The weather may have turned cold in Happy Valley but don’t let that fool you, the action is just heating up for folks looking to get out of the house rather than hibernate for the winter season. The area has a little bit of some-thing for everyone.
Bellefonte’s Victorian ChristmasFor those in or looking to get into the holiday spirit, there may be no better start to the Twelve Days of Christmas than by making a trip to our county seat to visit Bellefonte’s Victorian Christmas. This annual event has become a tradition for many families both in Happy Valley and those traveling. The weekend of fun gets under way starting Friday, Dec. 13 and runs through Sunday, the 15th. In be-tween, folks can find all sorts of holiday spirit with a nod to the days of the Victorian era. Some of the things you can enjoy are High Tea at the Reynolds Mansion and the Gaslight Gala if being swanky is your thing. A Gingerbread House contest is being held, as well as an arts and crafts show. Don’t miss the beautiful decorations in the Festival of Trees and be sure to catch the concerts that will be held throughout the three days. And a must is a ride on the horse drawn carriage. Perhaps for the hopeless romantics there will be a nice light snow falling while you take in the quaint town of Bellefonte. Check out the schedule of events at www.bellefontevictorianchristmas.com.
Craft ShowThose looking to get a jump on their Christmas shop-ping but looking to avoid the crowded stores, can get the special gift for that special someone by visiting the annual arts and crafts show being held at the Bald Eagle Area High School in Wingate on Nov. 30.
The State TheatreIf shopping isn’t your thing, perhaps it’s watching old movies at a historic downtown theater. Well, if that is the case, you are in luck, as The State Theatre is showing classic holiday movies, It’s a Wonderful Life, White Christmas and no Christmas season would be complete without watching A Christmas Story. The showings of the Frank Capra classic, It’s a Wonderful Life, starring Jimmy Stewart, will run every day from December 16-19. Times for the movie are 4 and 7:30 p.m. Come out and enjoy this timeless classic and then take a stroll through the downtown stores and shops. Perhaps get a bite to eat or drink at one of the many locales nestled in town. White Christmas, the classic holiday movie with Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney will have just one showing on Dec. 23 at 4 p.m. Following that at 7:30 p.m. is the story of Ralphie and his quest for the ultimate gift, a Red Rider BB Gun with a compass in the stock. A Christmas Story became a classic thanks to the twenty-four hour loop on Christmas Eve but nothing beats watching a movie in the historic theatre. The Polar Express at the Schlow LibraryWant to take the kids on a magical train ride to the North Pole? Two weekends in December will afford you the op-portunity as Schlow Library will offer readings of The Polar Express from 11:00 a.m. through 3:00 .p.m. on both De-cember 7 and 14. On December 8 and 15, hours are shorter (2-4:20 p.m.). After the reading, jump on the trolley that will take you to Santa’s Workshop at the PSU Downtown Theatre for pictures with Santa and frame decorations for kids under 12. Each child will get to choose a toy from Santa’s Workshop and new sessions start every twenty minutes. For additional details, call Schlow Library Children’s De-partment at 814-235-7817.
Slab Cabin ParkSo you are tired of being inside and want to try out that new sled that you found under your tree on Christmas morning? Well, guess what? If the snow is on the ground, get yourself to Slab Cabin Park in Lemont. It’s the area’s premier sledding slope and best of all…it’s as free as the snow. Slab Cabin is located at 316 Elmwood St. in Lemont and is open as conditions permit. While the daylight sled-ding is cool, sailing down the hill at night is pure exhilara-tion. You can do that from 5-11 p.m. and again, conditions must permit. And don’t worry about getting cold as they also have a fire ring to warm those chilly fingers and toes!
Tussey Mountain Don’t have snow to get in touch with you inner “ski-bum”? Well, there is a place that pretty much has all the snow you want from sometime in December through mid-late March and it’s in your backyard. Tussey Mountain sits on about 50 acres and boasts that approximately 38 of them are skiable. Don’t want to ski? How about snowboarding or better yet, tubing? The tubing is a popular activity with
a lift that will haul you to the top so you can sail back down the 1,000 foot lanes. Tussey’s snow machine covers about 90 percent of the surface so you don’t really have to worry about Susie Snowflake coming through town paint-ing everything white. For more information visit www.tusseymountain.com
First Night State CollegeLooking for a fun way to bring in the New Year? Be sure to check out First Night State College. Whether it is the food, the ice sculptures or the musical and vaudeville performances that bring you in, it will be the fun of taking a carriage ride and making new friends that will keep you coming back. You can even make your soon-to-be-broken New Year’s resolution at one of the ice sculptures. For those runners (and walkers) out there, First Night State College has their 5k Resolution Run that normally fields around 600 participants. It’s good fun and for those look-ing for a good time with family and friends, it’s a great place to be and its alcohol free.

