ONE OF THE NATION’S BESTThe Huskies have been one of the most successful programs in not only the PSAC and the region but the nation over the past decade-plus. Since the beginning of the 2000 season, only four Division II teams have more victories than Bloomsburg’s 129.

PSAC TITLE GAME PICTUREWith a win over West Chester, the Huskies would force a tie atop the PSAC East standings and would win the tiebreaker to host the PSAC Championship Game next week. Should Shippensburg win over Cheyney on Saturday, there would be a three-way tie at the top with all teams at 6-1. In this event, all three would share a 1-1 record against each other, forcing the tiebreaker to move to record against teams in the division – the trio would then all be undefeated against the rest of the East. Shippensburg would then be eliminated via its record in mandated conference games due to its Week 2 loss at Slippery Rock. The tiebreaker scenario would then revert back to the Bloomsburg and West Chester head-to-head record. A West Chester win captures the East Division crown outright for the Golden Rams.

KEEPING THE QB’S JERSEY CLEANIf the numbers are to be believed, Saturday’s game will not be one for defensive players to practice sack dances. West Chester has allowed the fewest sacks of any team in the PSAC this year (five) while Bloomsburg has surrendered just 10 sacks on the season.

ELLIOTT SHINING IN RETURN ROLEOne bright spot from last Thursday’s loss to Shippensburg was the special teams play of true freshman Lawrence Elliott Jr. Elliott flashed his big play ability on multiple returns, including an 86-yard kickoff return in the second half. That return was the longest for the Huskies in over five years – the last time Bloomsburg had a longer kick return came on Oct. 4, 2008 when Jesse Cooper returned a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown, the last time BU returned a kickoff for a score. In all, Elliott had five returns for 183 yards vs. Shippensburg. For the year Elliott is averaging 34.7 yards per kickoff return in 13 tries since taking a larger role in recent weeks. He also has a 17.2 yard average on six punt returns – including a 73-yard score vs. Millersville on Oct. 12. His 581 all-purpose yards rank third on the team.

HALLOWEEN FRIGHTFUL FOR HUSKIESBloomsburg’s Week 9 loss to Shippensburg brought several statistical anomalies for the Huskies – most notably on the ground.

Bloomsburg’s 106 yards of rushing was the first time the Huskies have finished a game with fewer than 200 yards rushing since picking up just 76 at IUP on Sept. 15, 2011. Against Shippensburg, the Huskies rushed 30 times – continuing a streak of 45 straight games with at least 30 rushing attempts, but was the fewest runs for BU since the 27 the Huskies mounted vs. West Chester on Oct. 31, 2009. Further, the Huskies went scoreless into the locker room at halftime for the first time since doing so on Nov. 27, 2010 at Mercyhurst – and their 258 yards of total offense were the fewest for a Huskies team since that same November 2010 game at Mercyhurst.Bloomsburg also saw its streak of 21 straight games with 20 or more points broken. The mark is a school record. The Huskies also had a school record streak of eight straight games with 30 or more points snapped on Halloween Night.

RUNNING TO DAYLIGHTEntering this week’s game at West Chester, Bloomsburg has an on-going streak of 29 straight games with at least one rushing touchdown – the last time the Huskies failed to run for a score came on Sept. 15, 2011 at IUP.

NO RUSHERS TO 100Bloomsburg has not allowed a 100-yard rusher this season. The most yards by a single player on the ground against the Huskies came from the 95 yards Edinboro quarterback Cody Harris rushed for in BU’s Week 2 win. The last player to rush for more than 100 yards against Bloomsburg was Slippery Rock’s Akeem Satterfield who did so on Nov. 10, 2012. The defense will attempt to keep the streak alive against WCU’s Rondell White who has racked up over 100 yards rushing in seven of nine games this year.

HARRIS PICKS UP FIRST SACKRedshirt freshman Andrew Harris continued his impressive debut season by registering his first career sack vs. Shippensburg. The Bethlehem native is second on the team with 55 tackles including five tackles for loss.

AIRING IT OUTThe 32 pass attempts by Tim Kelly last week vs. Shippensburg were not only a career-high, but also the most for the Huskies since Pat Carey put up 37 pass attempts at Mercyhurst on Nov. 13, 2010.

record books this season by setting the conference’s all-time record for most career rushing yards. Quiteh broke the record with an eight-yard carry in the fourth quarter at Edinboro in

Week 2 as part of a 231-yard performance. Quiteh is currently the leading active rusher in all NCAA divisions (FBS, FCS,

II, III) - by a wide margin. His career total is over 1,000 yards more than his closest follower, Melikke Van Alstyne of Division III’s Framingham State (5,721). Quiteh also is the NCAA active leader in rushing yards per game (157.5), all-purpose yards (7,346), rushing touchdowns (81) and total

TDs (85). Quiteh has rushed for over 100 yards in 39 of 44 career games and 24 of the past 26.

