Kinney Natatorium features a 50-meter by 25-yard Olympic class pool, which accomodates four varsity programs mens and womens swimming and diving and mens and womens water polo while enhancing the recreational aquatics opportunities for the Bucknell community. The pool itself features two moveable bulkheads, allowing for multiple team practices and recreational swimming to occur.

Natatorium amenities include seating for 500 spectators, restrooms, separated varsity and visiting team locker rooms, a poolside classroom, sauna, steam room and concession stands.

Already Kinney Natatorium has played host to several major events, most notably the 2005 NCAA Mens Water Polo Championship. The facility, which has been open since 2003, has also served as host of six Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships, the 2004 Eastern Womens Water Polo Championship and an exhibition game against the U.S. womens water polo national team, drawing rave reviews at each. Beginning in the spring of 2005, the Pennsylvania state swimming championships moved to Kinney Natatorium. In the fall of 2010 the CWPA Mens Water Polo Eastern Championship took place inside the gorgeous facility.

  • The term student-athlete signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to

succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with

Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience.

At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics.

Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

Bucknell Bison Athleticssetting the stAndArd of excellence

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents Cups to Academic All-Americans to gradua-tion rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknells student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice, and in the most recent survey in the fall of 2012, Bucknell ranked No. 2 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 131 Patriot League Scholar-Ath-letes of the Year since the leagues inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 399 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Hon-or Roll in 2012-13 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sports competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 509 made the Deans List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during 2012-13.

In addition to the 124 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 338 Academic All-District honor-ees over the same span, including nine in 2012-13.

Bucknell has earned 95 Patriot League championships in 23 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 120 conference players of the year, 103 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 570 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

26 of Bucknells 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2013.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents Cup, signifying the leagues all-sports champion, 18 times in the 23-year history of the affiliation, including 14 of the last 16 years.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-Amer-ica selections with 124.

A major element in ensuring Bucknells commitment to athletics excel-lence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olym-pic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknells Medal of Honor recipients, an Academic All-America wall, a sports med-icine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facilitys layout.

Bucknell Bison AthleticsA nAtionAl Model in ProMoting the scholAr-Athlete ideAl

Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknells FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by pro-moting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally.

SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknells 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is intro-duced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the universitys competitive intercollegiate athletic arena.

ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice.

LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for pro-moting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body.

BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. As part of a Patriot League-wide leadership initiative, this program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features pro-gramming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates and their programs performance immediately and for years to come.

  • The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercol-legiate and intramural programs in higher educa-tion, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University.

The Department believes that student-athletes academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknells high national ranking for student-athletes graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches and staffs paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek.

Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, develop-ment, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for ser-vice and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recre-ational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Departments programs add substantially to Bucknells sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell.

The Department embraces the Universitys deci-sion to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Associa-tion (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknells high standards and serious-ness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive suc-cess the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot Leagues Presidents Cup student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recogni-tion to Bucknell.

A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA.

The department is proud that so many of todays exemplary Bison scholar-athletes will be tomorrows outstanding leaders.

  • 2013 Season PreviewIts not the same team as last year. We have new student-athletes. This

team hasnt won anything. The team last year won a Southern Champion-ship. We have forgotten about last year. Its a completely new team and a new year and I have no idea how much success we will have.

Bucknell third-year head coach John McBride matter-of-factly said those words just a couple days before the start of preseason practice for the 2013 campaign. While he might not know how good the Bison will be this fall, most observers think Bucknell should be at least as good as last years squad that won the schools first-ever Southern Championships crown and came an overtime loss away from the programs first NCAA bid in nearly 30 years.

The Bison, who are ranked 14th in the preseason national poll, lost only two seniors to graduation in the offseason. However, those two seniors were integral to the teams success last fall. Honorable Mention All-American Brian Barron and current professional goalie Matt Napleton departed, but Bucknell returns plenty of firepower with four players who have registered at least 100 career points and one other who has 98.

The guys that are returning now know what it takes to get to that level, so they have been very motivated in their offseason training, said McBride, referencing last years postseason success. Their attitude is fantastic. They are very excited, but its my job to bring them back to reality. They cant just walk in and repeat the process again.

If the Bison are to achieve even more postseason success this fall it will be on the defensive end of the pool.

We are always a defensive-minded team, stated McBride. We practice very little offense. Defense is the focus and thats what these guys will be working on the next three months.

One key question entering the season is the back line of the defense. Junior Keegan Williams will be taking over the goalkeeper position from Napleton, a two-time all-conference selection. Williams appeared in 12 games over his first two years, has 49 career saves and a .510 save percent-age in a reserve capacity.

"I think Keegan will be great," predicted McBride. "He's had the op-portunity to play behind one of the best goalies on the East Coast. There are going to be growing pains with him now having to be the man, but I think he will be fine and we expect him to make the blocks he is supposed to make. Just because he is new doesn't mean the expectations won't be the same as when Napleton was here."

While Williams is expected to join the starting lineup for the first time, Bucknell has five returning starters and one reserve who played starters minutes. Four of those players are part of the six-member senior class.

