Dear Tiger Fans,

The 2013-14 season is in the books and once again we enjoyed a wonderful year. Our women’s soccer, men’s lacrosse, and volleyball teams all earned NCAA Tournament appearances while individuals from men’s cross country, men’s diving, and women’s swimming all represented the program on the national stage. We are also excited about the performance of our athletes in the classroom. Our graduation rates and team GPAs are outstanding while our Division I teams also posted perfect APR scores. Our students continue to be tremendous representatives of Colorado College.

This annual report is part of our ongoing efforts to bring complete transparency to the operations of the athletics department. As you will note on the following pages, athletics at Colorado College is a lot more than just the varsity sports. With intramurals, club sports, and casual recreation also under the umbrella of Athletics at CC, everyone has a chance to be an athlete at CC. Participation in casual recreation and intramurals is at a record high while our club teams continue to earn national recognition highlighted by our women’s Ultimate Frisbee team’s 9th place finish at the national championships.

We’d also like to use this report to thank the many donors who make it possible for us to serve our students in the athletics programs. Without the generosity of so many alumni, parents, and friends of the college we would not be able to do what we do. Their gifts and established endowments make up a significant portion of our operating budget and we are forever grateful.

It is an exciting time to be at Colorado College. With a new strategic plan, a growing endowment of more than $650M, and an acceptance rate of under 18%, the College is thriving. This is no time to rest on our laurels as we will push to keep improving our programs and our facilities. There is more to be done and we are ready for the challenge. We are all excited about the future of the College and the athletics department. I think you will all agree that it is a great time to be a Tiger!

The Colorado College Athletics Department sponsors 17 varsity programs. Fifteen programs compete at the NCAA Division III level and two compete at the NCAA Division I level. Division III programs are members of the

Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), with the exception of Women’s Lacrosse which competes as an independent. Division I Men’s Ice Hockey program is a member of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC)

and Division I Women’s Soccer program competed as an affiliate member of Conference USA (C-USA) in 2013.

The National Collegiate Hockey Conference facilitates and fosters competitive, academic and operational excellence for its member institutions through the sport of ice hockey. The conference supports a culture of professionalism and integrity, reflecting its commitment to grow the sport of ice hockey while creating a positive experience for the student-athletes and fans it serves.

The National Collegiate Hockey Conference was founded in the summer of 2011 when six institutions bonded together to form a collection of some of the most notable college hockey programs in the nation. Just a few months later, the conference grew to eight teams and established the foundation for this prestigious group of

institutions. Built on the principles of excellence both on and off the ice, the NCHC is committed to fostering an environment of integrity, sportsmanship and competition.

With a solid foundation of institutions rich in tradition and excellence, the National Collegiate Hockey Conference is poised to solidify itself as the premier college hockey conference.

Conference USA’s dedication to excellence has been the league’s guiding principle and remains today a common thread for a promising future. Member institutions are committed to enhancing athletic programs that are immersed in athletic success and academic prowess. C-USA institutions

are among the nation’s best in academic performance among student-athletes, bolstered by the fact that student-athletes at league schools have a higher graduation rate than the general student population. C-USA schools also place a priority on giving back to their communities through volunteer service with local and national organizations.

The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) was formed to provide an association through which the member institutions may encourage organized competition in intercollegiate sports among teams representative of their respective student bodies. Members of this conference share a commit-ment to priority of the overall quality of academic standards and quality educational experiences.

SCAC member institutions are committed to sponsoring a variety of varsity sports to maximize opportunities for student participation. SCAC schools also operate under the principle that participation in sports should be solely from student inter-est and enjoyment of athletic competition, and that no financial aid shall be given to any student which is conditional upon athletic ability or participation in intercollegiate sports.

SCAC member institutions support students in efforts to reach high levels of performance by providing them with adequate facilities, competent coaching and appropriate competitive opportunities with students from similar institutions.

Women’s Soccer Head Coach: Geoff Bennett (10th season)Colorado College finished the season with an overall record of 15-4-3 including an 8-1-1 regular season Conference USA record, successfully defending their title. The Tigers were crowned C-USA Tournament Champions for the first time in program history after scoring three times in the first half and cruising to a 3-0 victory over the University of North Texas. CC earned the conference’s automatic qualifier and played host to Duke in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The team battled to a 1-1 draw before falling in penalty kicks in a game that drew nearly 1800 fans, one of the best-attended games of the tournament. Junior Kaeli Vandersluis was named Midfielder of the Year by Conference USA and was one of

seven Tigers to earn all-conference accolades in a ballot of the head coaches. Vandersluis, junior midfielder Jessie Ayers, senior defender Katie Uyenishi and sophomore goalkeeper Kate Scheele were first-team selections. Senior defender Kecia Morway was named to the second team, while sopho-more midfielder Sarah Schweiss earned third-team honors. Head Coach Geoff Bennett was chosen Coach of the Year by his peers for the second consecutive season. Five Tigers were named to the 2013 NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I All-Central Region Team. Uyenishi, Ayers and Vandersluis earned spots on the first team, while Morway and Scheele were third-team selections. Jessie Ayers and Kecia Morway were also recognized for their academic achievements. Ayers was named to Conference USA’s Women’s Soccer All-Academic first team, while Morway earned a spot on the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District second team.

