    Bob Huggins has posted a 38-14 mark in conference tournaments, including 10 championships in four different leagu

    WVU is 23-13 in March under Bob Huggins, including wins in 11 of its last 19 games in the month of March. WVU is 38-2

    Bob Huggins, with 723 career wins, needs one win to tie Ray Meyer for 18th place on the NCAA Division I all-timewinningest coaches list. Huggins recorded win No. 700 against Missouri State on Dec. 22, 2011. Huggins became the 2

    Bob Huggins is the third-winningest active coach behind Mike Krzyzewski and Jim Boeheim. West Virginia is playing its first season in the Big 12 Conference in 2012-13. The Mountaineers were members of the

    East Conference for the previous 17 seasons.

    WVU has won 78 of its last 100 non-conference games and 83 of its last 106 non-league contests (includespostseason).

    Sixty-six of Bob Huggins 133 victories have been away from the WVU Coliseum.

    WVU has won 95 of its last 124 games against unranked teams, including 49 of its last 56 at the WVU Coliseum.

    A proven success as a program builder,recruiter and game strategist who has won 723games as a collegiate head coach, Bob Hugginshas directed his alma mater to 133 victories, the2010 NCAA Final Four, the 2010 Big EastChampionship and five consecutive NCAAtournament appearances during his first fiveseasons in Morgantown.

    Huggins, a 1977 graduate of West VirginiaUniversity, was introduced as WVUs 21stmensbasketball coach on Good Friday, April 6, 2007.

    Huggins, 59, has compiled a 723-285 (.732)record in his 31st season as a head coach, which includes stints atWalsh College (1980-83), Akron (1984-1989), Cincinnati (1989-2005),Kansas State (2006-07) and West Virginia (2007-present). He ranks

    third in total victories and 12th in winning percentage among activeDivision I head coaches.Huggins teams have participated in postseason play in 27 of his

    30 seasons, including 20 NCAA tournaments. His squads have won 20or more games in all but five of his 30 campaigns, including 30 ormore three times, and he has averaged 23.8 victories a season.

    On Dec. 22, 2011, Huggins became the 20th Division I coach(minimum 10 years coaching in Division I) to reach 700 victories whenthe Mountaineers defeated Missouri State. Also in 2011-12, theMountaineers advanced to their fifth consecutive NCAA tournamentappearance under Huggins. Kevin Jones became Huggins 11 thAll-American when he was named to the John Wooden All-America teamwhile also being tabbed a second team consensus All-American.

    Huggins led the Mountaineers to another NCAA appearance in2010-11, finishing with a No. 20 ranking in the final APpoll. Hugginsbecame the first WVU coach to win 20 games in each of his first fourseasons. The Mountaineers finished with 21 victories, including 11 BigEast wins. Along the way, WVU defeated No. 8 Notre Dame, No. 8Purdue, No. 11 Louisville, No. 13 Georgetown and No. 16 Connecticut. Offthe court, for the second year in a row, West Virginia finished ranked inthe top 10 percent of all basketball teams in the 2011 NCAA Division IAcademic Progress Rate (APR).

    In 2009-10, Huggins guided West Virginia to one of the mostmemorable seasons in school history. The Mountaineers reached theNCAA Final Four for the first time since 1959 and won their first Big EastChampionship. WVU recorded a school record 31 victories and alsoposted a school-best 13 Big East victories, finishing the season rankedNo. 3 in the final ESPN/USA TodayCoaches Poll. For the third year in arow, Huggins was named state coach of the year by the West VirginiaState Sports Writers Association.

    DaSean Butler, winner of the 2010 Lowes Senior CLASS Award,earned first team All-America honors by Basketball Timesand the JohnWooden All-America team. In June, Butler was the 42ndselection in thesecond round by the Miami Heat, while Devin Ebanks was taken onepick later by the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers.

    Off the court, the WVU mens basketball team ranked in the top 10percent of all squads in the 2010 NCAA Division I Academic ProgressRate (APR). In addition, the Big East awarded WVU the team excellenceaward for the highest grade point average among Big East mensbasketball teams.

    In 2008-09, Huggins led the Mountaineers to 23 victories in his

    second season at WVU, advancing to the NCAA tournament for thesecond year in a row. Huggins became the second Mountaineer coachto win 20 games in his first two seasons in Morgantown. TheMountaineers reached the semifinals of the Big East Championship forthe second year in a row. After the season, Huggins was named statecoach of the year by the West Virginia State Sports Writers Association,his second-consecutive honor.

