BE A BISON

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University.

Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics.

Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You be-lieve that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience.

At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics.

Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

WHAT IT MEANS TO

“To me, what it means to be a Bison is giving your heart, mind and body to a school that you are proud of, with friends who are like family. It is desire and love for not only your game, but your team, and your school.”

— Chelsea Brinkman ‘10

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICSSETTING THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to gradua-tion rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

• According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice, and in the most recent survey in the fall of 2012, Bucknell ranked No. 2 in the nation.

• Bucknell has claimed a league-high 131 Patriot League Scholar-Ath-letes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

• A total of 399 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Hon-or Roll in 2012-13 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 509 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during 2012-13.

• In addition to the 124 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 338 Academic All-District honor-ees over the same span, including nine in 2012-13.

• Bucknell has earned 95 Patriot League championships in 23 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 120 conference players of the year, 103 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 570 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

• 26 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2013.

• Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 18 times in the 23-year history of the affiliation, including 14 of the last 16 years.

• Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-Amer-ica selections with 124.

• A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excel-lence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olym-pic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, an Academic All-America wall, a sports med-icine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICSA NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL

Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place.

BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. This program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Buck-nell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy a full range of collegiate experiences.

SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is intro-duced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena.

ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for pro-moting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. Among the programs the Bucknell SAAC has undertaken in recent years are regular volunteer trips to the Lewisburg Food Bank, and involvement with the “Orange and Blue goes Green” sustainability program.

BISON GOOD SPORTS: Now in its seventh year, Bison Good Sports is a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. Bucknell teams have some of the best fan support in the Patriot League, and we encourage all fans to enthusiastically cheer on the Orange & Blue in a positive manner.

Bucknell Athletics Facilities

Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium: The home of Bison soccer.

The Bucknell University Department of Ath-letics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 18 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 23 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 124 Aca-demic All-Americans in 43 years and 131 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 23 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of uphold-ing the scholar-athlete model.

The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success.

The facility, which celebrated its 10th birthday in 2012-13, has enhanced each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and has greatly expanded the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appeal-ing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni.

Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Na-tatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes.

The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell gradu-ate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996.

One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities.

As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its new FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club and brand new Bachman Golf Center; the newly refurbished Depew Field (baseball) and Becker Field (softball); and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

Ben Landis took over as head coach of the Bucknell women’s soccer program in 2005, and the Bison enjoyed the most successful six-year span in program his-tory during his first six years at the helm. Over that span, the Bison captured a Patriot League tournament title in 2005 followed by back-to-back regular-season crowns in 2006 and 2007 and runner-up finishes in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

With a record of 77-68-8 at the helm of the Orange and Blue (36-19-1 in Patriot

League play), Landis helped the Bison surpass the 10-win plateau in each of his first five seasons, marking the first time in program history the squad posted double-digit wins in at least three consecutive seasons. The Bison have also qualified for the Patriot League Tournament six of Landis’ eight seasons.

In 2011, Landis became the winningest coach in Bucknell women’s soccer history.

In his first season back at his alma mater in 2005, Landis guided Bucknell to its second Patriot League championship, one of many successes the Bison achieved under his direction that season. The squad more than doubled scoring production from the year before, and went on to face Penn State in the NCAA Tournament.

In 2006, the Bison reached new heights, tying school records for wins, both overall (12) and in league play (6), and breaking the team’s previous marks for best goals-against average (0.99), winning percentage (.735) and winning and unbeaten streaks after posting seven consecutive victories. The Bison also earned their first Mid-Atlantic regional rankings from both SoccerBuzz and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and posted its first win over a nationally ranked opponent, handing No. 14 Navy, which held a 19-0-0 record at the time, a 2-1 loss in the final game of the regular season to clinch a share of the Patriot League regular season title and earn the right to play host to the league tournament as the No. 1 seed.

In 2007, Landis coached Bucknell to a 5-1-1 league mark, earning the squad the right to host the Patriot League Tournament as the regular season champion. The Bison, who finished as the tournament-runners up, posted an 11-8-1 overall mark, including a convincing 4-1 win over traditional Ivy League power Princeton.

