Greetings,

Thank you for your interest in Westminster College and the Titan swimming and diving program. I hope that you find the 2013-14 Titan Swimming & Diving Guide beneficial as you learn about our team and the exceptional young men and women who are continuing the “Titan Tradition.”

Although swimming and diving are individual sports, nothing can be accomplished without teamwork. We instill the value of teamwork to help our Titans reach their potential as students, as athletes, and as members of the community. Each student-athlete in our program is given the opportunity to excel and improve, while also learning to win with integrity and lose with dignity.

Titan swimming and diving is a program with class, discipline and loyalty, and accepting the challenge to become a Titan is something that makes our athletes proud and thankful.

Our goal is to compete on a national level every year. Included in our 49 All-Americans are four national champions, while our women’s team has sent swimmers to nationals in six of the last seven years and our men’s team has qualified swimmers for nationals in five of the last eight years.

Please utilize the contact information in this guide and discover what Westminster College and the Titan swimming and diving program have to offer.

Season OutlookThe 2013-14 Westminster

swimming and diving teams return 27 letterwinners (15

women’s, 12 men’s) from a season ago where the Titan men won the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship, their fifth in school history, and the Titan women who placed second at the conference championships.

Last season, veteran head coach Rob Klamut earned the PAC Men’s Swimming Coach of the Year, his ninth Coach of the Year honor of his career, while then-sophomore Steven Brooks was tabbed the PAC Men’s Swimmer of the Year as he won the 200 yard backstroke with a PAC meet-record, an NCAA provisional, and a school-record time of 1:52.43. Brooks also won the 100 yard backstroke with a school record time.

Also returning for the men are First Team All-PAC honoree sophomore Matt Baurle and junior Jake Pletz, a

two-time First Team All-PAC honoree. Baurle placed eighth at the NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in the 100-yard breaststroke, earning the distinction of All-American in the process. Baurle finished in a school-record time of

55.93, breaking his own school-record of 56.10 that he set in the preliminaries.

“We think we have the personnel in place to send a relay to nationals this year,” Klamut said. “Brooks, Baurle, and Pletz are going to be real important in that process.”

Other returning First Team All-PAC honorees for the men are sophomores Jimmy Newman and Austin Karper. Juniors Jimmy DeBone and Nicholas Smith and sophomore Adam Smale return after receiving Second Team All-PAC accolades a year ago.

“It is going to be real important for those All-PAC guys to lead the team this season,” said Klamut. “They need to contribute at the PAC championship meet as they did last year.”

The Titan women have finished either second or third since it last won the PAC title in 2007. All First Team All-PAC swimmers from last year are back for the 2013-14 season, including seniors Amanda Marlow and Erin

Senior Amanda Marlow

Erdley, juniors Marina Rozick and Ashley Wyland, and sophomore Kelsey Reott.

Senior Carrie Whisel, juniors Suzanne Wasilko, Rebecca Mobley, and Veronica Corcoran, and sophomore Sara Peace also return after having All-PAC Second Team performances last year.

“All of our returning all-conference honorees are all going to be huge point scorers for us all year and at PACs,” added Klamut.

“Our team goals are always to win PACs,” Klamut said. “The men did it last year and it is definitely attainable again this year. The women closed the gap last year on Grove City at the championships and I think this year we can close the gap even more and have a shot at the championship. We want to perform well in the dual meets to get us to the championships and then hopefully get some people to Indianapolis for the National Championships on both teams.”

The Titan Family The Westminster men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams function as one family to achieve shared goals. This support in the pool and in the classroom is one of the reasons why head coach Rob Klamut’s teams have thrived throughout the years.

Men’s Newcomers

Touring Titans ... One of the perks of being a Westminster swimmer is the teams’ annual training trip in January. The teams travel to Tampa, Fla. for three consecutive years and every fourth year they travel to San Diego, Ca. The trips last 10 days during semester break. The teams train outdoors and they compete against a nearby college team.

Serving Others ... The Westminster swimming and diving teams serve the community in several ways. They provide volunteer lifeguards at the annual New Wilmington Rotary Club Labor Day Swim Meet at the borough pool. The teams provide an annual Christmas dinner and gift exchange at a nursing home (pictured below). The teams also use their fundraising project to provide a service to the community as they provide swim lessons to local youths.

A veteran in his third decade as the head coach of the one of the top small-college swimming programs in the nation, Rob Klamut enters his 29th year as the head men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach at Westminster College in 2012-13.

