I'm going to college to show what I can do.

Am I accepted in? Yes, it's true!

I will have all friends, no foes. And my GPA will be a 4.0!

I'm not very good at biology, but I'll have my Master’s in psychology.

I'm pretty much certain I'm going to college because my brain is filled with knowledge. I'm going to do well every day, every hour.

I know I'm going because I've got the power! The top of my brain, yes the very tip

knows I'm going to go to school — for free —

because I've got a scholarship!

ALAMANCE– BURLINGTON AT A GLANCE:

Q: What was your proudest

GEAR UP moment in 2012-2013?

A: Our proudest GEAR UP moment was developing close mentor

relationships with our GEAR UP seniors. When we first met them,

many did not have a sense of direction and were trying to develop an

action plan. Our hard work culminated in June 2013, when we were

able to see them honored in award ceremonies and celebrated as

they walked across the stage at graduation.

Location, Location, Location! If, as they say, location is everything, then the Alamance-Burlington School System is very fortunate. Our county is located midway between the peaceful

Blue Ridge mountains and the beautiful beaches of the Atlantic. The Interstate 85/40 corridor enables easy access to recreational areas as well as to major

colleges and universities, medical centers, and shopping areas. The county has a

population of approximately 130,800.

EDENTON-CHOWAN

Enlisting Parental Support The Edenton-Chowan community may be small, but it’s full of eager people who understand the need for and the purpose of the GEAR UP program. Among other best practices identified by the local GEAR UP team, it is mandatory for Edenton-

Chowan parents to attend parent meetings in order for their students to attend a GEAR UP Day/Senior Day or college visit.

This has increased parental participation while ensuring that parents understand the benefits of their students being a part

of the GEAR UP program.

Q: What was your proudest GEAR UP moment in 2012-2013?

A: Our proudest moment was being able to provide a

"Parents-Only Tour" of East Carolina University. ECU staff did

an excellent job of catering to our parents, and the parents

really appreciated having the opportunity to ask questions of

the ECU staff.

Supportive Businesses Give Back The business community in McDowell County has been so supportive of

GEAR UP. Businesses have sponsored food for our events, allowed students to job shadow, participated in our career fairs, and sent representatives to give classroom presentations on a variety of topics. We're very fortunate to

have such a supportive local professional community.

Q: What makes McDowell County’s GEAR UP efforts unique?

A: The community really works together to promote GEAR UP.

It's not just GEAR UP staff that encourages students and

families to participate in our events — it's teachers, parents,

and fellow students, too.

Small Town, Big Results Our community is very small and rural, but due to the dedication of our teachers and administrators, we are producing some the of the brightest students in the state. Students in the Pamlico County community are driven to excel in the classroom as well as in the community. Parents in Pamlico County are also very hands-on in

terms of their children’s educational experience.

Q: What makes GEAR UP a success in Pamlico County?

A: One of the things that the Pamlico County GEAR UP team

does well is that we utilize community resources. Organizations

have been very willing to help the school district to make

events and student field trips possible.

“GEAR UP has shined a positive light on a

well-deserving district.”

PERQUIMANS COUNTY

Pride, Passion, and Individualized Programming With just one middle and one high school, there’s a lot of pride and passion about what goes on in Perquimans County’s schools. Our small schools also allow for more one-on-one interaction with students, and getting to know them on a more personal level allows for more individualized programming.

The students know the district GEAR UP staff and know we are accessible, and the community has embraced GEAR UP and is excited about what it

can offer the students.

More than 80% of Perquimans County’s 7th graders attended a college

visit in 2012-2013. Many of these trips involved leaving town before

sunrise and returning long after sunset. Chaperones, parents and

students believed these visits would aid in shaping students’ perceptions

of postsecondary education options, preparation and financing.

