New Exhibit—How Does It Work?

This interdisciplinary exhibit of history and science, created in conjunction with Tuttle Middle School students, will run through the end of 2013. Featuring displays created by the students, this exhibit explains how many common, and some not so common items function. It also highlights

objects from the recent past, such as the rotary dial telephone, and things that we often take for granted such as the disposable diaper and pneumatic tube. Over 45 displays demonstrate and explain the history and workings of the items and there are many hands on activities for all ages. The logo for the exhibit, was also designed by a Tuttle Student.

Greta Binford a.k.a. Spider Lady

A professor of Biology at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, Greta Binford specializes in Arachnology, the study of spiders. Greta graduated from North Montgomery High School in 1983, then obtained her B.A. from Miami University. She then received her M.S. from the University of Utah and her Ph.D. from the University of Arizona in 2000. Binford joined the Lewis & Clark’s biology faculty in 2003 and

encourages her students to learn about themselves while studying other species and continuously engages her students in scientific inquiry. The Carnegie Museum is featuring Greta and her work in the museum during the 2013 season. The exhibit will focus on Greta, her general field of Biology, and her specific research on spiders. The book Silk & Venom highlights Greta’s research and her quest to learn more about spiders.

2012 Annual Report

2012 was a very busy year for the Carnegie Museum, with a total of 4,844 visitors through the museum, the highest visitation to date. 2012 Program Highlights: The museum hosted the fourth annual Pi Day and fourth annual Brain Day in collaboration with Wabash College, both with great turnouts. The fourth annual Summer at the Museum also had great community participation. In the Fall, the Carnegie Museum participated in the second annual downtown Crawfordsville Art Walk on Washington, which included five other venues downtown. In addition to these annual programs, new programs included the Food for Thought program and book signing, a celebration and commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of Title IX and the museum’s first ever Spin In, which featured and demonstrated the art of spinning fibers. 2012 Exhibit Highlights: * Agriculture: The Cultivation of Montgomery County—this exhibit was a true community collaboration and a great success because of all of the help and items we received. * A featured exhibit on famed author Janet Lambert and her family * Historic Post Office Murals exhibit from the Indiana Historical Society * Selections from the 88th Annual Hoosier Salon * Crawfordsville Elementary and Middle School “Elements of Art” Art Show
