ABOUT BLOOMSBURG

Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, is a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Through the stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education.

Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States, and excellence, ranging from its 18 national championships to its international reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff.

About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it’s a busy place — with more than 200 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation center.

The university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through nondegree credit courses , noncredit minicourses, off-campus classes, credit for life experience and distance learning courses on public television.

The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000 people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants, and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town.

The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.

2013 Season Preview

For the Bloomsburg University field hockey team, August brings not only the excitement of the up-coming new season but also a trip to compete in a week-long competition in Vancouver.

While the season-opening journey to Canada will bring a great opportunity to tune-up for the season, including a contest against a Canadian national team, the trip might hold even more importance because it will allow the Huskies an opportunity to properly get to know each other.

With 13 new faces on this season’s roster, the Huskies boast a much different look than that of a year ago – or even from spring workouts. While the large group of newcomers haven’t been in maroon and gold long, they’ve likely all been brought up to speed on how last season ended and the desire of the upper-classmen to make another deep post-season run. A first-round defeat at the hands of Millersville in the PSAC playoffs marked the first time since 2001 that the Huskies haven’t either captured the conference title or finished runner-up. It was also the first time during that span where a season ended without a bid for Bloomsburg in the NCAA Tournament.

“Losing in the first round of the conference playoffs last year stung,” Bloomsburg head coach Nikki Rhoads said. “I think the players want it bad this year. It’s not the title that they want; it’s the success they want for the program. That’s the way it’s been since I’ve been here. We want to play for Bloomsburg University, the representation for the institution itself and the field hockey program.”

A group of four seniors, the first graduating class to only play for Rhoads, along with a talented batch of new players aims to bring the Huskies back to the top of Division II this fall.

ATTACK

There’s little doubt the Huskies will miss All-PSAC and second team All-American selection Brooke Simonovich. Bloomsburg will need to replace Simonovich’s team-leading 15 goals from a season ago and will look to several different players to fill the void. The team’s second-leading scorer from last year is gone as well with Jenna DiSabatino (14 goals) also graduated.

Senior Brittany Mathews leads the returning members of the attack after tallying six goals and 15 points in a standout junior campaign. Over her three seasons with the Huskies, Mathews has played in 57 games while scoring 16 goals.

Fellow senior Samantha Facciolla started all 19 games last year while playing a key role but could transition into a new posi-tion this year. A defender and midfield presence for her first two seasons, she began to shift to the attack last year. Rhoads expects Facciolla to display versatility as a component of both the attack and the backfield.

Also vying for time on the attack are juniors Felicia Domenici and Nikki Black, who each saw solid time a season ago, along with sophomore Nikki Gattone who made her Huskies debut last year.

MIDFIELD

The Huskies also seek a replacement at center midfield after first team All-American selection Amber Aulenbach graduated after tallying 24 points last year, leaving Bloomsburg without its top three scorers from a year ago. Cassie DiSabatino (three goals, nine points) also graduated last May.

“We have some very capable freshmen and transfers coming in,”

Huskies Field Hockey

Rhoads said.

Junior Candice Smith started 14 contests last fall and could shift from outside to center midfield after enjoying a strong spring season.

Another player who could display versatility while moving across the field this year is sophomore Meagen Hill. Hill saw time in all 19 games with 13 starts between midfield and defense last year and returns this fall.

Newcomer Angie DeBellis, a transfer from the University of Vermont, has three years of eligibility remaining and is expected to contribute right away. She appeared in 16 games for the Divi-sion I Catamounts last year, making five starts and scoring three goals, tying for second on the team. DeBellis played high school field hockey at the powerhouse Emmaus High School program alongside Huskies sophomore Gabriana Nisiotis.

DEFENSE

The defense has a few more familiar faces. The unit again has the leadership of senior Jaclyn Beasley, a second team All-PSAC Eastern Division second team selection last year. A former trans-fer from American University, Beasley has used her stellar stick work to guide the Huskies’ backline the past two seasons and also has racked up 14 points during that span.

Nisiotis made an instant impact as a freshman starting every game last year and also returns this fall. Junior Courtney Berger was limited to 10 games last year due to an injury but returns this season. Facciolla and Hill could again impact the defense as well.

“I can see them doing really good things for us,” Rhoads said of her defense. “I’m confident in the returners for sure and their

ability to help our freshmen as they transition into their roles.”

Senior Megan Eppley again handles duties in the cage after post-ing 95 saves and a 1.48 goals against average last season. She also registered four shutouts during the year. Adding depth in net are sophomore Emiley Maiorana and freshman Lindsay Cassel.

NEWCOMERS

With nearly a full team’s worth of newcomers, Rhoads hopes to see several make strong impacts this season.

“We’re excited about the potential growth they’re going to give us this season,” she said. “The freshmen are going to definitely see some roles. We need them to have a successful season.”The freshman class includes Cassel, Brianna Zimmerman, Peyton Shockley, Stephanie Halsted, Sam Peters, Steph Buck, El-eanor Kirby, Lexi Roth, Laura Gerhard, Courtney Heverly, Ciera Lahr and Allison Wardrop.

OVERALL

Bloomsburg, along with the rest of the PSAC, will take on a re-structured schedule this season as the conference shifts to a one-division alignment. Additionally, no games against conference opponents before Sept. 28 will count in the PSAC standings. All will be chasing back-to-back national champion West Chester.“West Chester, being back-to-back national champions, they de-serve the recognition. But I think there are going to be surprises within the conference,” Rhoads surmised. “Millersville, obviously beating us last year on our home field, they have grown tremen-dously. Having the new, centralized division in effect, you’re going to have to be battling just to get into the playoffs.”Bloomsburg opens its season at home vs. Stonehill on Sept. 7 at Sports Stadium.

