2. Presidential Address

Welcome to the 2013 Annual General Meeting of the Woodsworth College Students’ Association. Today, I am pleased to report to you, on behalf of the entire board, the activity of the association over the last 11 months.

The 2012-2013 year has been tremendously exciting and extremely successful in a number of respects. This year can be characterized in two distinct aspects: successful student based events/initiatives and important internal restructuring. As the Association grows year after year, we have seen a number of Woodsworth traditions develop. These traditions are well represented in our social portfolio that now includes highly anticipated annual events such as Streetcar Pub Crawl and Red Party. Our two largest social events, Orientation and Gala, were more successful this year than ever before. Both events implemented formal and structured management committees this year that not only played a large role in the success of the events but also allowed students to get involved in new and unique ways.

The Athletics portfolio has also seen resounding successes with traditions including the Ski Trip and Super Bowl party both well attended. The External Portfolio has also seen sustained growth that is promising for future years to come. Both the external and athletics portfolios have also restructured their end of year award banquets in order to maximize recognition of hardworking club executives and intramural athletes. In terms of Public Relations we have reintroduced a twice-yearly survey to ensure that we are listening to our membership and adapting appropriately. For example, we learned that many students would like us to make better use of our newsletter system.

Mature Students are a significant part of Woodsworth College’s population and I am pleased with their representation on WCSA this year. Our relationship with MatSA has seen successful events such as the Mature Student’s Weekend and the upcoming year-end banquet. However, more work needs to be done to ensure mature students are receiving as much attention as other students from the association. MatSA, in particular, has grown tremendously over the past four years. The current president of MatSA and have agreed that a new framework for

collaboration between WCSA and MatSA should be a high priority for both incoming boards to ensure continued success.

While the student facing efforts I have outlined have been very successful this year, there has also been a significant amount of internal work to ensure that WCSA is fair, transparent and sustainable for years to come. Specifically the drafting of a Hiring Policy in the summer has and will continue to ensure that the association employs fair and transparent hiring practices. With the increase in hired positions on the board hiring policies have been imperative in the smooth and successful hiring process. In the winter semester both the hiring policies and the election policies have been amended, after being used a number of times, to ensure that they are comprehensive in covering all aspects of hiring and elections.

This year has also seen the introduction of several new positions to the

board. Academic Bridging Students’ Director, Associate Directors in Athletics, Social and Public Relations were all added to the board, as well as doubling the representation of Mature Students on the board. The integration of the new positions has gone very well with each new position able to either forge a new path for that portfolio or supplement the existing one. These new positions have allowed for WCSA to reach out to an even broader base of students than in previous years and ensure that as we grow we are able to maintain the high quality of our events and services. The board has also implemented a new concept of small focus groups to ensure that both directors and executives have a clear line of communication. This has been successful and allowed for an increase in both quantity and quality of Director initiatives in the winter semester.

In addition, the board, and in particular our Vice President of Financial Affairs has worked hard to get WCSA’s finances firmly back on track. At last years AGM no audited financial documents were presented to the membership. I am pleased to report that we will be presenting these documents (2010-11) today and the following years are currently with the auditor (2011-12) and will be returned soon. In addition, policies and procedures have been implemented to prevent similar financial mishaps in the future.

As I am sure many of you are aware there have been significant and serious developments in campus wide politics this year. A number of colleges have recently held referendums on fee diversion from the University of Toronto

Students’ Union. As president of this Association I have sat on the St George Round Table with a number of these college and faculty presidents and have monitored the developments closely. WCSA has so far chosen to take a cautious stance on this issue to ensure our students are receiving the best representation at all levels of student government. As an association we did endorse a non-partisan document on electoral reform within the UTSU; we chose to endorse the document because we wanted to ensure Woodsworth student's voices are heard in a fair manner at a university-wide level. Certainly, it is an interesting time in university politics and something that the next President will have to monitor closely.

I am extremely proud of the success this year’s board has achieved.

Through hard work and dedication we have managed to ensure that each year WCSA continues to grow. This year we have seen what I believe to be WCSA’s strongest year yet. However, I do think there is always room for improvement and I am confident that next years board will succeed in topping this years work. I look forward to see what the future has in store!
