At a time when many coaches have said goodbye to the rigors of daily practice, coaching, recruiting and planning for a sea-son, UConn Head Coach Bob Goldberg is look-ing forward to his 26th season at Connecticut.

“Midway through last season I knew that I was enjoying coaching as much, if not more, than I ever have,” says Goldberg. “Couple that

attitude with the arrival of a brand new athletic department administration, Connecticut’s transformation to a top 20 national university over the last 15 years and the creation of the American Athletic Conference, the decision to continue coaching was not difficult.”

Coach Goldberg has developed a philosophy over the years that has proven to be successful in recruiting a certain type of kid to his pro-gram, maintaining a consistent level of performance and helping college swimmers improve throughout the course of their career.

“My years of coaching college kids have taught me so many lessons about determining what is important and what is not,” says Goldberg. “We all face daily issues that may seem overwhelming at the time, but in the long run they aren’t. Learning to differentiate what issues need immediate attention, and what issues can resolve themselves with time and patience is often the differences between a smooth and successful team, and a team that is filled with turmoil. You can make it look easy if you just keep it simple.”

Coach Goldberg believes there are three areas that swimmers need to focus on, and their consistency in each area will determine their ultimate success.

First, academic success should be the first priority, as school is the reason why people come to UConn. Success in the classroom will come from putting in the necessary time every day to get the work done in preparation for the next day. Putting off work that should be done today will only lead to academic failure the next day.

The next area of concentration is effort in the pool. “Every day I stress that consistent effort in the pool is the main road to success. One workout won’t make you a great swimmer, and one bad practice doesn’t make you a failure,” says the coach. “It is a string of good or bad practices that will set the tone for your performance when you need to call on your specific skills. If you come to the pool every day with the determination to put in your best effort, you will be successful.”

The final area of focus is social development, which is often overlooked on many college teams. The social obligation we have to be the best person we can be will certainly affect both your academic performance and athletic success. “I want our swimmers to become the best people they can be, from their behavior in the athletic facilities, to their daily interactions in the dorms and classroom setting,” says coach. “I love it when a professor stops me on campus and tells me they enjoyed having one of my swimmers in their class.” Sometimes it is a bumpy road when learning certain behavioral skills that will dictate our progress and eventual success in the real world.

Coach Goldberg’s approach has a proven track record of success. In the pool, his teams consistently perform at a very high level in a very competitive environment. Connecticut has always contended at the conference level under Goldberg, finishing each of his 25 seasons with a winning record. He has had swimmers compete at the highest levels in both the United States and abroad. UConn swimmers have participated at the U.S. Olympic Trials, Olympic Games, Senior National Championships, U.S. Opens and Regional Championships. International swimmers at UConn have competed nationally in Canada, Israel, Bulgaria, Ireland, England, Suriname, Jamaica, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Poland as well as at the European

and World Championships.UConn’s colors have been well represented across the world, though

Coach Goldberg does not take credit for this. “I have been fortunate to have some very talented swimmers in our program, who have gone on to do some great things,” says coach. “Their effort and work ethic has been impressive and has resulted in some great performances.”

Coach Goldberg has spent his entire professional life in aquatics and has worked in just about every level. “Growing up in a YMCA setting and working in a pool or on a waterfront my whole life has gotten me involved in everything with aquatics,” says coach. “My knowledge base has been expanded from teaching at every level and in every area, coaching, swimming and diving for so many years in the college setting and running and building pools. Being in the college setting and working with so many people from different backgrounds has opened up my view of the world. It has been a wonderful journey and I am happy to continue.”

Coach Goldberg spent his early swimming days learning at the YMCA under mentor Bob Rowe. He swam in prep schools under Coach Al Houston before experiencing a college career under legendary coaches Charles Silvia and Charlie Smith at Springfield College. After one year as a public school teacher, Goldberg became an assistant professor and coach at Penn State, where he worked with Lou McNeill. He then spent three years as an administrator and faculty member at N.C. State before coming to UConn to coaching swimming.