Men’s Soccer Head Coach: Horst Richardson (48th season)After starting 0-2-2 on the season, the Colorado College Men’s Soccer team Tigers rallied to finish the season 14-6-2. The Tigers placed third in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 11-3 record and fell to Southwestern University in overtime of the semifinal match of the SCAC Tournament. Eight Tigers were honored with All-SCAC recognition. Senior forward Brandon Ogilvie, junior defender Andrew Worthington and freshman midfielder Caden McKenzie were all named to the first team. Senior forward Sean Parham and sophomore midfielder Max Grossenbacher were selected to the second team while junior defender Alec Sowers, sophomore midfielder Seth Newby and freshman defender Christian Wulff received honorable mention accolades. MacKenzie was also selected as the SCAC Newcomer-of-the-Year. For the second year in a row, Colorado College placed three players on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s all-West Region teams. Ogilvie was named to the first team, Worthington earned second team

honors and Parham was a third team selection. Sean Parham was also selected for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar All-West Region first team while Brandon Ogilvie was named a second-team Scholar All-American by the NSCAA. Horst Richardson is among the inductees to the Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame’s Class of 2014 and will be honored during an official ceremony at the Broadmoor World Arena on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014.

Women’s Cross Country Head Coach: Ted Castaneda (22nd season)

Colorado College Women’s Cross Country team captured second in the standings at the 2013 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championships in Shreveport, La. Junior Rebecca Lavietes, in her first year of cross country for CC, covered the 6-kilometer course in 23 minutes and 10.1 seconds to lead a pack of four Tigers earning all-conference honors. Freshman Leah Wessler (23:39.3), Allie Crimmins (23:48.1) and senior Annie Taylor (23:48.6), raced to 11th, 12th and 13th, respectively. Junior captain Erin Morrow established five consecutive season bests and led Colorado College in five of seven races this season. Lavietes capped her sea-son by earning all-region accolades with a 31st-place finish at the NCAA Division III West Region Championships. She also earned individual All-Academic honors from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for the 2013 season and the CC women repeated as recipients of Team All-Academic honors.

Men’s Cross Country Head Coach: Ted Castaneda (22nd season)

The Men’s Cross Country team claimed second place in the 2013 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships. Junior Nick Hall successfully defended his SCAC individual crown and was named SCAC Runner of the Year, while juniors Will Richmond and Graham Frank raced to third and fourth place, respectively. Colorado College freshmen Ezra Coopersmith and Ryan Bing finished ninth and 12th with two more all-SCAC performances. The Tigers finished with 29 points while Trinity University came in first with 28 points. Hall and Frank repeated as all-region selections by finishing among the top 35 individuals at the NCAA Division III West Regional Championships. Hall’s 8K clocking of 25:20.78 was good for an eighth-place individual showing and qualified Nick for the NCAA national meet. He also earned individual All-Academic honors from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for the 2013 season and the CC men repeated as recipients of Team All-Academic honors.

Women’s Volleyball Head Coach: Rick Swan (16th season)

The Colorado College Volleyball team began their season with a 17 game winning streak and made a 16th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament after receiving an at-large-bid. The Tigers advanced to the regional finals and finished the season with a 35-5 record. Sophomore libero Sophie Merrifield broke the school record for the most digs in a single season, finishing with 726 digs. A school record five members of the team earned all-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honors. Leading the way was freshman outside hitter Abbe Holtze, who was named SCAC Freshman of the Year. She was joined on the first team by sophomore setter Devon Lucero and Merrifield. Junior middle hitter and team captain Kristen Liberty and sophomore opposite hitter Courtney Birkett were second-team selections. Birkett and Holtze were American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) all-West Region selections while Merrifield and sophomore outside hitter Emily Phillips received honorable mention accolades. Holtze was also honored as the region’s Freshman of the Year and capped a sensational season by being named a third-team All-American by the AVCA. Birkett received All-American honorable mention accolades.

Men’s Hockey Head Coach: Scott Owens (15th season)

The 2013-14 Colorado College men’s hockey team made their debut as members of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference and reclaimed possession of the coveted Gold Pan by posting a winning record in four meetings with the University of Denver. The Tigers finished the year with an overall record of 7-24-6 and the season ended with a 4-3 loss to University of North Dakota in Game 3 of the NCHC’s inaugural first-round playoff series. Freshman Jaccob Slavin was honored on a national level when he was named to the College Hockey News’ 2013-14 All-Rookie Team. Slavin was also voted Rookie of the Year in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference and was named to both the All-NCHC Second Team and the NCHC All-Rookie teams. Seventeen Tigers, including National Collegiate Hockey Conference Scholar-Athlete Alexander Krushelnyski, emerged as members of the NCHC’s inaugural Academic All-Conference Team, maintaining at least a 3.00 grade-point average for the last two semesters.

