2013-14 nCHC playerS of tHe montH (prevIouS WInnerS)MONTH PLAYER ROOKIE October Riley Barber, So., F, Miami Kyle Osterberg, Fr., F, UMDNovemberDecemberJanuaryFebruaryMarch

Barber tied for the national lead with 12 points in October in

just six games. His eight goals were second in the NCAA and tops in the NCHC for the month while he also dished out four assists in helping the RedHawks to a 3-2-1 start to the year and

a top-10 national ranking. Of his eight goals, two were game-win-ners, which tied for second in the NCAA and first in the NCHC, three were power play tallies, which tied for fourth nationally and first in the conference, and two came short-handed, which shared both the NCAA and NCHC lead in October. Barber wasted little time denting the scoreboard, totaling seven points in Miami’s opening-weekend sweep of Ohio State (Oct. 11-12). He dished out two assists in the opener and then tallied a career-high five points the next night against the Buckeyes, including four goals, the most by a RedHawk in a game since 2009. The sophomore winger then added another goal in Miami’s first ever NCHC win Oct. 19 over North Dakota, which was the game-winner and started a three-game goal streak. He totaled four points at Providence Oct. 25-26 to com-plete the month with a goal in the first game and two goals and an assist for a second three-point (or more) game the next night, one of which was a short-handed goal in the 4-4 draw. In addition to his scoring, Barber posted a +6 rating in October. He was named the inaugural NCHC Offensive Player of the Week after his hat trick and seven-point weekend against Ohio State. The Washington Capitals prospect had three multi-point games in the month, including two multi-goal contests, and had a point in all but one game in Octo-ber. His 2.00 points per game led the NCHC and tied for second in the country in the opening month of play.

Osterberg totaled four points on two goals and two assists in six games in October for the Bulldogs, helping UMD to a top-20

ranking and a 3-2-1 record. Minnesota Duluth went 3-0-0 in games where Osterberg recorded a point. His two goals tied for ninth nation-ally among rookies during the month and first among NCHC freshmen. His four points tied for third in the NCHC among rookies, while the left-winger also posted a +4 rating in the month. Osterberg notched his first collegiate point on an assist in his first game -- a win over Michigan Tech Oct. 11. He then tallied his first ca-reer goal, unassisted, Oct. 19 in a win at Colorado College, which was the Bulldogs’ first ever NCHC victory. The five-foot-eight, 180-pounder capped the month with his best showing, notching a goal and an assist for his first multi-point game, leading UMD to a 4-1 upset of No. 2 Notre Dame Oct. 26. nCHC tournament format

T he NCHC Tournament will consist of four quarterfinal series on the first weekend following regular-season play (March 14-16). The four higher seeds will host the four lower seeds in a best two-out-

of-three format. Seed #1 will host Seed #8, Seed #2 will host Seed #7, Seed #3 will host Seed #6, and Seed #4 will host Seed #5. The winners of the four quarterfinal series will advance to Target Center in Minneap-olis for the two semifinal games on Friday, March 21. (Teams moving on to the semifinal games will be reseeded based on the final regular-sea-son standings). The winners of the two semifinal games (4:08/7:38 p.m. CT) will then meet in the Championship Game (7:38 p.m. CT) on Saturday, March 22 for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, while the two losers from the semifinal games will face each other in the third-place game (3:38 p.m. CT) earlier in the day.

All games, with the exception of the third-place game, will be played with complete sudden-death overtime periods (per NCAA Rules). If the teams are tied at the end of regulation, the ice shall be resurfaced and the teams will return to the locker room for the intermission. Upon returning to the ice, the teams shall change ends to begin a 20-min-ute sudden-death period. This shall continue until a goal is scored and a winner is determined. The third-place game will have a five-minute overtime, followed by a shootout in order to determine a winner. CBS Sports Network will broadcast both semifinals and the championship.

