The Start of the Program’s 4th Academic Year

In September, the I/O Doctoral Program began its 4th year and welcomed six new students as the 2015 cohort. This new cohort boosts the program’s number to 16. The 3rd year cohort completed their comprehensive exams during the three days leading up to the new school year, just in time to help the 2nd year cohort mentor and socialize the newcomers. Our program as a whole continues to work together to enhance research and practice within the field of I/O Psychology.

Special Events Our program has been involved in several

interesting events this year.

Fall Retreat in Natchitoches

During the second weekend of the fall quarter, our students and faculty headed off for the historic town of Natchitoches, LA. Two bed and breakfasts were rented for us to make our home away from home. The students stayed at Sweet Cane Inn and the faculty at Violet Hill across the street. Both homes were full of southern charm and history. Being only a block from downtown Natchitoches, we walked to dinner at Papa’s Friday night. A band was playing and the singer had us up and out of our seats dancing!

After dinner, we enjoyed some time dancing on the Cane River at the Meat Pie Festival. Saturday, the students went on a boat trip on the Red River to get some sunshine and see Louisiana’s beautiful terrain. We enjoyed a privately-catered dinner Saturday night at The Kitchen followed by a game of charades. The weekend was an excellent opportunity for incoming students to get to know the second and third year students and faculty.

27th Annual SIOP Conference in San Diego

Looking Forward Next year, SIOP’s Annual Conference will be held

in Houston, TX The students and faculty have all submitted several

entries for the upcoming SIOP conference and are looking forward to more professional experiences and opportunities. This conference is a unique occasion for the students and faculty to further relationships and to broaden their knowledge within the field of I/O Psychology.

The Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology is a professional association with a mission to “enhance human well-being and performance in organizational and work settings by promoting the science, practice, and teaching of industrial-organizational psychology” (http://www.siop.org). Last April, the Industrial/Organizational Psychology Program attended SIOP’s 27th annual conference in San Diego. Throughout the conference, members were provided with the opportunity to network and speak with leaders in the field and attend symposiums aligned with their own research interests. Several of our students and faculty members presented their research in the poster sessions. Frank Igou and Mitzi Desselles received a Top Poster award for their poster, A Comparison of Top-Down and SED Selection Protocols. The students and faculty hosted a successful SIOP party at the House of Blues along with Minnesota State University’s program (special thanks to Dr. Dan Sachau!!). This gathering was an excellent networking opportunity where our students met many professionals in the field and students from other programs.

Recent News

The Opening of the AROS Building

AROS Consulting is excited to announce the grand opening of our new facility. The building, located adjacent to Tech’s campus, includes conference space, kitchen, individual offices, and a computer lab. Last spring, our recent alumnus, Dr. Luke Simmering, explained how our program can “begin offering enhanced services to our clients now that we have a facility we can call our own. We’ve already begun teleconferencing with clients all over the world in our new meeting space.”

Our First Graduate

This past summer, Luke Simmering made history by becoming the first graduate of the Louisiana Tech I/O Ph.D. program. Luke’s dissertation research investigated the detection of deception on personality tests using eye-tracking technology to measure applicant faking. Since graduating, Luke has moved on to an exciting position as an internal consultant for Wal-Mart. When asked how the program prepared him for the transition from student to professional consultant, Luke stated:

“ A Ph.D. in I/O from Tech provided academic credibility, to be sure. However, I’ve found the professional experience I gained by participating in AROS projects to be equally valuable. AROS really allowed me to hone my project management skills and consulting acumen such that I was able to immediately contribute to the goals of the Wal-Mart Global Organizational Effectiveness team. Overall, my transition to the workplace has been relatively seamless due to the strong academic and professional training I received while at Louisiana Tech.”

We are all very proud of Luke’s academic accomplishments and look forward to following his future professional endeavors.

Alumni Report The difficulty of data collection, the labor of paper writing, and the inevitable all-nighters are all in hopes that one day, the hard work will pay off! Luke “Golf Digest” Simmering, John “Superman” Buckner V, and Cole “Ray Ban” Napper would say that their hard work in the doctoral program has definitely paid off for them. After leaving the campus of Louisiana Tech, these alumni went off to Bentonville, Detroit, and Raleigh where they have begun their professional careers.

Luke Simmering, our program’s first graduate, is working as an OD consultant at Wal-Mart’s corporate headquarters. He aids in the organizational design process for various departments and helps develop new positions across the globe. He also facilitates the selection and development of employees.

John Buckner recently defended his dissertation and was able to move back a little closer to home, taking a job in the greater Detroit area with AlixPartners as an Assessment Specialist. He is responsible for interpreting job candidates’ assessment results and creating integrative reports for hiring managers.