MORE RECORDS FALL TO QUITEHFranklyn Quiteh had yet another day for the record books in Week 7 at East Stroudsburg, setting a new school record for rushing yards in a single game with 304. That broke the old record of 300 set by Jerry Marks vs. Mansfield in 1991. He had 28 carries, averaging 10.9 yards per rush and had eight carries of 15 or more yards. It was also his 11th game of over 200 yards rushing. Quiteh set the record wearing jersey No. 8 to honor the memory of friend and Pocono Mountain West high school teammate Jon Mangual who was killed in a 2008 automobile accident and is buried just outside ESU’s Eiler-Martin Stadium.

The performance allowed Quiteh to shatter a national record in the process - it was his 38th game of over 100 yards rushing in his career. Quiteh now has more 100 yard games than any other player in Division II history - the previous record of 37 was held by Danny Woodhead (Chadron St., 2004-07) and Xavier Omon (Northwest Mo. St., 2004-07). He now has 39 career 100-yard rushing games after rushing for 114 yards in Week 8 vs. Cheyney.

In Week 9 vs. Shippensburg, he set the all-time PSAC record for career rushing attempts, entering Saturday’s game with 956. The old record of 943 was held by Gerald Thompson of Edinboro (1995-98).

LARRY THE SACK KINGSenior defensive end Larry Webster has drawn the attention of NFL scouts after transitioning to football last year. A former basketball player who owns the all-time Bloomsburg career record for blocked shots (175) and was the 2011-12 PSAC East Defender of the Year, he has 10.5 sacks for the year. He ranks second in the PSAC behind Shippensburg’s Jake Metz, who has 11 sacks. In Webster’s brief Huskies football career he has 24 sacks in 21 games. Webster has an NFL pedigree - his father, Larry Webster Sr., played 11 years at DE in the NFL, winning a Super Bowl with Baltimore in 2001. Nationally, Webster is tied fourth in sacks - just a half sack behind Metz and St. Augustine’s Shonquez Nelson (11.0).

With his 21-yard field goal at Kutztown on Sept. 21, Danny Fisher broke the all-time conference record for career 3-pointers, connecting on his 51st with the Huskies. The previous mark had been held by Ed Detwiler of ESU for over two decades. Fisher captured the career kicking points record the previous week at Edinboro. He currently leads all Division II active players in field goals and is seventh among active players in all divisions. Among active leaders in total points in Division II, Franklyn Quiteh

leads all players with 512 and Fisher ranks third at 342.

EXCELLENCE UP FRONTBloomsburg prides itself on the strength of its offensive line, and for good reason. The senior trio of Brian Clarke, Matt Feiler and Chris Steck have 112 starts among them in their BU careers while Ryan Geiger and Dakota Hoagland have stepped into starting roles and continued the tradition this fall. As a unit, the starting five now has a combined 130 starts.

RT Dakota Hoagland (6-4, 305 redshirt sophomore)-Started all nine games this year-Saw time in eight games last season

IRONMAN STECKSenior center Chris Steck has turned in a tremendous career anchoring the often dominant Bloomsburg offensive line. The Mt. Carmel product stepped in as a freshman in 2010 and hasn’t missed a beat, starting 45 straight games. The multi-time All-PSAC East as well as 2012 NCAA All-Super Region I selection has been a key player in Bloomsburg’s ability to record 315.8 yards per game on the ground last season and over 313 yards per contest this year and has been in the lineup for all of Franklyn Quiteh’s record-setting career at running back.

GREAT EIGHTWith his fourth straight season of over 1,000 yards rushing, Franklyn Quiteh has joined an elite group of only eight players in NCAA Division II history to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark four times. He joins Joique Bell, Wayne State (MI), 2006-09; Danny Woodhead, Chadron St., 2004-07; Chris Washington, Concord-St. Paul, 2000-03; Damian Beane, Shepherd, 1996-99; Jarrett Anderson, Truman, 1993-96; Jeremy Monroe, Michigan Tech, 1990-93 and Johnny Bailey, Texas A&M-Kingsville, 1986-89 as the only players to accomplish the feat. Bloomsburg alum Jamar Brittingham missed being the ninth player by just nine yards – he rushed for 991 yards as a freshman before surpassing 1,000 yards the next three seasons.