Women’s Basketball Head Coach: Liz Doran (6th season)The 2013-14 Women’s Basketball team, returning just five players and no seniors, finished the season with an overall record of 2-24. Facing host Trinity University in the first round of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament, the Tigers fell 79-53. The Tigers were led by junior Courtney Tyus who earned third-team all-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honors for the second year in a row in a ballot of the league’s head coaches. Sophomore forward Danielle Davis, who was an honorable-mention selection, was recognized for the first time. Tyus, one of the SCAC’s top all-around players, ranked among the conference’s overall leaders in several statistical categories. The guard finished the regular season first in assists per game (4.7), second in steals (2.2), ninth in rebounding (6.2), 10th in blocked shots (0.6), 11th in free-throw percentage (.723) and 14th in scoring (12.1). She also was third averaging 34 minutes per contest. She currently holds fifth place on the program’s single-season chart, finishing with 122 assists this season.

Men’s Basketball Head Coach: Andy Partee (8th season)

The Colorado College Men’s Basketball team opened with season with a 5-0 start and earned the program’s first-ever appearance in the D3Hoops.com Top 25 Poll. The Tigers finished the 2013-14 campaign with a 17-8 overall record and claimed fourth in the SCAC’s regular-season standings with a 9-5 mark. CC fell to host Trinity University in the semifinals of the 2014 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament. Senior Ryan Milne and junior Chris Lesnansky were named to the all-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference first team, while sophomore guard Justin Berardino earned honorable-mention recognition in a ballot of the league’s head coaches. Milne was a first-team selection for the third year in a row and finished his career ranked second in program history with 458 assists, fifth with 143 steals and sixth with 1,575 points and 210 three-point baskets. Lesnansky received the distinction for the second time and was the only junior voted to the first team. He scored 20 or more points on 10 occasions, including a career-high 30 in a Feb. 9 victory (70-69) over Texas Lutheran. He also had four games with double-digits.

Women’s Swimming & Diving Head Coach: Anne Goodman James (8th season)

The Women’s Swimming and Diving team finished second place at the 2013 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships for the third consecutive year. Nine Tigers earned All-SCAC accolades. Olivia Dilorati defended her 200 backstroke title, dominating the field with a NCAA ‘B’ cut finishing time of 2:03.92. Senior Brenna Day won her second career 100 free title (2012) with a finishing time of 52.25. In the 200 breast, sophomore Melanie Gillespie finished third in a time of 2:24.97. In the final women’s event of the championships, the Colorado College 400 relay team of Dilorati, Day and sophomores Erin Holmes and Annalise Grigereit picked up the program’s fourth relay win in five attempts, earning a SCAC meet and open record in the process with a finishing time of 3:30.82. The Colorado College coaching staff, led by head coach Anne Goodman James, was named SCAC Women’s Staff-of-the-Year for the second consecutive year. Dilorati held on to maintain an eighth-place finish in the consolation finals of the event at the 2014 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships after smashing her own school record in the 100-meter butterfly. The sophomore posted the 16th fastest time out of 48 participants in the preliminaries with a clocking of 56.57 seconds. Junior Emma Holmes earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-District team. The CC swimming and diving men’s and women’s teams earned Team Scholar All-America honors from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America for both the 2013 fall and 2014 spring semesters.

Men’s Swimming Head Coach: & Diving Anne Goodman James (8th season)

The Men’s Swimming and Diving team finished fourth at 2014 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships. Six Tigers earned All Conference honors. Junior Matthew Nadel finished third in the 1650 freestyle race with a time of 16:58.16. In the 200 backstroke, freshman Daniel Oldendorf earned the victory with a finishing time of 1:53.54. Sophomore Colin Chupik’s 200 butterfly time of 1:53.34 was a NCAA ‘B’ cut. Austin Howlett won the 1-meter board for the second consecutive year but was unable to defend his 3-meter title due to injury. The junior from Makawao, Hawaii has won four of the five conference diving crowns in which he has competed during his three seasons in the league. Howlett is just the third men’s diver to earn SCAC Diver-of-the-Year honors three times in his career. He captured fifth place nationally on the three-meter board at the 2014 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships and earned All-America honors. With a final score of 501.50, he was less than 35 points out of second while improving three spots from his showing of a year ago when he also earned All-America honors in the event with an eighth-place finish. Austin was also honored as a Scholar All-American while sophomore Colin Chupik received honorable mention Scholar All-America recognition. Senior Kaleb Roush earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-District team and was named a 2014 Capital One Academic All-American. Roush was also voted the 2014 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Man of the Year by the league’s senior woman administrators. The SCAC’s most prestigious annual award recognizes senior student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership.

