Season Preview

Page 7: 2013-14 UW-Stevens Point Women's Basketball Media Guide

Despite losing three starters from last season’s team, the goals remain the same for the UW-Stevens Point women’s basketball team in 2013-14.

Last season, the Pointers were 24-6 overall and finished second in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). UWSP went on to win the WIAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed, defeating top-seeded UW-Whitewater 76-71 in overtime in the championship game behind a career-high 34 points from senior Sam Barber (Schofield, WI/D.C. Everest/Winona St.).

By virtue of winning the WIAC Tournament for the sixth consecutive season, UW-Stevens Point advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the tenth time in school history. The Pointers defeated Concordia-Moorhead 72-64 in the opening round for the 23rd NCAA Tournament win in program history, before falling to Simpson 88-84 in the second round.

“It’s always difficult when you lose in the NCAA Tournament,” head coach Shirley Egner said. “We obviously would have liked to make the Sweet 16 or the Elite Eight but we weren’t able to get it done. It’s unfortunate that we weren’t able to move on for the senior class but we’re never happy unless we’re playing for a national championship. It ends so abruptly every year and it’s painful. I get to come back and the senior class doesn’t.”

Last season’s senior class included Sam Barber (Schofield, WI/D.C. Everest/Winona St.), Liz Althoff (Darien, WI/Clinton) and Brooke Allen (Barneveld, WI/Barneveld). Barber won the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) NCAA Division III Player of the Year award and was the two-time reigning WIAC Player of the Year. She averaged 19.1 points

and 7.5 rebounds per game and was in double figures in every game except one. Althoff was third on the team in scoring (9.4 ppg) and rebounding (3.7 rpg). Allen started all 30 games and played a team-high 30.5 minutes per contest. She was second on the team with 35 threes made and ranked second on the team in assists (71).

“Sam was a great player,” said Egner. “She could create her own shot, score inside and outside and was one of the top rebounders. Sam brought so many things to the table but we will miss Liz and Brooke as much as Sam. They were gritty and they didn’t back down. We’ll miss having three players on the floor, plus a point guard, who could handle the ball.”

The top returner for UWSP is senior post Myranda Tyler (Grafton, WI/Grafton), who was named to the

All-WIAC Defensive Team last season after ranking second in the conference in blocks (39). Tyler started all 30 games and was behind only Barber in scoring (10.3 ppg) and rebounding (5.4) on the Pointers squad. UW-Stevens Point also returns senior point guard Alyssa Olp (Brillion, WI/Brillion), who started 28 games last season. Olp ranked second in the WIAC in assists (97) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.23), while also recording 47 steals.

“Tyler and Olp bring us some experience,” said Egner. “Olp is our point guard, our leader and Myranda is our inside presence. We want to play inside-out so we need someone on the block to be productive for us.”

In addition to Tyler and Olp, sophomore Autumn Hennes (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna), senior Jenna Pitt (Amherst, WI/Amherst) and junior Kaitlyn Jacobs (New Franken, WI/Green Bay Preble) will see expanded minutes for the Pointers this season. Each of the three saw

action off the bench last season, as they all played in 25 games or more. UW-Stevens Point also has three freshmen that will look to be in the mix: Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest), Sarah Gamillo (Colby, WI/Colby) and Taylor Douglas (Brodhead, WI/Brodhead).

“We never replace,” Egner said. “We talk about having our kids be ready when it’s their turn. Now we have sophomores, juniors, and seniors that need to step up because it’s their turn. We try to build that chemistry so we’re playing as a unit. We saw some of that in Madison. We were unselfish and moved the ball.”

The Pointers already had their first taste of live game situations when they traveled to Madison to take on the Badgers in an exhibition on Thursday,

Page 8: 2013-14 UW-Stevens Point Women's Basketball Media Guide

Nov. 7. UWSP stuck with the Badgers for the first 11 minutes or so before UW began to pull away but the game exhibition provided the Pointers with valuable experience.

