Report to the Community
2013
Dear Friends and Supporters,
According to 2013 Volunteering and Civic Life in America by the Corporation for National and Com-munity Service, 64.5 million, or 26.5% of Americans volunteered nearly 7.9 billion hours last year in a formal organization. The estimated value of this volunteer service is nearly $175 billion, based on the Independent Sector’s estimate of the average value of a volunteer hour. We are privileged to live in a community that is known for its
generosity of spirit when it comes to volunteering.
Let’s put Jacksonville in context by comparing ourselves with the nation as a whole, with Florida as a whole, and with our three large sister cities in Florida. In Jacksonville our volun-teer rate is 30% and that puts us in 15th place among the 51 largest cities in the US. Remember, America’s overall volun-teer rate was 26.5% so we are already looking good in that comparison.
Now let’s look at Florida where 21.4% of Floridians volunteer, ranking the sunshine state 48th. And finally, let’s take a look at the three other largest cities in Florida: Tampa, where 23.1% of residents volunteer, ranking them 43rd; Orlando, where 18.6% volunteer, ranking them 48th; and Miami, where 15.3% volunteer, ranking them 51st. And if we factor in our local statistics, collected for decades by JCCI through their Quality of Life Progress Report, we will find that 65% volunteer, a sig-nificantly higher number than the national data because the definition of “volunteering” is much broader. No matter how we slice it, Jacksonville stands out with our culture of caring.
So that’s our story, and we’re sticking to it! We’re also sticking to our beliefs that each of us has the power to change lives; that all successful lives include service to others; that service bridges our differences and can bring us together; and that what unites us in our humanity is far more powerful than what divides us. And we’re sticking to our story that we have a little something to do with the amazing volunteering ethic in Northeast Florida!

In April, during National Volunteer Week, Florida Volunteer Month and Jacksonville Volunteer Appreciation Month, HandsOn Jacksonville selects members of the community who do exemplary volunteer work to honor and tell their stories. This fun and inspiring evening begins with a beautifully produced video presentation telling the stories of the amazing work volunteers are doing in our community. It continues with a lively party including food from some of the best local restaurants, live music, silent auction and the opportunity to personally meet the people who are selflessly touching our community for GOOD!

We Inspire
JT Townsend was our HandsOn Willing and Able award recipient at Celebrate!GOOD 2013. Just two short months later, in June, JT passed away. We remember his engaging smile, his unrelenting passion to not allow a disability to keep him from making a difference, and most of all the fun he had during his time in the spotlight. JT exemplified the very best in giving back to his community, and we were honored to honor him.
JT Townsend, Jr. was a senior at Episcopal High School in 2004 when he was hit on the football field and suffered a near-fatal spinal injury. After undergoing multiple surgeries and months of physical therapy, JT was ready to return home, but his home was not wheelchair ac-cessible. Moved by his story, pro golfer Fred Funk, with the help of his fans, decided to build a wheelchair accessible home for JT.
This act of kindness touched JT who became determined to repay his community by paying it forward. With less than two years in exis-tence as a 501c3 nonprofit, The JT Townsend Foundation has been able to help over 40 people on the First Coast by providing more than $90,000 in adaptive equipment and financial assistance.
The JT Townsend Foundation’s mission is to help adults and children living on the First Coast with disabilities with adaptive equipment or financial assistance and fund spinal cord injury research.
JT’s legacy continues through the JT Townsend Foundation, and he will be remembered as his important work goes on.