Women’s Lacrosse Head Coach: Susan Stuart (20th season)

Despite featuring a starting lineup that featured a pair of freshman defenders and a first-year starter in goal, the Colorado College Women’s Lacrosse team finished the 2014 season with a 13-6 record, bouncing back from a 7-10 record in 2013. Four Tigers earned a spot on the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association’s all-West Region team. Senior defender Sheridan Gribbon and freshman midfielder Mary Taussig were first-team selections, while senior attackers Elise Burchard and Madeline Scherer were named to the second team. In addition to her first all-region honor, Scherer earned a place among the program’s top offensive players by setting a single-season record with 60 goals and placing fourth on the all-time list with 72 points. She also tied for first on the team with three game winners, which gives her a career total of five. Susan Stuart-Elliott was named West Region Coach of the Year by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association. It marked the fourth time she received the award during her 19-year tenure with the Tigers. She also was honored in 2001, 2004 and 2005. For the fourth year in a row and the ninth time since 2004, the Colorado College Women’s Lacrosse team earned top academic honors from the

Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). CC was one of 125 Division III programs to be named an Academic Honor Squad for maintaining a combined grade-point average of 3.41 during the 2013-14 academic year, which was significantly higher than the minimum required score of 3.0.

Men’s Lacrosse Head Coach: Sean Woods (3rd season)The Men’s Lacrosse team finished the regular season with a 10-6 overall record and won the SCAC regular-season title for the fifth consecutive year. The Tigers also claimed the SCAC Tournament Championship with

a 13-7 victory over Southwestern University. The Tigers earned the program’s second consecutive appearance in the national tournament with an at-large berth for the 2014 NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship. Unfortunately, CC was unable to advance past the first round, dropping a 13-10 decision to Amherst College. Senior attackman Jack Kreitler recorded career highs of 31 goals and 40 points and was named honorable-mention All-American by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA), and was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive

Player of the Year for the second straight season, while Jack McCormick was selected Newcomer of the Year in a ballot of the league’s head coaches. Murphy was joined on

the all-SCAC team by senior attacker Tyler Allen, senior midfielders Will Harris and Jack Kreitler, senior long-stick midfielder P.J. Higgins, senior defender Scott Prior and sophomore defender Tim Jenkins. McCormick was an honorable-mention selection.

Women’s Tennis Head Coach: Anthony Weber (1st season)

The Women’s Tennis team ushered out their 2013-14 season with a 5-1 victory over Southwestern University in the consolation bracket of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships. Led by seniors Maddy Bush and Caila Criss, who celebrated the final matches of their collegiate careers by prevailing in both doubles and singles, Colorado College’s third-place finish at the SCAC tournament was its highest ever. Bush, who teamed up with junior Maggie Harwood for an 8-4 triumph at No. 1 doubles to start the day, returned to the courts to beat SU’s Marieke Visser in straight sets at No. 4 singles (6-2, 6-0) while Criss was bumping off Elizabeth Elllis at No. 3 (6-1, 6-1). Criss and freshman Gillian Hyde earlier posted an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles. Senior Katie Patterson clinched the match by rallying from an opening-set loss to defeat Pirates ace Aimee Blake by a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 count. Patterson was named SCAC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for her outstanding performances against Division II opponents Metropolitan State University of Denver and Colorado Mesa University during the first week of April.

Men’s Tennis Head Coach: Anthony Weber (1st season)The Colorado College Men’s Tennis returned just three players from last year’s team. The Tigers finished the season with a winning 10-9 overall record and battled their way to a third place overall finish in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament. CC fell to Texas Lutheran in the conference semifinals, but made short work of Schreiner University while posting a 5-1 triumph in the consolation round. After dropping a 9-8 (7-5) decision at No. 3 doubles that allowed Schreiner to elude a sweep, freshmen Jason Gutierrez and Levi Kimmel and junior captain Jack Burger secured the match with dominating performances at No. 1, 2 and 3 singles. All three players also emerged victorious in doubles.

Women’s Track & Field Head Coach: Ted Castaneda (22nd season) The Women’s Track and Field team set 45 personal records in 2014 along with 35 season bests. The Colorado College women took away two all-league plaques from the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships. An all-conference performer in cross country as a rookie last fall, Leah Wessler added another highlight to her young career at Colorado College. The freshman posted a personal-record time of 18:46.30 in the 5,000 meters, capturing third place and earning all-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honors again at the 2014 SCAC Track & Field Championships. Joining Wessler with all-SCAC distinction was CC’s 4x100 relay team of Terra McDowell, Sydney Rogalla, Ellie Swanson and Stephanie Wynn which claimed third with a time of 52.44 seconds. Narrowly missing all-league status individually were sophomores Rogalla and McDowell, along with junior Rebecca Lavietes. Rogalla claimed fourth in the 100-meter dash at 12.85 while McDowell took fourth in the triple jump with an effort of 34-5 3/4 inches (10.51) meters as well as fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a clocking of 17.41 seconds. Lavietes, running the 10,000 meters for the first time, was fourth with a 40:16.18. The Colorado College Track and Field team continued their tradition of academic excellence by winning the All-Academic Track & Field Team Award from the United

States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for the 2013-14 academic year.