DUO ON SENIOR BOWL WATCH LISTBloomsburg seniors Brian Clarke and Larry Webster have received spots on the 2014 Senior Bowl Watch List. The watch list includes more than 400 student athletes from nearly every level of college football. These are the players who are looking to fill the 110 roster spots that form the North and South squads for the nation’s premier all-star game. Rosters will be announced in January with the game held on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014 in Mobile, Ala., and televised on the NFL Network.

GROUND AND POUNDThe Huskies have had at least 30 rushing attempts in 45 straight games, dating back to Oct. 31, 2009 - a record that nearly was broken last week when Bloomsburg ran exactly 30 times. All of those plays were not designed runs, however, as quarterback Tim Kelly was forced to scramble on multiple designed throws.

WEEK 10 • AT #8 West Chester#BUHUSKIES.COM • #BUHUSKIES

HUSKY-SIZED YARDAGEThe Huskies posted 627 yards of total offense in their win at ESU in Week 7, the second time this season the team has surpassed 600 total yards – also doing so in their 41-13 Week 1 win vs. Stonehill (642). For the year, Bloomsburg averages 473.0 yards per game, good for fifth in the PSAC. The school record for team yardage per game is 484.0 set during in 1996.

RUN THE BALL, STOP THE RUNThe Huskies have become one of the most successful programs in the PSAC thanks in large part to a physical style and ability to control at the point of attack. This has been evident so far through seven games this year as the Huskies have been one of the best teams in the nation at running the ball as well as stopping the run. BU has outrushed its opposition by a 2,824-736 margin on the year and has surrendered only three rushing touchdowns. Bloomsburg ranks fifth in the country in both rushing offense (313.8 yards/game) and rushing defense (81.8 yards/game allowed).

RUN, HUSKIES, RUNBloomsburg has established a new school record, rushing for more than 350 yards in a game five times this year. The Huskies broke the record of four set by the 2004 team in Week 7 when Bloomsburg finished with 389 yards on the ground at East Stroudsburg. BU also rushed for over 350 yards vs. Stonehill (457), Lock Haven (409), Edinboro (383) and Gannon (351). For the season, the Huskies average 313.8 yards per game on the ground. The school record is 315.8 set last year.

HUSKIES IN ELITE COMPANYWith their 52-38 win at East Stroudsburg in Week 7, the Huskies have won seven or more games in 15 consecutive seasons. Only five schools in the divisions of the NCAA have longer streaks: Florida, Florida State and Virginia Tech in the FBS; NW Missouri in Division II; and Mt. Union in Division III. The 15-year streak is also a PSAC record, breaking IUP’s mark of 13 set from 1984-1996.

TURNING RED INTO POINTSWhen in the red zone this season, the Huskies have not squandered scoring opportunities. Through the first eight games of the year, the Huskies rank fourth in the nation in red zone efficiency, scoring in 35 of its 37 trips to the red zone, good for a 94.6 percent success rate. The Huskies have punched into the end zone 27 out of their 37 red zone trips. The only two times BU has not scored in the red zone was while running out the clock at the end of the game vs. Stonehill and at Gannon.

SHIRK STARS IN THE MIDDLEJustin Shirk shifted to middle linebacker for this season and the team tri-captain has excelled in that role. The PSAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week for Week 7 leads the team and ranks fifth in the PSAC with 82 tackles on the year after tying a career-high with 14 tackles vs. Shippensburg. A two-sport star, Shirk won the NCAA Division II national javelin championship in 2012, becoming the first Bloomsburg national champion in men’s track and field in school history.

PATRICK PICKS ANOTHERLast week, Jonathan Patrick picked up his fourth interception of the season with a pick of Shippensburg quarterback Zach Zulli in the first quarter. The four interceptions are a career high for the senior safety and place him in a tie for third in the PSAC along with ESU’s Dean Vitale. Only Edinboro’s Delano Fabor and IUP’s Eric Williams have more INT’s, each tied for the conference lead with five.

PUTTING UP THE POINTSThe Huskies are 106-3 when scoring 40 points all-time following their 52-38 win at East Stroudsburg in Week 7. Bloomsburg has tallied 40 or more points in five of its first eight games this season - the all-time school record is seven games of 40+ points set three times (2005, 2007, 2012).