Cole Napper, who also recently defended his dissertation, took a position as a Behavioral Scientist and Research Manager at RTI, working on contracts with the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security and Labor.

These alumni have reported that our doctoral program prepared them for the meaningful work they are doing today. Of course, they are missed by the students who are still pulling the all-nighters, but their success gives us the assurance that our efforts are not in vain.

Rocking Vegas at the IPAC Conference

The International Personnel Assessment Council held their 2012 Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. With seven presentations accepted at the conference, our presence was very strong, and many professionals from around the country were impressed with our program. The keynote speakers at the conference included several prominent I/O psychologists: Wayne Cascio, David Campbell, Kevin Murphy, Scott Highhouse, and Rob Ployhart. The conference was a great opportunity to learn from others and also to present our own research and interests. The social activities during the conference allowed our students to network and meet other I-O professionals. We enjoyed the city of Las Vegas, and we are looking forward to next year’s IPAC conference in Columbus, Ohio!

Meet Our Students… Evan Theys Evan is from Howell, MI and has a BA in Psychology from Oakland University. He is currently a first year PhD student researching the applications of reversal theory in Industrial-Organizational psychology. More specifically, Evan is researching the effects of the athlete-coach dyad on leadership style. Fun Fact: Evan is a diehard Detroit sports fan!

Lindsey Anderson Lindsey is originally from Henderson, TX and received a BS in Psychology and a BA in Sociology from Louisiana State University in Shreveport. She worked as a Clinical Research Coordinator in Psychiatry before pursuing her PhD. Her current research interests include the effects of ageism on employee selection, banding and rater effects, as well as, shift work and employee wellness. Fun Fact: Lindsey's favorite pastime is watching baseball. Go Yanks!!

Richard Chambers Richard hails from the Minneapolis/St. Paul region of Minnesota. He has a BS in Psychology and Business from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. This is his first year in the I/O PhD program. Current research interests include technology and counter productive work behavior as well as alternative methods of intelligence assessment. Fun Fact: Richard has a black belt in MMA and has played in the world cup

of paintball.

Bharati Belwalker

Bharati is originally from Mumbai, India. She has Masters degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Florida Institute of Technology and is currently pursuing her doctoral studies here at Louisiana Tech. Her areas of interest are employee selection, psychometrics, and cross-cultural work behaviors. Fun Fact: Bharati can speak four languages fluently.

William Scanu

William is originally from Genova, Italy and has a BS in Psychology and BA in Sociology from the University of Georgia. Currently he is a first year PhD student researching the relationship between personality and social influence techniques Fun Fact: William is a poker aficionado!

Brandon Dennis

Brandon is from Murray, Utah. He has completed his BA in Psychology and History from Utah Valley University. He completed a MA in Counseling Psychology from Forest Institute of Professional Psychology in Springfield, Missouri. He is a first year student at Louisiana Tech in the I/O PhD program. Research interests include emotional labor and leadership. Fun Fact: Brandon lived in Spain for two years.

Christopher Huynh Christopher is from Houston, TX and currently holds a BS in Psychology from the University of Houston. He is currently a second year PhD student interested in research topics regarding climate, culture, ethics, and emotional labor. Fun Fact: Christopher loves to cook in his spare time.

Brittani Plaisance

Brittani is from Thibodaux, LA and has a BS in Psychology and MS in Economic Development from the University of Southern Mississippi. Currently she is a second year PhD student and her research interests include personality and cognitive ability, criterion-validity of football recruitment websites, project evaluation, and process-mapping. Fun Fact: Brittani is a Harry Potter expert and can tell you anything you want to know!

Ann-Marie was born and raised in Bunkie, LA and received her BS in Psychology from the College of Charleston in South Carolina. She completed her Masters of Arts in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Louisiana Tech University in 2011 and is now in her second year of the PhD program. Currently, she is researching emotions and job satisfaction through a reversal theory perspective. Fun Fact: Ann-Marie is related to everyone.

Ann-Marie Rabalais

James was born in New York and raised in the Dominican Republic. He received his BS in I/O Psychology from Eastern Connecticut State University. He is currently a second year doctoral student and his research includes job satisfaction, counterproductive work behaviors, and organizational citizenship behaviors. After completing his PhD, James plans to work in academia. Fun Fact: James enjoys running and playing sports.

James De Leon

James Tornabene James T. Tornabene is a former fire chief for Ruston, La., which stimulated his research in firefighter stress and rescuer personality. He has an AS in Fire Service Management, a BAAS in Administrative Leadership, an MA in Industrial/Organization Psychology and currently working toward his PhD in the same discipline. Fun Fact: James plays video games with his son to combat stress.