In 2008, Bucknell won 11 more matches and went 5-2 in league play. Landis’ squad broke the school record with eight shutouts and posted a big 3-2 road win over Maryland. He also coached Jennifer Dervarics to her second straight Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year honor.

In 2009, Landis’ squad went 10-8-1 overall and 5-2 in the league, and for the first time in program history the team earned a point against Penn State with a 0-0 draw in front of a large home crowd. Christa Matlack was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year.

Injuries played a major role in ending Bucknell’s run of winning seasons in 2010, but the Bison again posted a 5-2 Patriot League record and qualified for the postseason. And for the fifth year in a row Landis coached a major award winner, as

Matlack repeated as the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year and an NSCAA Scholar All-American.

The third head coach in the 18-year history of the women’s soccer program, Landis, a 1996 graduate of Bucknell started his coaching career at Bucknell as a student assistant coach under Toby Lovec-chio in 1994 and 1995. He continued as an assistant the following fall after graduat-ing with a bachelor of science degree in mathematics with a minor in education.

The Breinigsville, Pa., native returned to his alma mater after two seasons as the head women’s soccer coach at Dart-mouth. Landis led the Big Green to a 16-12-6 record. In 2003, Dartmouth won the Ivy League with a 9-6-2 record and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament. It finished the season ranked third in the Northeast Region by the NSCAA. Prior to taking over as head coach, Landis was an assistant at Dartmouth for three seasons. The Big Green qualified for the NCAA Tournament each year and finished the 2001 campaign ranked 13th in the coun-try. They also finished 16th nationally in 2000 and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament in both 2000 and 2001.

Before his five-year stint at Dart-mouth, and after leaving Bucknell, Landis served as an assistant coach at Lehigh for three seasons while obtaining his master’s degree in business administration.

In addition to his duties as frontman for the Bucknell women’s soccer team, Landis currently serves as camp direc-tor for the Bison Soccer Camp for Girls. A member of the NSCAA since 1996, Landis worked as a marketing intern with the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer in 1997.

Landis lives in Lewisburg with his wife, Lisa, and their twin 10-year-old daughters, Isabella and Gabriella.

Since Ben Landis became the head coach of the Bison in 2005, the following mile-stones have been achieved:

• One Patriot League tournament championship and NCAA berth (2005)

• Two Patriot League regular season titles (2006 and 2007)

• Matched program record for wins (12 in 2006).

• Equaled program record for Patriot League victories (6 in 2006).

• Broke program mark for shutouts (8 in 2008).

• Best winning percentage in program history (.694 in 2006).

• Team goals-against average record broken (0.99 in 2006).

• Broke school records for winning (5) and unbeaten (6) streaks with seven straight victories in 2006.

• First three consecutive above-.500 seasons since 1994-96 (2005-09).

• First three consecutive seasons with 10 wins or more (2005-09).

• First SoccerBuzz and NSCAA Mid-Atlantic regional rankings (2006, 2007).

• 31 All-Patriot League accolades, eight all-region selections, one Patriot League Tournament MVP, four Patriot League Offensive Players of the Year and one Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year.

ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENTThe Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of ex-

cellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University.

The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high na-tional ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek.

Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and bal-ance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell.

The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell.

A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA.

The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholar-athletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.

Amanda Webb joined the Bison women’s soccer coaching staff in the summer of 2011, and she is now in her third season at Bucknell. Among other duties, Webb mentors the Bison goal-keepers, and in 2012 she helped senior Sandita McDermott earn All-Patriot League honors.

A 2008 graduate of Dartmouth College and a three-year starting goal-keeper for the Big Green, Webb came to Bucknell from Brandeis University, where in 2010 she served as an assistant coach for a team that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

As a student-athlete at Dartmouth, Webb helped the Big Green achieve a top-20 national ranking while setting the program record for lowest goals-against average. Dartmouth earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament in her sophomore year in 2005.

