Dear Neighbor,

You, along with many others like you in our community, exemplify Samaritan House’s mission of “neighbor helping neighbor.” You have stepped up and helped those who are most at risk of being without housing, food, clothing, and healthcare during times of personal economic crisis.

We are excited to celebrate your generosity in this Annual Report, created to recognize our many financial investors. Samaritan House has grown over the last 39 years to match the growing needs of our community. The economic disparities have grown as the region has prospered, and many struggle day-to-day to meet the high cost of living in the area. Today, rent for a one-bedroom apartment in San Mateo County averages $2,000 a month, while the minimum wage continues to be $8 an hour.

While we are happy for those who have benefited from our improving economic climate, our work continues to be helping those who are not as fortunate. Many of our clients are “the working poor,” and are one paycheck away from homelessness. All it takes is a major medical emergency or the loss of a job and their world turns upside down.

As we approach our 40th anniversary, Samaritan House is focusing on developing programs to help our low-income neighbors attain greater self-sufficiency and self-reliance. This spring, for the second year, we provided tax preparation services for our clients in partnership with United Way of the Bay Area. In addition, we are now offering one-on-one financial coaching classes to help families learn how to minimize debt, build savings, and improve their credit scores. These services are in addition to the free assistance we provide to our qualified neighbors through our client services, kitchen and pantry programs, two medical and dental clinics, Worker Resource Center, Kids’ Closet, and Safe Harbor Shelter.

In April, we launched our new website, providing quick and easy information about our services, a list of volunteer opportunities, and a simpler way to make online donations. We have built our social media presence to stay better connected with our supporters in real time and hope in the future to build our technology capabilities further to guide and assist our clients online.

We know the future will continue to bring challenges to many among us. Together we will continue to provide the support needed to meet essential daily needs. Many thanks for helping us build a brighter future for everyone in our community.

The generosity of Samaritan House’s donors has allowed us to widen our role in the community.

From health care to free tax preparation to emergency shelter services, Samaritan House’s programs continue to grow. Here are some ways your contributions made an impact in our community this past year:

TAx PREPARATIoN: In 2013, Samaritan House filed 276 tax returns, bringing over $304,000 back into our community in tax refunds. FooD ASSISTANCE: Through our Mobile Meals program, 13,416 nutritious, hot dinners were delivered from our kitchen to housebound seniors and disabled individuals.

SAFE HARBoR SHElTER: 413 homeless individuals received referrals to local facilities for treatment and prevention of life-impacting health and psychological issues.

MEDICAl & DENTAl ClINICS: 9,436 uninsured, low-income residents received medical and dental services through our free clinics in San Mateo and Redwood City. HolIDAY ASSISTANCE: 839 families received food through special distributions serving families in November and December. This is in addition to the meals and groceries we provide every day, year-round from our kitchen, pantry, and shelter.

Jeffrey Reeder originally came to Samaritan House seeking rental assistance and met with case manager Julio Campos. Laid off from his job in 2012, he found himself unable to find work and without health insurance. During one of Jeffery’s appointments with Julio, he mentioned that he had been suffering from dental issues for years, but was never able to afford the work that he feared was necessary. Julio scheduled an appointment for Jeffrey to be seen at the San Mateo Clinic for a dental exam and routine physical checkup.

His checkup went well, but it had been over 30 years since Jeffery had been to a dentist before walking through the doors of the Samaritan House’s clinic. The doctors diagnosed Jeffrey with an untreated periodontal disease, which was causing his teeth to fall out.

clinic began by extracting Jeffrey’s teeth earlier this summer and fitting him with a set of dentures. He believes it would have been years before he had gotten the dental treatment he needed without Samaritan House.

This August, Jeffrey came in for his final denture fitting. He reports that he feels like his life has turned around, and he finds himself filled with hope for the first time in years. Since first coming to Samaritan House, Jeffery has received a part-time job at a recycling center in San Carlos and he will be interviewing soon for full-time employment.

“Talking to people before, I was ashamed of the way I looked,” Jeffery explains. He states that he had grown his beard to cover his mouth. After receiving his dentures, he plans on shaving so people can see his brand new smile.

Alandra* first came to Samaritan House this summer seeking short-term help paying her rent. She had been receiving unemployment, but found that she needed a little extra help while she waited for an extension of her benefits. “The job market is still very challenging around here,” Alandra explains. “As a single mother, when I’m not cooking or cleaning for my 3 kids, I am looking for work.”

Having immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico nearly 10 years ago, Alandra spent the last few years working as a home health care provider. When her last position ended, she found herself struggling to pay her bills and without family members in the area to turn to for assistance. “I’ve never had to ask for help before, so when it happened, I didn’t know where to go,” says Alandra. She was referred to Samaritan House and met with her case manager, Marlen Castillo, who talked with Alandra about her circumstances. After Marlen evaluated her case, Alandra was given emergency rental assistance and vouchers for Samaritan House’s food pantry for the next two months to help stabilize her family’s financial situation. Alandra also received shoes and clothing gift cards for her children as they returned to school this fall. She explains that the help she received has meant fewer bills to pay so she could begin to start saving for the next month.

“The extra help has made it possible to start planning for my family’s future,” Alandra was very happy to report. looking forward, she continues her job search but has set her sights on starting a nursing program at a local college. “I love working with people and helping them,” Alandra says. “For me, that’s how I want to give back.”

Since moving into our new building in 2009, we have been able to expand our services to the community. We have seen the following increases:

A spacious client service department increased individual and family visits by 183%, as case managers provided safety net services, including food vouchers, emergency shelter, clothing, temporary rental assistance, transportation passes, tax preparation services, and counseling
