman Shawn Sanks echoedWatson’s sentiment.
“We could have been more consistent in finishinggames last season,” Sanks said. “Our common goalthis year has to be that every game should be playedlike it is a championship game.”
Foley will start either sophomore newcomer BraxGarrett or last season’s JV starter Tyler Cameron atquarterback. Watson said Cameron had gotten mostof the reps this summer while Garrett was away play-ing summer baseball in the East Cobb (Ga.) league.
Whether Foley’s quarterback is Cameron or Gar-rett the Lions have a pair of dangerous pass catchersin Demarcus Bingham and Valontai Adams.
At 6-3, 215-pounds Bingham is a highly touted re-cruit with interest from Alabama, Auburn, UAB,South Alabama, Western Kentucky, JacksonvilleState, Cincinnati and others.
“We want to play hard every game,” Bingham said.“We’ve been training hard and hitting the weightroom hard to get ready.”
The Foley program has been in the recruiting spot-light before, with NFL players Julio Jones, RobertLester and DJ Fluker all graduating out of Watson’sprogram.
“This game should be played for the love of thegame, the love of the school, the love of the commu-nity,” Watson said. “Because of the widespread atten-tion on recruiting sometimes that becomes the focus. But the focus should be to go out there and play thegame, to go work your tail off and play hard.”
The 6-1, 185-pound Adams has also received inter-est from schools like Alabama, Auburn, MississippiState, Southern Miss and Missouri according to247sports.com. He said he and Bingham share afriendly rivalry of sorts.
“I’m very competitive with Demarcus, but it isn’tabout going out and getting more catches than him,”Adams said. “It is about going out there and playinghard.”

Half of the Dolphins’ six losses were by a touch-down or less, and all of them came against 5A, Region1 opponents. Losses against Williamson (16-9),LeFlore (34-31) and Faith Academy (42-38) kept theDolphins out of the playoffs. The region is consideredone of the most competitive in the state.
“Our region istough. You’ve got Span-ish Fort, the defendingstate champs and St.Pauls and Vigor werein the quarterfinalsand semis last year,”Gulf Shores head coachBen Blackmon said.“Those teams havebeen the top threeteams in our regionevery year. We are try-ing to get to that level.”
Gulf Shores senior defensive lineman Lenzy Reeseremembers the hardest thing about losing close gamesthat kept them out of the playoffs.
“I think the hardest part of those losses was thebus ride home,” Reese said. “It’s hard to take when youhave to ride home and think about how close you wereto the playoffs. That’s what drives us this year.”
Blackmon will have eight returning starters on de-fense and six on offense, including senior center LeeMichael McVay.
“Lee Michael is the brains of our offensive line,”Blackmon said. “He makes all the calls for us and canplay just about anywhere along the line. He started atcenter last year and tackle the year before.”
“We have so many more seniors this year that sawwhat it was like to lose so many close games,” McVaysaid of last year’s losses. “This year we have experi-ence in knowing how to close those games out. “
McVay is one of four seniors on the Gulf Shores of-fensive line this season.
“We have a lot of experience,” McVay said. “It isprobably the smallest group I’ve been around here, but it is also the smartest, fastest and most disciplinedone.”
Senior strong safety Parker Mason, who playedquarterback and safety last season, returns for theDolphins.
“Parker is a special athlete,” Blackmon said. “He isa kid who every coach would want on their team. Hecan play any skill position, he can play anywhere. Weare going to utilize him as much as we can to get himinvolved in the game.”
Mason doesn’t care where he plays as long as he ison the field.
“I will play whatever position (Blackmon) needsme to play,” Mason said. “I like playing safety, also likequarterback. I just like to be around the ball.
“I’ve been part of this team for four years and thisyear we’ve been closer than we have before. We’ve be-come a real team. Younger guys are stepping up. Ithink with some senior help we can get them all readyto close out games.”
