The most successfulhead coach in CalPoly softball program

history, three-time Big WestConference Coach of theYear selection Jenny Condonenters her ninth season in2013. Condon, who directedCal Poly to Big West titlesand NCAA Tournamentappearances in 2007 and2009, enters the 2013 sea-son with a .534 (213-186)overall winning percentageand a .580 (94-68) winningpercentage in Big West con-tests.

The Big West’s represen-tative to the NFCA Division IHead Coaches Committee,Condon became the 11th BigWest coach to earn 200 vic-tories at a member institutionas Cal Poly capped the 2011season with a 6-5 victoryagainst conference champi-on Pacific. Under Condon,Cal Poly has finished in thetop half of the Big Weststandings during six of theprevious eight seasons.

Individually, Condon hashelped produce 33 All-BigWest selections at Cal Poly, six NFCA All-West Regionselections and one All-America selection.

Despite the program’s 23-24 overall finish in 2010, CalPoly’s 12-9 Big West markkept the Mustangs within thetop-three programs in theconference standings for the

sixth-successive season.Led by designated playerAnna Cahn’s selection as BigWest Field Player of theYear, five Mustangs earnedall-conference praise in2010.

The 2009 season provedto be the finest effort in CalPoly’s 19-year Division Itenure as the Mustangsestablished single-seasonprogram records for overallwinning percentage (.774),conference winning percent-age (.857), conference victo-ries (18), fewest conferencedefeats (three) and fewestoverall defeats (12) en routeto capturing a second BigWest title and a berth in theNCAA Tournament. TheMustangs, who also madeprogram history by rising ashigh as No. 21 in the USAToday/NFCA poll, producedtheir first NCAA Tournamentvictories at the Division Ilevel and reached the cham-pionship round of theStanford regional. BehindCahn’s Big West Pitcher ofthe Year honor, a program-record nine Mustangs gar-nered all-conference praise.

Setting the table for anhistoric 2009 campaign wasa solid 2008 effort as theMustangs finished 24-22overall and in third place inthe Big West standings witha 12-9 mark. In betweenopening the season with a 5-1 victory against eventualWomen’s College WorldSeries runner-up Texas A&Mand winning six of their finaleight contests, Cal Poly post-ed eight victories against

programs that qualified forthe previous season’s NCAATournament and defendedBob Janssen Field with a 14-3 (.824) home mark. All-BigWest first team selectionMelissa Pura headlined agroup of seven totalMustangs who garnered all-conference praise.

Prior to the 2009 cam-paign, Cal Poly’s 2007 sea-son ranked as the most-notable year in program his-tory. Aside from capturing theprogram’s first Big West titleand securing its first NCAATournament berth at theDivision I level, Cal Polyestablished then-single-sea-son records for total victories(39) and overall (.696) andconference (.778) winningpercentage. After dealingdefeats to No. 12Washington, No. 6Northwestern and No. 9Stanford, Cal Poly openedBig West play with eight-straight victories. TheMustangs, who led the con-ference race wire-to-wire,closed the regular season bywinning five of their final sixgames and a 3-2 victoryagainst Pacific on May 11 notonly secured the Big Westcrown, but also providedCondon her 100th career vic-tory. Headlined by Big WestPlayer of the Year selectionLisa Modglin – who also dou-bled as Cal Poly’s first NFCAAll-America pick in nineyears – Cal Poly placed eightMustangs on the 2007 all-conference team.

A standout player in thecollegiate and international

arenas, Condon’s influenceat Cal Poly was felt instantlyas her inaugural 2005 squadposted a 35-16 mark. TheMustangs went 15-6 in BigWest play and the second-place finish was, at the time, the best showing in programhistory. Cal Poly’s 27-23record in 2006 was backedby an 11-7 Big West markthat guaranteed a third-placefinish. The record solidifiedthe program’s first back-to-back winning campaignssince the 1996 (23-19) and1997 (37-17) seasons.Condon’s sides have beenespecially adept in defendingBob Janssen Field, havingracked up an 84-63 (.571)home record under her guid-ance. Included in that mark isa program-record 19-gamehome winning streak fromMay 9 2008 to May 2, 2009.

Condon began her coach-ing career at UNLV in 1994,assisting the Rebels to athird-place finish at the 1995WCWS. Former CanadianOlympian, Oregonstandout and Junior

College Player of the Yearselection Ani Nyhus is in herseventh season as an assistanton Jenny Condon’s staff and asCal Poly’s pitching coach.

