In eight years as Cal Polymen’s soccer head coach,Paul Holocher has trans-

formed the Mustangs into aprogram recognized nationallyfor both a winning tradition andinnovative style of play. Duringhis 14 overall seasons as ahead coach, Holocher hascompiled a 171-75-30 recordand led his programs to six totalNCAA Tournament appear-ances. Included in that run is anNCAA Division III Tournamentchampionship game showingwith UC Santa Cruz in 2004and an NCAA Division ITournament appearance withCal Poly during the 2008 sea-son – the Mustang program’sfirst postseason showing in 13years.

The 2012 season proved tobe another banner year for theMustangs under Holocher withCal Poly matching programrecords for overall victories (11)and conference victories (six)en route to reaching the BigWest Tournament semifinals forthe fourth time in five seasons.Led by forward MackenziePridham – who became the firstBig West Offensive Player ofthe Year selection in school his-tory – the 2012 Mustang squadmatched another programrecord by placing six Mustangson the all-conference team.

During six seasons insideAlex G. Spanos Stadium,Holocher has directed Cal Polyto a 36-13-8 home record andhelped create one of the mostloyal and passionate fan basesin the nation. Under Holocher’s

leadership, Cal Poly has fin-ished among the top-10Division I attendance leadersduring each of the previous sixyears. During the 2012 seasonalone, the Mustangs averaged2,709 fans per home match.

“One of my main goals whenI came to Cal Poly was to cre-ate an exciting and fun atmos-phere for our community andyouth to come and enjoy greatcollege soccer,” Holocher said.“I feel we have some of the bestcollege soccer fans in the coun-try, both within our student bodyand the community, and the fanbase is growing in passioneach year. There are a lot ofyoung families and more than7,000 youth players on the cen-tral coast. We want each andevery one of those young fansand families to know about CalPoly soccer and for us tobecome a positive experiencewithin their growth in thegame.”

Several of the highest-attended matches in NCAAhis-tory have occurred underHolocher at Spanos Stadium, including two nationally tele-vised broadcasts on FoxSoccer Channel against centralcoast rival UC Santa Barbara. The series versus UC SantaBarbara, which includes threesellouts at Spanos Stadium ofmore than 11,000 fans, hasbecome the best-attended andmost hotly contested rivalry incollege soccer. Overall, 11 ofthe top 27 best-attendedgames in NCAA regular sea-son history include matchesfeaturing Cal Poly with eachcontest occurring sinceHolocher arrived in 2006.

“The Big West is a fantasticconference with some greatrivalries that are being devel-

oped,” Holocher said. “We alsowant to continually play thebest teams in the nation out-side of our conference, chal-lenge ourselves and creategreat competitive memories forthe young men in our programand for our fans.”

As an attacking midfielder incollege, Holocher helped SantaClara to a 1989 NCAATournament championship anda 20-0-3 record under SteveSampson and Mitch Murray.Holocher ended his career withselection to the NSCAA All-America team and was a recip-ient of the Vincent Corsigliaacademic award for high-achieving student-athletes atSanta Clara. His 28 collegiategoals and 32 assists remain thesecond-highest career marks inSanta Clara history. He wasinducted into the Santa ClaraAthletics Hall of Fame in 2005.

Following his time at SantaClara, Holocher helped the SanFrancisco Blackhawks to the1991 American ProfessionalSoccer League title before sign-ing with FC Admira Wacker ofthe Austrian Bundesliga. At 26,Holocher – who also earnedone cap with the United StatesMen’s National Team in 1995 –was the 48th overall pick duringthe inaugural Major LeagueSoccer Draft by San JoseClash. Holocher, who alsoplayed for Chicago Fire, retiredfrom professional soccer in1999 to take his first headcoaching position at UC SantaCruz.

Holocher quickly trans-formed UC Santa Cruz into anational power, compiling a109-24-7 record in seven yearsand putting the program onevictory away from the 2004national championship. Four

players from his UC SantaCruz program went on to playin MLS and several are nowcoaching in college soccer pro-grams along the west coast, including San Francisco (DanChamberlain), Menlo College(Eric Bucherre) and UC SantaCruz (David Frank).

Holocher’s penchant fordeveloping players continuedat Cal Poly with formerMustang captain Anton Peterlinsigning for Everton FootballClub of the English PremierLeague in 2009 (Peterlin wenton to start at Plymouth ArgyleFC, becoming the first Big WestConference player to appear inan English Football Leaguematch). Most recently, EfrainBurgos became the firstMustang taken in the MajorLeague Soccer SuperDraftwhen picked 44th overall byToronto FC in 2011 while goal-keeper Patrick McLain signedwith Chivas USA in 2012.

In seven previous seasonsunder Holocher, Cal Poly hasproduced 34 All-Big Westselections and five NSCAA All-Region honorees.

“We look for young men thatwant to be professionals in thesport and who are ambitious. We know that our goal of play-er development is always ahigh priority,” Holocher added.“We want to develop playersthat have a professionalapproach to how they play andlive. Strong character, coacha-bility and work ethic are keys todevelopment and we look foryoung men that are ready toimprove, compete and grow inthe game each day.”

Cal Poly players have notonly excelled on the field underHolocher’s guidance, but in theclassroom, as well. During the

past seven years, twoMustangs – K.J. Lenehan(2007) and Wes Feighner(2010) – have earned Big WestScholar-Athlete praise while theprogram has enjoyed a further18 selections to the Big WestAll-Academic team. Cal Poly’steam Academic ProgressReport rating, a barometer ofacademic success and gradua-tion rates, has risen drasticallysince Holocher’s arrival.

