Your story is our legacy. In all its 160 years of service to the Greater Cleveland community, the YMCA of Greater Cleveland has never been about the brick and mortar; it’s been about people. Throughout this publication, you’ll get to know some of those people. And for those you don’t, just stop in to your local YMCA. You’ll meet them there. And we bet they can’t wait to tell you their story. board lists
letter Glenn HaleyPresident and Chief Executive Officer
Clark L. FitzgibbonsChairman, Board of Directors
One of the things that always speaks volumes about our organization is the connection that we make with people. Everywhere we go, it seems that someone has a Y story to tell. Perhaps they learned to swim at the Y…or they attended summer camp as a child…or maybe they are trying to shed a few pounds and come to us to help them in that effort.
In this Annual Report you’ll see example stories that tell our larger tale. They are a representation of what the YMCA of Greater Cleveland is all about, and how we take our mission, and commitment to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility more seriously than ever before.
Inside, those stories are about nurturing the potential of youth through lunchtime mentoring and after-school education programs. They are stories about our unique Lifeguard Academy program which prepares local students to become certified lifeguards and save lives on a daily basis. You will read about the success of individuals participating in our nationwide YMCA Diabetes Prevention program, and our groundbreaking efforts at chronic disease prevention. You’ll also meet families who trust the Y’s Pre-School program to give their children a head start on education while at the same time preparing them for kindergarten readiness.
Inside you’ll also meet a few of our many members who have unique accomplishments and a passion for serving others, like Lakewood resident Katie Spotz, a world-renowned individual who became the youngest person to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean.
Thank you for helping us build and sustain such an important legacy in the Northeast Ohio region. Your personal and individual stories continue to bring meaning and depth to each of our lives. It remains our pleasure to continue fostering that legacy —with your help — each day.
BELIEVING IN POTENTIAL
Every Thursday, Downtown YMCA Branch Director Laura Floyd has a lunch date with her “lunch buddy,” Ivori, a 12-year-old student at a nearby elementary school.
The Lunch Buddies program offers an adult presence in the life of a child who could benefit from positive recognition and additional individual attention from a caring adult.
The pair typically share lunch over a game of Scrabble while discussing what’s going on in their lives.
“Ivori has really made progress since we met. Now she is excited about her school work and the grades she gets,” Laura says.
The pair share a love for reading. “I hope to continue to mentor her through elementary school and further,” she
A lunch buddy gives Ivori the support she needs to stay focused in school — and plan for her future.
added. “It is very important for adults to reach out to our younger generation and provide them extra support to prepare them for their future.”
On this particular lunch visit pictured below, Ivori shared with Laura her aspirations of becoming a lawyer. “I get to talk a lot, and help people with their problems,” said the sixth-grader.
Ivori enjoys the time she gets to spend with Laura each week. “I like being there because Ms. Laura brings cards or games to play. She talks about her three kids,” she said.
“I feel comfortable talking to Ms. Laura. I started to do better in class because she always tells me to get my grades up,” she said.
Laura beamed with pride. Her young friend had gone from being shy and uncertain to setting goals for herself and working toward how to get there. Ivori even has a college picked out — the same one Laura’s son attended.
In late 2013, the YMCA of Greater Cleveland was
awarded a grant from Y-USA to pilot an after-school enrichment program. “This program will ensure children in the city of Cleveland receive the additional time and attention they need to fulfill their potential in school,” said Laura Floyd. The program, set to begin in Fall 2014, will provide academic enrichment for children in grades K-5 falling behind in school. The school Ivori attends will offer the program.
“Every time I go to get her from the lunch room she just lights up. I treat her
as if she was my own child. I like hearing about her plans for
the future.”-Laura Floyd

LEARNING LIFE-SAVING SKILLS
After a near-drowning experience at a hotel pool when he was in third grade, high school senior Justyn Jarvis learned to swim and has stayed involved with swimming activities ever since.
“I knew I had to learn how to stay safe in the water,” he said.
When Justyn was 16, he enrolled in the Lifeguard Academy offered by the YMCA of Greater Cleveland. He graduated from the program and was immediately employed by the Y, now serving as a lifeguard, pool supervisor, and head swim site coach for the East Side Stingrays Swim Team.
In March 2013, the KeyBank Foundation awarded $150,000 in grant funding to allow approximately 100 young people to participate in the program at the Downtown, Euclid, West Park-Fairview and Warrensville Heights Family YMCAs.
The funding provides dollars for the three-year duration of the program.
Upon completion of the program, participants will be qualified for
employment in various fields.
“We are committed to continue working with students in the program – even those who do not graduate,” said Association Aquatics Core Service Leader Gary Guzy.
“Both the Euclid and West Park-Fairview branches of the YMCA of Greater Cleveland are shining examples of how well the program works,” Guzy said.
The Lifeguard Academy program is designed especially to help develop swimming skills in the Hispanic/Latino and African American populations of Greater Cleveland, which, according to national statistics, are more prone to drowning accidents than the rest of the population.
What’s next for Jusytn? After graduation in June, he plans to take his life-saving skills to the United States Air Force.
The Lifeguard Academy gave Justyn the skills he needed to learn how to save lives.
In 2013, the YMCA of Greater Cleveland trained and certified over 400 lifeguards. 61 of them were Lifeguard Academy participants.
The Lifeguard Academy teaches young people to swim and allows them to become certified American Red Cross Lifeguards with additional certifications in First Aid, CPR, and AED.

AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION
9
The YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program gave Steve the power to say “not me” when it comes to type 2 diabetes. Overweight and spending most of his time sedentary and in front of the TV, Steve Wolotsky decided to do something about his lifestyle — for good.
“I had reached a point in life where I felt like I had nowhere to go but down,” he said.
Steve learned about the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program, which offers a year-long lifestyle balance program that encourages a modest amount of weight loss, learning about healthy food options, increased physical activity, and most of all — how to avoid type II diabetes, a chronic disease that affects over 26 million people every year.
After meeting the eligibility requirements, Steve began walking on the treadmill in his condo’s exercise room. He soon began to see results.
“I went from doing absolutely nothing to 50 minutes a day on the treadmill,” he said.
He saw his blood sugar levels lower and his energy increase. Prior to beginning the program, Steve had knee problems and had trouble walking at times. After starting to exercise the ailments “seemed to heal themselves.”
A few months into the program, Steve took a trip to Israel and walked almost 10 miles one day.
“I would have never been able to do that before,” he said, “I felt great afterwards.”
Steve also began to make smarter food choices. Before beginning the program, he had no idea what sort of fat content was found in cheeses and oily spreads such as mayonnaise. So now, it’s all in moderation.
During the Thanksgiving season, he said that he gained five pounds, but lost them all in the following weeks by returning to the plan he created in the program.
At the time of publication, Steve had lost a total of 29 pounds in the five months that he’s been under the guidance of the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program certified Lifestyle Coach and his physician.
“I feel that this program has saved my life in many ways,” he said.
1 IN 3 PEOPLE IS PRE-DIABETIC.
IS IT YOU? More people die from diabetes-related complications than from breast cancer and lung cancer — combined.
The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is the most evidence-based
diabetes prevention program in the world with high success rates in preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes — 58% for adults of all ages and 71% for those individuals over age 60.
At the time of publication, the YMCA of Greater Cleveland facilitated twenty-five year-long class series — 10 are at some point of the sixteen weekly core
sessions and 15 are in monthly maintenance or totally completed.
In 2009, research assessments by the Centers for Disease Control determined the following statistics surrounding chronic disease in three of the counties within the YMCA of Greater Cleveland’s service area:
DIABETES BY THE NUMBERS
COUNTY % DIABETIC % OBESE
GEAUGA 9.7% 24.4%
CUYAHOGA 10.7% 28.1%
LORAIN 11.5% 32.1%

It’s something no parent ever wishes to hear from their child, “Could you please find me some friends?”
John and Elaine Mellody could not refuse their four-year-old daughter Jordan’s request. The Mellodys live in a neighborhood with no other children their daughter’s age, and they weren’t quite sure where to look.
They first tried a dance class at an arts facility, but experienced disappointment when they felt their daughter was treated different for being part of a bi-racial family.
The answer, however, was at their local YMCA.
Jordan joined her father on a visit to the Hillcrest Family YMCA in Lyndhurst where he is a member.
“We were sitting at the tables near the front desk and I must have said something to Debbie Payner {YMCA Membership Representative} about Jordan wanting to color,” he said.
“She immediately copied four pages of a coloring book, and brought out a plastic container of crayons in every shade.”
John was impressed by the front desk staff’s caring nature and their willingness to go out of the way for his daughter.
“There is no problem with acceptance here, no one was better than the other, because it seemed we were all family,” he said.
John and Elaine were equally excited to learn that lead teacher Miss Jane is a licensed teacher and that Jordan had soon learned to sound out her alphabet and was learning to read and write.
Small things mattered too, like the fact that Miss Jane sent home a daily report card.
Now five-years-old, Jordan has made good friends in her class and she enjoys school so much that she doesn’t want to leave at the end of the day.
“We have met the goal of finding friends and she wants to get more involved in swimming classes, basketball, and other activities, he said. “
We are grateful that the Hillcrest YMCA has welcomed us into their family.”
When it came time to choose a Pre-School for Jordan, her parents were thrilled to discover that the Y offered just what they were looking for.
“I was convinced that she attend the pre-school here. This has gone beyond our best expectations.” - John Mellody, father of Pre-Schooler Jordan
The YMCA of Greater Cleveland has over 20 child care sites, including Infant and Toddler Care, Pre-School, Before-and-After-School care, and Summer Day Camp. In 2013, the Y served 2,267 children through these various programs.

MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

What does it take to row across an ocean, run through a desert, cycle across America, and swim the length of a river? Katie Spotz knows — because she’s done it. When you first meet Katie Spotz, you can’t help but notice how down-to-Earth she is.
You probably would be too if you spent 70 days solo-rowing across the Atlantic. In 2010, at the age of 22, the Mentor native was the youngest person in history to row across the Atlantic ocean alone.
Now a Lakewood resident, she spends several days a week swimming and strength training at the Lakewood Family YMCA in preparation for her next adventure.
When it comes to the local Y, Katie says, “It’s nice being around people who share the same passion for health and wellness.”
She adds that her journey toward the Atlantic and toward extreme endurance started on the bench in high school.
“I was a benchwarmer most of my life growing up. I held the belief that I couldn’t do super-big challenges. It wasn’t until I was 18 when I did a running/walking class. I started running, adding a few more miles each week. That’s when I decided to do a marathon,” she said.
“That’s inspired me to try all these different challenges: cycling across America, swimming the 325-mile Allegheny river, running across deserts, and the Atlantic of course. Now I’m doing Ironman.”
“You don’t have to be extraordinary to achieve incredible things.” - Katie Spotz
After completing these adventures, Katie says she would think, “I told myself I could never do that. And I did it. What are the other things I told myself I couldn’t do?”
But, how exactly does one decide to row an ocean — alone?
“The decision really found me. I was in Australia at the time doing an ultra-marathon (100k or 62 miles). I was sitting on a bus chatting with a guy next to me who said his friend rowed across the Atlantic. I tried to ignore the idea; but knew I had to do it too,” she recalls. “I didn’t want to live my life wondering ‘what if?’
“There were really tough moments,” she recalls, “but I could only go a moment-at-a-time. Endurance is about mind — it’s about heart and passion you put into it.”
Listen to our interview with Katie Spotz and learn more about the cause behind her adventures at ClevelandYMCA.org.

Dale Vonderau, a revered Y volunteer and former Chair of the YMCA of the USA (Y-USA) Board of Directors, passed away on March 9, 2014, in his hometown of Rocky River, Ohio. He was 89.
Dale’s extraordinary career as a Y volunteer leader and supporter of the global movement
began in the 1950s as a fundraiser for international work for the Y’s Service Club in Cleveland. He joined the YMCA of Greater Cleveland Board of Directors in 1969 and received the Association’s Distinguished Service Award in 1982. Dale was an Emeritus Member of the Y-USA board and served as Board Chair from 1981-1983. He also served as a member of the YMCA Retirement Fund Board of Trustees. In 2003, Dale received the Harold C. Smith Award for distinguished service to the Y Movement. An esteemed adviser to the YMCA of the USA International Group, Dale worked tirelessly to develop globally minded leaders and strengthen the sustainability and impact of YMCAs in Asia, Africa, Eastern and Western Europe, the Middle East and Latin America. He was Chair of both the Y-USA International Committee and the YMCA World Service Campaign, and he also was a leader in the YMCA Europe Field Group for Russia, successfully helping to rebuild the Y Movement in Russia after the end of the Soviet Union. In addition, he served as International Director of Y’s Men’s International Service Club. At the World Alliance of YMCAs, Dale served on the Executive Committee and
the Finance Committee from 1977 to 1988. The Y-USA International Committee recognized Dale with its highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award, in 1980.
Dale was instrumental in re-establishing the relationship between Y-USA and the Chinese YMCA as it emerged from a revolution and cultural transformation in the late 1970s and 1980s. For many years, Dale led Y-USA’s effort to strengthen the newly developing and re-emerging Ys in Eastern Europe in collaboration with the European Alliance of YMCAs. Leading by example, Dale helped raise major financial and technical resources for YMCA World Service and made countless presentations on the importance of this life-changing work. When asked about his global vision, Dale stated, “Our real future for building a strong world YMCA depends on our volunteer advancement and broadening our corps of volunteer involvement in the global Movement.” His was always an enthusiastic voice for encouraging more volunteers to get involved and “broaden their perspective of the work of the YMCA.” Dale’s career outside the Y was just as impressive. After serving as a bombardier in the Philippines in World War II, he returned home to earn a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Finance and a master’s degree in business administration from Case-Western Reserve University. At The Alloy Engineering Company in Cleveland, he served as president from 1960 to 1974 and culminated his career as Chairman of the Board. Dale and his wife, Patricia, who passed away in April 2013, had two children and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The 2013 Annual Report is dedicated to longtime Y leader, Dale Vonderau.
Thank you, Dale, for making your story part of the Y’s legacy.
