B U L L D O G B I T E STHE SAMFORD YOUTH MOVEMENT

The Bulldogs’ 2013-14 roster is comprised of eight newcomers, six true freshmen, three sophomoresand five juniors. Samford’s lone seniors on the team this season are walk-ons Hamilton Bailey andTony Thompson. Second-year head coach Bennie Seltzer has quickly changed the makeup of theBulldogs’ roster and nine of the team’s extremely talented 16 players are underclassmen.

BULLDOGS TO FACE TRIO OF SWEET 16 TEAMS IN 2013Samford will again square off against some of the toughest teams in the nation this season, three of

which advanced to the Sweet 16 in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. On Friday, Samford will travel toBloomington, Ind., and square off against the 23rd-ranked Indiana Hoosiers.

Last season, Indiana advanced to the Sweet 16 in the East Region where it lost to Syracuse, 61-50.Seltzer, who worked under Indiana head coach Tom Crean for six years, will return to play at IndianaUniversity where he spent four seasons as a key assistant coach.

On Dec. 14, Samford will embark upon a challenging three-game road stretch in which the Bulldogsplay consecutive games at Florida Gulf Coast, Jacksonville University and Marquette. Last season,Florida Gulf Coast proved to be the darling of the NCAA Tournament as the Eagles advanced all theway to the Sweet 16 where they were eventually knocked out by No. 3-seed Florida in the SouthRegion. Marquette advanced to the Elite 8 in last year’s NCAA Tournament. After defeating Miami,71-61, in the East Regional opener, the Golden Eagles were subdued by Syracuse’s match-up zone, 55-39. Samford will face Marquette on Dec. 28, in Milwaukee, Wis.

I N T E N S I T Y - THE SELTZER WAYA key mantra in Samford head coach Bennie Seltzer’s philosophy is Intensity. The Bulldogs’

second-year head coach always played with Intensity throughout his illustrious playing career atWashington State, and he brings that same mindset to Samford University and his Bulldog players.

This season, Samford’s practice shorts have I N T E N S I T Y prominently featured on the backside, because Seltzer wants his players to always be reminded about what it takes to win games.

“ULTIMATE ROAD WARRIORS”At Samford’s annual preseason Media Day, Head Coach Bennie Seltzer mentioned that his players

would have to be “Ultimate Road Warriors” during the Bulldogs’ current six-game road stretch. OnTuesday, Samford lost at UT Arlington, 88-75, and will now continue its arduous road trip with gamesat No. 23 Indiana, Louisiana-Monroe, East Tennessee State, Western Kentucky and Stephen F. Austin.

BENNIE SELTZER - - BIRMINGHAM’S OWNHead Coach Bennie Seltzer returned home to his birthplace of Birmingham, Ala., on April 5,

2012, as he was named Samford’s 27th men’s basketball coach in school history. Seltzer played atParker High School and went on to star collegiately at Washington State. Throughout his coaching career, he has been a key assistant at Indiana, Marquette and Oklahoma.

COMING DOWN TO THE WIRE - - SAMFORD IN CLOSE GAMESAgainst Southern Conference opponents last season, 13 of the Bulldogs’ 19 games were decided

by five points or less. In the final weekend of the regular season, Samford played back-to-back overtime road games at Appalachian State and Western Carolina. It marked the first time in over16 years that the Bulldogs competed in consecutive overtime contests, dating all the way back toJan. 23 and 25, 1997, against Georgia State and Mercer.

DEPTH WILL BE THE KEY FOR THE ‘DOGS IN 2013-14Last season, in Head Coach Bennie Seltzer’s first season at the helm of the Bulldogs, Samford

only played a rotation of seven, possibly eight players. This year, Seltzer will have an abundance oftalent at his disposal as he boasts 16 highly-touted players on the Bulldogs’ roster.

SCOUTING THE COMPETITIONIndiana (2-0), the 23rd-ranked team in nation, is averaging a staggering 86.5 points per game

this season. Additionally, the Hoosiers boast an impressive 55 rebounds per contest and are out-rebounding their opponents by an average of 19.5 boards per game this season. Indiana hasfive players averaging double figures in scoring and is led by Will Sheehey’s 14.5 points per game.