    Butler was named to the All-Big East Second Team, Ebanks wastabbed to the All-Big East Rookie Team and All-Big East TournamentTeam and Alex Ruoff was named honorable mention all-conference.Ruoff was named a first team Academic All-American by CoSIDA, theBig East Mens Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Big EastSport Excellence award winner.

    In his first season at WVU, Huggins took the Mountaineers to theNCAA Sweet 16, becoming the first Mountaineer coach to take a teamthat far in NCAA tournament play in his first season. With 26 victories,he won more games in his first year than any other coach in WVUhistory. West Virginia tied the school record for Big East victories with 11.After finishing the season with a No. 17 ranking, Huggins was namedstate coach of the year by the W.Va. State Sportswriters Association.

    Huggins also had his sixth first round NBA draft pick and fourthlottery pick when WVUs Joe Alexander was selected as the eighth pickby the Milwaukee Bucks. Alexanders first-round selection was WVUshighest NBA pick since Ron Williams went in the first round of the 1968NBA Draft.

    Huggins has coached 18 NBA draft selections as well as 11 All-Americans. He has also guided 56 all-conference selections in DivisionI. Since Huggins has been at WVU, three players earned All-Big EastFirst Team honors Jones (2012), Butler (2010) and Alexander (2008).Other Big East honorees were Butler (second team, 2009), Darryl Bryant(third team, 2012), Ebanks (third team, 2010) Ruoff (honorable mention,2009) and Jones (honorable mention, 2011).

    Alexander was just one of four Huggins players to earn majorawards in 2008. Ruoff was named a third-team Academic All-Americanby ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA, one of just 15 players named nationallyand the only student-athlete from the Big East. Darris Nichols earnedthe Big East Sportsmanship Award, while Ted Talkington was namedthe Big East Mens Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Ruoff alsoearned the Big East Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award.

    In 2006-07, Huggins led Kansas State to 23 wins, the Wildcatsmost wins in 19 years. K-State broke an eight-year postseason droughtwhen Huggins led the Wildcats to the NIT second round. The Wildcatsalso collected 10 Big 12 wins for the first time since the leaguesinception in 1997. Huggins earned USBWA District VI Coach of the Yearhonors as well as Big 12 Coach of the Year by the Kansas City Star.

    Huggins elevated the Cincinnati program to among the nationselite. He registered a 399-127 record (.759) during his tenure, makinghim the winningest coach in terms of victories and percentage in theschools rich basketball history. The Bearcats advanced to postseasonplay in each of his 16 seasons, reaching the Elite Eight of the NCAATournament three times and in 1992, appearing in the Final Four.Huggins directed Cincinnati to 10 conference regular season titles andeight league tournament titles.

    Huggins directed the Bearcats to successive finishes in the Final

    Four and Elite Eight. Over the ensuing seasons, he developed youngand inexperienced squads with as many as three freshmen starters intsquads that captured two more league titles and made another pair ofNCAA appearances. Huggins surprised the basketball world in 1998 bydirecting a team that had only one returning starter to a 27-6 record,conference regular season and tournament titles, a No. 2 seed in theNCAA tournament and a Top 10 finish in the polls. Huggins 2002 teamunranked when the season began, posted a 31-4 record, setting aCincinnati mark for victories.

    Huggins earned the Ray Meyer Award as the Conference USACoach of the Year a record three times (1998, 1999 and 2000), and wasa unanimous choice as the Conference USA Coach of the Decade. Hewas selected as national coach of the year by ESPN.com in 2002. Hewas named co-national coach of the year by The Sporting Newsin2005 and wasBasketball Times National Coach of the Year in 1998. Heearned national coach of the year recognition from Hoop Scoopin 199and Playboyin 1993.

    In 2002, Huggins suffered a major heart attack on the lastSaturday of September but was present for the teams first practice twoweeks later and coached the Bearcats with the same intensity that hasbecome his trademark. The 2003-04 season was business as usual forHuggins, who piloted the Bearcats to Conference USA regular seasonand tournament titles and an NCAA tourney berth while amassing a25-7 record.

    Huggins earned his first head coaching assignment at WalshCollege (now University), an NAIA school in North Canton, Ohio, in 1980at the age of 27. A program with just two winning seasons in theprevious 17 years, Huggins transformed the Cavalier program into oneof the best in the NAIA ranks in just three short seasons. He compiled a71-26 record (.732) from 1980 to 1983, twice guiding the team to thepostseason, including their first-ever NAIA national tournamentappearance.