After graduation, Webb interned in the Student Life Department at The American Farm School in Thessaloniki, Greece. In addition to educating high school and college-aged students about American culture, she was the head coach of the school’s men’s college soccer team and assisted with the boys’ and girls’ high school teams. After one academic year in Greece, Webb served as the goalkeeping coach at Division I Northeastern University while completing her master’s degree in education at Boston University. In 2009 Northeastern earned the CAA regular-season title and hosted the CAA Championship, and Webb helped goalkeeper Stephanie Gordon earn second-team all-conference honors.

Webb then moved on to Brandeis, where she was the only assistant coach on one of the most successful teams in program history. The Judges finished with a 15-5-1 record and won an NCAA Tournament game for the first time.

SEASON OUTLOOK

This is a year of change in Patriot League soccer. The addition of Boston University and Loyola (Md.) — two traditionally strong women’s sides — makes it a 10-team conference, and as a result the 2013 Pa-triot League Tournament has expanded to six teams. From Bucknell head coach Ben Landis’ perspective, the increased competition will not change his team’s focus or its ultimate goals, which as always are to first qualify for the postseason, then string together enough quality performances to lift a trophy at the end.

“This season is certainly going to have a differ-ent feel to it, but it is all positive and our goals have not changed,” said Landis. “We have the talent to compete for the title, and we come into the season with heavy competition at spots where we did not have much competition in past years. We are going to be young, so we need our seniors to lead through example and for our younger players to be able to apply ideas and concepts quickly.”

Bucknell finished 10-9 a year ago but came up on the short end of a fourth-place tiebreaker and missed the Patriot League Tournament for only the second time in Landis’ eight-year tenure as head coach. Four starters have graduated from that team, including two-time All-Patriot League goalkeeper Sandita McDermott, but the Bison do return their top five scorers from a resurgent offense.

In 2011 Bucknell mustered only 10 goals the en-tire season, but last fall the Bison nearly tripled that total, producing 29 goals in 19 games, and they were shut out just four times all year. A breakout season from striker Chelsey Garkowski and the astute shift of speedster Courtney Nelson from the back four to the left wing helped spur the offensive revival. Garkowski, a senior in 2013, led the team with eight goals and 19 points. She recorded Bucknell’s first four-goal game in 18 years and was a handful for op-ponents with her speed up top.

“Chelsey comes into the year knowing that she can produce goals for us,” said Landis. “Going into last year we thought she could do it, and know we have full confidence in her. Teams know they have to deal with her. She is a great leader and can really set the tone in a match.”

Nelson, a co-captain along with Garkowski and fellow junior midfielder Liz Dwornik, tallied five goals and five assists after starting at fullback as a freshman in 2011. Nelson’s blazing speed proved

more useful on the flank, and on the opposite side junior Cassie Denger also posted career-best num-bers with three goals and five assists for 11 points.

“Courtney has great touch and pace, and as good as she was last season, it’s easy to forget she is still learning the position,” said Landis. “She is an impact player up top and is also a great captain. She really holds her teammates accountable. When healthy, Cassie is one of our fittest players. She has good pace and work rate and knows our system. Liz gave us a spark every time she stepped on the field last season, and whether she is starting or com-ing off the bench, she makes us better. She is at her best playing right behind the strikers, and we will be counting on her to set up scoring opportunities.”

Junior Brigit Falcón, sophomore Danielle Pic-cirilli, who scored twice during her rookie season, and promising freshmen Alexis Gannon and Sarah Bresette give Landis plenty of options in the attack-ing third of his 4-3-3. Throw in talented central mid-fielders Evelyn Nicinski (3 goals, 3 assists in 2012) and Dwornik (2 goals, 4 assists), and the Bison bring back 25 of their 29 goals from last year. All-conference midfielder Kayla Yee has graduated, but Nicinski and Dwornik are both outstanding playmakers who can both finish and set up teammates.

