ABOUT BLOOMSBURG

Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, is a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Through the stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education.

Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States, and excellence, ranging from its 18 national championships to its international reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff.

About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it’s a busy place — with more than 200 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation center.

The university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through nondegree credit courses, noncredit minicourses, off-campus classes, credit for life experience and distance learning courses on public television.

The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000 people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants, and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town.

The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.

The Nelson Field House, located on Bloomsburg University’s upper campus, serves as home for most of the university’s indoor athletic events.

The facility, constructed in 1971, recently underwent a $13.4 million dollar facelift. Among the renovations to the field house are a new bleacher system for the main gym area, a new scoreboard, a new wrestling room on the lower level of the facility, a new and expanded press box, dedicated locker rooms for each sport, including an expanded football locker room, improved office space and additional storage space. In addition the pool area has been completely renovated with improved lighting, new bleachers, new starting blocks, improved timing system and record board.

The project also provided for enhancements to both the upper and lower entrances that will showcase the awards the teams have won over the last three decades. The project was completed in August of 2009.

2013-14 SEASON PREVIEW

When the Bloomsburg University women’s basketball team last played at Nelson Fieldhouse, it came as one of the most memorable days in program history. The Huskies capped off their second-ever PSAC championship in front of their second packed house in as many nights, knock-ing off nationally-ranked powers Edinboro and Gannon in back-to-back games.

This year’s group has the same goal of returning to those heights, but the fans at Nelson will see a new group of Huskies in a changing of the guard when Bloomsburg opens its home schedule vs. Millersville on Nov. 20.

Last year’s squad finished 24-6 including a 17-5 mark against conference competition, winning the last nine games of the regular season before falling to IUP in the first round of the NCAA Atlantic Regional.

After graduating five seniors from last year’s team, in-cluding four starters from a group which posted a 72-18 record with two NCAA Tournament appearances over the past three seasons, this year’s edition of the Huskies has more to prove than the typical defending conference champ. That special group of seniors ushered in a new era of Bloomsburg women’s basketball, bringing the program back to the top of the PSAC Eastern Division.

“They’re saying this is our turn now,” head coach Bill Cleary said of the returning players. “They’ve been good teammates and now they’re appreciating what the seniors last year did in the past.” With so many changes, much of Cleary’s rotation for the new season remains up in the air. He hopes the Huskies take advantages of the openings as the battles for playing time continues through preseason work and the early por-

tion of the schedule. “There are a lot of minutes to be had. We tell the kids, this is a great time to be part of this program because we just had five kids graduate. Here’s your opportunity to step in and be able to play,” he said. “The question is who is willing to work for those minutes and who will do what is asked of them to get those minutes.” The Huskies were selected second in the PSAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, taking three first-place votes, the most of any team. Millersville ranked first with two first-place tallies while Shippensburg ranked third, also with two top votes. West Chester was fourth and Kutztown stood fifth with two first-place votes. East Stroudsburg, Lock Haven, Mansfield and Cheyney complete the preseason standings. Here’s a look at the breakdown of the 2013-14 Huskies roster:

BACKCOURTThe backcourt is anchored by the lone returning starter from last year’s team, senior Catherine Noack. A pre-season All-PSAC East Team selection, Noack averaged 10.1 points per game along with 2.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.3 steals on average. It was a career year for Noack, who transitioned into a starting role as a junior. “Her shot looks really good right now and she seems really confident,” Cleary said. “She’s adapting into a new role as a leader and is starting to realize she does have that in her.”

Brianna Dudeck joins Noack as the team’s only other senior, averaging 3.1 points and 2.2 rebounds in 28 games a year ago. Her speed and defensive abilities go beyond the stat sheet, however.

2013-14 SEASON PREVIEW

“She’s a kid who hustles 100 percent of the time, that’s who she is,” Cleary said. “She can play 40 minutes every day and not feel fatigued. She is a tireless worker and consummate team player. She’s a relentless defender and her speed is incredible.”

Jocelyn Ford made her Husky debut last year by registering 5.0 points and 2.8 rebounds in a reserve role, appearing in 28 games.

“She sees the floor so well, three or four steps ahead of anyone. She has a natural ability of being in the right place at the right time and putting the ball in the right person’s hands,” Cleary said.

Maggie Borski played in all 30 games last year (2.6 points, 1.4 rebounds) and has made strides through off-season work and preseason practices, Cleary said.