As the season winds down and the fourth quarter starts, I thought it would be interest-ing to see how the teams are doing that have handed the Nittany Lions a loss this season. As bad as it feels to have four losses in those ten games, considering the youth of this Penn State team, it could be worse. It can always be worse. The Nittany Lions suffered their first loss of the season to a Central Florida team that they will face again next season in Ireland. Unfortunately, that means they may have to face off against Blake Bortles again. The junior quarterback had his way with the Penn State secondary en route to a 34-31 win at Beaver Stadium. The Knights currently stand at 8-1 with their only loss coming a week after beating the Lions when they lost to No.12 South Carolina at home, 28-25. Since then, they went on the road and defeated then undefeated No.8 ranked Louisville, 38-35. Central Florida sits atop the newly formed American Athletic Conference and should finish the season with an 11-1 record and a conference title. Not a bad loss considering what they have shown to be. The next loss came on Oct. 5 and no surprise, it came on the road at Indiana. Of the four losses the Nittany Li-ons have this season, this is the one that feels the worst in my opinion. Despite all the lost scholarships and whatnot, Penn State still has a better team than what showed up in Bloomington. The players know it. The coaches know it. And now you know it. The Nittany Lion defense again struggled with a pass happy quarterback and a potent offense. The Hoosiers record of 4-5 (2-3 Big Ten) speaks more to their defensive struggles than their offensive prowess. The offense ranks in the top twelve in the nation in both passing (12th with 327 yards per game) and points scored (10th with 43.1 per game). Indiana QB Nate Sudfeld has completed 62 percent of his passes on the season for 2,182 yards while tossing 19 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. However, on that day against Penn State, he was made to look like Joe Montana. Meanwhile, the Lions offense again struggled on the road like a Ferrari fueled with diesel. The Hoosiers will likely finish the season 5-7 with road games at Wisconsin and Ohio State before
closing the season with in-state rival Purdue. A bad loss no matter how you slice it. A few weeks later came another road game and an-other loss. But this time it was to a team that was heavily favored over the Nittany Lions. Ohio State has a very talented team that hasn’t lost in the last two seasons. Penn State was coming off the high of their four overtime victory over Michigan and the Buckeyes could have cared less. If this game would have been a fight, it would have been called after the touching of the gloves. After a 63-14 plastering, Penn State had witnessed firsthand where their program once was and where they would have to work to once be again. The Buckeyes may play for the BCS title at season’s end, but the knock against them will be the lack of competition within their conference. To that, you can argue until the cows come home. I will tip my hat and say they are the class of the Big Ten and be done with it. They end the season with a home game against Indiana and a road game against rival Michigan.They should end the season undefeated and most certainly should have their name in the conversation as the best in the nation. Better than Alabama? They have to be better than Michigan before that question can be answered. The fourth and final loss was on Nov. 9 and again, it was on the road. Minnesota is a good team but not two

touchdowns better than the Nittany Lions. Whether it was the road or not that causes these problems, it’s clear that the one constant about this team is its inconsistency. That comes from youth which comes from the loss of so much leadership from last season’s team. The Gophers stand at 8-2 (4-2 Big Ten) and will play in a bowl somewhere. Which one will be decided in the next two games as they will face a tough Wisconsin (7-2) team at home before ending the season on the road at East Lansing against Michigan State (8-1, 5-0 Big Ten). Another tough loss that you would like to see Penn State pull out, especially after the defense turned things around in the second half. Hav-ing an offense go scoreless in that same second half is not the recipe for ending your road trip woes. The Nittany Lions have lost to four opponents with a combined record of 30-9 and Indiana has six of those losses and only four of those wins. They also have tough games against Nebraska and Wisconsin to close out the season. The game with the Cornhuskers will be Senior Day at Beaver Stadium but the finale is on the road at Camp Randall against a powerful Badger team. With their road woes, a split in those two games would be great. Winning both would jump start the offseason and recruiting. This
is a team that, considering the rebuilding that is being done, is right about where they should be. Winning games they should win and dropping the ones they shouldn’t. That trend will start to turn as soon as this team realizes they may be a team with a few less talented players, but they are not a less talented team with fewer players. WE ARE…