"A lot of the seniors got thrown into starting roles as sophomores," explained McBride. "Coming so close to NCAAs last year has motivated them to be really good leaders and let the younger guys know how big of a deal the next step is. Without those guys leading the way we won't have success."

Much of last year's success can be traced to the combination Bucknell had at the center position with Jack Else and Mike Kimble. Else typically started games and then the two would sub in and out on nearly every goal in an attempt to wear down the opposition.

"We're going to do the same thing," said McBride. "We have a potent one-two punch and are going to use it. They want

to win bad and they know they are not done getting better."Else, an Honorable Mention All-America selection, was second on the

team with 55 goals last year and his 133 ejections drawn nearly doubled his own school record of 78. Else enters his final campaign with a program-record 238 ejections drawn, nearly 33 percent more than anyone else since 2000, the first year the statistic was tracked.

Kimble was second on the squad with 37 ejections drawn and his 48 goals ranked fourth. Else and Kimble combined for 103 of Bucknell's 333 goals.

Sophomore Stefan Aleksic was named the Eastern Championship Rookie of the Tournament last November after totaling six goals and three as-sists and netting the game-winning score in the semifinals against No. 20 Princeton. That postseason performance capped a year in which he led the team in points (101) and assists (50). His team-high 30 field blocks nearly doubled the next highest total on the squad.

"Stefan is solid," commented McBride. "He is not going to make many mistakes and he is going to take advantage of the opportunities to score. He is still adjusting to NCAA water polo and needs to do a better job on the defensive end of not getting ejected."

Senior Alex Nowlin, who is a team captain along with Else and Kimble, adds to the potent goal-scoring punch of the Bison. He ranked third on the team with 84 points (38g, 46a) last year and enters his senior season three points shy of 200 for his career. Nowlin needs just nine assists to crack the program's career top-10 list.

"Alex is a leader on offense," praised McBride. "He's a guy we need in there in critical situations, like six-on-fives. He is a vocal leader and has a high water polo IQ."

Senior Julian Colina and sophomore Nick Hale are two more returning starters who will contribute this coming year. Colina started 30 games a year ago and totaled 48 points (31g, 17a), while Hale registered 35 points (17g, 18a) as a rookie.

"Julian is a smart player who comes from a water polo family," said Mc-Bride. "He's just a dependable guy. When he's in the water I am confident he will do the right thing.

"I expect Nick to get better and better. He has just scratched the surface of his abilities and is ready to take that next step and be a force on both ends of the pool."

Due to the success and talent of so many veterans, McBride will rely on the rest of the roster for depth and to fill certain roles. Among the most prominent of those players is senior Stephen Norton. The veteran appeared in 22 games a year ago and totaled six goals and five assists, including the game-winning score at Santa Clara.

"Our role players are going to get their minutes," mentioned McBride. "They are going to do what's asked of them and are going to contribute. They have an expecta-tion from us that they will be role players and hopefully they fill those roles."

Despite losing just two seniors to gradu-ation, Bucknell has seven freshmen on the 2013 roster. McBride thinks many of the newcomers have the talent to earn playing time, but must adjust to the college game.

Bucknell opens its 2013 season Sept. 7-8 at the Navy Invite. The Bison will play at home in Kinney Natatorium Sept. 13-15 and Oct. 12-13.

  • Academy and eventually graduated from the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy in 1996. He then served as a patrolman and SWAT officer for the North Providence Police from 1996 to 2004.

McBride got his start in coaching in 2001 when he founded the Newport Lady Tritons Water Polo Club. He proceeded to coach the club, which was made up of high school-aged players, until 2003. At that time, McBride found-ed the Ocean State Masters Swim Team, which featured more than 100 ath-letes who competed in masters swim meets and triathlons all over the world.

McBrides most recent start-up project was the Bruno Water Polo Club, which he began as a non-profit organization in Providence, R.I., in 2007. The club gives inner-city youth an opportunity to enjoy the sport of water polo.

McBride and his wife, Sam, have two daughters, Grace (13) and Lily (11).

    John McBRide

John McBride, who served as an assistant coach at Brown the previous sev-en years, was named the head mens and womens water polo coach at Buck-nell on May 18, 2011. McBride, a 1992 graduate of Rhode Island who was a four-year starter in goal as a member of the water polo program, also has an extensive background with the U.S. National Team, serving as head coach of the mens Northeast Zone Olympic Development Team since 2009.

Just two years into his Bucknell tenure, McBride has already guided the Bi-son programs for four seasons and been a part of 55 victories. He has led the mens team to back-to-back above-.500 records, a 2012 Southern Champion-ships title and the programs first Eastern Championship title game appearance in nearly 20 years. The men have finished above .500 six times in the last seven years and have had nine consecutive top-five finishes at Easterns. The womens squad has collected 23 victories the last two springs while playing extremely challenging schedules that have featured 23 ranked foes, including 14 in 2012.

While at Brown, McBride helped guide the Bears to unprecedented success. The mens squad captured the 2009 Collegiate Water Polo Association North-ern Division title, its first conference crown in nearly 25 years. Additionally, the team went undefeated in regular-season conference play in 2008 and finished as high as fourth at the Eastern Championship.