The Huskies will continue to operate with a four guard system which allows Cleary versatility with several players having the ability to run the offense at point guard. Borski, Ford and Taylor Kaminski along with newcomer Morgan Klunk all could run the point at times.

“We have a lot of options there who can do a good job of handling the position,” Cleary said.

Combo guard Marla Simmons has played in all 62 games the past two years. She averaged 4.1 points and 2.3 re-bounds in 14.4 minutes per game a year ago. Her aggres-sive style of play and ability to attack the basket will be counted on in a larger role this season.

“Marla is anxious to prove herself and is ready to step up

and take on new roles,” Cleary said.

Adding depth to the backcourt is a trio of returners in Kaminski, Lauren Nealon and Nicole Southcott. Kaminski and Nealon both saw minutes in 16 games a season ago while Southcott logged time in 11 contests in 2012-13.

“They know what the program is about,” Cleary said of his backcourt players. “They’re expected to lead the younger kids and get them to buy in and execute what we need to do on a daily basis.”

Klunk, a 5-foot-9 freshman, will fight for minutes in her Huskies debut this season as well.

“She’s picked up things extremely quick and has a very high basketball IQ,” Cleary added. “She’s a great pickup for us not just this year but down the line. We can’t wait to see what she’s going to be able to do on a consistent basis.”

Freshman forward Alex Ross also joins the group, bringing speed and athletic ability.

“We are really excited to see what the new freshmen can do for us this year,” Cleary said.

FRONT COURTIf there are opportunities for players to take new roles and run with them in the backcourt, opportunity reigns supreme in the post. “Not to take anything away from the other girls, but these girls have worked the hardest because they know there is an opportunity to play,” Cleary said of the front court.

2013-14 Huskies Basketball8

The Huskies have three post players with the ability to al-ter shots, make the right passes and lengthen possessions with rebounds while creating put-back opportunities. Adreana Sadowski saw the most playing time of the trio last year, playing in 18 contests with 2.6 points and 1.4 rebounds. The 6-foot redshirt sophomore forward brings speed and blocking ability to the post. “She has a great ability to alter shots and that’s just as im-portant as to block shots,” Cleary said. “She runs the floor well and will give us a lot of easy baskets we haven’t had in the past. We’re expecting a lot of big things out of her this year without question.” Erica Maciejewski played in nine games as a freshman last year. Along with Sadowski, Cleary praised her passing ability out of the post. “You can tell the work she’s put in. We’re anxious to see that continue,” he added. Nikki Tamanosky saw time in 11 games last year. “She gives us that physicality that we haven’t had consistently,” Cleary said.

OUTLOOKWhile much has changed with the Huskies from a year ago, they’re not alone in having holes to fill. Many of the PSAC East competitors have their own changes to work through as well in the new campaign. “The East is more wide open than ever since I’ve been here,” Cleary described. “Right now every team in the East lost significant players. Millersville and West Chester are tough year in and year out, Kutztown will be tough. I do believe we will be tough.”

With so many changes this fall, the Huskies are looking toward peaking right about the time they did last season – when the calendar turns to February and early March. “It’s our job to remind them it’s not how you start the race, but how you finish,” Cleary emphasized. “We have a lot of talent in the locker room. Our biggest challenge as a team is going to be adjusting to their new roles and accepting them. When they accept them they’ll be able to make the proper adjustments to be successful. Bloomsburg opens its season with two road games, at Chestnut Hill on Nov. 9 and at Wilmington (Del.) on Nov. 16 before opening at home four days later. “Right now we are not where we need to be. That is OK. That is to be expected with what we have lost,” Cleary added. “The staple of our program has always been to peak toward the end of the season. If we can continue to do that then we will be right there.”

2013-14 COACHING STAFF

2013-14 Huskies Basketball10

Bill Cleary will begin his sixth sea-son as head coach of the Bloomsburg University women’s basketball team in 2013-14. In his five seasons as head coach, Cleary has guided the Huskies to an overall record of 99-45 (.688), in-cluding 72-18 (.800) with two NCAA tournament appearances over the past three seasons.

Cleary came to Bloomsburg after spending five seasons as the head coach of the women’s team at Wilm-ington University in New Castle, Del., where he turned around the struggling program by leading the team from two wins the season prior to his arrival to a school-record 22 wins in 2007-08.