While the 2013 season hasn’t ended yet, it’s never too early to look ahead to Penn State’s 2014 football sched-ule, especially if you are lucky enough to be making the trip to Dublin, Ireland for the Croke Park Classic. For the rest of the world that will be watching the game between Central Florida and Penn State next Aug. 30, the matchup will serve as an incredible start to what could be a great season for the Nittany Lions. The game in Ireland, for good reason, is the talk of the schedule next season. The Lions will get a chance to avenge this season’s loss to the Knights and that will provide a much needed kick start to the season. The game will start at 8:30 a.m. here in Happy Valley. That will be pretty awesome. Irish coffee at kickoff is never a bad thing. Penn State will return to Happy Valley for a game on Sept. 6 against the Akron Zips to the thrill of the home

crowd. The Zips lost 31-7 to the Nittany Lions in their last matchup in 2009 in a game played at Beaver Stadium. A member of the Mid-Atlantic Conference, the Zips typically serve as a good primer for the Lions. Sept. 13 has the Nittany Lions on the road for their ear-liest conference opener as they visit one of the two newest members of the Big Ten, Rutgers. Penn State holds a 22-2 advantage in the all-time series and with Rutgers strug-gling in the past few years, the Nittany Lions should pick up a conference win providing the road doesn’t prove to be as rough in 2014 as it has this year. A rare visit from the Minutemen of UMass on Sept. 20 should provide a warm-up for Northwestern the follow-ing week. The Wildcats always seem to give Penn State a good game and it will cap off back-to-back home games before a span of almost a month before the Nittany Lions return to Beaver Stadium. A trip to Michigan and the Big House awaits Penn State on Oct. 11 and is sandwiched in between two bye weeks in what has been an annual scheduling tradition. The second off week comes before Ohio State storms into town
possibly still not having lost since Urban Meyer took over in Columbus. The Buckeyes will be here on Oct. 25 for what will likely be a “white out”. The other new kid on the Big Ten block, Maryland, finds its way to Beaver Stadium on Nov. 1 for the first time since 1992. The teams haven’t played since 1993 in College Park, Maryland when Penn State handed them a 70-7 loss. The Nittany Lions own a 35-1-1 record over the Terrapins. Welcome to the Big Ten, turtles. Two of the final three games of the season are at home for the Nittany Lions with Temple here on Nov. 8 and Michigan State on the 22nd. In between is a trip to Cham-paign to take on Illinois. With seven home games in 2014, the fans will have plenty of opportunities to fill the stadium and show their Penn State pride. It looks like it should be another fun ride as this young team gets a year older and more important-ly, more of the recruits into the fold as the program builds itself into a national power once again.

The weather may be turn-ing colder outside, but when you live in “Hockey Valley”, the talk of ice is the hottest thing in town. The Penn State men’s and women’s ice hockey teams have gotten their seasons underway and there is nothing like col-lege hockey. Nothing beats the speed, the sound and the excitement of watching it. Live. Not on television. It’s in your own back-yard. And it’s Penn State. What else do you need? You need tickets. The men’s team has games coming up in the brand new Pegula Ice Arena against Union on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 with the puck being dropped at 8 and 9 p.m. respectively those two nights. After an extended break, the team returns to Pegula for two games against Minnesota on Jan. 12-13 with both games starting at 7 p.m. Boston College is another big matchup in Janu-ary with the Eagles landing on Jan. 25 for a 7 p.m. start.
February has the men’s team on home ice just four times with two against Michigan on Feb. 7-8 and Michi-gan State on Feb. 14-15. March will be much of the same with just four chances to see the men in action on the ice. The 7th and 8th will have Wisconsin in for two followed by Ohio State for two on the following weekend (14th and 15th). The women’s ice hockey team has just nine more op-portunities for fans to get out to Pegula to see them in
action before the season comes to an end. November comes to an end with a chance to see both the men and women’s team skate on the same day as the women face off against Maine at 2pm on November 30th. The men are in action at 8pm on the same night against Union. The women return to their home ice in January with two against Colgate on Jan 10-11 and then two against RIT on the Jan. 31 and Feb 1. The 8th and 9th of February will see Lindenwood in town for a pair before the curtain falls on the season with a weekend set against Mercyhurst on Feb 15-16. Make it a date night. Get your tickets, and then head out to a local restaurant before watching either the men or women in action on the ice. Whether it’s the action on the ice or the atmosphere off it, the experience could make even the most casual of fans wanting to be on the glass. Keep your stick on the ice and get your hockey on, this is Hockey Valley!

