TIDEWATER KNITTING GUILD OF VIRGINIA December 2013 A message from our president Finally, after two years I have finished my 6’4”, size-15-shoe- wearing son’s Virginia Tech knee socks knit on size zero needles and I will never do it again. I feel like they should be framed instead of worn. The Christmas stockings I am knitting this year will be a piece of cake in comparison. I can check that block. I am looking forward to our holiday party at St Mary’s Home (formerly St. Mary’s Home for Disabled Children) on Monday, Dec. 2. ( Eds. note: Please arrive a few minutes early to sign in at the ont desk, and bring a driver’s license or picture ID. Thanks.) We will be collecting knitted items such as hats, slippers, and lap blankets for the children and young adults with disabilities who live at St. Mary’s. If you don’t have time to knit, consider donating other items on their wish list, including batteries, gift certificates to stores and restaurants, craft supplies and fun and comfort items. Visit St. Mary’s website for a wish list, at www.saintmaryshome.org/donate/wish-list. The events for the evening include a potluck with the Guild providing the drinks and main dish and members bringing a side dish or dessert. There will be a game sponsored by our charity committee and an Ugly Christmas Sweater contest. The contest goal is to create a Christmas sweater uglier than the one I had on last year. No rules unless I make them up that night. The tackier, the better. This is a purely subjective contest. A separate email with information has already been sent out and be on the lookout for another before the meeting. Plans are underway for our March 6-9 retreat, so mark your calendars. The price is right, the weekend fun and relaxing, and the only response to that eternal question of what’s for dinner is where to go. Registration forms are out, so get your form and money turned in to reserve your place. Space is limited. I have spent enough time chit -chatting, and I must now return to my holiday knitting. I am not in panic mode yet, but if I get any more major disruptions in my life like having to feed the dogs and my family, I will be there sooner than later. Artist “knits” bowls, socks and more from glass By Jai Essenmacher

! I was captivated by Carol Milne’s knitted glass bowl shown in Vogue Knitting Fall 2013. The glass really looked like knitted stitches, but how could that be? I’ve seen the artists at The Chrysler Glass Studio work with molten, hot glass --- blowing it, shaping it, coloring it, and cutting it. So began my search to unlock Milne’s artistic secrets. !! Starting at Carol Milne’s Facebook page, I found links to a Norwegian televised knitting competition and a photo of a Turkish woman with handmade knits. I could tell I was going to like this woman. Then, I read an interview with the artist who explained in simple terms how she creates her stunning pieces. She uses wax to create a mold, then pours liquid glass into the mold. After the glass cools, she breaks the mold and voila, a knitted glass piece. In addition to bowls, Milne knits glass socks and gloves! OK, so I now feel like I should not complain about any difficulties I might have making socks out of yarn.!! I’m not alone in my admiration of her art. Vogue Knitting editor Trisha Malcolm bought the lead crystal knitted glass bowl featured in her magazine. The manufacturers of Addi Turbo circular knitting needles, Gustav Selter Co. of Germany, commissioned the artist to create a work representing their famous needles knitting a orange-colored project in the round. I wonder if those glass needles worked faster than their nickel-plated counter parts?!! Take a look at Carol Milne’s work online at www.carolmilne.com or on Ravelry by searching for her name in the people category. You also can find her in Vogue Knitting Fall 2013 and Knitting Today June 2013.!!!

! Cheryl is in the process of planning classes for January. If there is a class or workshop you'd like to see, please call (802-9229) or email ([email protected]) me with your ideas.  January is also the perfect time to stay inside with friends and knit.  I'm looking for ideas for knit-alongs. We can schedule them at any time during the weekdays or Tuesday evening. !!

New fall & winter yarns are arriving weekly, so be sure to stop by frequently to see what’s in stock.

Roving reporter: A yarn crawl vacation By Chris Goudeau This year, my mom, her sister, my childhood friend and I went to the Eastern Shore for a week to knit, shop, eat, etc. !

Our first stop was Purls, a yarn shop in Onancock, Va. If you haven’t been in the last two years, the shop has moved from Main Street to 6 North Street. The shop is much larger and Nancy Hershey and her husband were very welcoming and helpful. She has a wonderful selection of yarn. Three of us made purchases. (757) 787-2277 or www.purlsonancock.com$ The second shop visited was Carodan Farm Wool Shop in Chincoteague, Va. This store has moved as well, from Maddox

Street in town to 7151 Horseshoe Drive. The shop is attached to the owner’s home and not easy to find, but we finally did. It is very small but has a good selection of yarns. Three of us made purchases here. (757) 336-0536 or www.carodanfarm.com!