Goldberg is originally from Watertown, Mass. and has a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Springfield College and a Master’s degree in Biomechanics from Penn State. He is married to Alyce (Parrish) and they have three children, David, Scott and Sarah, and six grandchildren.

“Throughout my career I have remembered one quote from a college coaching class that for me has withstood the test of time,” says Goldberg. “‘You coach people who participate in your sport; you don’t simply coach a sport.’ Win or lose in the pool, being fortunate to deal with quality people during my time has proven to be the most rewarding experience. I really think my perspective allows me to view the value of how we are doing at a specific time beyond a stop watch or place in a race, and in the context of how the experience relates to student athletes personal growth and development.”

Swimming anD Diving CoaCHing Staff

University of Connecticut diving coach John Bransfield is in his 16th year with the program. Bransfield, the 2012 BIG EAST Women’s Diving Coach of the Year, led Connecticut to a very successful season last year, guiding UConn divers to the NCAA National Championships for the 4th consecutive season.

Following a dual meet schedule of building and shaping, five UConn divers scored at the Big East Conference Championships, and three made All-Big

East after finishing in the top 3 spots. Senior Danielle Cecco finished second on the 1-meter event and fourth on 3-meter. Fellow senior Grant Fecteau was third on the 1-meter and fourth on the 3-meter, while freshman John Brice was third on the 3-meter. Also scoring at the conference meet were senior Nicole Borriello and junior Tony Cortright. Four divers continued on to the NCAA Zone Meet, and all made the finals on both boards. Highlighting the Zone Meet was Danielle Cecco, a returning All-American from her junior year, who finished second on both boards and qualified for her third consecutive NCAA National Championships. The former Big East Champ and three-time NCAA Zone Champion graduated with all four school and pool records on both springboards. The diving program graduated three divers in May and has a young squad on the boards this year. With one senior, two sophomores and five freshmen, they are working hard to advance their skills following a regimen of advanced training methods and technical progressions. Bransfield is both confident and excited with the current team, seeing considerable talent and an even greater opportunity to create more depth in the program with the necessary focus already visible in his athletes.

Developing champions is not something new to Bransfield. In his 36 years of college coaching, he has had many conference champions and at least one conference champion at each and every school that he has worked at, including Army, Maine, Springfield and Northern Michigan. Bransfield has coached several national qualifiers including a four-time NCAA Division II Champion. In 2003, Melissa Kull became the first Connecticut diver to compete at the NCAA National Championships. Stephen Ferreira (’10) competed at the NCAA’s, followed by Cecco, who made the Big Dance in ’11, ’12 and ’13.

With a background which extends beyond the collegiate realm of diving, Bransfield has enjoyed many years of success with U.S. Diving as a Junior Olympic coach. In 1988 he was awarded a stipend to spend a few weeks working with two U.S Olympic Coaches. Bransfield has considerable experience with diving off the pool deck as well. Four times he served on the NCAA Diving Rules Subcommittee, and in the early 90’s he was appointed as a Regional Technical Director of United States Diving. While at Army, he hosted numerous clinics for U.S Diving Coaches involving several U.S Olympic Team Coaches. In 1998, he served as the Competition Manager of the Goodwill Games in New York.

Bransfield has taught numerous coaching clinics for Grass Roots fundamentals, Spotting Training and Safety Certification. In the summer of 2003, Bransfield spent close to three weeks in the People’s Republic of China. The opportunity allowed him to closely observe the training programs at two Provincial sites and attend the Asian Junior Championships.

Bransfield is a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., where he received his bachelor’s degree from St. Francis College. He earned a master’s at Northern Michigan and continued to study biomechanics while at Springfield College. Bransfield and his wife, Ginny, have four sons, and presently reside in Storrs.