Senior linebacker Chris Carlisle said he looks atthe Dolphin defense like they are his brothers.
“We’ve been playing together on defense since wewere sophomores,” Carlisle said. “It feels like a family. These guys are my brothers.”
Gulf Shores opens on the road at Satsuma on Aug.30.The Dolphins open region play with a home gameagainst Faith Academy Sept. 6 then travel to face rivalSpanish Fort on Sept. 13.
“I’ve been part of thisteam for four years and
this year we’ve beencloser than we have
before. We’ve becomea real team.”
-Gulf Shores senior strongsafety Parker Mason
The Gulf Shores Dolphins hope to turnthe bad feelings from last year’s 4-6campaign into a successful 2013 sea-
son in the competitive Class 5A Region 1.

“We worked a lot in the off-season on our strengthand conditioning and I believe it’s starting to pay off,”said Campbell, who finished 1-9 in his first season atRHS. “Last year we averaged 16 missed tackles pergame and that all goes back to strength and condition-ing. In our spring game against Theodore we only hadfour missed tackles and that was both JV and varsity,so it’s definitely made adifference.”
Building confidenceis also key, Campbellsaid, for a team whosewins have been few andfar between over thelast several years.
“Our goal is to comeout and be competitivein every game this sea-son,” he said. “We needto give ourselves andchance to win thosegames we’re supposedto win and we need towin some games we’re not supposed to win. If we cando that, I believe this team will take off.”
Campbell said while all of his players have beenworking hard in the offseason to get better, he sees thebiggest improvement in his defense.
“We’ve got experience at every position defen-sively,” he said. “That’s going to be a big key for us thisyear. Our final game last year, we put up 40 points andthen some and still lost. We’ve got to do a better jobmaking stops in order to win some games this year.”
Campbell will be looking for senior leadership ondefense, including linebacker Kaleb Coleman andlinemen Emmanuel Fennel and Jonathan Wright, aconverted linebacker. Robertsdale also boasts return-ing seniors in the defensive backfield, including TaylorGarrison and T.J. Taylor.
Campbell will also be looking for some youngerplayers to step up defensively, including safety R.J.Koen and linebacker Tyler Reeves, a pair of sopho-mores.
Offensively, the Golden Bears will have a lot ofgaps to fill this season, none bigger than with the lossof Alphonso Stewart, who was converted from a re-ceiver to quarterback to begin the season, then movedback to receiver later in the year.
Junior Dylan Smith, who took the majority ofsnaps under center for the Golden Bears after Stewartwent back to wideout, will most likely fill the quarter-back duties for RHS this year.
“He had a great offseason,” Campbell said. “He’shad a good spring and summer and did well in our 7on 7 competitions. We’re really looking to him to stepup and be a leader on offense.”
A pair of seniors, Tyler Davis and Colton Mosleyat the H-back position, are the only returning skillplayers on offense for the Bears this season. JuniorDeMarcus Robinson will also see a lot of playing timeat the running back position.
“We’re going to be playing a lot of sophomores thatI believe will get better and better as the year pro-gresses,” Campbell said. “We’re going to be reallyyoung up front and at the receiver position but we’regoing to continue to play a fast-paced game and try toget in as many plays as we can offensively.”
Fewer turnovers and fewer mistakes on specialteams will also be a key for the Golden Bears this sea-son, Campbell said, as they open up on the roadagainst Satsuma for a preseason game on Aug. 23 be-fore kicking off the regular season at home against
“We need to give our-selves and chance to
win those games we’resupposed to win andwe need to win somegames we’re not sup-
posed to win. If we cando that, I believe this
team will take off.”
-Robertsdale head coachBrian Campbell
Robertsdale Golden Bears second-yearhead coach Brian Campbell alreadysees a lot of improvement from last
year’s squad.