Amy Frost

Amy is originally from Louisiana, and is currently a third year PhD student. She received both a BA in Psychology and an MA in I/O Psychology from Louisiana Tech. Amy's dissertation research will focus on the investigation of cross-cultural differences in motivational, attitudinal, and situational antecedents of job search behaviors in the unemployed. Fun Fact: Amy and her fiancé James are getting married in Marrakesh, Morocco next May.

Deann Arnold DeAnn Arnold was raised all over the world as a military brat, settling in Northwest Louisiana. She received her Master's Degree in I/O Psychology from Louisiana Tech in 2002 and since that time held various leadership positions in Human Resources. DeAnn is spending her third year of the doctoral program as an intern for a non-profit organization working to develop a selection tool for a statewide agency. Her research interests include expertise, job analysis, and fairness in selection. Fun Fact: DeAnn is an avid runner and enjoys spending time with her two young children, Anden and Cole.

Christopher Castille Christopher is from New Iberia, LA and has a BS in Psychology from

Louisiana State University and MA in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Louisiana Tech University. Currently, the questions guiding his research are (1) how does intelligence manifest itself at work, (2) how can we contextualize the assessment of intelligence, (3) does intelligence predict other work-relevant criteria, and (4) what can be done to understand the role of narrow cognitive abilities in the performance of work behavior? Fun Fact: Chris makes the best gumbo you will ever taste.

Stephanie Murphy Stephanie Murphy was born and raised in South Louisiana. She serves as financial officer and project manager for AROS Consulting. She completed a research internship and was a discharge planner at a rehabilitation hospital before pursuing her Ph.D. at Louisiana Tech University. She received her B.S. in psychology from the University of New Orleans and her M.A. in I-O psychology from Louisiana Tech. Currently, she is in her third year, and she researches work & family integration, diversity management, and the application of Reversal Theory to workplace concepts. Fun Fact: Stephanie can quote every word from both Cars movies and all three Toy Story movies, but not as fast as her three-year old son.

Victoria Smoak Victoria Smoak is a native of the north Louisiana cotton farming community of Dixie. After completing her undergraduate degree at LSU-Shreveport, Victoria moved to Ruston to attend La Tech. She is a proud Bulldog fan, the 7th member of her family to attend La Tech. As a third year Ph.D. student, Victoria is working on an AROS project leading a team of doctoral students involved in research design and data collection for a cyber security project funded by a Defense Department grant. Her personal research is focused on effective and favored leaders of culturally diverse followers, with implications for MNC managers or expat leaders in the field. Fun Fact: Victoria is a vegetarian, currently training for her first half marathon.

Meet Our Faculty… Tilman Sheets

Dr. Tilman Sheets received his PhD in Psychology with an emphasis in I/O Psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi. He is currently an associate professor and the Director of the I/O doctoral program at LA Tech. Dr. Sheets specializes in the areas of employee selection and organizational metrics. Fun Fact: Tilman likes spending his Saturday mornings with his three grandchildren (primarily discovering the joys and wonders of doughnuts).

Mitzi Desselles

Dr. Mitzi Desselles holds a PhD in I/O Psychology from Louisiana State University and currently serves as Director of AROS Consulting. She has recently returned to academia and is an assistant professor in the graduate program. Dr. Desselles’ research area is the application of reversal theory to leadership, team effectiveness, and the management of change. Fun Fact: Mitzi and her husband own a second home in Normandy, France.

Frank Igou

Kevin Mahoney

Dr. Frank Igou is the Coordinator of the I/O Psychology Master’s Program and Assistant Professor of Psychology at Louisiana Tech. He holds a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin –Oshkosh and an M.S. and Ph.D. in I/O Psychology from Auburn University. Dr. Igou has over 20 years of experience assisting organizations in areas relating to recruitment, selection, diversity issues, E.E.O.C. compliance and litigation support. Fun Fact: Frank spends his free time mountain biking and building electric guitars.

Dr. Kevin Mahoney received his PhD in I/O Psychology from the University of Akron and is currently an assistant professor of graduate psychology courses in leadership, training and development, and performance management. Dr. Mahoney’s research interests include emotions at work, decision-making, and the history of psychology and management. Fun Fact: Kevin and his wife raise beautiful Labrador dogs.

Contributing to the Cause Our Applied Research and Organizational Solutions work group provides students with the opportunity to work on

project with a variety of companies and non-profit organizations. Currently, money associated with any

project is donated to the Louisiana Tech I/O PhD program.