Janelle atkinson-wignallassistant Swimming Coach

Janelle Atkinson-Wignall is in her fourth year as an assistant coach at The University of Connecticut working primarily with the distance and middle distance freestylers, and serving as the recruiting coordinator for the men’s and women’s teams. She has coached the Huskies to re-writing the 200, 500, 1000 and 1650 freestyle records for both the men’s and women’s teams, has her hand in 6 of the 10 relay

records, as well as the Men’s 200 backstroke, 200 and 400 I.M. records. The 1999-2000 National High School Swimmer of the Year, Atkinson-Wignall

earned 10 All-America honors while competing at the University of Florida. She also received three First Team All-Southeastern Conference accolades, had three top-three finishes in three years at the NCAA Championships and was a three-time SEC Champion. Atkinson-Wignall was also part of the 2002 team that became SEC Champions and was on the SEC Academic Honor Roll four times.

A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Atkinson-Wignall is a two-time Olympian competing in the 2000 Sydney, Australia and 2004 Athens, Greece Games. She finished fourth in the 400-meter freestyle and ninth in the 800-meter freestyle in Sydney. For the 2012 London Olympic Games, she returned home and served as a sports analyst on television during the swimming portion of the Games, which aired throughout the entire Caribbean.

In 2002, the Jamaica native won a pair of bronze medals in the 400-meter and 800-meter freestyle events at the Commonwealth Games held in Manchester, England. At the 2001 Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia, Atkinson-Wignall claimed a silver medal in the 800-meter freestyle and a bronze medal in the 400-meter freestyle event. She was a triple silver medalist (200, 400 and 800-meter freestyle) at the 1999 Pan-American Games in Winnipeg, Canada, and took part in the 2003 Games in The Dominican Republic. She is a seven-time recipient of the Jamaican Swimmer of the Year award and a six-time nominee for the Jamaican Sportswoman of the Year.

Before joining the Huskies, Atkinson-Wignall spent four seasons at Wright State University, coaching the distance group and directing the fundraising swim lesson program. Before WSU, she worked a year as a community relations officer for the Jamaica Information Service, a subsidiary of the Embassy of Jamaica, in Washington, D.C., and she was an assistant coach at Western Kentucky University before that. On the international scene, Atkinson-Wignall was selected as the head coach for the Jamaican National Team at the 2009 Swimming World Championships in Rome, Italy. In July 2013, USA Swimming appointed her to become the Head Coach for the first Southern Zone Diversity Summer Select Camp.

Atkinson-Wignall earned a bachelor’s degree in tourism and hospitality management from The University of Florida in 2005.

t.J. natalassistant Swimming Coach

T.J. Natal begins his first year at UConn after spending the last three seasons at Tulane University. He was an assistant coach for the Green Wave for two years before becoming the interim head coach for his final year there.

Before Tulane, Natal held coaching positions at several places. He coached the men’s and women’s swimming team at the University of New Orleans,

where he helped eight swimmers earn NCAA B Cuts and had several top eight finishers at the Sun Belt Conference Championship Meet during the 2009-10 season.

Prior to New Orleans, he coached the USS Elmwood Sharks in Harahan, La. Under his guidance, 22 swimmers qualified for sectionals, while four swimmers qualified for Junior Nationals.

Natal, who is from the New Orleans area, began his coaching career at Jefferson Country Club, serving as the head coach there until 2007. His own swimming career took off at Archbishop Rummel High School, as he was a four-time all-district honoree and claimed all-state honors three times. In his junior year he won the state title in the 100-meter freestyle and as a senior he won the title for both the 100 and 50-meter freestyle.

While swimming for the Sharks he made six Junior National cuts and one Senior National cut. After transferring from Loyola University, he swam for Louisiana State University from 2001-03. He would later complete his bachelor’s degree from Our Lady of Holy Cross in 2006.



Coach Goldberg is excited about the men’s team potential this year. With the return of several upperclassmen swimmers, the experience is there to have a great season. The senior class alone has a lot of talent, which has carried the team over the past three years. Add in a mixture of solid junior and sophomores who have proven themselves and some new swimmers, and there is clearly a reason to be optimistic.