Spanish Fort, Alabama
Mascot: Toros
Colors: Black and Red
Overall record: 62-28
State titles: 2010, 2012
Longest rivalry: vs. Vigor, 10
games since 2006 (ahsfhs.org)
This year’s Toros will be no less talented but muchless experienced, but head coach Mark Freeman isn’tgoing to let the defending 5A state champions makeexcuses because of it.
The Toros finished 14-1 and beat McAdory in the5A championship game in Auburn in December be-hind a big, talented senior class and a two-year starterat quarterback. Those guys aren’t coming back, butFreeman expects noth-ing but the best fromthe team he has.
“We always expectgood things,” Freemansaid. “We aren’t goingto make any excusesabout how young weare or who we lost fromlast year. We are goingto go to work every dayto win the games weare supposed to win. Ifwe win all the rightgames we will be in theplayoffs. And when the playoffs get here we have to bethe best team we can be. I don’t know if that will hap-pen but I do know that when it is game time our kidsalways compete.
“We aren’t going to lay on the ‘we are young’ thing. We are going to put the best team on the field with noexcuses.”
Spanish Fort’s players refuse to rest, too. Many ofthem don’t wear their championship rings and lastyear isn’t on their minds heading into fall practiceAug. 2.
“We kind of pushed last year out the back of ourminds,” Toro senior Hunter Wood said. “We practiceand push just as hard to get back there though. Weare working hard and we want to practice and playlike champions every time.”
“I never wear mine,” returning senior linebackerChason Milner said about his championship ring. “Iput it up. It is great to look at but I want to focus ongetting another one.”
Milner is part of a Toro defense that Freeman iscounting on to be good with five returning starters.
“I can’t say enough about where the defense is orhow much they have progressed from being so goodlast year,” Freeman said. The Toro defense was espe-cially good in the playoffs, surrendering just 12 pointsper game while the offense averaged 37 points in thepost season.
“We have the potential to be better this year on de-fense,” senior linebacker Matt Hall said. “I know thatour defense wasn’t the strong point at the beginninglast year, but we got stronger at the end. This year weare going to have to help out our offense until they canget going.”
Spanish Fort will replace two-year starting quar-terback Joel Poe with sophomore Tyler Johnston, whoFreeman looks forward to having in his pass-orientedsystem for three years.
“We feel like we’ll be able to get three really goodyears out of him,” Freeman said. “Tyler has a verystrong arm. The thing about him is that he is a funkid to coach. He is a learner. He is with me every day,and that means he has a tough road because I amsuper hard on my quarterbacks. They have to be ourcoach on the field on Friday nights. That kid is atremendous competitor.”
Johnston will have a reliable receiver back inSammy Harris, Spanish Fort’s top returning passcatcher.
“We aren’t going tomake any excuses
about how young weare or who we lost fromlast year. We are going
to work every day towin the games we are
supposed to win.”
-Spanish Fort headcoach Mark Freeman

“I’m proud of our play-ers,” Campbell said.“They’ve definitely beenputting in the effort, work-ing hard and gettingstronger.”
With only 15 seniors onthis year’s squad, the expe-rience gained by the team’s28 juniors and 24 sopho-
mores can only bode wellfor the future of the GoldenBears. RHS will also fielda freshman squad of 40players this year, Camp-bell said, some of whomwill also gain experienceon the JV and varsityteams.
“We just have to keepworking hard and keepdoing what we’re supposedto be doing,” he said, “and Ibelieve this team will im-prove by leaps and boundsthis year.”

“I think we are going tobe good this year,” Harrissaid. “Tyler has to learnthe offense just like Joeldid. He is doing well in 7-on-7. We took second placein the Tuscaloosa competi-tion. He does more with hisfeet. He’s just a playmaker.I don’t think we’ll havemuch drop off from lastyear.”
Freeman expects goodthings from Harris and theToro receivers.
“Sammy has been herethree years and we havesome other guys who havebeen in the system,” Free-man said. “We expect themto be able to come in andplay. We hope to gain good
experience over the 10weeks of the season and inthe preseason so we can beready for the playoffs.”