“I really felt like we competed hard for the most part,” said Egner. “For being in a difficult situation, I think our kids showed a lot of character and that was a big positive we took out of it. Another positive was that we have kids that can score the basketball even though we lost a big chunk of our scoring from last year. Our goals going into that game were to compete, defend and rebound and, for the most part, we were in the right spots.”

UW-Stevens Point, ranked No. 23 by D3hoops.com, begins its season this weekend by hosting Lake Forest and Martin Luther in the Pointer Tip-Off Classic. After that, the schedule stiffens as the Pointers face No. 5 St. Thomas and a tough Illinois Wesleyan squad next Thursday and Saturday. They then open WIAC play against UW-Eau Claire and UW-Whitewater, two of the powers of the WIAC. The strong early schedule will test the Pointers early

but UWSP is no stranger to strong competition.

“We’ll be tested before Christmas,” Egner said. “We definitely have a top schedule and there are no guarantees

in our league. Night in and night out, everything is a game. There are no freebies in the WIAC.”

Despite losing three key seniors and a tough schedule, UW-Stevens Point’s goals remain the same. “We want to win the league,” Egner said. “We set the bar and if we don’t get it, it’s not a success. It’s a whole new team with new dynamics and new leadership. We start over again and set goals to compete for a WIAC championship and tournament championship and we’ll see how far we can go. Those goals don’t change regardless of personnel. That’s what we strive for every day.”

Shirley Egner is in her 25th season as head coach of the UW-Stevens Point women’s basketball team and is the all-time winningest coach in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference history.

Egner has compiled a 457-189 (.707) overall record through 24 seasons with the Pointers. Over the last 10 seasons, Coach Egner has guided the Pointers to an average of 23 wins per season.

Egner is a four-time WIAC Coach of the Year honoree, earning the award in 2003-04, 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2010-2011. In 2010 Egner was inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Egner was also named the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division III Women’s Coach of the Year 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Last season the Pointers posted a 24-6 record and won the WIAC Conference Tournament for the fifth consecutive season.

Egner led the Pointers to the 2001-02 NCAA Division III title with a 67-65 win over St. Lawrence (N.Y.). As National Champions, the Pointers finished with a 30-3 record became the eighth team in NCAA Division III history to win 30 games in a season. Along the way to the championship, Egner guided the Pointers to a 66-60 victory over four-time defending Division III champion Washington (Mo.), snapping the Bears’ 70-game home winning streak.

Over the past 12 seasons the Pointers have compiled a 288-64 record, the best mark of any WIAC team over that span.

UW-Stevens Point won back-to-back WIAC titles in 2003-04 and 2004-05. In 2003-04, the Pointers also captured their first-ever WIAC tournament crown and Egner was named the conference’s Coach of the Year.

In 2007-08, the Pointers finished third in the WIAC regular season standings, but became the first non-No. 1 seed ever to win the WIAC tournament crown with wins at Whitewater and at Eau Claire, as Egner was again named Coach of the Year.

Egner came to UW-Stevens Point from Nicholls State University in Thibodeaux, La., where she served as a graduate assistant.

A native of McFarland, Wis., and a 1980 graduate of UW-La Crosse, she began her coaching career as head girls’ basketball coach at Shiocton (Wis.) High School. After a one-year stint as the girls’ freshman coach at Monona Grove (Wis.) High School, she became head girls’ coach at Waunakee (Wis.) High School, where she led the Warriors to a five-year record of 115-40, including conference titles in 1985, 1986 and 1987 and state tournament appearances in 1986 and 1987.

Following the 1986-87 season, she was named the WBCA District Five Coach of the Year and was chosen to coach the Class B South Team in the WBCA All-Star Game in Madison.

Egner, who was the chair of the NCAA Division III women’s basketball committee from 2006-08, is the senior women’s administrator for UW-Stevens Point Athletics.