Next on the crawl was Blue Heron Yarns in Easton, M.D., at 8737 Brooks Drive, #108. This was a little hard to find, but we persevered. Oh, their yarns were beautiful! I bought here, one for me and one for a gift for me to make. The owners were not there, but a wonderful woman, think her name was Karen, was very helpful and friendly. (410) 819-0401 or www.blueheronyarns.com! Last, but not least, was A Little Bit Sheepish in Berlin, Md.This was a great shop and a great little town

to visit. Lots of shops, eats and an old hotel. This town is about 20 miles from Ocean City, Md. The shop has been open for a year and is located in a renovated old building; very charming. Owner Brenda Trice has wonderful yarn as well; all four of us bought. Like we need more yarn … . (410) 641-1080 or www.alittlebitsheepish.com$ ‘Til next time!!

Class Descriptions

Homework and Materials list will be sent later Cast On and Bind Off Methods and When to Use Them with Cheryl Moore Ever been baffled by what type of Cast On or Bind Off to use for a project? Patterns generally say CO X number of stitches or BO loosely. That doesn't always work well! Have you ever been disappointed by the CO or BO you've used? Many knitters use only one method of Cast On and it's usually the first one you learned. Same thing when Binding Off. But there are actually several to choose from. This is a workshop where you will learn about and practice several different methods and why you would use them. Reading Knitting Charts with Linda Johnson Using charts for knitting can be confusing. You see 2 or 3 on  one  pattern  page  and  it’s  hard  to  figure  out  which  one  to  use  when. In  this  class  we’ll  look  at  some of the different charts like line by line, every other line, in the round.    You’ll  practice  a  few and learn how to translate each one. Ravelry with Chuck Dunn In its simplest form Ravelry is an online community for knitters, crocheters and other fiber fans. It is a combination of a social networking site, a place to share information about patterns and yarn, a forum and a place to keep records about your stash, your needle collection, your current projects and more. Because Ravelry encompasses such a large scope it's practically impossible to go over everything it has to offer in one day. In our class we will review several areas that will be of most benefit to you right away. We'll go a little deeper into three areas...creating your own project page, how to find a particular pattern and uses for a specific yarn. You will need to bring a laptop or tablet that is capable of connecting to the Wi-Fi (wireless network) provided by the hotel in order to connect with the Ravelry website. Included in the class will be a DVD. Digital copies of all handout materials used during the class will be on the disk, as well as videos of what was covered in class. The Mobius Cast on with Debbie Henderson A Mobius scarf or project is a continuous loop with a twist. Learn a true Mobius cast-on, which gives a twist and when knitting grows from the center out. You will need at least 40-inch circular needles in size 7, 8, 9, or 10 and DK or worsted weight yarn and stitch markers. Reading Your Knitting with Sue Von Ohlsen To be a successful knitter you must be able to identify each stitch you are knitting into. This is especially true for lace knitting and pattern work. This class will teach you to recognize each stitch and keep your patterning lined up. If you are a knitter who counts your stitches to see if you made a mistake you have probably discovered that doesn't always work. This method does. We call it "reading your knitting" because that is exactly what you will do as you work each stitch. This is also a good method for figuring out where you left off in your pattern if you forget what row you are on. People have told me this is a LIFE CHANGING class! Fixing Mistakes Several Rows Down with Sue Von Ohlsen You are admiring your beautiful knitting when you suddenly spot a mistake you made several hours ago. You don't want to rip all that work out. What to do? Fix it from the top down! You will learn to drop your stitches down, fix the error, and pick the stitches back up. We'll start with very basic mistakes and work up to fixing cables that have been turned the wrong way and fixing lace. Using Magic Loop with Cindy Call Magic Loop is a great way to knit in the round with only one long circular. No double points or having to have 2 circulars of the same size. You will cast on and begin knitting a hat using the magic loop method. We'll also look at how to use Magic Loop to knit a sleeve on a top down sweater and knit toe up socks. Please bring a Size 8, 40 inch long circular needle and about 100 yards of worsted weight yarn for the hat. Seaming and Finishing Techniques with Cheryl Moore We'll talk about how seaming can decide if you will wear a garment or not and the importance of blocking your work. You'll learn, explore and practice different methods of seaming using knitting needles, a yarn needle and even a crochet hook. The finishing of a garment or project can actually make or break the over-all look of the work. We'll discuss and learn different edging techniques both knitted and crocheted. Latvian Braids with Chuck Dunn Latvian Braids... A beautiful, intricate looking, yet simple to create multicolor braid that can be added at a host of knitting projects. Learn to create left and right slanting braids and place them at the cuff of mittens, the brim of a hat, or in the ribbing of a sweater.

Page 10: 2013 12 tkgv newsletter

Go with simple one round braids or You can "stack" then one atop the other to obtain amazing effects. Change the direction of the slants on one layer, reverse the colors and the direction of the slant on the second layer and then finish with a repeat of the first braid. You'll be amazed at the results. Learn to do multicolored cast on's and Magic Loop. Then using those skills begin to explore a new world of embellishment with Latvian Braids. You'll even receive a DVD with all the course materials and video of Chuck actually creating a Latvian braid as a teaching aid.