Klamut owns a 207-79-2 (.722) career record as the Titan men’s coach and as the first-ever women’s team head coach at Westminster he owns a 186-85 (.686) record since 1987. In 2007, Klamut registered his 300th win as a college coach as his combined men’s and women’s record is 393-164-2 (.705).

Both the Titan men’s and women’s teams won the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) championship in 2007, giving both teams their fourth league team titles in five years, including the men with three straight and the

women with two consecutive crowns. Most recently, in 2013, the men’s team was crowned the PAC champion for its fifth overall title in school history.

Klamut has earned either PAC Men’s or Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year honors nine times since the Titans joined the league in 2003. Overall, Klamut has been recognized by his peers as conference coach of the year 14 times since 1992 including honors from the Penn-Ohio Conference and the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). He was also awarded the American Swimming Coaches Association Award of Excellence 13 times in 1991, 1994, 1998-2002 and 2005, 2007, 2010-13.

The accolades he received as a coach are indicative of the numerous accomplishments of his swimmers. Klamut coached three national champions, 109 individuals earning All-America or All-America honorable mention honors, 113 conference champions and several scholar-athletes and all-academic team members.

Overall, Westminster has won eight men’s team conference championships (Penn-Ohio 1993-94, GLIAC 1999, PAC 2003, 2005-07, 2013) and five women’s team conference titles (Penn-Ohio 1992, PAC 2003-04, 2006-07).

A four-year swimming letterman at Clarion University, where he graduated in 1982, Klamut was a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference finalist in 11 events, as well as team co-captain his senior year. Following graduation, he earned his master’s degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh in 1985.

Klamut began his coaching career at Elizabeth-Forward High School, leading his 1985 boys team to a section title.

In addition to his coaching responsibilities at Westminster, Klamut previously was the chairman of the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Committee, a committee he has served on for four years. He also served in similar capacities for the CSCAA, the NAIA and the Penn-Ohio Conference.

Klamut was inducted into the Lawrence County Historical Society Sports Hall of Fame in 2013. He and his wife, Kelly, reside in New Wilmington with their daughter Stephannie.

Providing support for Westminster’s athletic programs is the Towering Titan Organization (TTO), formed in 1976 around a core of devoted, loyal and intensely interested alumni, parents and friends. The organization purposes itself to help maintain, improve and endow Westminster College’s athletic programs.

Over $3 million in gifts have been contributed to the Towering Titan Fund since its inception.

Each gift designated for a varsity sport program will be distributed as follows: 90% goes directly to a fund for the sport chosen to be used for program enhancements; 5% goes to a fund supporting TTO operations and promotions; and the remaining 5% goes to the TTO Endowment Fund or to the All-Titan Endowment Fund. Gifts designated for football or men’s basketball go to the TTO Endowment Fund and gifts designated to all other varsity sports go to the All-Titan Endowment Fund.

A minimum gift of $30 qualifies a donor for membership.

Members receive a membership card and decal, issues of the Towering Titan Newsletter and invitations to social events such as golf outings each July, and recognition dinners and ceremonies that are scheduled periodically. Qualifying gifts are also recognized through membership in Westminster’s Giving Clubs. For more information or to join the Towering Titans, contact Westminster Director of Athletics Jim Dafler at (724) 946-7313.

Westminster College has a proud athletics heri-tage that is steeped with

a tradition of winning. Although the College was founded in 1852, varsity athletics at Westminster did not become prevalent until 1884. Beginning in 1926, the sports teams at Westminster became known as the “Titans,” after a sportswriter for the student news-paper, The Holcad, nicknamed the resurgent basketball team the “Towering Titans” because of younger, taller men that made up the starting lineup. The athletics program at Westminster became best known for the success of its football and men’s basketball teams. The Titan football team won six NAIA National Championships from 1970-94 and 71% (398-157-10) of its games since 1952. The men’s basketball team, honored by the Associated Press as the nation’s top small college team in 1962, was the all-time winningest NAIA team before Westmin-ster joined the NCAA in 1998.

*PAC All-Sports Trophy Standings determined by points system awarded to schools’ order of finish in each sports standings.

Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Confer-ence continues

its mission of promoting intercollegiate athlet-ics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 select private institutions in Pennsylvania, West Vir-ginia, and Kentucky, the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercol-legiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s phi-losophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC annually crowns champi-ons in 19 sports (10 men, nine women).