The Penn State Lady Lions basketball team opens the season as the two-time defending Big Ten conference champions and with the senior leadership they have in Maggie Lucas and Dara Taylor, it doesn’t seem improbable that they will add another championship at season’s end. Last season, Lucas was named the Big Ten Player of the Year and is a two-time All-Big Ten first teamer. She paces the Lady Lion offense while Taylor controls the defensive tempo for Penn State. Couple the play of Lucas and Taylor along with a strong bench, and it appears that the team is set up for a strong run at not only the conference title, but also a deep run in the NCAA tournament. Speaking of the NCAA tournament, the Lady Lions will be looking to improve on last year’s performance that saw them get knocked off in the second round. This year, the Bryce Jordan Center plays host to first and second round games of the NCAA tournament and Penn State is hoping to get wins in both games in front of what is certain to be a pro-Penn State crowd. The team is off to a good start and fans will have the opportunity to see a few nonconference games before the
Big Ten opener against Purdue on Jan. 12. Fans can see Notre Dame on Dec. 4 as well as Texas A&M on Dec. 15. Games against Alcorn State on the Dec. 22 and Hartford on Dec. 29 round out the year for the Lady Lions and should provide a great opportunity for fans to see some new faces.
Penn State is looking to match last year’s success at the BJC when then posted a perfect 14-0 mark. That has something to do with the fans and that is the easy part. With all the ticket specials that Penn State runs, you really have no reason not to find your way to a game. One of the most popular games of the year and for good reason is the Pink Zone game on Feb. 16 against Wisconsin. If you can make it to only one game this season, make it this one. $4 from every single-game ticket goes to the Pink Zone at Penn State. Last year, the Pink Zone donated a record breaking $260,000 to six Pennsylvania breast can-cer charities. To see all the breast survivors at the game is worth any price of admission and most definitely should be on your “must do” list.

While it may not have a catchy name like “Title-town” yet, it could very soon. Rec Hall houses the defending three-time national champion Penn State wrestling team and if the preseason rankings are to be believed, Penn State could again find themselves with the NCAA title in March. And if Cael Sanderson has anything to do with it, his Nittany Lions will certainly be a factor when the season comes to a close in Oklahoma City. Penn State, the preseason No.1 ranked team, opens its home schedule on Nov. 24 against Lock Haven in one of only eight matches at the famed Rec Hall. That means fans will have to act fast to see the team in action. With nine of the wrestlers ranked in the nation, including five of them in the top four of their respective weight classes, the Nittany Lions are sure to be exciting to watch and an even harder ticket to get. The five ranked wrestlers for Sanderson’s team are a major reason the team has earned the preseason No.1 ranking. Their successes this season will go a long way in determining the team’s success in the NCAA tournament. Junior Nico Megaludis is ranked No.3 at 125-pounds and should be one of the finalists in Oklahoma City. He is con-sidered one of the elite wrestlers in this weight class and is looking to improve on his two straight second-place finishes at the NCAA’s. At 165-pounds, David Taylor returns for his senior season as the man to beat in his weight class (ranked No.1) and would like nothing more than to cap his career off with that fourth national title for Penn State and his second NCAA title. He has finished second twice at the NCAA tournament including last year when he lost on riding time to Cornell’s Kyle Dake, 5-4. Taylor owns a 100-3 record at Penn State and is chasing Penn State’s all-time pins record. Matt Brown is ranked No.3 at 174-pounds and is excited for this season. In his sophomore season last year, his first as a starter, Brown wrestled his way to a second place finish in the NCAA tournament. He lost in the finals to top-seeded Chris Perry, 2-1. Ed Ruth. That name along with David Taylor is enough to make you find your way to Rec Hall to watch them wrestle. Ruth is one of the strongest and fastest wrestlers you will see. Just make sure to keep your eyes on the mat
as action happens fast when he is involved. He is the top-ranked wrestler at 184-pounds and is a two-time defend-ing national champion. He enters the season with a career 102-2 collegiate record. The lesser known of these five is Morgan McIntosh. He wrestled through a redshirt season last year and posted an impressive 12-2 record in open tournaments. As a true freshman at 197-pounds, he was a key player in helping the Nittany Lions 2012 National Championship run. The sophomore enters this season ranked No.4 at 197-pounds and looks to again dominate like he did two seasons ago.Penn State will have a few key matches early in the season with Pitt coming into Happy Valley on Dec. 8 and Ohio State on Dec. 15. The biggest match at Rec Hall this year will certainly be on Feb. 16 when Oklahoma State comes to town. The last team to pull off the four-peat in wrestling was Oklahoma State when the Cowboys did it from 2003-2006. There are a handful of teams including Iowa, Minnesota and Oklahoma State that should contend for the national title and Penn State will see them all during the season with only the latter being at Rec Hall. It should be an interesting season, but with a limited number of home matches, act fast or you could be on the outside looking in on what is truly one of the “must see” experiences in Happy Valley.

