I havebeen producing the Roundup since September of 2005, and have determined I can no longermake the commitment. It has been easy and fun to send out the Roundup quarterly I alwaysknow what is going on in our large chapter, and feel inspired by the people I have met along theway. As well, it has been a pleasure to serve on the board. Elections are held in odd-numbered years for all offices. All officers will run for re-election totheir positions except myself. Find inserted a copy of our Chapter Guidelines. Please take thetime to read through them and see if you or someone you know would consider the position ofNewsletter Editor. Te term will run to June 31, 2015. You can alert any board member (emaillisted at left & below)of nomination for this position. Due to unforeseen circumstances, there will not be a September Issue of the Book ArtRoundup. Note that many classes and goings-on are listed through November to alert youto upcoming possibilites. I have agreed to produce the Winter/December Issue, wherein allmembers can read about nominated persons and will have a chance to vote. | from the Chapter Chair in Salt Lake City

Greetings from Salt Lake. I am working on scheduling our next meeting. Ink Run Press in the Salt LakeAvenues has volunteered to be our next location (late August or early September). If you know of or would like tovolunteer a book or bookbinding location for a GBW gathering please let me know. Several binders expressed interestin having Jim Croft teach a workshop in the fall. I am working with him and Ink Run Press to find a date for a toolmaking workshop. I would also like to have a Rocky Mountain Chapter Member Exhibit early next year that will be

shared between Utah and Colorado, with all chapter members able to enter a book or two. I hope to see you in Washington D.C., Ethan Ensign [email protected]

    | from the Chapter Chair in DenverDear Rocky Mountain Chapter Members, Greetings. Forest fires are again bringing danger to Colorado this year, and anxieties are high. I hope you alstay safe. Te Rocky Mountain Chapter has some exciting events on the horizon (pardon the pun).We are lookingforward to the opening of the GBW Horizon exhibit at the Penrose Library at the University of Denver. An opening

reception will be held August 8 at 6:00 p.m. in the Anderson Academic Commons, with our own Emily ipps asthe speaker. We plan to have a short Chapter meeting prior to the opening talk in Room 212, at 5:30, right near theexhibit. I hope many of you will be able to attend. Kylin Lee will present a workshop, Te Flex Spine Album and Contemporary Approaches to Codex Structures, onJuly 20 & 21, at the Ewing Farm in Lafayette. Details can be seen on the Rocky Mountain Chapter Facebook pagewww.facebook.com/Denver.RMC.GBW. Tis past spring included the sewing structure workshop by Kitty Maryatt, Let Me Count the Ways,in Denverin early March, as well as a talk in Boulder at the end of February by Kitty Maryatt and Sammy Lee, Joining Forces.I was unable to attend, but am so grateful that we were able to host both of these great events in our region. Also, member Gail Lindley of Denver Bookbinding Company arranged with Bemis Library in Littleton, formember work to be displayed in April. She and Sammy Lee collected member books and helped with the installation

of the exhibit. Tanks to both of them for their efforts to make this happen. Sammy Lee, Karen Jones and I represented the Rocky Mountain Chapter at the Gathering of the Guildsthatwas held at the Boettcher Mansion in Golden on April 27. It was an opportunity to join other arts and crafts guildsfrom the region to demonstrate and show work to the public. Sammy demonstrated Joomchi, a traditional Koreanmethod of making textured decorative papers using just Hanji papers (Korean handmade mulberry papers) andwaterreally beautiful and unique. I demonstrated sewing a book on cords. Tis is an annual event, and I encourageour members to participate with us next year. It is a chance to sell our work, educate the public about our work andcreate an awareness about book arts. (Plus, the setting is gorgeous!) Because our Chapter is so spread out, we focus mostly on workshops and exhibits in the Salt Lake City andDenver regions. We hope that members who live outside these areas are willing and able to travel to participate in theseevents. We have a vibrant Facebook page that Sammy Lee keeps up that gives updates of Chapter happenings in theDenver area. And we have our newsletter, the Rocky Mountain Roundup. Im really impressed with the caliber ofworkshops and exhibits that our Chapter presents. Tere are superb things happening in our Chapter. Are there thingwe want our Chapter to focus on that are currently not offered? Please let Ethan and me know if you have ideas toshare. If we wish to inject greater energy into our Chapter we need the involvement of our members. Perhaps we candiscuss ways to use social media to provide more perks for our members and to get more members involvedmaybea webpage that features member work; a blog for members, etc. I need help hereI am not aware of all the tools outthere that can bring us together, help us support and encourage each other and showcase our work. Mostly, I wouldlike you to be glad to be a part of the Rocky Mountain Chapter. Warm Regards, Pamela rain Leutz [email protected]

    Bookbindingin the Quaint Village

of Loket, Czech Republicby Pamela Train Luetz

I am back from a richly memorable trip to Loket, CzechRepublic, where three other bookbinding friends and I were given the

opportunity to learn about miniature limited edition books with designbookbinder Jarmila Sobota. Jarmila is a fabulous designer, bookbinderand teacher, and is the wife of the late great bookbinder, Jan Sobota. Her unique limited edition miniature design bindings are popular withminiature book collectors. During our time with Jarmila, we learned theprocess: developing an ideawhat story to pick, how to use materialsand design to depict it in a way that is intriguing; nding the resources for the projectunusualpieces that will be part of the design, arranging laser cutting or die cutting, deciding on materials and

what will work for the project; as well as the laying out of the text using specic software, printingcollating, trimming, sewing and binding. It is a complex and exciting process and we were so inspired

by working with her.The experience of being there was enchanting. We stayed in a quaint pensionthat provided

comfortable rooms and hearty breakfasts, as well as a restaurant with some of the best meals Iveever had (except for those prepared by Jarmila, who is the best cook ever!). After breakfast we walkedthe short distance along a cobblestone street and through a short tunnel that spilled out to a large gatethat appears to be an open wooden book (see below). The door to the home is just beyond the bookgate. We would enter, hang up our coats (it was chilly and drizzly much of the time), greet Jarmilaand her son, Michal, and get started working at the bench in the middle of the room. Surrounding us

were handle tools neatly lined up on one wall, snake skins, sh skins and all kinds of exotic skins on

another wall, skins of leather hanging in another area, paper trays, a board shear, a backing press, astanding press, and a shelf unit with Jarmilas projects. We would work all morning, break for a lunchat thepensionrestaurant, return to work and then enjoy dinner together, often prepared by Jarmila

The days seemed to y by.We visited the village library housed in the reconstructed baroque town hall. A part of the

library features displays of bookbindingsrestored medieval bindings, as well as bindings ofcontemporary Czech and foreign bookbinders. We were amazed at the remarkable bindings fromso many well known contemporary bookbinders. A couple of us also took the opportunity to visitone of the prettiest towns Ive ever seen, Karlovy Vary. I never tire of visiting this historic spa town

with abundant curative springs, situated on the Ohe River. The Ohe River valley runs from Karlovy

Vary to Loket through protected forest land and is stunninglybeautiful. Mostly I enjoyed the relationships created and nurturedduring this time in Loket. I loved the walking, talking, eating, drinking, dancing and working with Jarmila and her son,Michal, with my three friends, with the friendly and generouspeople who worked at thepension, and with the Czech people

we encountered. My life is always somehow altered for thegood by my visits to the Sobota home in Loket, and this wasno exception.