The senior class is made up of seven strong swimmers that will lead the team. Keith Piper has been a class leader in and out of the pool since coming to Storrs. He has been a consistent leader in the backstroke event and an important part of all the freestyle relays. Also on the relays is Sean Battle, who has consistently emerged as one of the best sprint and mid-distance freestylers for UConn. Zach Coleman has recovered from his shoulder surgery of a year ago and is now training without restrictions.

One of last season’s surprises is Justyn Alexandre, who swam quality backstroke all year, including a remarkable swim in the 100-yard fly at the conference meet to earn a spot on the A Medley Relay. Chris Alvanos is looking to finish his career with some quality swims in the sprint events. The final member of the class is Ben Yacano, who has been a strong and consistent performer in the fly events, and comes in with a solid summer of training.

“A lot is expected of this group in maintaining the tradition of high quality swimming in the men’s program and a continued focus on quality work in the classroom,” says Goldberg. “This group is carrying a great deal of pride within our men’s program.”

The juniors are a smaller class in numbers, but a big class in the level of talent they bring to the Huskies. Lachezar Shumkov has made a remarkable transition from his home in Bulgaria to Connecticut. He owns the UConn breaststroke records and this past summer in Bulgaria he won four events at their National Championships. He dominated the breaststroke winning the 50, 100 and 200-yard events, and surprised everyone by winning the 200 IM.

Giving the Huskies a 1-2 punch in breaststroke is Wyatt Boliek, who has made incredible improvement. Boliek set the South Carolina long course state record this summer and won the consolation heat at last years’ conference meet with a brilliant swim, and he continues to impress in training and performance.

Luke Zalewski can swim all distances in the freestyle event, and

is still working to find his best event. Coming off knee surgery that hampered him last year, he should be a big factor for the Huskies this year. Finally, Sawyer Franz has been the proverbial jack of all trades of UConn swimming, as he has the ability to compete in every event except sprints. Sawyer needs to decide early on this year which events he wants to focus on and commit to training them. He has the potential to be an NCAA level swimmer in the backstroke and 400 IM events.

The sophomore class has a great balance of five guys, who have all made big contributions to the program. Greg Baliko has great potential in the IM as well in the breaststroke event. He is the perfect addition to Shumkov and Boliek in that event. A potential star for the Huskies is distance record holder Mike Lennon. Despite being ham-pered by a leg problem early last season, Lennon came back strong and set varsity records in the 500, 1000 and 1650 free at the confer-ence meet. A lot will be expected from him this season.

Jeff Magin is showing the same talent that his brother, former UConn winner Bill Magin, showed. He posted a sub 0:50 in his backstroke swim at the conference meet, earning a spot on the A Medley Relay. This season should see great progress in his 200-yard backstroke. Jeandre Pretorius has talents in several events and is best suited for the sprint stroke events. Finally, Ryan Walsh has the strokes to become a superstar and is coming off a great summer of training and racing.

Questions always surround the freshmen, but a couple of new swimmers will certainly make an impact. Chris Girg, a flier from Germany should compete well all year, and will be looking for NCAA qualifying times at the conference meet. James Donlevy is a solid sprinter that will have to fill the shoes of the graduated Kyungsoo Yoon. Kevin Konarski will be bidding for a spot on the 800-yard free relay, and Jerry Burton could become a presence in the backstroke and mid-distance freestyle events. Transfer Felix Samuels competed at the NCAA Championships last season, and he brings a wealth of experience and speed to the sprint events.

Connecticut coach John Bransfield is also excited about this season.

Freshman Spencer Beaulieu finished his high school career strong, and he rides the board well and is open to learning new skills. He has plenty of courage to throw all the dives, and if he can focus he has the potential to have a real impact as a freshman.

Sophomore John Brice is coming off a highly successful freshman year after winning All-BIG EAST honors. In spite of injuries, he has an extensive junior background, and with a keen sense for the intangibles, he is working hard on his overall conditioning to bet-ter his marks from last year. He should final at the Conference Meet, and be competitive for the top spots at the NCAA Zone Meet, where he made Finals both boards in 2013.

