Big Battlefield Bike Ride 2013 for Help for Heroes

Last week I was privileged to take part in this Bike Ride. All the cyclists taking part met up in a Parisian hotel and spent the first evening getting to know each other and hearing talks from Help for Heroes founders Bryn and Emma Parry, as well as triple paralympic cycling silver medallist Jon-Alan Butterworth and partner Helen Scott - also a paralympian. The ride was officially started in the heart of Paris at Les Invalides, one of the first ever military hospitals dating back to the 17th Century and the Duchess of Cornwall was there to see us off with a royal wave. The 300 riders included a team from USA and Canada although the vast majority were British. Around 50 were former or current service personnel who had been injured in the line of duty. Some were able bodied military men and women or had family serving. Others, like me, were just there to help raise much needed funds for Help for Heroes. Each day we visited places of interest from either WWI or WWII including a number of War Cemeteries. At each point of rememberence, different riders laid a wreath and our Pedalling Padre, Father Roger Dawson would say some simple yet powerful words.Thiepval Memorial was especially moving

and like so many of the War Cemeteries we visited, the sheer size and number of graves were overwhelming, reaffirming that what we were doing for the damaged survivors of conflict was so necessary and that we should all want to look after wounded soldiers, from any war.One young BBBR2013 cyclist I was proud to meet was Josh Boggi, a 27 year old married man with a two year old son. He was my absolute inspiration and whenever I felt overwhelmed, pained and just plain exhausted I’d think "how is Josh?" He was doing exactly the same route and mileage as me, but without the benefit of four working limbs. On New Years Eve 2010 Josh was coming to the end of his third tour of duty in Afghanistan and was out on patrol in Helmand Province. He climbed into a property and stood on a mine. Josh is now a triple amputee, having lost both legs and one arm yet throughout the ride he never once thought about giving up. The final day was amazing, apart from several unexpected little hills thrown in for good measure, successfully making it up Shooters Hill after already clocking up 400miles was quite a buzz and helped us to cover the last few, relatively flat miles like a rocket. At Blackheath, we were joined by cyclists from around the United Kingdom and in our carefully colour co-ordinated ranks, became a moving representation of the H4H logo - awesome. Our numbers grew from 300 to 1500 cyclists and the end result was amazing. This was probably the most challenging experience of my life and I cannot begin to tell you how much it hurt, but being part of BBBR2013 was an absolute honour. Seeing how the support of our nation was really making such a difference was humbling. If you are feeling inspired by Miss Nimmo's efforts and the truly inspiring stories of the wounded soldiers supported by Help for Heroes, it's not to late to donate by following this link http://www.bmycharity.com/carolinenimmo2013

A New Group is FormedSevenoaks Marie Curie

Fundraising GroupMarie Curie is dedicated to caring for those with terminal cancer and other illnesses. They provide free care to around 31,000 people each year, both in their own homes and in Marie Curie Hospices across the UK, along with support for their families. As there is no Government funding, a network of local Marie Curie fundraising groups across the country has been set up to support this work, but until very recently, no such group existed in Sevenoaks and the surrounding area. This has now changed. Our new group is dedicated to raising money by organizing collections, arranging fundraising activities and events and receiving donations on Marie Curie’s behalf. Annually, we will be taking part in the Great Daffodil Appeal, hosting Blooming Great Tea Parties, managing collection tins and street collections, and organizing as many enjoyable and fun local events as we can. We have an active and enthusiastic committee but are always keen to attract helpers. If you would like to learn more, lend a hand with any of our activities or have fundraising ideas you’d like to share, please contact either:Carole Howlett (Chair) at [email protected] Linda Redman (Secretary) at [email protected] look forward to hearing from you.

The Pog Blog – Pog tries yogaI’ve always been a bit of a stress bunny, so last month I thought I’d help myself and went on a Mindfulness and Meditation workshop. It turns out that I’m pretty rubbish when it comes to meditation. What I am worse at though, is knowing when to be quiet. After the first meditation, the teacher asked how we felt it had gone. Everyone looked at their shoes. I felt bad for the teacher because she was so lovely and clearly wanted some sort of participation. So I informed the class that I got distracted by the purple pandas that had appeared behind my closed eyelids. Top Tip: When asked how mediation has gone, that’s probably not the information that you’re being asked for.On the second meditation all I could think about was the fact that the biscuits in the tea break had contained both raisins and chocolate chips. In the same biscuit. What kind of person would do that? The two things are good in individual biscuits, but put them in the same one and your mouth just can’t work out where it’s at. Happily, I thought about it before sharing this with the group and finally managed to keep my mouth shut.Anyway, not to be beaten, I decided to try a slight variation on the workshop and tried a Mindfulness, Meditation and Yoga class. The good news is that there were no purple pandas this time. In fact, I got quite into the meditation. The yoga though, that was a different matter. I liked the names of the poses…the dog, happy cat, angry cat….but then we did one where you stand on one leg with the foot of the other leg on the inner thigh of your balancing leg. Then you’re supposed to lift your arms in the air. As I fell over sideways it was suggested that I just try the leg part and hang on to the wall. I was the only one in the class who had to cling to plaster to stay vertical.Despite that, I really enjoyed it – and am