Joining her were national players of the year Maggey Bloskey and Chelsea Due while Aubrey Carman and Caitlin Koczynski also received All-American honors.

2010Hopes of a fifth straight national cham-pionship came to an end with a 1-0 loss in the NCAA Semi-finals against Shippensburg. Bloomsburg claimed their 17th PSAC title in a 2-1 defeat of East Stroudsburg. Riley, Renn, and Rush were named All-Americans.

2011After winning the first 19 games of the season and earning the right to host the NCAA Division II Championships, the Huskies’ perfect season came to an abrupt stop in the national semifinals. Bloomsburg fell to West Chester in pen-alty strokes, 3-2 (2OT). However, the Huskies did win their fourth consecu-tive PSAC title; their 18th in school his-tory. Meghan Hollenbach, Amanda Ri-ley, and Amber Aulenbach were named NFHCA Division II All-Americans.

A true NCAA coaching legend, Jan Hutchinson retired at the end of the 2009 season, after seeing the Huskies win their fourth consecutive NCAA Division II champion-ship. As head field hockey coach, she was in charge of a program that has won 16 national championships and 17 conference titles. While as head softball coach, she is the NCAA Division II all-time leader in career wins and has made an NCAA-record 28 consecutive trips to the Division II championships. Hutchinson also is the win-ningest college coach in any division with 1,806 combined wins between field hockey and softball.

FIELD HOCKEYWhile at Bloomsburg, Hutchinson’s field hockey squads posted winning records in 31 of her 32 seasons and amassed an overall record of 591-75-20 for a winning percent-age of .872. She is the winningest coach in NCAA field hockey history and is the only coach with over 500 victories.

Under Hutchinson, the Huskies have enjoyed many outstanding seasons and have won 16 or more games on 26 occasions. Her teams won national championships in 1981, 1983, 1984, 1987, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008 and in 2009. Her first string of four straight titles (1996-99) was the first time in the history of NCAA field hockey that the feat was accomplished. Her teams have also registered nine national runner-up finishes.

In addition, the Huskies captured Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championships in 1983, 1984, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2009, garnering eight runner-up showings.

Hutchinson has been chosen as the national Division II Coach of the Year seven times in her career, including 1991, 1998, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2009. Her 2006 team went undefeated and untied on its way to the NCAA D-II championship, the fourth time in school history for that to happen.

Her 2008 team set numerous school, conference and NCAA Division II marks, includ-ing a record for goals scored in a season with 161, shattering the mark of 132 set by the Huskies in 2007. She also coached Jamie Vanartsdalen, the NCAA all-time record holder for goals and points in a season and career.

Four athletes on the 2009 team achieved NFH-CA All-American honors, bringing the total under Hutchinson to 54 performers who have combined to win 105 All-American awards. Under Hutchinson’s leadership, 12 Bloomsburg players, including Vanartsdalen in 2007 and 2008, have also been named national “Player of the Year,” the most of any coach in Division II.

SOFTBALLOne of the most successful coaches ever in Di-vision II softball history, Jan Hutchinson retired at the end of the 2010 season.

During her career as coach of the Huskies, Hutchinson posted a record of 1,215-288-2 (.805) and has made an NCAA record 28 con-secutive trips to the NCAA championship tour-nament. She has the most wins of any NCAA Division II coach in history and is sixth on the all-time wins list regardless of division. She is also second on the NCAA Division list and sev-enth overall for highest winning percentage.

Bloomsburg has been to the championship round nine times, twice finishing as the national runner-up with losses each time in extra in-nings in the national title game. She also has six third-place showings and two fourth-place finishes. The Huskies also won the 1982 AIAW national championship.

In softball, Bloomsburg holds 16 NCAA Di-vision II individual, team or championship records. In only her fourth season, Hutchinson won the national championship “double” in the 1981-82 school year, claiming the field hockey title in the fall and the softball championship that spring.

Bloomsburg has dominated Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) competition win-ning 15 softball championships. In addition, her players have enjoyed recognition in softball with 36 players earning 57 All-American awards.

OVERALLHutchinson’s achievements in coaching have not gone unnoticed by her peers. She has been honored with induction into both the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Halls of Fame. In addition, Hutchinson was named the winner of the C. Vivian Stringer Award by the United States Sports Academy in the summer of 2006.

Hutchinson’s coaching talents have not only helped those as student-athletes, but several of her former players have gone on to coach at the intercollegiate level. At Bloomsburg, she has former All-American performers as her top as-sistant coaches in softball.

Others have gone on to coaching jobs elsewhere, such as Janelle Breneman (head softball coach at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro), Marci Hickey (head softball coach at the Uni-versity of Vermont), Leah Conte (former assistant field hockey and lacrosse coach at Mary Washington College) and Kathy Frick (former head coach at Goucher College, Bloomsburg and current head coach of Lafayette University lacrosse.)

Two former softball players have also played professionally. Janelle Breneman was a member of the Georgia Pride and Marty Laudato was a member of the Tampa Bay Fire Stix. In 1999, Laudato was named WPSL Hitter of the Year.

A 1971 graduate of East Stroudsburg University, Hutchinson also earned a master’s degree in education from the school in 1979. Prior to Bloomsburg, she initiated the women’s physical education program at Blair Academy and served as head coach for field hockey, basketball and softball. She has also been inducted into the Newton High School and Sussex County (NJ) Halls of Fame. In 2000, the Bloomsburg softball field was named in her honor.