The Toros open the sea-son on the road againstClass 6A Daphne, whothey beat in last year’s sea-son opener.
“We don’t hate Daphne,we respect Daphne,” Free-man said. “We respectwhat they’ve done andwhat they are doing. Werespect them as a pro-gram. Head coach Renee Crottsand the Central ChristianSchool Saints volleyball teamhead into the 2013 season witha history of success.
The Saintsended the 2012season with an in-vite to the NACNational tourna-ment after winningtheir regional inthe regular season.
This seasonCrotts and theSaints have abrand new rosterthat sees theSaints bring backonly four playersthat played a yearago.
On the rosterthe Saints have sixsophomores, three juniors, andtwo seniors.
“We are very young; I haveonly four players returning tomy squad this year. It’s a littlebit of a rebuilding year,” Crottssaid. “I have only one seniorthat played on the team a yearago and another senior that didnot play last year.”
Returning senior ShaleyDecker heads up the returningclass for the Saints, along withJuniors Becky Shelton, andCheyenne Adams. SophomoreTeresa Sullivan is the lonesophomore returning to the ros-
ter. With a lot of new faces join-
ing the varsity ranks for theSaints, Crotts will lean on theveterans to set the tone alongwith a good example.
“All four of those girls aresuch good leaders on and off thecourt. So it’s going to be a littleeasier just because they canhelp bring up the girls in a lot of
ways like court ma-turity,” Crotts said.“I have a lot of girlsthat played juniorvarsity last yearthat have to jump tovarsity this season. The girls just needto learn a more ad-vanced game thanthe one they playedin JV.”
One of the newplayers Crotts willbe counting on isnew setter NikkiGibbs who haschanged positionsheading into the up-coming season.
“She is learning a new posi-tion but she is doing a great jobat it. I am just really pleasedwith her work ethic and her de-sire to get better.” Coach Crottssaid. “I was concerned withthat; this is the first year wehaven’t had a setter lined upand ready to go.”
Even with a big turnover inthe roster, the game plan thathas led to great success for theSaints will remain intact head-ing into 2013.
“The tried and true workspretty well. I’m not trying to do
anything fancy with them,”Crotts said. “I am just trying toget them to understand the ba-sics and to learn the fundamen-tals. They have to really learn topass the ball. The girls thatplayed JV last year have to getused to a different offensivestructure as well as seeing a dif-ferent level of competition.”

The Bayside Lady Ad-mirals officially begantheir run for a 12th con-secutive volleyball statechampionship earlier thismonth.
After losing her twinpeak pair of net dominat-ing all-state playersGabby Deshotel and Vir-ginia Pittman to gradua-tion, Head coach AnnSchilling hopes to rely onfive returning seniors tofill those six-footer-plusshoes as well as helpbreak in some youngerplayers this season.
“We’re excited. Ourgoal is to just get bettereveryday and the kids areworking hard. Work hardon the little things know-ing that the little thingsare really the big thingsdown the road,” Schillingsaid.
With five seniors,Jhalen Caffey, SydneyChandler, Morgan Du-laney, Madison Matthewsand Harper Morrison itwon’t exactly be a rebuild-ing year, but a differentlooking team using theirown skill sets that willhave to find itself.
“Our ball handling islooking okay so defen-sively we think we can be
pretty good and that’s al-ways a must every yearand we have pretty gooddepth and experience onthe defensive side. That’sexciting. On offense, wehave experience withmore seniors than we’vehad in a while, but we’ll bedifferent up front withGabby and Virginia grad-uating this past spring. We’ll miss their power andscoring and blocking. Butwe will have to be more
balanced overall becausewe won’t stop as manyballs at the net. But weare aggressive and can hitand of course we have thebest setter in the state inSydney Chandler.”