“Evelyn was called up to Poland’s senior nation-al team and we expect her to miss some time due to World Cup qualifying,” said Landis. “She is a great two-way player and is someone that everybody looks up to. Her teammates are drawn to her style on the field and to her personality.”

Senior Corey Tipton and sophomore Madison Loos have both seen game action in the midfield, with Tipton scoring her first collegiate goal last sea-son. Senior Alex Degarmo and freshmen Shannon Donlon, Sam Powers and Cora Climo are also bat-tling for playing time.

Defensively, Bucknell must replace holding mid-fielder Taryn Boucher and three-year starting back Corinne Collins, in addition to McDermott in goal. Lauren Dandie, Bucknell’s top newcomer last season, and another first-year starter in current junior Han-nah Bonotto helped solidify the back four. Senior outside back Bridget Gilmartin, who likes to join the attack when possible, also returns.

“Lauren Dandie had the biggest impact of any of our freshmen last year,” said Landis. “She is a great representative of our program, and her leadership has really emerged since last year. Hannah played center back last season and right back in the spring. She is a smart player who understands the way we want to play in the back. Bridget also brings a ton of experience. We have a lot of depth at outside back this season, so that should mean we can ask her to attack a bit more, which is her strength.”

Sophomore Alex Rosen did not see much action in her first season in orange and blue, but she had a tremendous spring and has a good chance to be in the starting eleven in 2013. Junior Michaela Ber-man and freshmen Montana Paley and Kelsey Witt are also competing for minutes.

“Alex Rosen probably had the best spring of anyone on the team,” Landis offered. “She is a physi-cal specimen who is a beast in the weight room, and we also found out this spring that she partners very well with Lauren Dandie in the two center back spots.”

Sophomore Devan Schulte also had a standout spring season is a strong candidate to fill Boucher’s role sitting in front of the back four.

McDermott was a three-year starter and two-time All-Patriot League goalkeeper who graduated

with top-five rankings in wins, shutouts and goals-against average. It has been a few years since the Bison have had major competition for the starting keeper spot, but Landis has three good candidates battling it out in preseason training. Junior Dana Calderone is a former walk-on who has gotten better and better since joining the team midway through the 2011 season. Sophomore Jessie Ashworth saw about 34 minutes of game action last season while backing up McDermott. The newcomer is Jessica Ratner, who was a four-year starter and a First Team All-State selection at The Pennington School in New Jersey.

“Jessie is a bit undersized, but she is one of the bravest goalkeepers I have seen,” said Landis. “She learned a lot last season playing behind Sandita McDermott and also spending a full year with [goal-keepers coach] Amanda Webb. Dana has improved at her position more than anyone on our roster. She has an awesome attitude and is a terrific teammate. Jessica Ratner has good size and athleticism and reminds us a little bit of a lefty version of ‘Dita. She is going to have to grow up quickly and brush off mistakes. The goalkeeper position is wide open, and I am expecting that it will be a few games into the season before we settle on a No. 1.”

Landis likes the balance in his 2013 schedule, which kicks off on Aug. 23 at home against Rider. The Bison then play three straight on the road against Mount St. Mary’s, Pittsburgh and Robert Morris before returning home to face in-state rivals Saint Francis (Pa.) and Penn State. A mid-September trip to the Baltimore area to take on Towson and UMBC puts an early end to non-league play. The final nine contests of the season are all against Patriot League foes, starting with Army at Emmitt Field on Sept. 21 and wrapping up with a trip to preseason favorite Boston University on Nov. 2.

The revamped Patriot League Tournament gets underway on Tuesday, Nov. 5, with the 3-6 seeds meeting in quarterfinal matches on campus sites. The No. 1 seed will then host the semifinals and championship on Nov. 8 and 10.

“We have five of our first eight league matches at home, and I really like the way our schedule is set up,” said Landis. “During the first few games, we will be doing a lot of learning as coaches, sort of discov-ering ourselves. With two new teams and the tour-nament expanding, this is going to be a very excit-ing year.”

