SSF Game Leader or Instructing Referee

• What's the difference??• Game Leaders look after the Under 6 and

Under 7 age groups.• Instructing Referees look after the Under

8, Under 9, Under 10 and Under 11 age groups.

• The roles of SSF Game Leaders and SSF Instructing Referees differ slightly.

Your role as an SSF Game Leader

• The most important thing is to – KEEP THE GAME MOVING!!

• Try to limit stoppages in play.• Help players with the restart of play to

ensure the game is moving freely.• Ensure the opposing team is back to the

halfway line for all goal line restarts.• Facilitate an environment where the kids will

have FUN!!

Your role as an SSF Instructing Referee

• The main role of the instructing referee is to control the game and make sure it runs freely.

• SSF Instructing referees aim to instruct and correct the players on how to behave and what the rules are. The referee may instruct the players without stopping the game.

• Discourage players from permanently standing in blatant offside positions.

• Facilitate an environment where the kids will have FUN!!

Under 6 & 7 Rules

• The ball – Size 3

• Number of players – 4 v 4. A maximum of 4 players on the field from each team at any time. Players may be interchanged at any time.

• No goalkeepers.• No offside.• Game Duration – 2 x 15 minute halves. (MAX

5 min half time break).

Under 6 & 7 Rules

• Start of play & Restart after a goal – A pass forward to a team mate from the middle of the half way line. All players must be in their own half of the field of play. Opponents must be at least 5m. from the ball until it is in play. The ball must be touched by a team mate before a goal can be scored.

• Restart after ball goes out over touchline, (sidelines).

No throw-in but a kick in from behind the side-line. Use a ready, set, go! countdown to ensure quick play – defenders must be at least 5 metres away from the ball.

Restart after the ball crosses the goal line, (back line):

There is no corner kick. Regardless of which team touched the ball last, a player from the team whose goal line the ball has crossed will place the ball anywhere along the goal line, except in the goal mouth, and pass or dribble the ball into play. Opponents must retreat to the halfway line and can move once the ball is in play. The ball must touch a team mate before a goal can be scored.

• Ball in and out of play – The ball is out of play when it has wholly crossed the goal line, (back line), or the touch line, (side line), whether on the ground or in the air or, when play has been stopped by the game leader.

• All free kicks in Under 6 & Under 7 are indirect free kicks – there are no penalties or direct free kicks.

• An Indirect free kick is where a goal can be scored only if the ball touches another player before it enters the goal.

• If the ball is kicked directly into the goal without having first touched another player it is a no goal. The restart is the same as if the ball had crossed anywhere else along the goal line.

A free kick awarded to the attacking team is taken from the spot but not closer than 5m from the goal.

A free kick awarded to the defending team is taken from the spot but not closer than 5m from the goal line.

Try to limit giving free kicks. Most acts of handball or fouls and misconduct at this level are caused by a lack of coordination, with no intent. In this case try and give the advantage to the attacking team and continue play. If you decide a deliberate or serious act of handball, foul or misconduct has occurred, explain to the child they have done the wrong thing and that they should not do this again.

Please consider that if a child picks up the ball during play, with the playing fields being so close, they may have thought that the whistle they heard was on their field. Do not suggest this to the child but simply ask them why they picked up the ball. If you are satisfied that it was not deliberate then restart play with a drop ball.

• How many players per team?• Answer: 4.• Are there goalkeepers in Under 6 & Under 7?• Answer: No.• Is there offside in Under 6 & Under 7?• Answer: No.• Do they take throw ins in Under 6 & Under 7?• Answer: No.• How far away must defenders stand if they have given away a free kick?• Answer: 5metres.

• How long are the halves in Under 6’s?• Answer: 15 minutes.• Are there any direct free kicks or penalty kicks in Under 6’s &

Under 7’s?• Answer: No.• A team has just scored a goal. Where is the restart of play taken

from?• Answer: From the middle of the halfway line.• Seagulls just scored a goal against the Ridgebacks. Where do the

Seagull players stand for the restart of play?• Answer: At least 5m away from the ball until it is in play.

Under 7 Test

• What is the maximum number of players on the field for each team in an Under 7 game?

• Answer: 4 players.• How long are the halves?• Answer: 15 minutes.

Under 8 and 8 9 9 Rules

• The Ball – Size 3• Number of players – 7 v 7 - Including

goalkeeper. A maximum of 7 players on the field from each team at any time. Players may be interchanged at any time.

• Size of Field – 40m x 30m.• Game Duration – 2 x 20 min. halves. (MAX 5

min. half time break).• Offside - There is no offside.

• Start of Play & Restart after a Goal - A kick forward to a team mate from the middle of the halfway line. All players must be in their own half of the field of play. The opposition must be at least 5m away from the ball.

• Note: If a player kicks the ball directly into the goal without a team mate touching the ball, it is a no goal. If it deflects off a defender and goes into the goal, it is a goal.

• If the ball is kicked directly into the goal from a kick off, restart with a goal kick taken from anywhere within the penalty area.

• Ball crossing the touchline, (sideline) - The game is restarted with a throw-in awarded to the opposition. Player faces the field of play, part of each foot on or behind the line, using both hands delivers the ball from behind and over their head. For any infringement, the throw-in is awarded to the opposition.