Target Center, located in the heart of downtown Minneapolis, is home to the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves and the WNBA’s World Cham-pion Minnesota Lynx and, in addition to basketball games, hosts over 200 events annually including concerts, family shows, other sporting events and special events. The facility, which is the 22nd busiest arena in America with over 1 million visitors per year, will receive a $97-million renovation beginning in 2014.

Target Center has played host to many historic hockey games, including Border Battles between the University of Minnesota and the University of Wisconsin, the Minnesota State High School Boys’ Hockey Tournament, the WCHA Final Five and select NHL preseason and regular-season con-tests. The facility has already upgraded hockey related facilities, including remodeled locker rooms, enhanced concourse and concession areas, new dasher board system, improved ice making equipment, and more.

overtIme/SHootoutS/poIntS In StandIngS

T he National Collegiate Hockey Conference will use shootouts to award an extra point within conference standings. The NCHC Board of Directors unanimously approved the use of a shootout

to decide games after the NCAA standard five-minute, sudden-death overtime period has expired.

All NCHC regular-season conference match-ups will feature a shootout should the game end in a tie at the conclusion of a five-minute overtime period. Any game that uses a shootout will be officially recorded as a tie within the overall record of each team. The Pairwise ranking will be calculated knowing the game was officially a tie.

The shootout will feature three shooters pre-selected by each team following the conclusion of overtime. The team that scores the most goals among the three shooters will be declared the winner. Should the shootout be tied at the conclusion of the initial three shooters, a sudden-death round with one shooter from each team will commence until a winner is declared. Goaltenders will remain on the same ends of the ice for the shootout as they were for the overtime period.

Each conference game will be worth three points. Three points will be awarded to any team that wins a game in regulation or within the five-minute sudden-death overtime period. One point will be awarded to each team in a game that remains tied at the conclusion of the overtime period. One additional point will be awarded to the team who wins the shootout, giving that team two points total for winning the game in a shootout. A team that loses in regulation or during the five-minute overtime period will receive zero points.

Non-conference games held in NCHC venues will also feature a shootout with mutual agreement from the visiting institutions. NCHC Tournament games will not feature shootouts but rather 20-minute sudden death overtime periods will be played until a winner is declared (Exception: The third-place game of the NCHC Championship will use a five-minute overtime followed by the standard shootout).

JulIe & SpenCer penroSe memorIal Cup

Awarded to the NCHC regular season champion, the Julie and Spencer Penrose

Memorial Cup (right) will serve as the league’s crowning achievement. The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penrose’s also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs.

• Miami has dropped three straight games after getting swept in a two-game series at UNO last weekend. That skid marks the first time MU has dropped more than two in a row since Oct. 15-28, 2011 when it dropped five in a row. It was also the first time the RedHawks were swept in a weekend series this year.

• Junior forward Austin Czarnik picked up an assist in Friday’s 6-3 setback at UNO, giving him 96 career points. He needs four more to become the 48th member of Miami’s 100-point club.

• After opening the year with a 6-2 win at Ohio State, the RedHawks are 1-4-1 in their last six road games, losing three straight away from Oxford, including both games last weekend in Omaha.

• Miami travels to Bemidji State for its final non-conference series, marking its first visit to BSU since Nov. 10-11, 2000 -- both Miami wins.

This Week’s Games:Fri., Nov. 29 at Bemidji State (5-7-2, 5-4-1 WCHA) - 7:37 p.m. CT Sanford Center - Bemidji, Minn.

Sat., Nov. 30 at Bemidji State (5-7-2, 5-4-1 WCHA) - 7:07 p.m. CT Sanford Center - Bemidji, Minn.

Key Fact: With a 5-7-2 record, Bemidji State is only the second team that held a losing overall record at the time Miami started a series with it this season. The RedHawks are 4-2-0 all-time against the Beavers.