FISHER ON MITCHELL AWARD HONOREE LISTDanny Fisher was named to the Fred Mitchell Award honoree list for the month of September and October for his work on the field and in the community. Fisher has made good on nine of 11 field goal attempts. Away from the field, he raised over $5,000 for the Angelman Syndrome Foundation through his ‘Kick for a Cure’ initiative.

For each field goal and extra point he kicks this season, he will donate money to the ASF toward raising awareness and work on a cure for Angelman Syndrome, a neuro-genetic disorder with no cure requiring lifelong care for symptoms including developmental delay, lack of speech, seizures and walking and balance disorders. Fisher developed Kick for a Cure to help a close family friend who suffers from the disease. Fisher’s work with ‘Kick for a Cure’ was featured last week on the front page of the CBSSports.com College Football page.

Through nine weeks, Fisher has now raised over $5,700 for the ASF. For more information, visit www.angelman.org.

CONVERTING ON THIRD DOWNBloomsburg has converted 47.6 percent (49 of 103) of its third down situations this year, the best mark in the PSAC and sixth-best in the nation. East Stroudsburg stands second by converting 46.5 percent (60 of 129) of its third downs while West Chester is third at 44.6 percent (50-112).

WORKING QUICKThough Bloomsburg is known for its bruising running attack, the Huskies have been able to score quickly as often as any team in the PSAC this season. So far on the year, Bloomsburg has tallied 54 scoring drives – of those scoring drives, 34 have taken just 2:59 or less including 20 scoring drives of under two minutes.

MAKE YOURSELF AT HOMEThe trip the Huskies made to East Stroudsburg in Week 7 was a homecoming for Franklyn Quiteh who played his high school ball at nearby Pocono Mountain West. Quiteh has felt right at home when playing ESU the past four seasons, racking up 956 career yards in four games vs. the Warriors including his two highest rushing totals – 282 yards last season and 304 yards this year. The all-time record for yards rushing by one player against a single opponent is 1,052 set by Ian Smart by LIU Post vs. Bentley – however that total included five games.

FIRST TRIPS TO PAYDIRTThree Huskies scored their first career touchdowns in the 38-14 victory at Gannon in Week 5. Redshirt sophomore fullback Derek Burkhard made his first career reception one to remember by taking a screen pass 42 yards for the game’s first scoring play. Redshirt freshman tight end Aaron Allison found the end zone in the fourth quarter with a juggling 20-yard touchdown catch. Finally, redshirt freshman running back Joe Parsnik broke off a 34-yard scoring run to finish the scoring – also registering his longest career rush in the process.

PUTTING IN EARLY WORKFranklyn Quiteh put up 114 yards during the first half of the Week 8 win vs Cheyney on the way to and did not return to the game in the second half with a 35-0 lead. The performance put Quiteh over 100 yards rushing before halftime for the 17th time in his career – his best-ever first half showing is his 186-yard first half total in a win at Millersville on Sept. 25, 2010. The all-time PSAC leading rusher also has 11 games of over 200 yards rushing following his school-record day of 304 yards at ESU on Oct. 19.

IT’S OLD HATDanny Fisher has kicked at least one field goal in 30 games, stretching out his own school record. He broke the record with two field goals in the season-opening win vs. Stonehill, breaking the previous mark of 24 set by Jon Koenig from 2006-09. He enters the West Chester game with 55 career 3-pointers.

WAGNER HANDLES THE PUNTINGOne of two true freshmen on the active roster to start the season, Will Wagner has taken over the Huskies’ punt duties. The native of Wernersville has impressed in his first eight games, averaging 37.5 yards per punt in 31 attempts. He booted a new career long of 59 yards at Kutztown, one of four punts of 50-plus yards, and has pinned the opposition inside the 20 13 times.

STARTING OFF RIGHTWith the Huskies win over Lock Haven in Week 4, interim head coach Paul Darragh became the first coach in Bloomsburg history to begin his tenure at the helm of the program with a 4-0 record. Jack Yohe (1952), Thornley Booth (1926) and George Harry (1909) previously started 3-0 but all lost their fourth games.

COLORING RECORD BOOK MAROON & GOLDFranklyn Quiteh has plenty of BU company atop the PSAC rushing list. Now that Quiteh owns the career conference rushing record, the Huskies occupy three out of the top four all-time PSAC rushing spots - Quiteh, Jamar Brittingham (5,689 yards from 2004-07, second) and Irv Singler (5,105 from 1994-97, fourth).