Chandler started as aseventh grader and islooking to add a sixthchampionship ring to hercollection. She was alsothe divisional state MVPas a sophomore and amulti-all-state selection.
“If we can pass well,Syd can take it fromthere,” Schilling said. “Wehave those five seniorsand then several youngerones with just a few in be-tween, so we will be mov-ing some people aroundand making some deci-sions the next few weeksbefore we’re in a set rota-tion. And that usuallyneeds a little adjusting. But sure serving shouldbe pretty good again but
you can always improveand that’s another impor-tant fundamental we’llwork on.”
One of the rising tal-ents for Schilling is Lau-ren Chastang who playeda lot of big-match minutesincluding the playoffs andthe Elite Eight state tour-nament. But the incomingfreshman hitter/blockerinjured her ankle and maymiss or play a limited rolein the team’s opener
against Schilling’s almamater 6A McGill-ToolenCatholic.
“That’s always a funway to start the season forboth of us,” she said. “Agood rivalry is always ex-citing, too. But Laurenhurt her ankle and shemight play but we won’trisk aggravating it.”

Bayshore ChristianVolleyball head coach DaveOmtvedt isn’t just startinga new season, he’s initiat-ing a program along withother sports as the Eaglesmake their debut into thePanhandle Christian Con-ference.
“With so much youthand kids who never playedwe’re focusing a lot on coreelements and fundamen-tals, some have played butnot in an organized set-ting. So we have our workcut out for us. We’ll bedoing a lot of serve-receivepractice and of coursepassing work. If we canpass to the setter andserve the ball consistently,we can win.”
He and his wife Sarah, who will assist in coachingthe team, have four chil-dren, two of whom will beon the Eagles volleyballteam.
Omtvedt’s preseasonbreakdown:
• passing: “We aremaking very good progressin passing,” he said givingan example. “Day one wedid a passing drill wherebyI hit balls under hand tothe girls on the other sideof the net. It took usroughly 130 balls to get 50to target. Today it took us75 balls to get 50. This isvery good progress, how-ever these are very easypasses.”
• Offense, defense:“The girls are learning theoffensive lineups and de-fensive positioning. Thereare six different line upswith four different transi-tions in each line up. Westill have a lot of work todo. When we get into thegame they will need toknow their positions andbe able to get to their posi-tions quickly and underpressure.“
• Serving: “Serving isprobably my biggest con-cern,” Omtvedt said. “Wecan’t win if we can’t serve. We are getting better butneed to keep working hardon it. I am teaching someof the girls underhandserves so I can be confidentwe will get our serves overduring our first game. Italso helps their confidenceduring the game to maketheir serve. We continue towork on overhand serveand my goal is to have allof them serving overhandby the end of the season. We are working on servestwo, three times per prac-tice.”
• Overall: The girlshave been very fun to workwith and are workinghard. I think I am pushingthem harder than they ex-pected, however all thishard work will pay hugedividends toward the endof the season. I know thegirls are eager to playmore in practice howeverwe need to get the funda-mentals down first.”

The Lady Toros madeit to the Elite Eight 5Astate volleyball tourna-ment last year which is al-ways the biggest show inhigh school sports as wellas a good indicator of pro-gram strength. But Span-ish Fort head coachBarclay Kercher had sixplayers graduate from the2012 team—effectively anentire squad.
But fortunately, manyof the younger Toros got alot of time in the rotationlast season and Kercherlikes what she sees head-ing into the 2013 run.
“We have had a prettysuccessful transition fromlast year’s Elite Eightteam,” she said. “Every-body is working hard toget a spot and getting bet-ter and forcing others toget better in the process.Showing a good work ethicand that is always whathas to take place. Ofcourse, key to getting backto state is really playingtogether as a team, limit-ing drama, respectingteammates, producingthat special chemistry thatall really good teams have.Hard to know exactlywhat the recipe is fromyear to year because somany variables changefrom year to year, but as acoach you know it whenyou have it. But you al-ways have to work for it.”