PreVIouS Week recaPS

Friday, nov. 22NEBRASKA OMAHA 6, MIAMI 3

OMAHA, Neb. – Behind a five-goal second-period outburst, including two from freshman forward Austin Ortega, Nebraska Omaha rolled past No. 8/8 Miami, 6-3, Friday night at CenturyLink Center. With the win, the Mavericks moved back into first place in the conference while knock-ing off their former CCHA rival in the RedHawks. The first period saw just one goal as senior forward Bryon Paulaz-zo buried a rebound on the power play to put Miami up 1-0. UNO came out firing in the second stanza, however, as junior forward Dominic Zom-bo tied the game with an unassisted goal just 22 ticks into the period. Less than two minutes later, senior forward Johnnie Searfoss put the Mavs on top while Ortega added goals at 7:21 and 17:35 of the second period, sandwiched around senior forward Brock Montpetit’s tally. Trailing 5-1, Miami cut its deficit in half with two goals in the final 23 seconds of the middle frame as sophomore forwards Sean Kuraly (power play goal) and Kevin Morris each lit the lamp. The RedHawks would get no closer though, as UNO junior forward Josh Archibald scored midway through the final frame on the man ad-vantage to seal the 6-3 victory. Ortega finished with three points for the Mavs, adding an assist, while Montpetit also had three points, chipping in two helpers in addition to his goal. Sophomore forward Riley Barber handed out two assists for Miami. The Mavericks finished with a 37-32 shot advantage, including 17-11 in the final 20 minutes, while junior goaltender Ryan Massa compiled 29 saves to earn the win. Miami sophomore netminder Jay Williams started but was hurt early in the second period after making six saves and allowing two goals, and was replaced by classmate Ryan McKay, who stopped 25 shots in relief and suffered the loss. The ‘Hawks went 2-for-7 on the power play while UNO was 1-for-5.

COLORADO COLLEGE 2, ST. CLOUD STATE 2 (OT)CC wins shootout, 1-0

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Junior forward Scott Wamsganz scored the game-tying goal for Colorado College in the third period and then tallied the lone goal in the shootout to lead the Tigers to a 2-2 overtime tie and shootout win over No. 2/2 St. Cloud State Friday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The Tigers picked up two points in the standings with the shootout win while the Huskies earned one. SCSU sophomore forward Jonny Brodzinski opened the scoring midway through the first period on the power play, but CC sophomore forward Cody Bradley tied the game a little over three minutes later with a power play tally of his own. In the second period, the Huskies regained the lead when freshman defenseman Niklas Nevalainen found the back of the net with 3:50 left in the stanza. Brodzinski assisted on the goal for a two-point night. With 8:42 remaining in regulation, Wamsganz knotted the contest at 2-2 to force overtime. After a scoreless extra session, the game went to a shootout where Wamsganz scored in the second round and senior goaltender Josh Thorimbert denied the Huskies on all three chances to earn the Tigers an extra point in the standings with a 1-0 shootout win. In addition to the shootout, Thorimbert totaled 30 saves in the draw as CC held a slight, 33-32 shot advantage. SCSU junior netminder Ryan Faragher compiled 31 saves in the tie.

WESTERN MICHIGAN 2, MICHIGAN STATE 0

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Sophomore goaltender Lukas Hafner pitched his first career shutout in just his second career start (and second consecutive start) to backstop Western Michigan past Michigan State, 2-0, Friday night at Munn Ice Arena. The Broncos snapped a four-game winless streak with the victory over their former CCHA rival Spartans. After a scoreless opening period that saw MSU hold a 9-6 edge in shots, sophomore forward Nolan LaPorte put the Broncos on the board to break the deadlock with 6:52 remaining in the second stanza. Junior forward Justin Kovacs then doubled WMU’s lead 6:58 into the final frame to make it 2-0. Hafner carried the Broncos from there, denying any chance of a Spartan rally, as he finished with 22 saves, including eight over the final 20 minutes, to earn his first collegiate win. MSU held a slight 22-21 edge in shots as Jake Hildebrand totaled 19 saves in defeat. The teams were a combined 0-for-8 on the power play with WMU going 0-for-5.

