Improving Health Care Quality through Accreditation

Seeking Accreditation but Don’t Know Where to Start?Maybe your organization has taken the first step - completed the accreditation application and needs to prepare for the survey. Or you added a new member to your staff and want to bring them up to speed. Or perhaps you’re not quite there yet and want to learn what accreditation is all about. In every case, we can help.

For 34 years, the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) has been setting the standard for accreditation in ambulatory health care. In primary care. In managed care. So whether you’re a newbie to the process or a veteran preparing for reaccreditation, the AAAHC Achieving Accreditation Seminar will guide you through the steps in a clear, easy-to-follow method.

We’ll show you how to prepare for an accreditation survey; how to meet AAAHC nationally-recognized Standards; how to make your quality improvement (QI) program more effective. In short, we’ll take the mystery out of the whole process.

Why Accreditation is Right for Your OrganizationAAAHC accreditation is a visible sign of your dedication to patient safety and quality care – not only to those involved in health care delivery and management but also to the general public, third party payers and regulators. More than 5,300 organizations are already realizing the benefits of AAAHC accreditation. With the trend in state regulation increasing every year, your organization should definitely be one of them.

Plan on attending if you:

• are considering AAAHC accreditation for your practice or organization.

• need specific help on the most recent AAAHC Standards and how to comply with them.

• are starting a new practice and want to be competitive in the marketplace.

• have new staff who will be handling the accreditation process.

• want to meet AAAHC Standards relating to quality improvement (QI).

For our March Seminar, we’ve added a separate Health Plan/Managed Care Accreditation Program.

AAAHC accreditation will not only boost your organization’s prestige; it will also demonstrate the quality of your providers and show your members that they made an excellent choice in their health plan. And with brand new Standards for 2013, this is a program health plan executives should not miss!

About the ProgramAchieving Accreditation is an in-depth, interactive program designed to give you the knowledge and skills you need to prepare for the actual AAAHC accreditation survey. Whether you’re applying for accreditation for the first time or preparing for re-accreditation, this seminar can help you understand the applicable AAAHC Standards, policies and procedures to get the most from your survey experience.

The program is led by highly-experienced AAAHC surveyors who will take you through the Standards and how to create effective quality improvement (QI) studies. You’ll also learn how QI studies can increase productivity, patient satisfaction and financial performance.

The elective sessions focus on topics important to both surgical/procedural and primary care organizations. ASCs can learn about Medicare Deemed Status process for ASCs and Medicare’s requirement for compliance with the Life Safety Code. Primary care organizations considering becoming Medical Homes will want to attend both of the Medical Home sessions. First-time AAAHC accreditation seekers will learn what AAAHC can do for them. And you’ll all want to hear from our surveyors and staff about how to prepare for an AAAHC survey.

About AAAHCThe Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care was established in 1979 to advance and promote patient safety, quality of care and measurement of performance. A private, non-profit organization, we’ve developed a wide-spread reputation as an advocate of high-quality health care and over a span of 34 years have become the leader in ambulatory health care accreditation.

AAAHC is focused on providing quality accreditation programs for the ambulatory health care community. Our Standards are designed and surveys conducted by health care professionals with extensive experience in the ambulatory arena. Our peer-based review system allows for a collaborative and consultative approach that is flexible and adaptable to the specific needs of any ambulatory health care organization. AAAHC accreditation is both a welcome educational experience and visible proof of your dedication to quality patient care.

Day one: The Friday morning session provides a comprehensive review of the Accreditation Association Core Standards and how to prepare your organization to meet them. Friday afternoon focuses on the topic of quality improvement (QI). In small group sessions by practice setting, highly experienced AAAHC surveyors will lead you through the review of sample quality improvement (QI) studies and explore QI topic selection. You’ll learn how to develop QI studies within your own organization: how to set performance goals, measure your performance, and take corrective actions to improve performance. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask specific questions, share concerns and offer feedback.

Day two: On Saturday morning, you’ll meet with AAAHC faculty and your peers in either the surgical/procedural or primary care environment to discuss the Standards as they apply to your setting. The discussion of the Infection Prevention and Control Standards includes an opportunity to ask questions of a Certified Infection Control (CIC) professional. This session also includes a review of AAAHC Adjunct Standards most frequently applied to organizations like yours; our expert surveyors will provide you with what you need to know to achieve compliance with these Standards. In the afternoon, you have the opportunity to tailor the program to your specific needs and interests by attending up to three information-packed elective sessions.

Page 5: 2013 2013 AA...2013 Achieving Accreditation Educational Seminars You know how good your organization is. But that’s not enough, is it? You want your peers to recognize just how good

On Saturday afternoon immediately following the main Achieving Accreditation program, you can select from the following important topics:

Medical Home

This two-part session is for primary care organizations considering accreditation or on-site certification as a Medical Home, and for organizations that have already begun to implement the Medical Home practice model. In Part One, learn or review the AAAHC Standards for Medical Homes which are based on the principles of accessibility, quality, relationship, and continuity and comprehensiveness of care. Part Two of the session offers tested solutions to overcoming the challenges of becoming a Medical Home, including a panel discussion with your peers on the journey to transform their practices into patient-centered Medical Homes.

Understanding Medicare Deemed Status for ASCs

Ambulatory surgery centers choosing to combine their AAAHC accreditation survey with their review for compliance with the Medicare Conditions for Coverage won’t want to miss this session! A deemed status survey has different rules and requirements, and this session helps you navigate them. It’s packed with information and resources to help you prepare and apply for – and succeed during – a deemed status survey.

Life Safety Code Requirements for Medicare Certified ASCs

Whether your Medicare certified ASC is in the AAAHC deemed status program or not, it is required to comply with the requirements of the 2000 edition of the NFPA 101® Life Safety Code®. Determining how to meet these requirements can appear to be a daunting task, so this session is designed to clarify exactly what you need to do to meet many of the major requirements.

Why Select AAAHC as Your Accreditor?

If you are in the process of choosing an accreditor for your organization, attend this session to learn what AAAHC can do for you. Compare the benefits of AAAHC accreditation to your other options, and learn why AAAHC should become your accreditor. Note: this session is offered twice: once for surgical/procedural organizations, and once for organizations that provide primary care services.

How to Prepare for an AAAHC Survey

This session explains the survey process from A to Z: how and when to submit an application for survey; how and when surveys are scheduled; AAAHC staff members who will assist your organization through the application and survey scheduling processes. From experienced surveyors, learn what to expect during the survey itself, and what you can do to help ensure that the on-site survey goes smoothly. This session will also help you understand what happens after your survey and the steps you should take to maintain compliance until your next survey. Note: this session is offered twice so that everyone has an opportunity to attend.

The Chat Room

Have a question that the sessions did not answer? Need to clarify something you heard in another session? As your last stop during the Achieving Accreditation program, come to the Chat Room to ask any last-minute questions. This is not a structured presentation, but an opportunity for individual consultation with AAAHC surveyors and staff. You do not need to pre-register for this session, but individual discussions are limited to ten minutes if other attendees are waiting.

See the complete agenda on the following page.

2013Previous attendees really liked the updated format allowing more time to network, so we’re continuing to keep meal times free for meeting with your colleagues. We’ve also made a few tweaks to the special topic sessions on Saturday afternoon for your convenience.