659-STRAIGHT AND STILL COUNTINGThe Bulldogs have made at least one 3-point field goal in 659-consecutive games. The last time

that Samford did not make a 3-point basket was on Jan. 19, 1991, against UTSA. The Bulldogs’streak of having made at least two 3-pointers in a game was snapped on Dec. 13, 2008, againstSaint Louis when Samford turned in a dismal 1-for-14 performance from beyond the arc. TheBulldogs’ streak of 476-straight games with two 3-pointers began Feb. 8, 1992.

UNLV is the national leader in consecutive games with a 3-point field goal as the RunningRebels have made a 3-point basket in 863-straight games dating back to the 1986-87 season.Vanderbilt (857) and Kentucky (855) are the only other two schools that have made at least one 3-point basket since the rule was adopted prior to the 1986 campaign.

RUSSELL WILSON - - “THE SHERIFF”As a senior at Lake Wales High School in Florida, Samford’s Russell Wilson was named

Florida’s 5A Player of the Year and led LWHS to the 5A state championship title. He averaged 13points, six rebounds, seven assists and 3.5 steals per game at Lake Wales High School and helpedguide his squad to a 30-4 overall record and a No. 2 ranking in Florida. Throughout the statetournament, Wilson was dubbed “The Sheriff” because he consistently locked up the opponent’s top offensive player.

BUILDING A BIG-TIME BACKCOURTWith Samford’s up-tempo offense and hardnosed man-to-man defensive mindset, Head Coach

Bennie Seltzer realizes that there will always be a need for quickness, agility and speed on his roster. The Bulldogs’ 2013-14 squad boasts 10 guards, including five players capable of filling thepoint guard position out of the 16-man roster. The only non-guards on the team are forwards EricAdams, Jordan Capps, Tyler Hood, Emeka Ikezu, Tim Williams and center Michael Bradley.

BULLDOGS GARNER PRESEASON ALL-SOCON HONORSSamford placed a pair of Bulldogs on the Preseason All-SoCon Team, which was released on

Oct. 17. Last year, Raijon Kelly earned all-league honors, while teammate Tim Williams wasnamed the league’s Freshman of the Year. In 2012-13, Kelly became Samford’s all-time, single-season leader in assists as he set the school record with 151 and surpassed former Bulldog-greatErvin Terry’s previous-best total of 140. Kelly finished the campaign ranked 12th in the SoCon inscoring at 14.1 points per game and was ranked second in the SoCon with 151 assists for an average of 4.7 per game. Williams, the Bulldogs’ talented 6-foot-8 sophomore from Chicago, Ill.,is coming off a stellar freshman campaign at Samford. What A Difference A Year Can Make - - Shot SelectionPrior to Samford head coach Bennie Seltzer’s arrival in April of 2012, Samford finished the previous

season with 739 attempted 3-point field goals and made 33.4-percent of the attempts. Then, last year, the Bulldogs emphasized an inside presence with Tim Williams and that opened up the 3-point arc. Therefore, Samford finished the year with only 562 attempts, but made 36.1-percent of the shots.

Transitioning Offense - ‘Dogs Take It To HyperdriveSamford fans will notice a much faster paced offense this season. With plenty of depth and a roster

chalk-full of talented guards, the Bulldogs will look to get up and down the court in 2013-14 and create easy buckets in transition. Last season, with only seven or eight players in its rotation, Samfordwas forced to use the shot clock and walk the ball up the floor on its offensive possessions.

The “Pete” - Samford Calls The Pete Hanna Center HomeNov. 15, 2007, marked the dawning of a new era for Samford as the Bulldogs began play in their

brand-new 32-million-dollar Pete Hanna Center. The state-of-the-art 5,000-seat arena was completedin October of 2007 and features new locker rooms, a training room, a weight room and coachesoffices. The Pete Hanna Center, which replaced Samford’s historic 45-year-old Seibert Hall, also houses the University’s recreation center and workout facility. In their Pete Hanna Center debut, theBulldogs dropped an 82-73 decision against perennial NCAA Tournament participant Belmont.