DENVER 3, AIR FORCE 3 (OT)

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – In a back-and-forth game that saw Air

Force jump out to a 2-0 lead and Denver score three straight to go in front, the two in-state rivals settled for a 3-3 overtime tie Friday night at Cadet Ice Arena. The Pioneers extended their unbeaten streak to five games with the draw against the Falcons. Midway through the first period, Adam McKenzie opened the scor-ing with a power play goal for Air Force. Just 55 ticks into the second stanza, Chad Demers doubled AFA’s lead with a goal of his own, but freshman forward Emil Romig got one back for Denver only 24 seconds later to make it 2-1. Fellow freshman Trevor Moore then knotted the game 7:52 into the middle period while junior forward Daniel Doremus gave DU the lead with less than four minutes left in the stanza. With Air Force trailing 3-2 in the final frame, Scott Holm ripped a wrister from the high slot past Pioneer senior goaltender Sam Brittain to knot the game for the Falcons with 9:22 to play. Neither team would score the rest of the way, including in the five-minute overtime, as the game ended a 3-3 draw. Air Force nearly doubled Denver in shots, 34-18, including 8-2 in the third period, but Brittain compiled 31 saves to collect the tie. Jason Torf stopped 15 shots in net for the Falcons. Cole Gunner assisted on all three goals for AFA, which went 1-for-5 on the power play. The Pioneers were 0-for-4 on the man advantage.

MINNESOTA 6, MINNESOTA DULUTH 1

MINNEAPOLIS – No. 19 Minnesota Duluth struck first early, but No. 1 Minnesota scored six unanswered goals in the first two periods to knock off the Bulldogs, 6-1, in non-conference action Friday night at Mariucci Arena. UMD and the Golden Gophers were long-time rivals in the WCHA prior to both moving to new conferences in 2013-14. Sophomore forward Charlie Sampair got the Bulldogs off to a strong start, scoring just 4:19 into the contest, but UMD’s offense was unable to muster much from there. Minnesota, meanwhile, scored three goals in less than three minutes in the second half of the opening period as A.J. Michaelson, Tom Serratore and Justin Kloos all found the back of the net even strength to put the Gophers up 3-1. Minnesota then struck for three more in the second stanza with the first two coming from Kyle Rau (5:26 into the period) and Travis Boyd (12:36 of second period). The Gophers capped their scoring with 2:53 remaining in the middle period when Michael Brodzinski tallied on the power play, as neither team lit the lamp over the final 20 minutes. Serratore, Rau, Boyd and Brodzinski all added assists for UM as well for two-point nights. Despite the loss, the Bulldogs outshot top-ranked Minnesota, 37-34, including 15-5 in the third period. Gopher netminder Adam Wilcox stopped 36 shots, however, to earn the win, while senior Aaron Crandall suffered the loss for UMD, making 22 saves but allowing five goals in just over 32 minutes of action. Sophomore Matt McNeely then replaced Crandall in goal and made six saves on seven shots. UMD went 0-for-7 on the power play while Minnesota was 1-for-5.

BOSTON UNIVERSITY 3, NORTH DAKOTA 1

BOSTON – Boston University scored twice in the first period and it was all the Terriers would need to defeat No. 14/15 North Dakota, 3-1, Friday night at Agganis Arena. Cason Hohmann opened the scoring 9:14 into the contest to put the Terriers on top, 1-0. With just 2:45 left in the first period, Danny O’Regan doubled BU’s lead on the power play while Garrett Noonan assisted on both goals. The two sides combined for 20 shots in the sec-ond period but the score remained the same. Five minutes into the final frame, Kevin Duane upped Boston’s lead to 3-0 with BU’s second power play goal of the night. Sophomore forward Rocco Grimaldi broke up the shutout for UND, scoring with 2:37 remaining in the contest, but North Dakota would get no closer, falling 3-1. UND held a slight, 38-37 advantage in shots on goal, but the Ter-riers’ Matt O’Connor compiled 37 saves to earn the win. Senior netmind-er Clarke Saunders finished with 34 stops in defeat. North Dakota had just two power play chances, failing to convert on either, while BU went 2-for-7 with a man advantage.