Ottovoci is a group of four married couples, Bill and Linda Lattimer, Douglas and Vicki Howie, David and Liz Roe and Trevor and Serena Griffiths who like to sing together. They have a varied programme in four-part harmony, which includes anything from Abba to Ave Maria! They will be joined by some of their children; Chris Roe (their musical director) on the piano and his girlfriend Eleanor Janes (soprano), and Olivia Howie (mezzo soprano), who will add to the variety of music with some well-known opera arias/songs from the musicals, and a ‘novel’ rendition of the famous Flower Duet!

now going to weekly classes. I’ve not quite got the hang of it yet – I forget to breathe while I’m trying to get into the right poses, I’ve discovered that it is possible to fall over while kneeling, and I think I need to take an anatomy class after having issues when told to ‘release my sacrum’. It turns out that is entirely different to a scrotum, which was what had confused me. At this point though, things can only improve so I’ll keep trying! Helen http://thepogblog.wordpress.com/

John Rutter is coming to Sevenoaks.Saturday 21st September 2013

John Rutter, one of the world’s most important living composers. is coming to Sevenoaks at the invitation of the Friends of St Mary’s Church Sundridge for a Sing Day. John Rutter is well known to the singing community, most members of choirs would have sung a number of his works including his arrangements of well know pieces and particularly his Gloria, Mass of the Children and Requiem which are widely performed by professional and amateur choirs around the world. The Sing Day will give singers of all standards, from occasional singers to regular choir members the wonderful opportunity to spend time being conducted by John Rutter. The day will consist of singing a wide variety of music, sacred and secular, traditional and recently composed, some of the pieces will be well known to even the occasional singer, some less well known even to regular choristers. The purpose is to inspire and give pleasure to everyone involved and John Rutter has more than enough talent to ensure that each and every singer achieves the most from the day. Everyone will undoubtedly benefit from the experience, they will be better informed and probably a better singer. The Sing Day will be held in St Nicholas Church Sevenoaks, with registration from 10.00am and the day will finish at 5.00pm. The cost for the day is £20.00, including tea or coffee at the lunch and afternoon breaks and the music for the day. Places or further enquires via e-mail to [email protected] John Rutter was born in London in 1945 and received his first musical education as a chorister at Highgate School going on to study music at Clare College, Cambridge, where he both wrote his first published compositions and conducted his first recording while still a student. His compositional career has embraced both large and small-scale choral works, orchestral and instrumental pieces, a piano concerto, two children’s operas, music for television, and specialist writing for such groups as the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and the King’s Singers. His larger choral works, Gloria (1974), Requiem (1985), Magnificat (1990), Psalmfest (1993) and Mass of the Children (2003) have been performed many times in Britain, North America, and a growing number of other countries. He co-edited four volumes in the Carols for Choirs series with Sir David Willcocks, and, more recently, has edited the first two volumes in the new Oxford Choral Classics series, Opera Choruses (1995) and European Sacred Music (1996).From 1975 to 1979 he was Director of Music at Clare College, whose choir he directed in a number of broadcasts and recordings. After giving up the Clare post to allow more time for composition, he formed the Cambridge Singers as a professional chamber choir primarily dedicated to recording, and he now divides his time between composition and conducting. He has guest-conducted or lectured at many concert halls, universities, churches, music festivals, and conferences in Europe, Africa, North and Central America and Australasia and in 1980 he was made an honorary Fellow of Westminster Choir College, Princeton, and in 1988 a Fellow of the Guild of Church Musicians. In 1996 the Archbishop of Canterbury conferred a Lambeth Doctorate of Music upon him in recognition of his contribution to church music.John Rutter was honoured in the 2007 Queen’s New Year Honours List, being awarded a CBE for services to music. The Pre-Raphaelites inSevenoaks - Part Two

In the May edition of the Advertiser, we looked at the visit to Sevenoaks by the fa-mous Pre-Raphaelite painters Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Holman Hunt. There was a sequel to all this Sevenoaks activity at the end of the decade. We have already seen that Sir John Millais (as he became later) knew all about his friends‘ trip to Sevenoaks, although it is not clear whether he too visited them there at the time. But in 1863, after he had married Ruskin‘s former wife Effie Grey, Millais wanted a proper setting for his painting ‘St Agnes Eve‘ for which - says the old Tate catalogue - ‘Effie modelled the heroine Madeline, who undresses in the moonlight, watched secretly by her lover Porphyro‘. They stayed together in Sevenoaks through-out that December at ‘a wayside hostelry’. As Lord Sackville confirms in his recent book ‘Inheritance‘, this scene was painted in the King‘s Bedroom at Knole, then ‘a large house tenanted only by a caretaker’, as Millais’ daughter later described it. Here again the weather took its toll. She goes on, ‘a death-like stillness pervaded the apartment. - a silence that might be felt at