Despite uncharacteristic dipsin form in 2011 and 2012, the2010 campaign proved anotherproductive season for CalPoly’s rotation with theMustangs leading all Big West

staffs in ERA (3.09) and suffer-ing the second-fewest losses ofany squad (24).

The 2009 Mustangs, howev-er, produced the finest in-circleeffort in program history.Highlighted by lefthander AnnaCahn, named Big West Pitcherof the Year and to the NFCAAll-West Region team after settingprogram single-season recordsfor victories (28-7) and inningsworked (232.2), Cal Poly’s2009 rotation led all conferenceprograms in ERA(1.72), oppos-ing batting average (.225), wins(41) and fewest losses (12).The Mustangs also allowed just62 walks and 117 total runs in374.1 innings.

Nyhus’ influence upon theMustang pitching staff was felt

immediately during her initial2007 season, as Cal Poly low-ered its team ERA 82 pointsfrom the previous season andstruck out 82 more hitters. As aresult, three of Cal Poly’s fourpitchers garnered All-Big Westpraise. In 2008, Cal Poly’s 2.63team ERA and .246 opposingbatting average each ranked asthe second-lowest figuresamong Big West rotations.Accordingly, the Mustangsyielded conference lows for hits(296), doubles (41), homers(21) and walks (83).

Under Nyhus, Cal Poly pitch-ers have earned six total All-BigWest first and second teamhonors.

As a collegian at Oregon,Nyhus earned NFCA All-

America third team and All-Pac-10 Conference first team honorsin 2004 after posting a 25-12record and a 1.54 ERA. The wintotal remains the second high-est in Oregon single-seasonhistory and Nyhus added 202strikeouts to her resume for theDucks, who reached the cham-pionship game of the FloridaState Regional. Nyhus, whostruck out a program-record 16Utah State hitters en route to a2004 no-hitter, earned all 10 ofOregon’s Pac-10 victories andshut out six ranked opponents. Her 1.67 career ERA remainsthe seventh-best mark in pro-gram history.

Nyhus began her collegiatecareer at Central ArizonaCollege. As a sophomore,

Nyhus struck out 378 battersand posted 40 victories to earnJunior College Player of theYear, All-America, all-region andAll-Arizona Community CollegeAthletic Association honors asthe Vaqueros finished 70-4 andcaptured the National JuniorCollege Athletic Associationchampionship. Nyhus collected34 victories as a freshman in2002 as the Vaqueros went 63-2. Along with her single-seasonbests, Nyhus owns CAC careerrecords for total victories (74)and strikeouts (627).

A native of Prince George,British Columbia, Nyhuspitched for the CanadianNational Team that went 3-4 atthe 2004 Athens SummerOlympics.

With two decades ofcollegiate coachingexperience to draw

upon, Gina Vecchione is in herfirst season as the associatehead coach with the Cal Polysoftball program.

Vecchione, who works pri-marily with Cal Poly's hittersand outfielders and coachesfirst base, arrived on the cen-tral coast after serving as anassistant for 13 seasons at

UCLA (2000-12). WithVecchione on staff, the Bruinscaptured Women's CollegeWorld Series championshipsin 2003, 2004 and 2010.Vecchione helped the 2010UCLA championship squadset school records for homeruns (108), slugging percent-age (.602), on-base percent-age (.432) and walks (244).

The Bruins, who appearedin the Women’s College WorldSeries championship game orseries six times duringVecchione’s tenure, also cap-tured conference titles in 2002,2006 and 2009. WithVecchione in the dugout, theBruins produced a 609-160-1(.791) record with UCLA’s staff

earning NFCA Division INational Coaching Staff of theYear praise in 2004 and 2010.

“Gina’s resume speaks foritself. She’s excelled as a play-er and coach at every level inour sport and her experienceof playing and coaching withnational championship pro-grams is invaluable to our play-ers,” said Mustang head coachJenny Condon, who served asan assistant coach alongsideVecchione at Oregon Stateduring the 1998 and 1999 sea-sons.

A three-time All-PacificRegion selection as a UCLAoutfielder (1980-82),Vecchione is one of only fourBruins to have a number

retired (2). After helping UCLAto the first NCAA champi-onship as a senior in 1982,Vecchione was named to theAll-Women’s College WorldSeries team and as an All-American. As a junior in 1981,Vecchione led UCLA in dou-bles (10) and RBI (21).