The Toros will alsomiss Rebecca Morehousewho transferred out ofstate. So coming up with aset line up to get ready foranother run at the areatitle and beyond will in-volve some intra-squadcompetition, Kercher said.“We have some new faceswith us. We graduated six, have one senior this year,Gabby Horst, who will be agood leader for us.”
The team also has bigshoes to fill in AmberTreace, the four-year start-ing setter who signed withUAB.
“Replacing Amber
Treace will be tough, butwe will go with who canstep up and do the job. Wehave some who look goodat setter already, but we’llsee how it goes. Right nowjust seeing which playerscan make it happen, par-ticularly at setter. We arecoming down to the wire.”
Some underclassmenreturning with experienceinclude Anna Claire Wha-ley who will may be play-ing a new position and theyounger sister of AmberTreace, Ashley Treace andothers who are all compet-ing for major playing time.
“Defensively we’ll bestrong, have a lot of depthwith players who willnever come off the court.Of course with Shannon(Paaymans-senior liberolast year) gone, I’m waitingto declare a starting libero, too. Having a strong mid-dle as we expect will befun and along with theleadership of Gabby, weshould be okay. Also, wehave an outstanding JVteam coming up as well. Sothe future looks bright forSpanish Fort volleyball.”
Kercher sees the usual
suspects (5A Areas 1 and 2and region competition)making life tough for hersquad in the battle forpost-season berths.
“St. Paul’s is always apowerhouse in the region,I have not seen GulfShores this year but theyalways compete hard,Faith always has a win-ning program so GulfShores and us should bat-tle it out in the area (5AArea 2), then the region isstrong again with the Mo-bile teams (5A Area 1).
In order to stay com-petitive, Kercher saidplayers have to keep train-ing almost year round. “It’sbeen that way for a whilewith the club team systemand schedule and so manyathletes on individualtraining schedules, too. Idon’t see it ever goingback. Kids look forward toschool starting just to get abreak from all the workouts.
But we all benefit bynot having to spend asmuch time on traditionalconditioning. They’re al-ready in shape,” she said.
Spanish Fort opens at
St. Lukes Aug. 29. TheToros will host their an-nual Battle of the Forttournament beginningSept. 20.

The Lady Trojans re-load for 2013 with threeexperienced seniors inSarah Chapman, JordanFilotei and Hope Fultonfor head coach Edoli Her-rion who starts her fourthseason at her own highschool alma mater.
Filotei brings signifi-cant experience to thelibero position and hasverbally committed to playfor the University ofArkansas at Monticellonext year.
Graduation took its tollon the DHS starting rota-tion of 2012, Herrion saidwith seven players: TaylorBarnette, Katherine Barr,Julia Cleveland, TaylorPitt,Anna Ramsey, AudreyWalding and TaylorWright—all of whom sawconsiderable court timelast fall—moving on.
“We have some newplayers stepping in thisyear along with our sen-iors who all had a lot ofvarsity time as juniors. And also two juniors fromlast’s varsity who have re-ally going to be big for us.We also have a couple ofJV players from last yearwho are speeding up theirgame and will be ready toplay varsity level volley-ball this year.
“So, I feel good aboutseason. It’s still early andwe have a way to go, butthey are working hard andlearning the right stuff ata good pace, too. And thatjust means, right now, Ilike our volleyball IQ andwhere we can go from hereonce we really get set in arotation.”
She added that this
group brings a well-rounded balance of offen-sive and defensivestrengths to the court.
“They cover the floorwith a lot of hustle andheart. We have a goodgroup of strong passers
and a strong serving team, our defense needs to catchup a little, experience-wise. But Jordan is our an-chor back there and hasthe leadership factor onthe court that you alwayswant. She sees the court
well, commands respectand communicates realwell. But she’ll need somehelp, too. And fortunatelywe have Sarah who iscoming to us from Murphyand she will help us out alot on defense. She is veryquick and smart on theback row. Hope has goodexperience in the middleand will be a strong leaderfor us there. And so withmy juniors and my seniorsI think we’ll get there soI’m excited. We’ll just keepworking to make progressand try to use ourstrengths to our advan-tage as much as possible.”