the midnight hour when the moonlight was streaming in through the window and no fire was burning on the hearth. And yet that was the time when the picture must be painted - that and a few hours later - otherwise the exact direction of the moonbeams falling on the figure could not be caught. No wonder, then, that my father, though by no means a nervous man, was sensible of a high state of tension while sitting at his work for three nights in succession among such weird and comfortless surroundings. My mother, for it was she who sat for the figure, was similarly affected, while her discomfort during those weary hours may readily be imagined. Think of the slender garments in which the figure is draped, the bodice unlaced, the room unheated; and this in the depth of winter! No wonder that she was accustomed to speak of it afterwards as the severest task she ever undertook’. But the picture was a great success, and later found its way into the Royal Collection, although it has had to be rescued from the Tate reserve for this exhibition.Other echoes of the PRB trip to Knole Park also followed as late as 1881, when Rossetti’s sister Christina (poet and painter herself) came back to Sevenoaks. As our earlier article in the December 2012 Advertiser explained, she wanted a house where her sick brother could come to convalesce in the country. After looking at several, including one she liked, now identified as The Grey House in Church Street, Seal, next door to the vicarage, she wrote to her brother on 22 July 1881: ‘Knole Park is not open to visitors in carriages, only to pedestrians - but one may drive through Wildernesse Park, and pretty it is … and there is a quiet, pretty village named Seal. I wonder whether you recollect any of this?’ and she then sent him details of the house. But alas Rossetti did not like the idea of living next door to the vicar and never returned to Seal.

SHIPBOURNE FARMER’S MARKETThis weather just can’t carry on !!. This time last year we wrote ‘Hopefully by the time you are reading this you are basking in the summer heat and the cold and rain we had in June is just a distant memory !’ No change there then !!! (Apart from the fact the average temperature for the first 6 months this year is even colder and has slowed down spring and the start of summer even more). However we are now seeing a complete mixture of spring and summer produce. In June you could buy rhubarb, strawberries and raspberries together with broad beans and peas !!!The weather (together with the economic climate) has had a major impact on market this year. Overall numbers are down by over 10% vs. 2012 (which was 7% down from 2011) and the average spend is also down. The miserable weather gets customers out of the habit of doing their weekly shop at the market. HOWEVER !! July will bring more summer fruit, beans and peas, salads and courgettes. Because of the longer and slower growing season the flavours and textures will be better and far exceed anything you get at the supermarket!. Summer leaves such as spinach, watercress and varieties of lettuces can be used in salads, sandwiches and with grilled and barbecued meats and fish. And don’t forget to use lots of lovely summer herbs which are all at their very best now. Cherries will be late this year but again will be worth waiting for with taste far better the fluffy versions imported from other continents. Flavour is also key when selecting strawberries take the opportunity to taste a selection before you buy. Once again you’ll soon realize the supermarkets just can’t compete!Crab is one of the season’s great treats – serve a ready dressed crab with buttered new potatoes, crisp lettuce such as Cos or little gem and a large dollop of the best mayonnaise (made with local free-range eggs and cold pressed rapeseed oil). Salmon, mackerel and spanking fresh sardines

are all excellent at this time of year and cook well on the barbecue (their natural oils stop the flesh drying out). Towards the end of the month Annabelle will have spring lamb. Try a slightly more fatty cut such as shoulder which cooks well cubed for kebabs whilst a whole butterflied leg is another bbq champion ideal for serving at a large summer party. Locally reared beef and pork will be at its most succulent as animals benefit from the lush grass. Here’s the perfect recipe to round off a summer party in the garden. Lavender panna cotta with raspberries and blueberriesOne of the best uses I’ve found for flower sugars is in creamy desserts such as this panna cotta. Use your flavoured sugar to flavour custard and other creamy desserts such as crème brulee

Serves 6 : Preparation time 15 minutes: Chilling time At least 3 hours or overnight• 300ml double cream• 300ml full cream milk• 50g lavender sugar (* see recipe below)• 2 sheets gelatine or 2 tsp powdered gelatine• 450g fresh raspberries, washed1 Line six ramekins with cling film and place on a tray. Heat the cream and milk together with the lavender sugar in a pan until just reaching simmering point. Remove from the heat.2 If using sheet gelatine place in a bowl of cold water and leave to soak for 5 minutes. Squeeze out the water and stir into the warmed cream mixture until melted. For powdered gelatine, sprinkle the gelatine over two tablespoons of water in a ramekin and leave until it becomes spongy. Sit the ramekin in a pan of simmering water and melt very gently. Stir into the warmed cream.3 Pour the mixture into the lined ramekins, leave to cool then transfer to the fridge to chill. Leave for at least 3 hours until set or overnight.4 Just before serving turn the panna cotta out onto individual serving plates and serve with the raspberries. You can decorate with sugared lavender flowers if desired.(*) For sugared flowers, pick clean perfect flower heads or petals. Dip into lightly whisked egg white and then into caster sugar to lightly coat. Leave on sheets of baking parchment to dry.