Anthony Cortright is in his final year as a Husky, looking to make gains on his spinning skills for a commanding dual meet season. He is very dedicated and with continued work on take-offs, he could final at the AAC Championships and make his debut at the NCAA Zone Meet.

In short, the men are poised to have another great season. After coming off a fourth place finish last season at the conference meet, Connecticut has added some quality swimmers and the Huskies have high aspirations heading into the season.

Men’S PReview

Junior Lachezar Shumkov has won the 100-Yard Breaststroke event the last two years at the Bulgarian National Championships.



This year the UConn women’s swimming team is heading into a new era. The last two to three years have seen some large and tal-ented classes come through the system and graduate with success in both the classroom and in the pool. Most of the varsity records are held by swimmers in the last couple of graduating classes. The task to break in a large and new group of athletes into UConn swimming is challenging and exciting at the same time.

This years’ senior class has just two swimmers. Kati Kyle returns as a very talented swimmer in the backstroke event and one of the more consistent performers for the Huskies. Catie Chang is a versatile swimmer who can swim anywhere but is best suited for the IMs.

The juniors are also a small group in numbers, but are big in tal-ent. Led in the pool by Chinyere Pigot, they are vital to the team’s suc-cess. Pigot has international experience at the World Championships, Olympic Games and various other international meets. The All-Conference swimmer holds the school record in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle, and certainly has the skills to go faster this year. Holly Gallagher has overcome some minor nagging injuries in her first two years, and is poised to dominate the 200-yard fly. She has swum well despite missing some valuable practice time, and has the stroke and skills to set UConn records in the fly events.

Kate Munzenmaier is another versatile swimmer who races really well for the Huskies, especially in the IMs. Hannah Perna is coming off a breakout season in her distance events and showed real promise in the 200-yard butterfly. Finally, Caryn Smith is a talented sprinter who has yet to reach her potential, but can this year.

There is a lot expected of this years’ sophomore group. Two very talented breaststrokers lead the way, and both have big upside. Laura Hyland and Laura Ruttan are potentially much faster than they were last season, which is an extremely exciting prospect. This versatile

class includes Kennedy Meier, who excelled last year in the backstroke events and has strong mid-distance freestyle potential. Last season Caitlin Cole swam her best times and will be a mainstay in the distance lane.

Emily Boyko continues to improve in the butterfly, and gives UConn a strong and deep fly group. Finally, Lexi Henry improved a lot last year and is ready to show her speed in freestyle.

New swimmers will make up a large part of the team this year, and there are many questions and high hopes in this group. Christine Pedersen comes from Norway with impressive backstroke times. Junior transfer Tessa Pena can swim in a lot of places, but will be especially valuable in the IMs and butterfly. Jamie Lynn Brookover can develop into a factor in the conference in both backstroke events.

Jordan Drake and Caroline Finkle have come north from Georgia and will add a lot to the team with their speed and versatility in many events. Shelly Faykes has the potential to develop into a strong distance freestyler for the Huskies, while Maddie Hoopes and Tara O’Prey have a lot of natural speed and they are both very versatile.

Nicole Ricci, Dede Parsons, Caitlyn Alvanos, Darrah Jampo, and Margot Manning all come to UConn from the Mid-Atlantic region, where so many great UConn swimmers have come from, and they cover just about all the events for the Huskies. Their names will be all over every meet result.

Sophie Nothnagle, who is out of New York, is very strong in the butterfly event, and Samantha Park looks to improve and make a mark on the team in the backstroke. These 15 new swimmers will give the UConn women a new look and a lot of energy in races. Coach Goldberg is excited about the potential of the freshman class but cautious at the same time as the group blends into the program. It will take time for them to develop, but they can be very good by seasons’ end.

On the diving side, Connecticut coach John Bransfield is excited for what’s to come this season. Freshman Alexandra Butera is an All-American coming out of high school. She has a competitive list on both boards, and should be a factor at the Conference Championships. With the right focus on technical development, she has a good chance to compete at the NCAA Zone Meet. Fellow freshman Lauren Cecco had a successful high school career, and has good natural lines. With improved board work skills and the determination to advance her list of skills, she should improve steadily in her freshman year.