“It is important for us torecruit young men who are alsomotivated academically. CalPoly features an impressiveacademic education with ahands-on approach to learn-ing,” Holocher said. “Cal Poly’sphilosophy is ‘learn by doing’and we find that students are soengaged in real-life problemsolving that they are ready foranything upon graduation.Being a student-athlete is oneof the best life preparations anyyoung person could hope for. Alove for learning, good time-management skills and team-work are what we want to fosterin our team culture.”

Holocher is the founder anddirector of Catalyst Soccer, anot-for-profit youth player devel-opment program for childrenages 6-12. The club, whichwas founded in 1999 in SantaCruz County, has an impact inyouth player development andyouth coaching developmentthroughout the south bay,Monterey County and centralcoast. Holocher has also beeninvolved with the OlympicDevelopment Program RegionIV team as head coach for the1996 and 1997 boy’s squadswhere he helped identify, devel-op and promote several playersto youth United States NationalTeams.

A standout defender withthe Mustangs (1999-03),Reed has helped oversee astifling defense that hasposted a 1.04 goalsagainst average during hissix combined seasons onthe Cal Poly touchline. That 1.04 goals againstaverage mark includes Cal

Poly’s record-smashing2011 season during whichthe Mustangs establishedprogram bests for fewestgoals conceded (17, in 18games) and fewest goalsallowed per game (0.94)and led the Big West with a0.90 team goals againstaverage. During Reed’s sixyears, Cal Poly hasallowed just 1.09 goals pergame (127 in 116 match-es).

“Brian has a passionatefocus for developing strongdefensive habits and skillsin all of our players. An out-standing central defenderduring his playing days atCal Poly, he takes greatpride in the defensive sideof the game as a coach,”Holocher said. “He works ina specialized way with ourgoalkeepers and backs tohelp them become teamleaders. Brian also helpsteach our team the impor-tant defensive responsibili-ties of each position, regardless of whether itsbeing organized on setpieces or simply becominga tougher and more reli-able player in the criticalmoments that can decide a

match. He does an out-standing job of helpingeach individual improveand become a more com-plete player.”

Charged with overallplayer recruitment, trainingand development, Reedwas a three-year starter,two-year captain and a2003 All-Big West firstteam selection during hisplaying career with CalPoly. Reed’s first coachingstint at Cal Poly culminatedduring the 2008 campaignas the Mustangs postedtheir highest finish in theBig West standings (sec-ond), qualified for theNCAA Tournament for thefirst time in 13 years andproduced the first postsea-son victory at the Division Ilevel – a 1-0 win at UCLA.The Mustangs finishedtheir finest season rankedNo. 23 in the finalNSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll.

Recruited and construct-ed in part by Reed, CalPoly’s 2008 backlineallowed a 0.94 goalsagainst average. EricBranagan-Franco – whorecorded nine clean sheetsfor the second-straight

year and retired with eightCal Poly career records, including save percentage(.805) and shutouts (25) –became the first Mustangto earn Big WestGoalkeeper of the Yearhonors while center backPatrick Sigler was namedCo-Big West Freshman ofthe Year. Both playersearned NSCAA All-FarWest Region praise whileSigler – a future HermannTrophy candidate – wasinvited to train with theUnited States U-20 Men’sNational Team.

The 2007 Mustangsallowed just 1.10 goals pergame en route to settingprogram records for totalBig West points (22), con-ference victories (six),fewest overall losses (four)and fewest conferencelosses (two) and matchingthe mark for overall victo-ries (11). Led by K.J.Lenehan’s first team selec-tion, three Mustang defen-sive players garnered All-Big West praise.

Reed’s influence uponCal Poly’s backline was feltimmediately. A year afterthe program leaked 39

goals in 20 matches, the2006 Mustangs yielded just20 in 19 games. With thedefense tightened, CalPoly posted a fourth-placefinish in the Big Weststandings – a distinctionthat, at the time, matchedthe program’s best showingin the conference stand-ings.

Having helped theMustangs compile the fivelowest goals against aver-ages in program history,Reed-coached Cal Polysides have also produced46 clean sheets. DuringReed’s watch, Mustangdefenders have earned 14total All-Big West honors.

Prior to departing theprogram for the 2009 sea-son, Reed helped producea recruiting class that wasranked No. 33 amongDivision I programs byCollege Soccer News.

Reed spent the 2009-10term working under formerUnited States Men’sNational Team head coachand 2005 Major LeagueSoccer Cup-winning man-ager Steve Sampson withthe GSI Soccer Academy inAgoura Hills, Calif.

SSuuppppoorrttBy any measure or metric, the Cal Poly men’s soc-

Entering the 2013 campaign, the Mustangs haveproduced a 36-13-8 overall mark at the complex and a19-6-5 record against Big West Conference oppo-nents. Additionally, the Mustangs have recorded 22shutout victories at home while Cal Poly’s goalkeepershave kept 26 clean sheets.

Cal Poly has sold out all 11,075 seats at SpanosStadium for matches against central coast rival UCSanta Barbara in 2008, 2011 and 2012 – trio of con-tests that tie for the No. 10 spot on the list of the best-attended regular season matches in NCAA history.