Men’s Track & Field Head Coach: Ted Castaneda (22nd season)

The Men’s Track and Field team recorded 45 personal bests and 28 season bests during the 2014 season. The Tigers earned five All-Conference finishes at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships. Junior team captain Will Richmond won the 3K Steeplechase and placed second in the 5000 meters, propelling him to one of the highest ever individual point scores in school history. Sophomore transfer Will Harrow finished first in the 110-meter hurdles (17.59) and cleared 19 feet, 11 inches in the long jump, claiming second place to double up on his all-SCAC honors. Junior Graham Frank placed 3rd in the 1500 meters (4:13.80), winning his second career All-Conference award. Just missing the cut, with fourth-place finishes, were junior Sam English and freshman Ryan Bing. English was right behind Frank in the 1,500 at 4:17.70, while Bing posted a personal-best 1:59.78 in the 800 meters. The Colorado College Track and Field team continued their tradition of academic excellence by winning the All-Academic Track & Field Team Award from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for the 2013-14 academic year.

The Women’s Volleyball team began their season with a 17 game

winning streak and made a 16th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament after receiving an at-large-bid.

The Tigers advanced to the regional finals and finished the

season with a 35-5 record, 12-2 in the Southern Collegiate

Athletic Conference.

Colorado College Women’s Soccer team finished the season with an overall record of 15-4-3 including

an 8-1-1 regular season Conference USA record, successfully defending their regular season title and win-ning their first C-USA Tournament Championship. CC earned the con-ference’s automatic qualifier and

played host to Duke in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

The team battled to a 1-1 draw before falling in penalty kicks in a game that drew nearly 1800 fans.

The Men’s Lacrosse team finished the regular season with a 10-6

overall record and won the SCAC regular-season title for the fifth consecutive year. The Tigers also

claimed the SCAC Tournament Championship with a 13-7 victory

over Southwestern University. The Tigers earned the program’s third appearance in the national

tournament with an at-large berth for the 2014 NCAA Division III

Men’s Lacrosse Championship.

Head Women’s Soccer Coach Geoff Bennett was chosen Conference USA Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. Bennett guided the Tigers to an overall record of 15-4-3 including an 8-1-1 regular season Conference USA record, successfully defending their regular season title and winning their first C-USA Tournament Championship. CC earned the conference’s automatic qualifier and played host to Duke in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

Susan Stuart-Elliott was named West Region Coach of the Year by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association after guiding Colorado College to a 13-6 record during the 2014 season. It marked the fourth time Stuart-Elliott received the award during her 19-year tenure with the Tigers and she collected career victory No. 200 with a 17-14 triumph at Drew University on April 17. With 13 wins, the 2014 squad tied for second on the program’s single-season list.

In exclusive voting of the league’s head coaches that took place at the 2014 SCAC Swimming and Diving Championships, the Colorado College coaching staff, consisting of head coach Anne Goodman James, assistant coaches Jess Siegele, Ryan Hogan and diving coach Ellen Walker, was named SCAC Women’s Swimming and Diving Staff-of-the-Year. It marked the third year in a row the staff received the award, winning the Men’s Staff-of-the-Year in 2012 and the Women’s Staff-of-the-Year in 2013.

The athletics marketing staff of Colorado College was the recipient of three awards at the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators' 24th annual convention in Orlando, Fla. The staff is comprised of Associate AD Scott Lowenberg, Director of Athletics Marketing Jessica Bennett and Assistant Director of Athletics Marketing Mike DeMartini.

CC received “gold” in the promotional video category related to its marketing of Tiger Hockey during the 2013-14 season. The team also took second place in the radio commercial category and third place for student promotion.

Initiated in 2003, the NACMA Awards program honors outstanding achievement in marketing and promotions. Colorado College has won a remarkable total of 24 awards the last seven years. An association record of more than 1,000 entries were received for the 2013-14 academic year and, for the fourth year in a row, CC was the only institution from Colorado to emerge as a winner.

The NCAA honored the Colorado College Hockey and Women’s Soccer teams with Public Recognition Awards for achieving an Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the top 10 percent among all Division I teams in their respective sports for the most recent multi-year APR (2009-10 to 2012-13). Both Tiger squads also were recipients a year ago.