Another freshman, Amanda Craig has trained with a good junior program, jumps well, and shows potential to make stride with difficult dives. She is a hard worker and shows great determination. The fourth freshman of the group is Michelle Kalupski, who is very strong and should score at the Conference Championships. She was a high school All-American, and with further improvement in take-off mechanics, she has the potential to make it to the NCAA Zone Meet in March.

Taryn Urbanus is in her second year in the program and she has already stepped up as a leader. She demonstrated great skills early in the season, and she should score at the Conference Meet. Her work ethic is unflappable and with improved strength, she could make the finals at the NCAA Zone Championships this year.

While in many respects this is a rebuilding year for the Huskies, don’t be surprised to see a lot of fast swimming as the UConn women get ready to race.

T he Wolff-Zackin Natatorium is home to the University of Connecticut

men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs.The 39,000-square foot natatorium provides one of the finest facili-

ties on the East Coast. Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are the only varsity programs housed in the facility.

The Natatorium was built in part of the university’s $28 million Sports Center Complex, which also includes the 171,000-square foot Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, home to the UConn men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs.

It features several high-tech innovations making the pool one of the fastest in the region. The facility is a 50-meter “stretch pool” that includes two moveable bulkheads, allowing the pool to assume several different configurations.

The standard collegiate length of 25 yards can be used in an all-deep-water course in the Wolff-Zackin pool, featuring eight-foot wide lanes and a flow-through bulkhead. A second bulkhead provides an enclosed warm-up and warm-diving area, while also allowing for a separate diving area. The diving area includes two one-meter boards and two three-meter boards mounted on concrete. A dry board and trampoline with spotting rigs, and one and three-meter boards with rigs over the top makes for excellent training.

Some of the other features of the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium include a state-of-the-art Colorado Electronic Timing System V, men’s and women’s team record boards, a videotape replay system and an underwater viewing window.

In addition, there are individual coaches’ offices, men’s and women’s varsity locker rooms and visiting team locker rooms. The spectator area can accommodate 800 Husky fans.

Adjacent to the Natatorium is Brundage Pool which is available to UConn coach Goldberg and his staff to enhance the Husky training pro-gram. Between the two pools, the Huskies have 18 lanes available to them for training purposes. The $14 million remodeling of Connecticut’s athletic

facilities included complete renovation of Brundage Pool, extending and expanding the great facilities UConn has to offer its swimming and diving programs.

The Wolff-Zackin Natatorium houses a terrific training facility for div-ers on the UConn team. There are two one-meter boards and two three-meter boards on shorts stands, with a spotting rig above each level. On deck, there is a dry board and a trampoline, each with a spotting rig, along with two state-of-the-art camera/Tivo systems and flat screen televisions for each side.

As part of the remodeled athletic complex project, UConn swimmers have the use of a new, state-of-the-art 6,000-square foot weight room, featuring all of the latest in strength and conditioning equipment. The Huskies also have daily access to a spacious athletic training facility with the latest technology for rehabilitating athletic injuries.

SUPPORT STAFF

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING

T he strength and conditioning program for the University of

Connecticut Division of Athletics is under the supervision of UConn Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Jerry Martin. The Strength and Conditioning staff services all 24 of Connecticut’s intercollegiate teams. UConn athletes have the use of two different weight rooms in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and the newly remodeled Hugh S. Greer Field House. In all, there are over 8,000 square feet of weight training facilities available for all UConn swimming and diving athletes. The weight room in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion is a free weight facility and supplies the Husky athletes areas in which to perform their power and Olympic lifts. The facility in the Greer Field House is fitted with more free weights in which the UConn athletes can incorporate circuit training, speed training and heavy negative workouts into their total strength training program. Each program is manipulated in order to fulfill the specific needs of the individual. Specific programs are developed to monitor prog-ress in strength, power, anaerobic conditioning and flexibility. This for-mat provides the coaches and medical staff with an accurate athletic profile on each swimming and diving athlete.