" I loved being able to see what actually happens at college. " — Ayla Perales,

rising 8th grader at Perquimans County MS

" GEAR UP wants to help find a good college that is suitable for each and every student in our school. " — Tyshawn Poe,

The Payoff of Partnerships The Rockingham County GEAR UP team is reaching out in non-

traditional ways to form partnerships across our area. We have enlisted the help of small business owners, organizations, and ministries in order to

reach every student and are continuously looking for new ways to enable the community to embrace our efforts to support students and families.

“ GEAR UP will help me in the future because it

has showed me different types of career choices.

Because of GEAR UP, I know how to find help to

pay for college and how to start preparing myself

for college. GEAR UP has opened my eyes to new

opportunities, and I feel more aware and confident

about going to college.” — Ashley Lindblom, rising 8th grader at Western Rockingham MS

“ What I have to say about GEAR UP?

Honestly, I think GEAR UP is great.

Without GEAR UP, I wouldn’t be

graduating this summer, and I am highly

thankful for that. ”

Community Support: Above and Beyond Our community is supportive in building a college-going culture among our students. Once community members are informed about GEAR UP and what we stand for, they are willing to support in whatever capacity they are asked to serve in. Many will go above and beyond the call of duty to support the program. During events, numerous restaurants and churches have donated refreshments and volunteers to assist in our efforts, and we

anticipate even greater support as we enter year two of the grant.

“ If I had to give advice to other students, I would advise them to stay connected with

GEAR UP because the experience is exhilarating and the staff are diligent workers. It’s essential to choose a university that is right for you and stay focused in school to get accepted into the

college you aspire to attend. ” — Khadejah Bennett,

WARREN COUNTY

A Close-Knit Community with a Rich History

Warren County is a close-knit rural community. Our community's best assets are its people and natural resources. The county has a rich history that includes pre-contact Native American cultures and a

strong African-American heritage. Warren County is also the home of

the PCB protests, and home to John Hyman, the first African-American in North Carolina to be

elected to congress.

“ Warren County’s teachers and community partners have taken a strong interest

in GEAR UP activities and have promoted our program in the community and in

our schools. ” — Nikeena Boyd-Kearsey, Warren County Student Coordinator

“ My son, Quendarius Williams, is in the GEAR UP program. GEAR UP has helped him with his leadership skills and with meeting new peo-ple. He has learned a lot from the different trips they have taken, and the GEAR UP staff is professional,

easy-going and always open to new ideas and volunteers. ”

YANCEY COUNTY

Opportunities for Learning in Students’ Back Yards Yancey County Schools is a rural district located in western North Carolina. Home to Mt.

Mitchell and not far from the Appalachian Trail, the area offers some of the most beautiful mountains and streams in the world. The district is supported by hard-

working, independent parents and families. Many students know about farming, fishing, and hunting. Yancey County is also home to a vibrant community of artists, with many students coming from families of potters, sculptors and other craftspeople. Opportunities

like Camp Full Circle, a local GEAR UP summer enrichment program, place learning right in the students' back yards and draw on the rich resources of knowledge and

experience located in our community.

“ GEAR UP is an asset for the children in our community because it helps bridge the gap

between home, school, and future endeavors. It reinforces the college and career coaching that should begin at home and echoes guid-ance provided by school counselors. Regard-less of each student's prior knowledge, this

program can be a true blessing to those who actively participate and utilize the resources

that are provided. ” — LaQuita Lipscomb, Parent of Nyia

Lipscomb, rising 12th grader at Person HS

“ GEAR UP is a wonderful program that has helped families in our community realize the

opportunities that are available to them as far as college options and financial aid. I believe that

GEAR UP has helped some students realize that there is a college out there for them where they

can succeed in a career and receive a college education. Before GEAR UP came to our school, the same students thought they had no chance

of ever going to college. ” — Crystal Hall, Person HS teacher and GEAR UP

tutor

“ The GEAR UP program is an excellent op-portunity for a second chance at completing a course, preparing for college, or getting ahead on work for future grades. I believe the best part of the program was all the field trips to

various college campuses and different work-places offering unique job opportunities. Over-all, GEAR UP is a highly recommendable and

informative learning experience. ” — Matthew Harris, 2013 Dalton L. McMichael