Both the CC men and women Cross Country teams repeated as recipients of Team All-Academic honors from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for the the 2013 season. To qualify, a team must collectively post a grade-point average of 3.10 or greater and have competed in at least five

different meets with at least five runners.

Colorado College Volleyball was honored for its outstanding performance in the classroom during the 2013-14 academic year as one of 126 Division III programs that received the Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches

Association. The award, which was first presented in 1993, honors volleyball teams that maintained at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a

4.0 scale, or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

The Colorado College Track and Field teams continued their tradition of academic excellence by winning the All-Academic Track & Field Team Award from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for the 2013-14 academic year. It marked the sixth consecutive

year both CC squads were honored.

The Colorado College Swimming and Diving teams demonstrated their commitment to academic excellence by ranking third and sixth nationally among those earning Team Scholar All-America honors from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America for the 2014 spring semester.

Colorado College was one of three Division III schools, and one of only five overall in all three NCAA divisions, to have both teams receive the CSCAA Team

Scholar All-America Award.

For the fourth year in a row and the ninth time since 2004, the Colorado College Women’s Lacrosse team earned top academic honors from the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). CC was one of 125 Division III programs to be named an Academic Honor Squad for maintaining a combined

grade-point average of 3.41 during the 2013-14 academic year, which was significantly higher than the minimum required score of 3.0.

Colorado College women’s soccer made its 11th appearance overall in the national playoffs and its first at Stewart Field since 1991 when the Tigers played host to Duke University on Saturday, Nov. 16. Colorado College went toe to toe with one of the nation’s elite teams and came within a post-overtime penalty kick of advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament. In what officially goes down as a 1-1 tie against Duke University, the gritty Tigers saw their season come to an end when the Blue Devils prevailed 4-3 in a shootout and escaped jam-packed Stewart Field. An appreciative crowd of 1,739 watched the teams stage a classic battle in which both launched 23 shots and finished with nine on target. Since attaining varsity status in 1978, CC has earned a total of 11 bids including eight years in a row from 1984 through 1991 as well as in 2006, 2012 and again in 2013 under Head Coach Geoff Bennett.

50 years of CC Swimming and Diving were celebrated over Homecoming weekend. The October 12 ceremony featured words from Steve Cross ‘64 and Matt Railey ‘64, members of the team when the pool opened in 1963. Laura Watel from the Schlessman Family Foundation also spoke before alumni swimmers and divers participated alongside current varsity team members in the Alumni Black and Gold meet. The 2013-14 Tiger Hockey campaign was historical in a number of ways. Not only did it mark the Tigers’ debut as a member of the fledgling National Collegiate Hockey Conference, but it was also their 75th overall since the very first game against Giddings Department Store on January 21, 1938. The anniversary was celebrated over the weekend of February 14-15, when Western Michigan University visited the World Arena for a two-game NCHC series. The Tigers wore throwback jerseys, created exclusively for this special anniversary and all hockey alumni in attendance were honored on the ice during the first intermission of the series opener.

Colorado College celebrated 50 years of Men’s Lacrosse and the program’s founder, Doc Stabler during the 2013-2014 campaign. Full of history, Tiger Lacrosse represents the oldest program of any Division III team west of the Mississippi River. Lacrosse alumni and friends joined us for a pre-game reception on May 2 when CC defeated rival Whittier College 11-10 in an overtime thriller. It was a wonderful celebration for fans and alumni, honoring the remarkable program.

Mike Haviland has become Colorado College’s 14th head ice hockey coach. The highly regarded veteran coach with experience

at the NCAA, ECHL, AHL and NHL levels takes over as the 14th coach of the Tigers. “This is a terrific day for Colorado College,” said Ken Ralph, CC’s athletics director. “In Mike Haviland we have hired one of the most successful and widely respected coaches in

the industry. Mike has won championships at multiple levels and has always produced winning programs. He has a deep under-standing of the values of a liberal arts education and respect for the position of this program in the Colorado Springs community. We have aspirations of winning national championships, and I am confident we have found the right coach to turn our vision into reality.”

Joined by the Flood Family, Jack Pottle ’77 cut the ribbon on the new Colorado College Frank Flood Memorial Track as part of this year’s Homecoming activities. Pottle and his wife Judy generously donated the money for the new track and named it after legendary CC coach and mentor, Frank Flood. Also dedicated during 2013 Homecoming weekend was the

Bill “Red” Hay Athletic Performance Suite. Through the generosity of an anonymous gift, this new suite honors the Colorado College hockey legend. Red Hay ’58 and CC hockey captain Eamonn McDermott cut the ribbon.