• The thrower may not touch the ball again until it has been touched by another player. For this offence an indirect free kick is awarded against the thrower.

• Ball crossing the goal line, (back line) after having last touched a defender. The game is restarted with a corner kick taken by the attacking team. The kick may be taken from up to 1m from the corner flag post, either along the back line or sideline.

• Ball crossing the goal line, (back line) after having last touched an attacker. The game is restarted with a goal kick to be taken from anywhere inside the penalty area.

• Goalkeepers – Goalkeepers are allowed to handle the ball anywhere within the goal area.

• Once the goal keeper has control of the ball all players, with the exception of the goalkeeper, must leave the goal area.

• No player may challenge the goalkeeper when they are in possession of the ball in the goal area.

• Pass backs. If a player intentionally passes the ball back to the goalkeeper it is an INDIRECT PENALTY from where the pass occurred

• The goalkeeper must release the ball using one of the following methods, within 6 seconds:

a) Roll or throw. b) Play with the feet after placing

the ball on the ground.

• Fouls & Misconduct – Indirect free kicks are awarded for all acts of fouls and misconduct committed on the field of play outside the penalty area.

• For deliberate acts of hand ball or serious fouls and misconduct in the penalty area a penalty kick is awarded. To be taken from an 8m penalty mark with only the goalkeeper in position. All other players must be outside the penalty area and at least 5m behind the penalty mark.

• Fouls and Misconduct are:• Kicks or attempts to kick and opponent.• Trips or attempts to trip an opponent.• Jumps at an opponent.• Charges an opponent.• Strikes or attempts to strike an opponent.• Pushes an opponent.• Tackles an opponent to gain possession of the ball,

making contact with the opponent before touching the ball.

• Holds an opponent.• Spits at an opponent.• Handles the ball deliberately ( except for the goalkeeper

within his own penalty area).

Under 8 & 9 Test

• How many players per Under 8 & 9 team?• Answer: 7.• Are there goalkeepers?• Answer: Yes.• If a goalkeeper has the ball, how can he

distribute the ball to his team?• Answer: a) Roll or Throw. b) Play with

the feet after placing the ball on the ground.

• Are Under 8 & 9 games played on the same size field as the younger age groups?

• Answer: No – The fields are bigger.• How long are the halves for Under 8’s & 9’s?• Answer: 20 mins per half.• Do these age groups take throw ins?• Answer: Yes.• Is there any offside in Under 8 & 9 games?• Answer: No.

Under 10 & 11 Rules

• The same as Under 8’s & Under 9’s except for the following:

• The Ball – Size 4• Number of players – 9 v 9 - Including goalkeeper. A

maximum of 9 players on the field from each team at any time. Players may be interchanged at any time.

• Size of Field – 60m x 40m.• Game Duration – 2 x 25 min. halves (MAX 7.5 min. half

time break).

Under 10 & 11 Test

• How many players per Under 10 & 11 game?• Answer: 9• Is the field of play the same as Under 8 & 9?• Answer: No, they are bigger.• How long are the halves for Under 10’s &

11’s?• Answer: 25 minutes.

Whistles and Watches

• You will be issued with a whistle at the start of the season. You will have a referees box at the ground.

• We have a sponsor who will be issuing you a shirt that MUST be worn on match day.

• It is your responsibility to bring it every week to games. We control game times by a hooter but a watch is handy if you are doing an older team .

• You are welcome to purchase your own whistle if you wish.

SSF Fields

• Fields will be known coded according to a letter.

Website Allocations

• Again this year, your refereeing allocations will be e-mailed to you via Mark W.

• It is your responsibility to check if you are refereeing – you will be emailed.

• If you cannot make it to your games you must contact Mark W ASAP.

• I will do my best to ensure everyone gets a fair amount of games – however, some referees playing commitments clash more than others, which means you may not get as many games.

Referee Pay

A drink from the canteen – all our SSF referees get paid.

Pay rates are as follows• Under 6 - $6 per game• Under 7 - $6 per game• Under 8 - $8 per game• Under 9 - $8 per game• Under 10 - $11 per game• Under 11 - $11 per game

And finally…………

• It is not unusual for referees, young and old, to feel nervous when they go onto the field. One of the best ways to reduce the nerves and build your confidence is to read and understand all the rules. And when you know them all, read them again. Remember! To play a game we must have a referee.

• But preferably one that is not so nervous and stays a bit longer.• Please remember. We are only human and you will make

mistakes, we all do. If you realise you have made a mistake during a game and play has not restarted, you may change your decision. Referees at all levels are allowed to do this.

• If you have any questions or problems during a game come and see me at half time or at the end of the game. If I can’t give you an answer straight away, I will find out and get back to you. At anytime throughout the year please don’t hesitate to contact me regarding any refereeing issue you may have.

What Now ?

I will be at the clubhouse on Monday 25th March 4:30 -5:30Tuesday 26th March 4:30 – 5:30

Every SSF referee will have to attend the clubhouse on either of those dates to complete a written exam. Questions will come from this powerpoint.

Everyone needs to attend even those that have refereed previously.