As head coach of Bloomsburg Uni-versity women’s basketball team, Cleary has guided the Huskies to one PSAC championship, two NCAA tournament appearances and three PSAC Eastern Division titles. He also recruited and coached two-time PSAC Eastern Division Athlete of the Year Kelsey Gallagher. Cleary also recruited and coached Dana Wieller, who along with Gallagher would earn PSAC Eastern Division Rookie of the Year honors. During his five years at Bloomsburg, Cleary has recruited and coached three 1,000 point scorers in Gallagher, Wieller and Kayla Oxen-rider.

During the 2012-13 season, Cleary guided the Huskies a third straight PSAC Eastern Division title and

PSAC Championship for the second time in school history with a 74-57 win over nationally-ranked Gannon University. It was the first time since 1989-92 seasons that the team had made consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament. The Huskies were ranked fifth nationally among 287 women’s basketball programs in NCAA Divi-sion II in scoring margin, winning its contests by an average of 16.6 points per game. Wieller and Oxenrider were both named All-PSAC that season. In 2011-12 Cleary brought the women’s basketball program to new heights, guiding the Huskies to the second most wins in school history with a 26-6 record. He coached the Huskies to their second consecu-tive PSAC East title, their first PSAC Championship appearance in 20 years, as well as their first NCAA playoff appearance in 20 years. The Huskies were also ranked 25th nationally, their first national ranking in 10 seasons. Gallagher repeated as PSAC East Ath-lete of the Year, along with a second team Daktronics All-Region selection and Women’s Division II Bulletin All-American third team honors. Wieller was named to the All-PSAC East first team, while Oxenrider picked up sec-ond team accolades. In 2010-11, Cleary led the Huskies a 22-6 record, including winning the PSAC Eastern Division title and a post-season game for the first time since the 2000-01 season. The success earned Cleary PSAC East Coach of the Year honors. Gallagher was named the Athlete of the Year in the PSAC East, along with second team Daktronics All-Region and Women’s Division II Basketball Bulletin honorable mention All-American.

In 2009-10, Cleary coached Blooms-burg to the PSAC playoffs for the first time since 2004-05, with Dana Wieller being named PSAC Eastern Division Rookie of the Year. During Cleary’s first season with the Huskies in 2008-09, he led the team to 11 wins, with Gallagher being named PSAC Eastern Division Rookie of the Year. The 11 wins were the first time in four years the team had won 10 or more games.

As head women’s basketball coach at Wilmington, he helped turnaround the Wildcats’ program from a two-win team into a 20-win team with a record over his final four seasons of 54-60. During his final season in 2007-08, Wilmington finished 22-9 and the Wildcats won the school’s first ever women’s basketball championship when the team won the ECAC Divi-sion II championship. That season, Wilmington was ranked in the NCAA Northeast Regional poll for the first time in school history, including ending the season with a ninth-place ranking.

Prior to taking over at Wilmington, Cleary spent one season as an assis-tant men’s basketball coach at Towson University (MD) and two years as a men’s basketball graduate assistant at Georgia Tech under Paul Hewitt. While at Georgia Tech, Cleary also earned his Master’s Degree in Sports Administration. Cleary is a 1998 graduate of Villanova University with a degree in Political Science. He and his wife Jackie are the parents of two boys, Billy and Chase.

Diane Decker enters her sixth season as an assistant coach with the Bloomsburg University women’s basketball team in 2013-14.

Decker came to Bloomsburg after spending three seasons at East Stroudsburg as an assistant coach. In 2007-08 Decker served as the acting head coach for the Warriors and posted a record of 12-15 and 6-6 in the PSAC East, earning a spot in the PSAC playoffs as the fourth seed from the Eastern Division. During her three seasons with the Warriors the team made the PSAC playoffs each year and in 2006-07 achieved the first 20-win season in 12 years.

Prior to East Stroudsburg, Decker spent three years as head coach at Freedom High School in Bethlehem, where she guided the Patriots to the District XI playoffs each

season. In three years she led the team to a record of 82-15 and coached two 1,000-point scorers.

Decker was a standout player at Marian Catholic High School and Villanova University. The Wildcats played in the NCAA Tournament all four years during her col-lege career, including her sophomore season when they went to the Sweet 16. She was a second team All-Big East selection in 1989 and helped the Wildcats capture the Big East championship in both 1987 and 1988. She also served as team captain her senior year.

At Marian Catholic High School, the Mahanoy City na-tive set the school scoring record with over 2,300 points and also grabbed 1,000 rebounds and was selected honor-able mention All-American by both Converse and USA Today. Marian Catholic won a state title and two district championships during her career, and she was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2006.
