In 1998, he coached a team of U.S. collegiate players to a bronze medal at a tournament in Russia. From 1987 to '93, Walker was an assistant coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. IUP was ranked number one in the NCAA Division II poll during parts of three seasons while Walker was on the staff.

Before entering the coaching ranks, he enjoyed a playing career that included a one-year stint with the NBA's Phila-delphia 76ers in the mid-1980s. Prior to reaching the NBA, Walker played a total of seven years with various European and U.S. professional basketball leagues. As a collegiate player at Clemson, he helped lead the Tigers to a 23-9 overall record and an Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament during the 1979-80 season. Walker, a 1981 Clemson graduate, played three seasons with the At-lantic Coast Conference school. Keith and wife Kim have three children, Dockery, Zachary and Sawyer. INTERIM HEAD COACH KEITH WALKER

Walker, in his 14th year on the Delaware State University staff, was appointed as interim head coach of the Hornets on Jan. 30, 2014. He joined the team as an assistant coach in July 2000. Walker has worked primarily with

the DSU post players. Last season, Hornet sophomore center Kendall Gray set a team record with 75 blocks. The Hornets recorded 185 blocks during the 2012-13 campaign, the second-best single-season mark in team history. During the 2011-12 season, his work with the Hornet big men was instrumental in the team's school-record 192 blocks, shattering the record previously held by the 1989-90 squad. Delaware State was tops in the MEAC and fifth among all NCAA Division I teams at 6.6 blocks per game last season. In addition, DSU power forward Marques Oliver moved into first place on the team's list for career blocks during the 2011-12 campaign. Oliver finished his career with 222 blocks. Also, Oliver established a team single-season rec-ord with blocks during the 2011-12 campaign. Another Walker pupil, Kendall Gray, had 54 blocks in just 17 games as a freshman that season. Gray was tops in the MEAC and ninth among all NCAA Division I players in blocks (3.2 pg) when he was sidelined with a season-ending knee inju-ry. Walker helped lead the Hornets to three consecutive MEAC regular season titles from 2004 to '07, during which the Hornets posted a league record of 46-8 (.850). The Hornets appeared in three consecutive MEAC Tournament champi-onship games, capturing the title and accompanying NCAA Tournament berth in 2005. The following year, Delaware State defeated Northern Arizona on the road in the National Invitation Tournament for the team's only national post-season win. The Hornets also appeared in the 2007 Nation-al Invitation Tournament. Walker served as head coach at Division II Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C., for seven seasons from 1993 to 2000. He posted a 91-102 overall record at Shaw, including a 21-9 mark and the school‘s first-ever NCAA Tournament berth during the 1994-95 season. He led the team to a 17-9 mark in the 1997-98 campaign. The Bears finished in the Top 10 of the Sheridan Broadcast Network Black College poll dur-ing two of Walker's seasons.

Delaware State forward Tyshawn Bell (jr.) is hoping to carry his recent hot stretch into the MEAC Tournament. Bell has reached double figures in scoring in eight of the last 10 games. He scored 18 points, highlighted by four three-point field goals, vs. UMES in the regular season finale on Mar. 6. Bell was named MEAC Player-of-the-Week on Feb. 17 after scoring 42 points in two games. He was 13-for-20 from the field, including four-of-six from three-point territory, during the stretch. Bell is the Hornets‘ second leading scorer leader at 12.2 points per game, has reached double figures in scoring in 13 of the 16 games he‘s played since missing the St. Francis Brooklyn contest on Dec. 30 due to an ankle injury. Bell scored a career-high 21 points in back-to-back games this season. He scored 21 vs. Savannah State on Feb. 10 (7-9 FGs; 2-2 3pt; 5-5 FTs), and followed that with 21 at Bethune-Cookman the next game (6-11 FGs; 7-8 FTs). Bell also tallied 19 points in the previous game (vs. SC State) to give him 61 during the three-game stretch. Bell is second in the MEAC in free throw shooting (.859; 73-for-85) and second on the team with 40 three-point field goals. As a freshman during the 2011-12 season, Bell was a MEAC All-Rookie selection. He was fifth on the Hornets in scoring (7.2 ppg) and second in three-point field goals (43). Delaware State guard Kendal Williams (jr.) has been a major addition to the Hornets‘ backcourt this season. Williams, a junior college transfer is No. 2 among all MEAC players in three-point percentage (.426; 29-for-68). He has scored in double figures in 10 games, including a string of four straight earlier in the season. Williams is fourth on the Hornets in scoring at 8.4 points per game. points and 4.9 assists (each a team high) during 2012-13 season and helped lead BCCC to 21-10 overall record, a conference title and Region XX Tournament finals last season.