LIFE AFTER BUCKNELL

PL CHAMPIONSHIPS/ALUMNI

Bucknell University alumni ranked No. 4 among liberal arts college graduates and among the highest for all colleges and universities in a 2011 PayScale College Salary Report released this summer. The annual survey, which launched in 2008, assesses median starting and mid-career salaries among graduates of top U.S. liberal arts colleges. This year, alumni from 1,003 schools participated.

In this year’s report, Bucknell alumni had a median starting salary of $52,600 and a median mid-career salary of $108,000. The salary report also ranked Bucknell as 14th among all “top U.S. colleges,” including Ivy League and state universities, for mid-career earning potential.

Bucknell alumni historically have had high job placement rates in their first year after graduation. Nine months after graduation, for instance, 84 percent of the members of the Class of 2010 were either employed or enrolled in graduate or professional school, according to Bucknell’s Career Development Center. A small percentage opted to travel, volunteer or do a combination of both.

National ReputationA number of recent reports have served to underscore Bucknell’s national

reputation: • In 2007, The Washington Monthly ranked Bucknell No. 7 among the best

liberal arts colleges in the country when it comes to fostering research and promoting an ethic of service and social mobility.

• In 2010, the Peace Corps listed Bucknell at No. 6 on its top 25 list of small colleges and universities producing Peace Corps Volunteers.

• In February 2010, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine rated Bucknell as the 11th best value in private liberal arts colleges.

LISA GIBBONS ’95 was Bucknell’s first true superstar in the sport of women’s soccer, and she holds school and Patriot League scoring records that may never be broken. Women’s soccer became a varsity sport at Bucknell in 1990, and in the program’s second year Gibbons came along and instantly helped the team to a seven-win season and credibility in Eastern soccer circles. She finished her career with a whopping 66 goals, 35 assists and 167 points. No other Bison player has scored more than 100 points or 39 goals since then.

Gibbons scored 20 goals in 1993, then as a senior in 1994 she

logged 19 goals and 19 assists for 57 points, the third-highest total in the nation that year. Gibbons was a First Team All-Patriot League selection three times, was the league’s rookie of the year in 1991 and the offensive player of the year in 1993. As a senior, she was named to the NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region Team and was a Christy Mathewson Award winner as the top athlete in her senior class. Gibbons became the first Bucknell women’s soccer player to be elected to the Hall of Fame, entering with the Class of 2006.

THE PATRIOT LEAGUEThe Patriot League, which was founded on the principles of admitting athletes who

are academically representative of their class, is in its third decade of academic and ath-letic achievement. Participation in athletics at Patriot League institutions is viewed as an important component of a well-rounded education.

The Patriot League began as a successful football conference in 1986. Full League members include American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola Maryland and Navy. Associate members include Fordham in

football, Massachusetts Institute of Technology in women’s rowing and Georgetown in football and women’s rowing. These member institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation. Alumni from Patriot League

colleges and universities have played a leadership role in the shaping of our country. In the classroom, the Patriot League’s full-member institutions, individually and collectively, consistently rank among the top Division I programs in the NCAA Graduation Rates Report. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first among all Division I conferences offering scholarships in student-athlete graduation rates according to the NCAA Graduation Rates report. The League finished at the top spot with 96 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 90 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.

In the Patriot League’s history, more than 200 student-athletes have been recognized as CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, while more than 12,000 have qualified for the League’s Academic Honor Roll. More than 30 student-athletes have received NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Additionally, Patriot League student-athletes have earned Fulbright Scholarships, Rhodes Scholarships, Marshall Scholarships and NACDA/Disney Scholarships.

HALL OF FAME, ETC.

BUCKNELL ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME THE PLAN FOR BUCKNELLBucknell is a unique national univer-

sity where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,500 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For more than 160 years, the University has remained true to its funda-mental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world.

In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” Students

helped shape this vision because of their confidence in the University. The Plan comprises five strategies:Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell edu-

cation is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation;

Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a resi-dential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility;

Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Buck-nell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world;

Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research;

Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future.

The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the stu-dents and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade.
