INSIDE 2 Calendar, Treasurer’s Report, Wellness and Care, Birthdays 3 Charity Knitting: Baby Blankets 4 Meeting Minutes I have been struggling for days to come up with a topic to write about for this newsletter. I am later than usual submitting my letter because I have NOTHING! BLANK! I think the heat has fried not only my garden but my brain as well. Off I went to my yarn room hoping some- thing there will inspire me to write. While I was waiting for inspiration to hit, I decided to explore projects for my holiday knit- ting. I picked up some beautiful yarns on our scavenger hunt and I was ready to get them on needles. Before long I had little piles of yarn and patterns scattered all over the floor with ideas and notes. Though my yarn stash practically fills a room, I never seem to have the right color, nor right weight, nor right amount for the projects I want to make, so a trip to our local yarn shops (again) is on the schedule -- those very same yarn shops that have been teasing us with the new yarns they are getting in this fall. After several focused hours in my yarn room, I am excited about my list of projects and am anxious to get started. However, I am still without a topic for this newsletter. Got any ideas? Debbie Henderson of W isdom St. Mary’s Home would like to thank the generous and talented knitters who have been making beautiful hats, slippers and lap blankets for several years for the children and young adults with disabilities who live at the Home. Adrian (at left in picture) and Braeden (right) recently checked out some of the hats donated by the Tidewater Knitting Guild of Virginia. St. Mary’s cares for about 90 children and young adults, from newborn to 21 years old, so sizes of clothing needed range from infant to adult extra-large. On Sept. 19, St. Mary’s will dedicate The Albero House, a new wing on the Home’s campus that will provide care for up to 12 adults. For more information, see saintmaryshome.org . July has been as busy as ever at TYC and the fun continues with wonderful classes, challenging knit-a-longs, new crochet-a-longs, great yarns on sale, and new yarns from my shopping trip at TNNA. Gorgeous yarns and adorable kits decorate our store. The Laura Nelkin beaded jewelry kits have been a huge hit. We also

have a class scheduled for Aug. 24 with Melissa for the Mudra Cuff. We just received felting kits from Romney Ridge Farms. Everyone needs a felted sheep, pig or frog in his or her life. These adorable kits are quick and fun. Classes will be com-ing, so stay with us on Facebook and Ravelry for more info. New yarns include the latest creation of Made in America Bulky Cotton, new Squoosh FiberArts, wild new colors of Misti’s Pima Silk, new Noro, and the hottest new silk from Un-planned Peacock. Remember, ALL Tahki Stacy Charles and Filtura Di Crosa are still 30 percent off. We recently added some special yarns from SMC and some fantastic sock yarns to the sale aisle. Keep checking in with us as we change the sale yarns daily. Happy Knitting, Andrea

Baby blanket is fun, easy projectfor charity knitting from leftover yarnBy Chris Goudeau

Thank you to all who donated items this last month to your charity. I’m sure they will be very welcomed by that particu-lar organization. As the weather gets warmer and you are looking for smaller projects to do, remember that you can make a child’s hat or a pet blanket out of any of your leftover yarns.

This summer I’m trying to make a dent in my stash. I thought a good way to do it was to make baby blankets. I found an old pattern that I downloaded back in 2004. It is so mindless, all knit stitches. You can now find this free pattern, Garter Stitch Ruffles Baby Blanket by Diane Starke, on Ravelry and at www.knittingonthenet.com/patterns/babyafruffle.htm.

I’m making my second blanket using this pattern now and have made a few changes. Instead of casting on 135, I re-duced it to 100 stitches. Every five ridges, I change needle sizes. This pattern is so nice you could even make a shawl or scarf by reducing the number of cast-on stitches.

Bring your items to be donated locally to the next meeting and we’ll see that they are distributed. Remember to sign the charity knitting log each month when you attend our meetings, or email me at [email protected]. Thank you.

August Monthly Special Visit my webpage to view the complete catalog, the monthly special, or place an order. Should you have any ques-tions, or would like to receive the monthly specials flyers via email, feel free to contact me directly. Five percent of sales will be donated to the Guild.

Are you working on your projects for our 2013 Knitting Contest? Rules are posted on our Ravelry group.

Malabrigo Trunk Show through Aug. 10: The show is impressive, with more than 30 garments and accessories that use Malabrigo Sock, Arroyo, Silky Merino, Rios, Worsted, and Mecha. All of the samples come from the four Malabrigo books; the project that’s generated the most interest so far is the Malabrigo Twist Vest in Book Three. Several of us will be starting a knit- along in late August using it. I’ll send information once we set a firm start date. New Plymouth Yarns: All those luscious yarns from the Plymouth Yarn Tasting are fully stocked. The new lines include Bam-tastic, Johanne, Monte Donegal, and Colca Canyon.  Fibre Company Meadow: The number one popular new yarn listed in Ravelry right now is The Fibre Company Meadow and it’s in stock now in 11 different colors. It’s a two-ply blend of 40 percent merino, 25 percent llama, 20 percent silk, and 15 percent

linen with 545 yards. It’s a perfect combination for softness, sheen, drape, and stitch definition. Ravelry Update: I created a new group on Ravelry called Baa Baa Sheep Friends so we have another venue for sharing ideas, projects, and class and knit-along information. Please join and start sharing your wonderful projects. I am also able to sell pat-terns through in-store sales from Ravelry now. It’s a good way to support your local yarn shop.  August Shawl Exhibition: I’ve already received more than a dozen shawls for the August shawl contest. Don’t forget to come in during August to get inspired and vote for your favorite shawl. After I posted a picture in the shop of Rose’s Cedar Leaf Shawlette someone suggested doing a knit-along, so we’ll be starting one in mid-September.

Thank youto the members of the Guild who have made me feel wel-come in the Tidewater knit-ting community. I look for-

ward to meeting many more of you. Roz Klein

Spring and summer yarns are overflowing!

Come check out the collection of linens, cottons, silks, viscose and blends.

The president opened the July 2013 meeting at 7:12 p.m. and extended birthday greetings for TKGV members celebrating July birthdays. The Welcome chairperson welcomed our guests and new members.

The June 2013 meeting minutes were approved.

The treasurer reported the Guild’s balance as of this meeting is $4,240.

The vice president reminded the Guild of the TKGV Shoulders Bags available for $20 each. They are great for the beach, for knitting projects and for fiber festival trips. In addition, the vice president reminded the Guild she is available for assistance with knitting questions from 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. before every Guild meeting.

The charity chair advised 20 members have contributed knitted items to various charities and yarn was available from Baa Baa Sheep, as well as the Navy Marine Society, for charity knitting projects.

Yarn Shop News:

Baa Baa Sheep: is participating in the Virginia Yarn Club program this summer. Please contact the shop for more details.  The shop is sponsoring a shawl contest in August 2013. Shop customers will vote on the best shawls on display in the shop.

The top three winners will receive gift certificates to the shop.  The shop has new yarns and will host a Malagabrio trunk show.

The Yarn Club: The shop has a double stamp program in July. Customers redeeming a full card of stamps receive 15 percent off an entire order. The shop will receive new yarns and has a lot of yarns at 30 percent off to make room for the new yarns.

Katie Gerwien led the program on yarn storage methods.

The Ways and Means committee conducted the raffle of various donated items.

The Guild enjoyed the show and tell.

The August program will be a demonstration of the tab cast-on method for shawls. Please bring needles and yarn for the demonstration.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:37 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Katie Gerwien