HOME COOKING

Prior to this season, DSU‘s Memorial Hall had been an unfriendly place for Hornet opponents since the 2000-01 season. Despite seven home losses this season (7-7), the Hornets are a solid 111-43 (.721) mark at home since the 2000-01 season. DSU was 8-3 at home during the 2012-13 season. The Hornets were 11-0 at home during the 2002-03 campaign and 9-1 in Memorial Hall during the 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons. The Hornets are 76-22 in Memorial Hall vs. MEAC oppo-nents (.776) since the 2000-01 campaign.

BLOCKS APLENTY

The addition of Kendall Gray to the Hornets two seasons ago has coincided with a big increase in team‘s block total. DSU posted its top two shot block numbers in the last two years. In Gray‘s freshman season of 2011-12, the Hornets recorded a school record 192 blocks. The previous record was 145 by the 1989-90 team. Last season DSU collected 185 blocks, the se-cond-highest total in team history. Gray led the 2012-13 Hornet blockers with a school record 75 during his sophomore year.

HOMEGROWN TALENT

For the first time in recent memory, Delaware is the state with the most num-ber of players on the Hornets‘ roster. The 2013-14 roster includes six First State natives, four of whom are new to the team. Local products Tyshawn Bell (Dover) and Kendall Gray (Dover) are in their third season with the team. They are joined this season by fellow Delawareans Charles Burley (Wilmington), J Walter Lawson (Newark), Jason Owens (Seaford), Ken-dal Williams (Dover).

DSU CAME UP SHORT IN BIG APPLE CLASSIC DEBUT Delaware State‘s first Big Apple Classic appearance ended in heartbreak. The Hornets lost to MEAC

rival Howard 64-62 in over-time at the Barclays Center, home of the NBA‘s Brooklyn Nets on Dec. 15. It marked the first time that the event was held at the Barclays Center. Madison Square Garden was home to the classic its first six years. The classic is New York City‘s first and only HBCU basketball tournament. The two-day event kicked off on Saturday, Dec. 14 with a Leadership Summit and

Sports/Entertainment Symposium at the New York Times building. The weekend also included a step show, drumline competition and college fair.

STINGERS

The Hornets are 5-5 under interim head coach Keith Walker … Kendall Gray has hit 35 of 47 shots from the field (.745) in the last six games.

HOMECOMING HORNETS

Delaware State‘s visit to North Carolina Central on Jan. 18 marked a homecoming for several members of the Hornets‘ men‘s basketball fami-ly. Then DSU head coach Greg Jackson was head coach at NCCU for nine seasons from 1992 to 2000. One of Jackson‘s start players at NCCU is current Eagle head coach Lavelle Moton. The previous seven years, Jackson was an assistant coach for the Eagles under current Delaware State assistant Mike Bernard, who led NCCU to the 1989 NCAA Division II national championship. Another Hornet assistant coach Jerrell Wilkerson served as an assistant under Jackson at NCCU, while DSU Dir. of Basketball Operations Arthur Tyson (NCCU, ‗86) was a star point guard for the Eagles. North Carolina Central celebrated the 25th anniversary of its 1989 national championship during the Jan. 18 DSU contest.

THE NEWCOMERS

Delaware State‘s 2013-14 opening day roster featured nine newcomers, including three junior college transfers and the team‘s first Serbian player. Guards Charles Burley (Cecil CC), Larry Haley (Frederick CC) and Kendal Wil-liams (Baltimore Co. CC) made their Division I debuts this season after first competing at the junior college level. Williams helped lead nearby Dover (Del.) High School to an appearance in the state championship game during his senior year. Burley attended Howard and Glasgow high schools in Delaware before attending college. The Hornets also welcome forward Mrdjan Gasevic to the team this season. Gasevic is a native of Serbia, and attended Creating Young Minds Academy Prep in Irving, Tex., before enrolling at Delaware State. Another former Delaware high school product, forward Jason Owens (Seaford), joins the team this season. The muscular Owns (6-6/230) is expected to provide much needed inside play for the Hornets this season. Guards DeAndre Haywood, Ra-keen Brown and J Walter Lawson are first year collegiate players, while swingman Ashwell Boyd joins the team this season after sitting out the 2012-13 campaign as a freshman redshirt.

TOUGH FOES

Delaware State has faced five teams from top Division I conferences this season, highlighted by a visit to Associated Press preseason No. 7 Oklahoma State. The Cowboys, led by United States Basketball Writers Association Presea-son Player-of-the-Year and the 2012-13 Big 12 Player-of-the-Year Marcus Smart, defeated the Hornets 75-43 on Dec. 17 . The Hornets are 0-2 vs. Atlantic Coast Confer-ence teams this season. DSU fell to Georgia Tech 68-50 on Nov. 11 and dropped a 58-37 decision to Clemson two days later. The Hornets are also 0-2 against Atlantic 10 foes this season. DSU suffered a 94-50 loss to the A10s George Washington on Nov. 19 and fell to Dayton 56-46 on Dec. 4. Dayton was ranked 25th (Associated Press) at the time of the meeting.