COUNSELING PROGRAM FOR INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETESE

stablished in 1986, the Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes (CPIA) provides comprehensive academic support to all UConn student-athletes. In her second year working with the men’s and women’s swim-ming and diving programs is Lindsay Darcy. Darcy recently joined the UConn staff from Manhattan College. Darcy earned a bachelor’s degree from Syracuse in 2005. She was a four-year letterwinner for the Orange field hockey team, and earned BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete selection all four years. In 2001, she earned All-America honors and at the conclusion of her final season with the Orange, Darcy was selected to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Darcy monitors student-athlete academic performance, coun-sels individuals regarding major and career options, facilitates regis-tration in courses that accommodate practice times while ensuring progress toward a degree, coordinator tutor support and assists student-athletes in the developing of learning and time management skills. The University of Connecticut swimming and diving team takes great pride in the academic and leadership accomplishments of its team members. The women’s team consistently has been recog-nized for academic excellence by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). Individually, Lindsay Hansen (2004), and Kydani Dover (2005), were honored with the Kinsman Award (CPIA’s highest award recognizing academic and athletic achieve-ment and improvement, service, leadership, perseverance, and char-acter). Similarly, the men have captured three of the last eight Kinsman Awards, with Craig Orski winning in 2003 and Bobby Folan in 2005 and Tristan Jones in 2007. Folan was also selected by the NCAA as the sole UConn representative to its 2005 Leadership Conference.

DEPARTMENT OF SPORTS MEDICINE

T he Department of Sports Medicine in the University of Connecticut

Division of Athletics works as an integrated multidisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide the optimal, safe environment for stu-dent-athletes to train and participate in their sport. The staff takes great pride in the individual attention paid to each student-athlete. They are devoted to preventing injury, rapidly diagnosing and treating injury and maximizing athletic performance. The disciplines of athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, orthopedic sports medicine, optometry, nutrition, exercise physiology and psychology work in concert to provide comprehen-sive care. The team is spearheaded by Robert Howard, MA, ATC, the Head Athletic Trainer. Walter Trisdale is in his first year of handling the day-to-day training needs of the UConn men’s and women’s swimming and diving team. Physician coverage is led by Dr. Jeffrey Anderson, the Director of Sports Medicine, and Team Physician, Dr. Thomas Trojian. The Orthopedic Sports Medicine Specialists for the team include: Dr. Michael Joyce of the Orthopedic Sports Specialists in Glastonbury; Dr. Robert Arciero, Dr. Thomas DeBerardino, and Dr. Augustus Mazzocca of the New England Musculoskeletal Institute at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington. The Department of Sports Medicine works closely with the Departments of Kinesiology and Nutritional Sciences on the University of Connecticut campus. This affords the student-athletes with the input of several nationally recognized exercise scientists. This coop-eration also keeps the sports medicine staff at the cutting edge of developments in the fields of human performance and sports nutri-tion. Members of the sports medicine staff are actively engaged in research that directly benefits the care of student-athletes. The Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut plays a critical role in assuring that all UConn student-athletes have access to the best medical support and health care pos-sible. Through patient care and ongoing research and education, the department continues to provide Husky teams a competitive edge from the medical perspective.

cOmmuNity Service aND the StuDeNt-athlete aDviSOry cOmmittee

The University of Connecticut Division of Athletics believes that the responsibilities of student-athletes reach beyond classrooms, libraries, fields and courts.

Community service is an integral part of the UConn experience as Husky student-athletes contribute countless hours each year to a number of worthy causes.

Much of this community service is coordinated through the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs are highly-involved in the SAAC. The 2003-04 SAAC president was Kate Jelus from the women’s team. The 2006-07 vice-president was free-styler Emily Karel.

The Committee consists of representatives from each one of UConn’s intercollegiate athletic teams and in addition to community service, it promotes fellowship and camaraderie between student-athletes from different sports.

The SAAC also holds an annual Talent Show for freshman student-athletes and an ice cream social at the end of each semester during the study period for final exams.
