UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN • 2013-14 CHARGER WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Coming off of one of the biggest turnarounds in the nation last season, the University of New Haven women’s bas-ketball team looks to continue the trend and compete for a Northeast-10 Championship in the 2013-14 campaign. The Chargers’ roster boasts 12 returners, including four student-athletes who started 17 or more games last win-ter,inthefirstseasonunderHeadCoachTyGrace.

Grace, a 1999 graduate of the University of New Haven, re-turned to her alma mater in July of 2013 as the 16th head coach in program history. Most recently the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Seton Hall University, she has logged 13 seasons of Division I coaching experi-ence and previously served as head coach at Ramapo College of New Jersey. As a student-athlete, Grace is one of only two Chargers to have recorded more than 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career.

BACKCOURTNortheast-10 All-Rookie Team honoree Briana Bradford will once again run the point in her sophomore campaign. Bradford ranked second on the team last winter with 12.7 points per game, adding 4.1 rebounds and 2.9 assists per contest. She has already established herself as a clutch

performer, knocking down a pair of game-winning three-pointers in conference wins over Adelphi and Massachu-setts-Lowell during her rookie season.

Aquillin Hayes returns to her position out on the wing after averaging a double-double in 2012-13 with 10.3 points and a team-leading 10.4 rebounds per game, including more than four rips per contest from the offensive glass. Hayes ranked third in the conference on the boards last season and slotted at fourth in the NE-10 with 1.7 blocks per game. The junior will be a versatile weapon on the perimeter with both a solid mid-range game as well as the ability to get to the rim.

Anotherflexibleassistinthebackcourtis2011-12North-east-10 Rookie of the Year, Bria Moore. Now a junior, Moore ranked third on the team last winter with 10.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game as one of three Char-gers to start all 27 contests. Also a threat from long-range with 28 made triples in 2012-13, Moore scored a career-high27pointssparkedbyfivetreysintheDec.8homewinover crosstown and conference rival Southern Connecticut State.

SignificanttimeonthewingwillalsogotoLaurenHebert, who appeared in all 27 games with four starts in her rookie campaign. Hebert averaged 6.6 points and 3.6 rebounds per game and knocked down 22 three-pointers last winter.

Elizabeth Cruso, another true point guard, took the court in 17 contests in 2012-13. She totaled 26 points and 11 assists in 7.7 minutes per game and is expected to see an increased role running the Chargers’ offense in her junior season.

After missing the entirety of 2012-13 due to injury, Audrey Cunningham re-enters the mix in the New Haven backcourt this season. She played all 26 games of the 2011-12 campaign, including eight starts, averaging 4.8 points and 2.2 rebounds while draining 28 three-pointers.

The Chargers will get additional depth around the perime-ter from returner LaTanza Britts as well as the squad’s lone newcomer, Jasmine Gibson.

FRONTCOURTPoised for another strong season in the post is junior Ashley LeBlanc. The 6-2 center averaged 7.1 points and ranked second on the team with 5.6 rebounds per game last season. She poured in a career-best 25 points at Saint Rose during her freshman campaign and, last winter, hauled in a career-high 16 rebounds at perennial NE-10 power Franklin Pierce.

Rykema Stone also appeared in every game for New Haven in 2012-13, including 17 starts. She netted 3.9 points and 3.2 rebounds per contest, hauling in 11 boards on Feb. 6 as the Chargers competed a home-and-home season sweep of division foe Adelphi.

Graduate student Ayana Duncanson scored 2.5 points per game and snagged 3.7 rebounds last winter, appearing in 20 games for New Haven. With 55 career contests played for the Blue and Gold, she brings additional experience to thepostinherfinalseasonwiththeChargers.

Returning to the mix after missing all of 2012-13 due to injury is Ana Obella. Obella has played 34 games in two seasons of competition with the Chargers, totaling 29 points and 33 rebounds in an average of 10.9 minutes per appearance.

New Haven will look for additional depth down low from AmberMartinez.Martinezhasappearedinfivecareercontests.

COACHING STAFFJoining Grace on the sidelines will be assistant coaches April Phillips and Nikita Reddy. Phillips most recently worked alongside Grace as Coordinator of Basketball Op-erations at Seton Hall. As a student-athlete, she appeared in three NCAA Tournaments at Xavier University and won a pair of Atlantic 10 Championships.

Reddy was a tri-captain for the Chargers last season and appeared in 61 career games for the Blue and Gold. Also a Dean’s List student, she graduated from the University in May of 2013 and is currently pursuing an MBA at New Haven.

SCHEDULEThe Chargers’ 26-game slate is highlighted by a trip to the Rollins Thanksgiving Tournament and 12 games playedwithintheconfinesofChargerGymnasium.TheNortheast-10 calendar includes preseason No. 1 Bentley and nationally-ranked Stonehill, as well as Assumption and Franklin Pierce – both of whom joined the Falcons and Skyhawks at the 2012-13 NCAA Div. II East Region Championship. Outside of the conference, New Haven will meet reigning NCAA National Finalist Dowling and could challenge perennial South Region contender Rollins at the Tars’ home tournament in late November.

Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University PresidentSince becoming president of the University of New Haven in 2004, Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D. has led the University of New Haven through a period of remarkable growth and development. In the past seven years alone, enrollment has grown by 42 percent to more than 6,400 undergraduate and graduate students, who

hail from 35 states and some 45 countries. Full-time undergraduate enrollment has grown by 86 percent and applications have increased by 176 percent. During this time, the University has completed over $110 million in construction projects and has launched 17 new academic programs.

UNH now ranks among the top comprehensive universities in the North and boasts nationally ranked programs in a number of majors across business, criminal justice, engineering, forensic science, and the liberal arts and sciences. In recognition of his contributions to transforming the University, Dr. Kaplan was named “Businessman of the Year” by Business New Haven magazine in 2008.

President Kaplan also was awarded the 2011 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education. The award recognizes President Kaplan’s efforts to make UNH a national leader in experiential education, requiring every undergraduate student to complete an internship, an academic service learning experience, international study or a faculty-mentored research

project before graduation.

Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report.

Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies.

Dr. Kaplan also served as dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY College at Buffalo and as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University.

In addition to earning his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Dr. Kaplan holds a Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German and English) from Eberhard-Karls Universität and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Dr. Kaplan is the author of a book on American translations of the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke; a book onTimO’Brien’sfiction, publishedbytheUniversityof

South Carolina Press; and an anthology of international war stories, published by the University Press of Colorado. He also has written a number of scholarly essays.

Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan, are both ardent opera buffs and love to ballroom dance, hike and downhill ski. They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled to more than 30 countries during their 35 years together, including Tanzania, where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a son and three daughters.

Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actress-comedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. Irv Glovin was a good friend of Oskar Schindler, was instrumental in getting the story out in book and film form (hewas associate producerof thefilm),and isPresidentof theOskarSchindlerHumanitarian Foundation. Dr. Kaplan also serves on the board of the Foundation.

Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan grew up in Southwest Germany. She holds the equivalent of an American M.A. in Secondary Education and taught at a German high school. She is a ceramics artist and taught German and pottery as an adjunct faculty member in Colorado and Virginia.

Deborah Chin became the school’s fourth Director of Athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 16 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair for the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008 and was promoted to Associate Vice President, Director of

Athletics and Recreation in 2010.

UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament over 50 times in 17-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of state-of-the-art blue and gold synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. In 2007, Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and findUNHanewathletics conference that bestfits the institution’s long-termacademicandathleticaspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. After a five-yearhiatus, theChargerfootball team returned to the gridiron in 2009, and have since won back-to-back conference championships and advancedtotheNCAAQuarterfinals.

A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979.

Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. The Northeast-10 Conference is an NCAA Division II conference that was established in 1979. The conference consists of 15 member institutions located throughout the Northeast in the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont.

The inst i tut ions that make up the Northeast-10 include Adelphi University (Garden City, N.Y.), American International College (Springfield, Mass.), Assumption College (Worcester, Mass.), Bentley University (Waltham, Mass.), Franklin Pierce University (Rindge, N.H.), Le Moyne College (Syracuse, N.Y.), Merrimack College (North Andover, Mass.), University of New Haven (West Haven, Conn.), Pace University (Pleasantville, N.Y.), Saint Anselm College (Manchester, N.H.), Saint Michael’s College (Colchester, Vt.), The College of Saint Rose (Albany, N.Y.), Southern Connecticut State University (New Haven, Conn.), Southern New Hampshire University (Manchester, N.H.), and Stonehill College (Easton, Mass.). The 15 member institutions are spread geographically from Syracuse, N.Y. to Waltham, Mass. and Colchester, Vt. to Garden City, N.Y.

Many of the members are located in or around the metropolitan areas of Albany, Boston, Manchester, New Haven, Worcester, and New York City. The conference was proud to welcome the New Haven and Adelphi in its latest expansion, adding to the powerful union of strong academic and athletic institutions.

The Northeast-10 has evolved into a membership committed to competitive athletics programs that emphasize the education, bothonandoffthefield, ofmorethan 6,000 student athletes. Among the many accomplishments of these institutions are NCAA Division II national championships in women’s basketball, women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’strackandfield, andmen’sand women’s swimming and diving.

In all, 80 different Northeast-10 Conference teams were selected to participate in NCAA Championship play during the 2012-13 academic year. The 80 programs represented 15 of the 16 conference institutions.

Fromthefieldofplaytoinsidetheclassroom, the Nor theast-10 honored a number of student-athletes for their academic accomplishments. Over 50 percent of all conference student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA throughout the 2011-12 academic year and were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll as a result. Of the nearly 6,000 honor roll selections for the fall and spring, 244 earned a perfect 4.0 GPA. The conference also honored 260 student-athletes that excelledatahigh level on thefieldand inthe classroom as members of academic all-conference teams.

Today’s Northeast-10 Conference remains focused on complementing the academic integrity and missions of its member institutions with a commitment to a broad-based championship program, as evidenced by the 23 sports the conference offers in championship play, the most such of any Division II conference.

Through the establishment and enforcement of regulations, the conference aims to encourage policies that enable intercollegiate athletics programs to contribute to and be considered an integral part of the total educational of ferings at our member institutions. The Northeast-10 can look to a long history of success including the growth from seven original member institutions to more than double its size 30 years later, the contention for and winning of multiple national championships, and the recognition ofstudent-athleteperformancesoffthefieldand in the classroom.