Mike Haviland named Head Coach Athletics facilities dedicated during Homecoming Weekend

After spending the last two seasons atop Conference USA, the Colorado College women’s soccer team has a new and more challeng-ing mountain to climb. Starting in the fall of 2014, the Tigers will compete as an affiliate member in the Mountain West. The new list

of conference opponents will consist of Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Nevada, New Mexico, San Diego State, San Jose State, UNLV, Utah State and Wyoming. “We love the level of play in the conference,” head coach Geoff Bennett said.” The Mountain West programs know who we are, and we’re familiar with a handful of the teams in the conference. Our goal is to continue to make our program better and hopefully make the Mountain West Conference better.” Colorado College owns an all-time record of 22-9-4 (.686) against current members of the MW.

Hour of Power RelayOn November 12, the Colorado College Swimming

and Diving team participated in the 8th annual Ted Mullin “Leave it in the Pool” Hour of Power Relay

for sarcoma research.

Teddy Bear TossFans threw teddy bears and other stuffed animals onto the ice on Saturday, December 7, during first

intermission of the hockey game. All toys were donated to The Bob Telmosse Foundation.

Tigers Care and ShareOver Thanksgiving weekend

during the hockey games versus New Hampshire, the

team hosted a food drive to benefit the Care and Share

Food Bank for Southern Colorado. This year 591 pounds

of food was collected.

National Girls and Women in Sport DayOn Sunday, February 9, the Colorado College Athletics

Department played host to the National Girls & Women in Sports Day. Representatives from CC’s women’s

swimming and diving, soccer, volleyball, tennis and track teams were present as well as several

National Governing Bodies.

Colorado College supported 13 club sports during the 2013-2014 academic year. The club sport programs place a high degree of emphasis on student initiative, organization, leadership, decision making and team

management. These program elements allow participants to shape their own experience to a much greater degree than any other athletic program at the College.

Colorado College maintains a budget for the operations of recognized club sports on campus. Funding is provided to cover team association dues, tournament fees, referee/official expenses, venue rental fees for

competition, first aid kits and intra-oral safety devices. All other expenses are expected to be paid in full by the club team and its members. Special funding for coaching fees and post-season competition is

determined on a case-by-case basis by the Director of Club Sports and the Director of Athletics.

The Colorado College intramural sports program provides opportunities for all students, faculty and staff to participate in enjoyable, organized recreational activities. Diverse programming is geared towards promoting

healthy lifestyles through physical fitness, social contacts, skill development, and competitive situations. Active participation is encouraged with the goal that the individual will develop an appreciation of the worthy use of

leisure time and a wholesome attitude toward physical activity for recreational purposes throughout life.

Colorado College has been placed as one of the top colleges with the best intramural sports programs according to The Princeton Review (2014 - #13) and BestColleges.com (2013-2014 - #7).

El Pomar Sports CenterThe El Pomar Sports Center houses the athletics department offices as well as J. Juan Reid Area, home court for the CC basketball and volleyball teams, and Schlessman Natatorium. The building also is equipped with an auxiliary gym, deluxe climbing wall space, hockey shooting room, a state-of-the art training area, modern exercise-physiology and biomechanics labs, a weight room exclusively for varsity athletes and the new deluxe fitness center for use by the entire campus community. After 15 months of construction, extensive improvements to the tune of $27 million at the athletic and recreation facilities in Colorado College’s El Pomar Sports Center were com-pleted in spring of 2013. With the recent renovations and addition of the Adam F. Press Fitness Center, it will meet the needs of students, faculty and staff for years to come. The facility originally opened on Dec. 29, 1970, and was a major addition to the campus at the time.

Reid ArenaNamed after the late Juan J. Reid, longtime faculty member, historian and

Director of Athletics at Colorado College, Reid Arena is the home court for CC’s volleyball and basketball teams.The facility features seating for approximately 1,000 spectators with stands on both sides of the main surface as well as above

the east end zone. It is equipped with courtside Internet access, as well as telephone service for visiting radio broadasts and six retractable backboards.

Schlessman NatatoriumStill one of the finest facilities of its type in the Rocky Mountain Region after half a century of existence, Schlessman Natatorium serves as the home for Colorado

College’s varsity swimming and diving teams as well as a recreational facility for the entire campus community. CC’s aquatic complex features 1- and 3-meter maxiflex diving boards above a 14-feet-deep diving well along with the pool’s eight racing lanes.Recent renovations include a new vestibule entrance, new

bleachers and renovated locker rooms.

Jerry Carle Varsity Strength & Conditioning CenterThe Jerry Carle Varsity Strength & Conditioning Center, which opened in

December 2012, is a varsity-only facility located on the first floor of the El Po-mar Sports Center. The expanded training accommodations, which occupy the

spaces formerly housing the Carle Weight Room and the Turf Room, contain state-of the-art cardio machines and free weights, as well as a plyometric

training area and hockey shooting room.

Ritt Kellogg Climbing GymCompleted early in 2013 as part of a $27 million renovation and expansion

project of the El Pomar Sports Center and now 27 feet high, this state-of-the-art facility features 3,500 square feet of climbing surface, 24 rope stations, bouldering caves, natural cracks and a chimney/off-width area. The space is named after the late Ritt Kellogg, who graduated from Colorado College in

1990 with a degree in philosophy.