With the football season wrapping up, Penn State fans looking for some-thing to fill the void will have a nice selection on campus. If hockey or wrestling doesn’t appeal to you, perhaps bas-ketball is your sport of choice. The Nittany Lions basketball team will offer fans eight nonconfer-ence games at the Bryce Jordan Center for fans to get out and enjoy. Penn State boasts a youthful team with a nice balance of returners including Tim Frazier, D.J. Newbill and Bran-don Taylor. Frazier’s return from injury will be critical as he is one of the top point guards in the country when healthy. The team should be an exciting group to watch. As was evidenced with the upset loss to Bucknell, the Nittany Lions will need to use the nonconference schedule to get themselves ready for play and get the youngsters used to the speed of what some are calling the best basketball conference in the na-tion. The strength of the conference was on display when Michigan State took down Kentucky, the No.1 team in the land. Penn State gets its own look at the Spartans when it opens Big Ten play at home against Michigan State on Dec. 31. Indiana comes calling to Happy Valley on Jan. 11 in what will certainly be a big game for the Nittany Lions. The Nittany Lions will be looking to improve on last season’s Big Ten finish and will have their work cut out for them as they continue to build the program into what could be a future power in the conference. This season they will challenge opponents who, unlike in previous seasons, will not be able to take them lightly whether it is on the road or in the BJC.
Fans looking for a fun night out with the family, a date night or the start of a “guys night” out, give the team a shot and head over to the Bryce Jordan Center. Just like the football team, the team needs fans in the stands to provide support. Upcoming games have Marshall in town on Dec. 7 and perennial NCAA qualifier, Princeton, on Dec. 14 for a pair of afternoon tip-offs. The Princeton game is especially notable because it will be played in Rec Hall, the Nittany Lions first game in their old home since Jan.7, 1996. Its Penn State playing and you love the Nittany Lions, so that should get you off the couch a few times to watch them play. Check out the promotions being run and see what fits into your holiday schedule. Then call your friends and go have a good time rooting on the Nittany Lions. It will give you a break from the eggnog and cook-ies and for that you will grateful. You may find that you like it so much you will make a return trip and for that, the players will also be grateful. It’s a win-win. Hoop it up, Lions!

Warm & Inviting, Not EmasculatingAs soon as I entered ESSpa I was pleasantly surprised. I love spas, but sometimes they can feel cold or emascu-lating, like I shouldn’t be there. well-appointed changing room—again, leather seats—where I first enjoyed a private steam bath and then a plush oversized ESSpa robe waiting for me. Gradually decompressing, next I moved to a relaxation room where I cooled down prior to my massage and rehy-drated with cucumber-infused water.
After what seemed to be the perfect amount of relation time, Natalie, my massage therapist, gently introduced herself and discussed possible treatments to achieve my goals, ranging from a gentle Swedish Massage to a more aggressive Deep Tissue massage. We settled on a Hot Stone Massage, in order to warm and relax my aching muscles sufficiently prior to giving them the myofacial release they craved. During the mas-sage Natalie focused on the problem areas I had identi-fied during our consultation, and found a few I had not. The combination of ambient lighting, hot stones and re-lease of my knotted muscles put me in a hypnotic state, a true escape. Not to mention that I was actually on the table for 60 minutes – when you schedule an hour mas-sage at ESSpa you actually get an hour massage. Nice. After my massage and thinking about what my wife might like, (yes, I’m selfless), I decided to be adventur-ous. ESSpa recommended their MojiToe Pedicure. I was slightly skeptical about getting a pedicure, but ESSpa has a very private (and insanely comfortable) pedicure area. I melted into a soft leather recliner as a classic, hand-painted foot-soak tub was delivered to my feet, full of steaming hot water with aromatic mint essential oils, a little rum and mint leaves floating on top. I asked
about the tub since I have seen those big whirlpool chairs at other salons. My therapist, Felicity, explained that ESSpa’s Hungarian owner, Eva Kerschbaumer, refuses to use whirlpool foot baths at her spa as it is almost impossible to properly clean and disinfect them between guests. Good to know. So as my feet were loving their hot minty bath, I was served a delicious minty Mojito while Felicity continued to pamper me, dousing my feet with fresh-squeezed lime, followed by an exfoliating foot scrub, a moisturizing warm paraffin wrap and a clay mask. She continued with a complete massage—of not just my feet, but my calves and legs too! The pedicure concluded with a nail nourishing treatment, trimming of my nails and a final buffing. It’s been said that the health of your feet indicates the health of your body. As a guy who is constantly on my feet and frequently working out, my feet are always beat up and they hurt. After this experience, I would consider a pedicure at ESSpa to be preventative medicine. I left ESSpa a happy man. Not only did I have a great experience with professional and thoughtful staff, I discovered my new favorite place in Centre County to take my wife for a “Staycation.” Thank you, ESSpa!