Midway through the final frame, UNO added some insurance as junior forward Dominic Zombo slotted a rebound on the power play into the net to secure the 3-1 final. The Mavericks outshot Miami in all three periods for a 43-26 shots on goal advantage, while sophomore netminder Ryan McKay made 40 saves to keep the RedHawks in the contest. ST. CLOUD STATE 6, COLORADO COLLEGE 2

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Senior forward Nic Dowd scored two goals and No. 2/2 St. Cloud State jumped out to a 4-0 lead en route to a 6-2 victory over Colorado College Saturday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in NCHC action. With the win, the Huskies (9-1-2, 4-1-1-0 NCHC), who tied the Tigers (1-8-2, 1-5-2-1 NCHC) in overtime Friday, moved into second place in the conference standings. SCSU wasted little time getting on the board as junior defenseman Andrew Prochno scored just 1:32 into the game. Sophomore forward Jonny Brodzinski then doubled the Huskies’ lead 8:55 into the opening frame. In the second stanza, the teams combined for five goals with St. Cloud State netting the first two off the sticks of freshman forward Ryan Papa and Dowd. The Tigers dented their deficit with just under seven minutes to play in the second period as freshman defenseman Gustav Olofsson scored on the power play for CC. SCSU sophomore forward Da-vid Morley put the Huskies back up by four in the closing minutes of the middle period, but seven ticks later senior forward Jeff Collett answered for the Tigers to make it 5-2. Dowd then capped his night with a power play score late in the final frame to close out the 6-2 win. Morley and Prochno each recorded assists in addition to their goals for two-point nights while sophomore forward Joey Benik dished out a pair of assists for SCSU, as well. WESTERN MICHIGAN 4, MICHIGAN STATE 1

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Senior forward Shane Berschbach tallied three points to lead Western Michigan past former CCHA rival Michigan State, 4-1, Saturday night at Lawson Ice Arena in the second game of the home-and-home series. With the victory, the Broncos (5-5-2, 2-2-0-0 NCHC) completed the weekend sweep of their in-state rival Spartans (3-7-0, 0-0-0 B1G) after a 2-0 win Friday. The Broncos sophomore defenseman Kenney Morrison opened the scoring just 4:09 into the contest on the power play for his first goal of the year, while less than six minutes later junior forward Justin Kovacs doubled WMU’s lead with the eventual game-winner. The Broncos produced two more goals in the second stanza, the first coming on the power play from freshman defenseman Chris Dienes for his first career tally 12:19 into the middle period. Berschbach then made it 4-0 with 2:52 to play in the frame after assisting on WMU’s second and third goals. The Spartans broke up the shutout 7:31 into the third period when Mackenzie MacEachern beat junior goaltender Frank Slubowski, but no more shots would get by him in the 4-1 victory. Kovacs totaled two points on the night, chipping in an assist, while sophomore forward Josh Pitt dished out a pair of helpers for a two-point contest as well. MSU finished with a 29-26 advantage in shots, includ-ing 10-4 over the final 20 minutes, but Slubowski totaled 28 saves to collect the win in his first start after having his 67-game consecutive start streak snapped. Jake Hildebrand finished with 22 stops in defeat for MSU, which went 0-for-5 on the power play. WMU was 2-for-6 with the man advantage.

DENVER 3, AIR FORCE 1

DENVER – Freshman forward Trevor Moore scored a pair of second-peri-od goals to break a 1-1 tie and lead Denver to a 3-1 victory over in-state rival Air Force Saturday night at Magness Arena. On Friday, the Pioneers (7-5-2, 3-2-1-1 NCHC) and Falcons (7-4-1, 4-1-0 AHA) played to a 3-3 overtime tie at the Air Force Academy as DU is now riding a six-game

unbeaten streak (4-0-2). AFA’s Max Hartner opened the scoring 13:49 into the contest, but junior forward Zac Larraza evened the game with a power play goal with only 31 ticks left in the first frame. In the second period Moore took over, striking on the power play just under five minutes into the stanza while he added some breathing room for Denver with less than three minutes to go in the period with his second score of the night. Moore now has five goals in his last four games, while junior forward Daniel Doremus assisted on both of Moore’s goals Saturday. The Falcons pulled their goalie for the extra attacker in the closing minutes, but the Pio-neers fought them off for the 3-1 win. Senior goaltender Sam Brittain compiled 35 saves to earn the win in goal for DU as Air Force outshot Denver, 36-35, on the night. Jason Torf totaled 32 saves for the Falcons in defeat. The Pioneers finished 2-for-4 on the power play while AFA was 0-for-3.