Adam F. Press Fitness CenterThe Adam F. Press Fitness Center provides a safe, healthy, diverse and

invigorating workout experience for members of the Colorado College community. The Fitness Center features the 3,500-square-foot Smith Cardio

Center, a 4,500-square-foot strength training room, the 1,000-square-foot Louis Multi-Purpose Room, a group exercise studio for yoga and other fitness classes, a full-sized (94’ X 50’) recreational gym, the 27-foot high Ritt Kellogg

Climbing Gym, one squash court and one convertible squash/racquetball court.

Stewart FieldStewart Field has served the needs of baseball, football, lacrosse and soccer

at CC, and has undergone many changes en route to become the current home turf for men’s and women’s varsity soccer as well as the women’s lacrosse

team. The natural-grass playing surface accommodates a regulation-size soccer field. An enclosed two-story press box, which houses a medical

trainer’s room on its lower level, was built at midfield along the west sideline in the late 1990s, and covered benches were added in 2003.

Washburn FieldWashburn Field, full-time stomping ground for the men’s lacrosse team at Colorado College, also serves as part-time home venue for the men’s and

women’s soccer squads, as well as a practice/training facility for track and field. The historic site has been a fixture on the CC campus for more than a century. The new Frank Flood Memorial Track, named after a longtime CC

football assistant and track coach, was resurfaced and improved as part of the project during the summer of 2013. The world-famous summit of Pikes Peak, 14,115 feet above sea level, still dominates the landscape as viewed from the

grandstand on the east sideline. Named after Rev. Phillip Washburn, rector at Grace Episcopal Church and an avid CC football fan. Formerly known as the

oldest of its type west of the MIssissippi River.

Burghart Tennis CourtsThe Burghart Courts, located adjacent to Washburn Field on the Colorado

College campus, provide a home competition site for the Colorado College men’s and women’s tennis teams. The complex can accommodate as many as five matches at once, with convenient entrances to all courts and easy access to indoor locker rooms. In addition to serving as the home facility for varsity

competition, the courts are available for use by the entire campus community.Named after longtime CC supporters Bob and Yolanda Burghart, who both

graduated from the college in the 1920s.

Honnen Ice ArenaThe facility, located just east of the El Pomar Sports Center and the

Schlessman Natatorium, was built in 1963 at a cost of $750,000 by architects Lusk & Wallace of Colorado Springs. It opened on Feb. 5, 1966. It was named

for the main donors: the Edward H. Honnen family of Denver. Both hockey and figure skating are featured at the rink. An individual can find a program to suit their needs from learning to skate to hockey pick-up games and league games.

World ArenaOne of the finest college hockey facilities anywhere, the Colorado Springs

World Arena has been on national display as the site for the NCAA West Regional in 2004 and 2008. It opened its doors as CC’s new home in January

of 1998. And, ever since, the Tigers have strived to take full advantage of their state-of-the-art surroundings. Everything about the facility is first class, and

the Colorado College program is a major benefactor of the amenities. Part of a $58.8 million complex located in the southern end of the city’s business district off Interstate 25, the main arena features an Olympic-size sheet of ice (100 by

200 feet) and officially seats 7,380 spectators for hockey.

350 athletes went through pre-participation exams prior to the start of their respective seasons. These exams include review of current injury status, coordination of physician visits when necessary, and any further testing deemed appropriate by team physicians.

500+ neuropsychological tests were performed.

2,500+ athletic injury evaluations were performed. Since inju-ries occur in varying complexity, each injury must be thoroughly evaluated to determine the severity, how it will effect sport par-ticipation, and need for referral to other medical professionals.

264 medical referrals resulted in a physician office visit.

73 in-house clinic opportunities were available for an athlete to see a physician on campus.

194 medical appointments were completed on campus-free of charge to the student athlete. This is of great value due to the cost savings from not having co-pay responsibilities, no bills generated to insurance and the secondary insurance policy and less time and travel required by student athlete and sports medicine staff. 698 Physical Therapy evaluations and rehabilitation appointments were performed during the 2012-2013 academic year. 149 injury prevention screenings were performed in an effort to reduce the number of significant injuries sustained by athletes.

Team physicians, which include all specialty areas of care, rotate through the Sports Medicine facility on a weekly basis to provide pro bono work at a conservative value of greater than $100,000 per year. To insure optimum communication and continuum of care, each athlete is accompanied by a member of the sports medicine staff to his/her appointment with team physicians and specialists. Sports Medicine continues to attract quality students who have an interest in pursuing careers in the medical and allied health fields and help prepare them for successful admission into MD, DO, PA, PT and RN/NP post graduate schools. In addition to the encouragement that all Sports Medicine student-interns complete the EMT basic course, formal educational modules and in-services have been created to maintain their high level of education.