Herrion will be joinedby assistant Kevin Frazierwho bring a lot of coachingexperience from Bakerand more recently fromSpanish Fort. “We arelucky to have him,” shesaid. “Kevin brings awhole lot of enthusiasm, excitement and gameknow-how to our benchand the girls are real re-ceptive.”
She will also have as-sistant coach ReynoldsPittman returning for hersophomore season coach-ing at DHS.
Pittman played forBayside Academy underlegendary head coach AnnSchilling and has been asolid instructor for theLady Trojans junior var-sity program.
“Reynolds is keepingme loaded on varsity anddoes a great job with theJV kids,” Herrion said.

Bayshore ChristianSchool in Montrose willbegin it’s first official highschool soccer season thisyear in the PanhandleChristian Conference.
The Eagles coed soccerteam will be coached byLauren Marsh Brown,Brown is a former soccerforward for the Univer-sity of South AlabamaJaguars and a recentgraduate of their sportsmanagement program. She also was an all-state,four-year starter andscoring standout for theFairhope Lady Pirateswhere she recorded 157career varsity goals. Shedid her coaching intern-ship with the Universityof Mobile soccer team andcoached the St. Paul’sEpiscopal High Schooljunior varsity last year.
“I’m looking forwardto working with the kidsand seeing how well wecan do,” Brown said. “Ilove soccer, I still miss(playing) it and I jump inwith them at practicesometimes. Most are juststarting out as far as skilllevel goes. But overall I’mencouraged with the paceof progress so far.
“We do have SarahBreslin who has beenplaying a long time — forher age. And she is, I
would say advanced. She’s really a goal keeperbut wants to play on thefield more so we mayhave to see what else wecan do. And also we havea couple other playerswho are really good, butthen we have quite a fewwho have never evenplayed before. They areathletic, but still learningthe sport and the rules. So we have some work todo on some technique andjust fundamentals of ballhandling and passing andmoving without the ball.”
“Every practice andevery week, I’ve seenthem meeting most of thegoals I’ve set. But I’ll keepsetting new and moregoals and challengingthem. I think with experi-
ence we can be prettygood, but they are allfairly young in age (sev-enth to 10th grade withone sixth grader) and afew are completely new tosports in general, so Ican’t ask too much, toofast.”
Brown, who is used toa high level of play andsuccess in terma of win-ning said she also feelsgood about the stages ofprogress her players areachieving.
“The main thing Ihave been impressed withis seeing some of them re-alize they can do morethan they thought theycould after just workingand focusing on a skill. That’s rewarding to seehappen right in front of
you and I like seeingthem realize that’s it funto play and worth the ef-fort. But there’s more to itthan just playing and Ilike doing drills to helpwith skills, but most peo-ple don’t. So my husband(T. J. Brown) and I havebeen trying to come upwith ways to keep theminterested but still learn-ing and developing at thesame time.”
The Eagles will com-pete with 14 other Chris-tian Schools from thestates of Alabama,Florida, Georgia and Mis-sissippi now making upthe PCC. Bayshore’s nextsoccer match is Aug. 30 atAlethia and will hostCentral Christian Sept. 5.
“We’re excited aboutthe kids getting to playfor someone with the levelof knowledge and expert-ise in the sport as Lau-ren.” said Bayshoreathletic director JeffHauge who was a base-ball and golf coach atFairhope when Brownwas a student athletethere. “We also feel fortu-nate to have someonewith such outstandingcharacter. She brings allthat to our school here. She was a great playerand is a great role model.I know she’ll be a greatcoach, too.”