Tips for getting through the holiday seasonBy Les Barnhart
Being someone that loves food, I thought that many of you could use and enjoy these tips as you enjoy the up-coming holiday “eating” season.
1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing about a good party food layout. In fact, if you see carrots that aren’t garnish-ing chicken wings, leave immediately. Find someplace that is serving rum balls and chicken wings. There is undoub-tly an app for that… just to be safe though, prepare some rum balls and wings BEFORE you leave the house and store them in an insulated container in your car. If your travels find you at a party that has a food lineup that re-sembles the produce department at a grocery store, head out to the car and scarf down your stowed away loot. You will find yourself feeling like Bear Grylls…
2. Drink as much eggnog as you can and do it quick-ly. Like fine single-malt scotch, it’s rare. In fact, it’s even rarer than single-malt scotch. You can’t find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It’s not as if you’re going to turn into an eggnog-aholic or something. It’s a treat. En-joy it. Have one for me. Have two. It’s later than you think.
3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That’s the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a bowl out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat it like there is a prize at the end. Repeat. Heed this warning however, if you feel the need to do shots of gravy, drink gravy from a cup, or eat it like soup, you need to step away from said gravy and seek help…fast.
4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they’re made with skim milk or whole milk. If it’s skim, pass. And as far as imitation potatoes? It’s the holidays!! Imitation are good for the other ten months of the year, not these two. It’s like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.
5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a party after all is to eat other people’s food for free and LOTS of it. Hello? In regards to the free food, here is a game I like to play. Try and sneak food home for con-sumption during an upcoming football game. Be sure to pack a convenient carrying case and by all means, get the kids involved in the act.
6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year’s Day. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do except for watching icicles form on your down spouting. This is the time for long naps, which you’ll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog. And besides think of all the exercise you will get during bowl game season; and have no fears, Penn State will soon again be in the bowl game sched-ule. In the meantime, the channel surfing, getting up and down for drinks, jumping up and down for touchdowns, and will make the naps a welcome respite.
7. Now, if you come across something really good at a buffet table, like chicken wings or pickles wrapped in cream cheese and Lebanon bologna, position your-self near them and don’t budge. I mean set your heels and widen your elbows. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. After that happens, find

a child that will serve as a food mule and will continue to deliver you the goods. A word of caution here though, you may want to get a second child in the event the first “dimes” you out about the food mule thing. Never work without a back-up plan. 8. Same for pies. Apple. Pumpkin. Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or, if you don’t like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day? My advice: don’t put them all on one plate. That way you can make repeat trips and treat each like it is your first. This could take practice. Oh and remember that apples are healthy. Eat as many as you can…it’s not your fault that someone threw them into a pie pan, slathered them in tasty goodness and then covered it all with a lovely layer of tastiness. Don’t hate the player…hate the game, my friends. 9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it’s loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at
all costs. I mean, have some standards. People will start to talk if they see you scarfing down this stuff. You also may want to check your calendar for any other parties in the neighborhood. Any party that has fruitcake out as a dessert may not be the most happening joint on the block after all. 10. One final tip: If you don’t feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven’t been paying attention. Reread tips; start over, but hurry, Janu-ary is just around the corner and that means only two things…diets and New Year’s resolutions. Remember this motto to live by: “Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the inten-tion of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate (or chicken wings) in one hand, root beer in the other, body thorough-ly used up, totally worn out and screaming “WOO HOO, what a ride!”