DII’S FINESTDuring preseason, D2Football.com unveiled its top 100 players in all of NCAA Division II. The Huskies were extremely well represented in that poll, placing three players in the top 11 and five in the top 100 – including taking the top spot. Senior running back Franklyn Quiteh earned the honor as the No. 1 player in the poll, being credited for his speed, vision and ability to break tackles. The two-time Harlon Hill finalist was joined by defensive end Larry Webster (No. 9), offensive guard Brian Clarke (No. 11), center Chris Steck (No. 94) and defensive tackle Chris Kennedy (No. 96). When the D2Football.com preseason All-America teams came out in August, the Huskies also had strong representation - Quiteh and Clarke were each first team selections while Steck and Webster landed on the second team.

CALL ‘EM CAPTAINSSeniors Franklyn Quiteh and Chris Steck along with junior Justin Shirk have been named tri-captains for this season. Steck also served as a team captain a season ago.

PSAC PRESEASON POLLBloomsburg was picked second in the Eastern Division in the 2013 PSAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll which was released at PSAC Media Day in August. It marks the eighth straight year BU has been been picked to finish first or second in the division. Shippensburg, last year’s PSAC East champ, took the top spot with six first-place votes while Bloomsburg and third-place West Chester snagged the remaining top tallies. In the West, defending conference champion IUP was a nearly unanimous favorite with seven first-place votes.

BLOOMSBURG FOOTBALL GAME NOTES @BUSPORTSINFO • #BUHUSKIES

FROM THE ARCHIVESBy Bloomsburg University Archivist

Bob Dunkelberger

Bloomsburg’s Halloween appearance last Thursday was the 14th time in school history the football team has played a game on October 31. Its record on that day is now 6-8 since the first one in 1903, 4-4 at home and 2-4 on the road. The only other Hal-loween contest with Shippensburg was in 1936, a 12-0 home loss.

The Huskies all-time record in Thursday games dating back to 1892, their first season of football, is now 13-4. Nine of those games were on Thanksgiving Day, on which the team posted a record of 7-2, with the last one played in 1924.

Bloomsburg has now had its eight-game winning streak to start the year ended for the fourth consecutive time in Game 9, all of which have come in the past five seasons. In 2011 it was a defeat by C.W. Post, and in 2009, 2012 and now 2013 by Ship-pensburg. The first four times in program history the team won its first eight games and played a ninth it was victorious: in 1948, 1985, 2005 and 2008.

The upcoming game with West Chester is the 71st in the series between the two schools, dating back to the first meeting in 1925. Bloomsburg’s record in the previous 70 games is 24-46, 18-18 at home and 6-28 on the road. The Huskies will be look-ing to win back-to-back games at West Chester for only the second time ever. The first was in 1994 and 1996.

Paul Darragh was named interim head coach of Bloomsburg University in February 2013 and overall will be starting his 17th season with the Huskies this year. Darragh has served as the Huskies’ defensive coordinator for the last 16 years. Under Darragh’s leadership the Huskies’ defense has ranked in the top-half of the PSAC in total defense seven of the past 11 seasons, including back-to-back second place finishes in 2000 and 2001 and a second place in 2009. The Huskies have also ranked among the best in the PSAC in run defense finishing first or second five times, including second in two of the last four seasons. The 2009 Huskies finished third nationally in scoring defense (13.36/game), pacing the PSAC. BU also led the conference in sacks, ranking 14th nationally (3.09 per game). In 2010 the Huskies were eighth in Division II in rushing defense (85.38 yards per game). Overall under Darragh’s leadership, the Bloomsburg defense finished in the top-15 in NCAA Division II six times since the 2000 season. Darragh has also coached 51 first team All-PSAC performers, seven All-Americans and two PSAC East Defensive Players of the Year in Anthony Smith (2009) and Mike Va-ranavage (2010). Prior to Bloomsburg, Darragh worked for two years at Indiana (PA) as the linebackers coach. He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Temple from 1987-89. From there, Darragh coached the linebackers at Northeastern and Gannon before being promoted to defensive coordinator at Gannon. He moved from Gannon to the defensive coordinator post at William Paterson College before joining the IUP staff. A three-year starter and captain for Temple, he graduated in 1985 after earning All-East honors as an inside linebacker. Darragh and his wife Yelena live in Orangeville with their children Sasha, Lemuel and Gabriel.