    After coaching the team to 14 victories in his first season, Hugginshelped produce a 23-9 record in his sophomore campaign and an NAIAdistrict playoff appearance in 1981-82, which includes the schools firstMid-Ohio championship. His final team finished the regular seasonwith a 30-0 record and a No. 2 national ranking before winning fourmore games to qualify for the programs first-ever NAIA nationaltournament. The Cavaliers lost in the national tournament to SalemCollege, 65-63, to end the nations longest winning streak of 34.Huggins was twice named NAIA District 22 Coach of the Year following

    the 1982 and 1983 seasons.After a one-year stint as an assistant coach at Central Florida in

    1983-84, Huggins accepted his first Division I head coaching position atAkron in 1984. He quickly resurrected another program that had fallenon difficult times, as he guided the Zips to a 97-46 (.678) overall recordand to postseason play in three of his five seasons. The programposted 20 or more wins in a season on four occasions.

    After a 12-14 mark in his first season, Huggins led Akron to its firstNCAA tournament appearance and conference title at the Division Ilevel in 1986 with a 22-8 record. Winners of the Ohio Valley Conferenceregular season and tournament championship, the 15th-seeded Zipslost in the first round of the NCAA tournament to fifth-seeded Michigan70-64. In guiding the team to its highest win total in 13 seasons,Huggins was named the Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year. Hecontinued his success with the first of three consecutive 21-win seasonin 1987 and an appearance in the first round of the NIT. Hugginscapped his five-year tenure at Akron in 1989 by helping the Zips to theisecond trip to the NIT in 1989 with a 21-8 record.

    After his playing career at West Virginia, Huggins began hiscoaching career as a graduate assistant at WVU for his college coach,

    Joedy Gardner, in 1977. He moved to Ohio State the following seasonto assist head coach Eldon Miller. During his two-year stint from 1978-80, Huggins helped the Buckeyes to a 40-20 (.667) record and a pair ofpostseason appearances, including the second round of the 1980 NCAAtournament.

    Huggins was a three-year all-Ohio selection and the 1972 OhioPlayer of the Year while playing for his father, Charles, at Indian ValleySouth High in Gnadenhutten, Ohio. He first attended Ohio Universitybut transferred to West Virginia after his freshman season.

    Huggins was a three-year letterman for the Mountaineers underGardner from 1975-77. As a senior and tri-captain, he helped the squadto an 18-11 overall record and a tie for the Eastern Collegiate BasketbalLeague (ECBL) Western division title. In addition to helping the teamearn its highest win total in nine seasons, he was named MVP afterpacing the squad with 3.8 assists per game average.

    A two-time Academic All-American, Huggins graduated from WestVirginia magna cum laude in 1977 and received his masters in healthadministration from WVU in 1978.

    Huggins was born in Morgantown on Sept. 21, 1953. He and hiswife, June, have two daughters, Jenna Leigh and Jacqueline.

    Phillips 66 Big 12 Mens Basketball Championship Notebook West Virginia will be playing in its first Phillips 66 Big 12 Mens Basketball Championship.

    Coach Bob Huggins is 7-4 in conference championship play at West Virginia.

    Huggins is 1-1 in Big 12 Championship play. At Kansas State in 2006-07, the Wildcats defeated Texas Tech, 66-45, before falling to Kansas, 67-61. WVUs most recent conference championship came in 2010 when WVU won its first Big East Championship title after defeating Cincinnati, Notre Dame and Georgetown.

    The wins over Cincinnati and Georgetown were on DaSean Butler game-winning shots. WVU never trailed in the second half in any of the three games, despite winning the

    three games by a combined seven points.

    West Virginia has reached the semifinals in three of its five conference tournaments under Bob Huggins.

    WVU has reached the semifinals in four of the last eight conference championships with a Big East Championship finals appearance in 2005 and a tournament title in 2010.

    West Virginia has won 11 of its last 18 conference championship games, all of those coming since 2005. Prior to 2010, the last time WVU won a conference championship was in 1983-84 when the Mountaineers won three games in winning the Atlantic 10 tournament.

    Huggins In Division I Conference Tournaments Bob Huggins is coaching in his 25th Division I conference tournament in his sixth different league (Ohio Valley 1985-87; Metro 1989-91; Great Midwest 1991-95; Conference USA 1996-

    2005; Big 12 2007; Big East 2008-12; Big 12 2013-).

    He has posted a 38-14 mark in his career in conference tournaments, including 10 championships in four different leagues.

    Huggins won the Big East Championship in 2010, Ohio Valley Championship in 1986, Great Midwest in 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996 and Conference USA in 1998, 2002 and 2004. His Walsh College teams won the American Mideast in 1982 and 1983.