BOSTON UNIVERSITY 3, NORTH DAKOTA 3 (OT)

BOSTON – No. 14/15 North Dakota fired an astounding 58 shots on goal but Boston University received strong goaltending and the two teams each scored one goal in all three periods as the squads played to a 3-3 overtime tie Saturday night at Agganis Arena. UND (4-6-2, 3-5-0-0 NCHC) fell to the Terriers (6-6-1, 2-3-0 HEA), 3-1, in the series opener Friday. BU grabbed the lead first as Garrett Noonan scored on the power play 6:57 into the contest. UND answered less than two minutes later when sophomore forward Bryn Chyzyk found the back of the net. The Terriers again jumped in front on a Nick Roberto goal 6:59 into the second stanza, but once more North Dakota responded, this time doing so just 14 ticks later when junior forward Stephane Pattyn knotted the contest at 2-2. Freshman forward Adam Tambellini put UND in front for the first time early in the third period with a power play tally but Robbie Baillargeon pulled BU even midway through the final frame. After neither team was able to score the rest of regulation, the contest went to over-time and ultimately ended a 3-3 draw after the scoreless extra session. Matt O’Connor made a career-high 55 saves for the Terriers to earn the tie, including 24 saves alone in the third period. Sophomore net-minder Zane Gothberg claimed the tie for UND, totaling 28 saves on 31 Boston shots. Both teams went 1-for-7 on the power play.

SUnday, nov. 24MINNESOTA DULUTH 6, MINNESOTA 2

MINNEAPOLIS – Junior forward Justin Crandall totaled four points, including a pair of goals, and No. 19 Minnesota Duluth scored four power play goals to record a 6-2 upset over No. 1 Minnesota Sunday afternoon at Mariucci Arena in non-conference action. The Bulldogs (6-5-1, 2-2-0-0 NCHC) salvaged a weekend split with their in-state rival Gophers (9-2-1, 0-0-0 B1G), after Minnesota won Friday, 6-1. After scoring the first goal Friday only to have the Golden Gophers score six unanswered, UMD left little to chance on Sunday, tallying three first-period goals. Freshman forward Dominic Toninato opened the scor-ing with UMD’s first short-handed goal of the year 7:47 into the game while sophomore forward Tony Cameranesi made it 2-0 just over two minutes later. Crandall then notched his first goal of the night with 5:33 left in the opening period to make it 3-0 on a power play tally. Minnesota closed the gap to two when Mike Reilly scored a power play goal of his own midway through the second stanza, but soon after sophomore forward Austin Farley and freshman forward Kyle Osterberg each tacked on another power play goal for the Bulldogs within two min-utes of each other to make it 5-1. Crandall capped his four-point night with another man advantage marker just 1:05 into the final frame while UM added its second power play goal midway through the third period but the Gophers would get no closer. The Bulldogs were an impressive 4-of-7 on the power play Sunday while Minnesota was 2-for-10 on its man advantages. The Golden Go-phers did hold a 38-27 advantage in shots but UMD sophomore goalten-der Matt McNeely was up to the task and stopped 36 shots to record the win and hand Minnesota just its second loss of the year. Adam Wilcox took the loss in net for the Gophers making 12 saves on 17 shots in 35 minutes of action before being replaced. Along with his two goals, Crandall handed out a pair of assists as well. Osterberg, Farley and Cameranesi each chipped in two-point nights with a goal and an assist each. Meanwhile, junior forward Caleb Herbert handed out a trio of assists for a three-point night.