On the womens side, McBride led the Bears to back-to-back ECAC Champi-onship titles in 2009 and 2010 and a fourth-place finish at the Eastern Champi-onship, the best showing at Brown since 2001.

Both the mens and womens squads appeared regularly in the national top-20 rankings during McBrides tenure, which also featured 43 All-Northern Divi-sion selections and 22 All-East players. Additionally, three Bears earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.

Browns mens team had the highest team grade-point average in the nation for four years, while the women ranked in the top three nationally four times.

A goalie on the U.S. National B Team in 1993, McBride has become a rec-ognizable face in National Team circles. In addition to his duties as the mens Northeast Zone Olympic Development Team head coach, he has served as head coach of the Southeast Zone Olympic Development Program. McBride has also spent time as an evaluator and coach at the womens Speedo Top 40 Camp at Harvard.

Among his many responsibilities with the National Teams, McBride evalu-ates and coaches the top 16 men from the East Coast to compete for spots on the U.S. National Team. He has also coached regional teams comprised of the best Northern California collegiate players and helps the U.S. Junior Na-tional Team Coaches bring the best players to represent the U.S. in inter-national competitions.

An accomplished goalie during his playing days at Rhode Island, McBride was a three-time First Team All-New England selection and was twice a First Team All-East honoree.

Following his graduation from Rhode Island with a degree in speech communications, McBride attended the Rhode Island Department of Cor-rections Academy and the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility Corrections

He joined the Bison staff in 2000 and af-ter three seasons as the athletic trainer for the Bucknell men's basketball team was appointed to his current role, coinciding with the opening of the sparkling 15,000-square-foot Krebs Family Fitness Center and Berger Family Weight Room.

A 1996 graduate of East Stroudsburg University with a degree in move-ment studies and exercise science, Shreck is charged with detailed daily strength and conditioning routines for each of Bucknell's athletic programs.

A native of Mongomery, Pa., Shreck is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the National Council of Strength and Fitness. He contributes to many strength and fitness websites and is a question and answer expert of several professional fitness forums. Shreck, whospeaks at numerous national strength and conditioning conferences each year, is an innovator of several training styles and is sought out by many professionals for his injury prevention techniques.

Under Shreck, the general philosophy of the Bison strength program is year-round periodization with a high-intensity base, supplemented with functional and sport-specific training. Training programs for most teams employ explosion techniques with power bands and plyometrics.

The ultimate goal of the strength and conditioning program is the pre-vention of injuries and training athletes to their peak physical condition.

  • The Scott Schulte Award was established in 1980 in honor of the two-time water polo All-American and is presented annually to the individual who contributes the most to Bucknell water polo. 2011 Bucknell gradu-ate Richie Hyden was the most recent recipient of the prestigious award.

An All-East water polo selection four straight years (1977-1980), Schulte led Bucknell to four Eastern cham-pionships, and set an all-time NCAA water polo career scoring record with 586 goals.

The high scorer in four straight NCAA Tournaments (the only player to accomplish this feat) and holder of the career record of 50 goals in NCAA championships, Schulte played on Bucknell teams that had a combined record of 114-15-3, and

he was a Second Team All-American in 1979 and 1980. He was the only player outside of California selected to those All-America squads.

He was twice selected to the AAU All-America First Team in water polo, and seven times in his career finished in the top six of an East Coast Conference Swimming Cham-pionship event. He won Buck-nells Christy Mathewson Award, which recognizes the top athlete of the senior class, in 1981.

Schulte was a member of the U.S. National Team from

1980-84, was a First-Team Indoor All-American from 1981-85, was Most Valuable Player at the Indoor Nationals in 1981 and 1984, and competed in the World Uni-versity Games in 1981. He was inducted into the Bucknell Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Collegiate Water Polo Association Hall of Fame in 2006.

    sCott sChulte award

Scott Schulte 81 (r) and Mark Gensheimer 81 (l) present the Bucknell University Mens

Water Polo Alumni Award to former head coach Dick Russell.

    sCott sChulte award winners

The Collegiate Water Polo Association announced that former Bucknell mens water polo and swimming coach Dick Russell, along with Richard Hunkler of Slippery Rock, would compose the initial class inducted into the CWPA Hall of Fame in 2002. Both Russell and Hunkler laid the foundation for the organization that exists today and were instrumental in its development for almost 20 years.

Russell served Bucknell as an associate professor of physical education and de-veloped a local swim class program. It was there he founded a water polo club in 1968, which continued until 1977, when the team achieved varsity status. Between 1977 and 1986, Russells water polo teams tallied an amazing record of 223-68-4. This consis-tent success made Russell the first coach in Bucknell history to record more than 100 victories in two sports, swimming and water polo. Under Russell the water polo teams won four Eastern Championships and competed in the NCAA Championship five times. He was named Eastern Water Polo Coach of the Year in 1985.

Although it seemed minor at the time, one of his biggest achievements has had a tremendous impact on the sport through-out the country. Russell was the founder of the Mid-Atlantic Conference, now known as

    the Collegiate W