    Series Record Against Texas Tech This will be the fourth meeting between West Virginia and Texas Tech. The first meeting took place in the NCAA Sweet 16 on March 24, 2005, in Albuquerque, N.M. The Mountaineers,

    behind 22 points from Kevin Pittsnogle, defeated the Red Raiders, 65-60. WVU then narrowly lost in overtime to

    WVU Basketball Tradition This is the 104th season and 110th year overall for West Virginia basketball, which began in 1903. The Mountaineers own a 1,634-1,022 all-time record in intercollegiate basketball competition, ranking the

    Mountaineers 21st among all Division I schools.

    WVU has earned 25 NCAA berths and 15 NIT trips since 1941, and has finished in the Top 25 17 times, including anamazing nine straight years from 1955-63.

    In the past eight years, the Mountaineers reached the NCAA Second Round last season, NCAA Third Round in 2011,

    the NCAA Final Four in 2010, made the NCAA Tournament in 2009, reached the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2008, won the NIT

    in 2007, reached the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2006 and made it to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2005.

    In 1958, the Mountaineers finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in both polls and in 1959, West Virginia, led byAll-America guard Jerry West, lost in the NCAA finals to California.

    West Virginia has had 10 first team All-Americans, headlined by West, who went on to become one of

    basketballs all-time greats with the NBAs Los Angeles Lakers.

    Kevin Pittsnogle became WVUs first All-American in 34 years when he was named to the John Wooden All-Americateam in 2006.

    Most recently, DaSean Butler earned All-America first team honors in 2010 by John Wooden and Basketball TimesandKevin Jones earned All-America first team honors in 2012 by John Wooden.

    Winning Non-Conference Mark West Virginia has posted a winning non-conference mark for the 21st consecutive season.

    West Virginia is 90-23 against non-conference teams in regular season games in the last nine seasons.

    The last time WVU did not post a winning non-league record was 1990-91, when WVU went 4-4 outside of

    conference play.

    WVU is 59-17 in non-conference games under Bob Huggins.

    WVU has finished with one loss during non-conference play in six different seasons. They were: 1981-82 when West

    Virginia went 11-1 out of the Atlantic 10, 1957-58 when WVU lost only to Duke in going 11-1, 1996-97 when the Mountain-

    Academic Success Twenty-four of the last 25 senior members of the WVU mens basketball team have graduated on time or early

    since 2004.

    This year, Kevin Noreen was named to the Academic All-Big 12 Mens Basketball first team while Juwan Staten wasnamed to the second team.

    Three members of the 2010-11 team earned their bachelor and masters degrees while playing at WVU: Joe MazzullaCam Thoroughman and Jonnie West.

    Last year, WVU had 11 players on the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll with a 3.0 GPA or better.

    In 2010, WVU received the Team Excellence award from the Big East for the highest cumulative grade pointaverage among Big East mens basketball teams.

    In 2010 and 2011, WVU mens basketball was also recognized nationally for ranking in the top 10 percent

    nationally among mens basketball programs for the Academic Progress Rate (APR).

    In October 2012, the mens basketball team had a 100 percent Graduation Success Rate (GSR) score in the NCAAs

    latest annual release during the 2002-03 to the 2005-06 period.

    Huggins Announces Recruiting Class Bob Huggins announced in November that four student-athletes signed a national letter of intent for the 2013-14

    academic year.

    They are Nathan Adrian (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown HS), Elijah Macon (Columbus, Ohio/Brewster Academy

    [N.H.]), Brandon Watkins (Decatur, Ga./Grady HS) and Devin Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio/Montverde Academy [Fla.]).

    Adrian, a 6-foot-8 forward, is in his senior year at Morgantown High. As a junior, he averaged 19.4 points and 10.6rebounds, earning Class AAA First Team All-State honors. Adrian was also named to the Two Rivers Athletic

    Conference (TRAC) Player of the Year and captain of the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference (OVAC) Class 5A First Team.

    Macon, a 6-foot-9 power forward, is attending Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H. Last year, he attendedHuntington Prep and averaged 15 points and nine rebounds per game. Macon was ranked as the No. 1 junior

    prospect in the state of Ohio by Ohio Prep Spotlight.

    Watkins, a 6-foot-9 forward, is in his senior year at Grady High. As a junior, he averaged 19 points and 14 reboundsper game, earning All-Metro Atlanta Second Team honors and Georgia Class AAA All-State Second Team honors.

    Williams, a 6-foot-8 forward, attends Montverde Academy in Montverde, Fla. Last year at Withrow High in Cincinnatihe averaged 15.2 points and 10.5 rebounds, earning All-Cincinnati Metro Athletic Conference First Team honors.

    Williams is ranked as a Top 100 recruit by Scout, Rivals and ESPN.
