BISHOP K.J. BROWN MINISTRIES -- BUILDING WINNING LIVES

YOUR VOTE IS A VALUABLE VOICE!Voting is an empowered opportunity to choose leadership, which should be exercised every time we have the oppor-tunity. Our collective voice is of great value to our neigh-borhoods, communities, city and country.

Our political system affords us the opportunity tovote...and every vote matters. Everyone who is eligible

to vote should do so. Never buy in to polls and per-centages put out in the media...and figure thatyour vote wont make a difference. Every votecounts and every voice will be heard by you partici-pating in this very important and pivotal election.

Be attentive to the issues and think forward. When I cast a ballot at thepolls I use a biblical example as my guide. God chose Davidas King. When I read the story of David, I see a lesson wecan all use in voting. God chose David because of the follow-

ing reasons ONE: His heart. TWO: His History. THREE: How hewould handle the issues. FOUR: How he would help the people.

FIVE: How he would be used to heal the land.God knew that David wouldnt be perfect; but God was

able to use him in civil government in order to fulfill his divine pur-pose. Voting is not only valuable to the candidate. Voting is valuable

to you and your family too. Our families are counting on us at the polls.Your right to vote is very valuable. So use it to be a part of the collectivevoice that leads this country forward. God Bless America!!!

  • The Candidates:These Candidates Are Seeking Your Vote onTues., Nov. 6, 2012 in the General Election

Why I am thebest candidatefor UnitedStates Senateby Ted CruzFor Your Thought Matters Readers

Im running for Senate because in myjudgment, America is at a crossroads.Barack Obama is the most radical presidentthis nation has ever seen and we are facingthe epic battle of our generation a battleof whether this nation remains a free-marketnation. The size, power, and spending ofthe federal government has increased fasterin the past three years than ever before. And we desperately need leadership tostand up and defend liberty, free-marketprinciples, and the U.S. Constitution.

I think voters in Texas and across thecountry are tired of the same establishmentincumbents. And 2010 showed they werelooking for new leaders who have thecourage of their convictions and are strong, principled conservatives who are willing tofight to defend limited government.

For the past decade, over and overagain, I have been standing up for conser-vative principles and winning on the nationallevel. Serving under Attorney General GregAbbott, I was proud to successfully defendthe Pledge of Allegiance, the Ten Com-mandments, the Second Amendment, andU.S. sovereignty from the World Court andthe UNall of which we won before theU.S. Supreme Court.

I am the only proven conservative in therace with a demonstrated record of standingup for conservative values and winning on anational level:

As the head of the Texas Public PolicyFoundations Center for Tenth AmendmentStudies, took a leading national role in fight-ing for States rights and against excessivefederal regulation.

Successfully represented Texas beforethe U.S. Supreme Court in Medellin v.Texas, which upheld U.S. sovereignty andheld that the World Court cannot bind theU.S. justice system and the President can-not order the state courts to obey the WorldCourt.

Under the leadership of Attorney Gen-eral Greg Abbott, repeatedly defended theright to free speech and religious expres-sion, including in a landmark decision pro-tecting the Texas Ten Commandmentsmonument.

Played a leading role in several impor-

tant pro-life cases, including defense of thepartial-birth abortion ban, parental consentlaws, and prohibiting state funds from goingto abortion.

Led a coalition of 31 states protectingthe 2nd Amendment by challenging the un-constitutional ban on gun rights in Washing-ton, D.C.

Worked to strengthen border securityand help ensure that America remains a na-tion of laws. Among other efforts, worked onefforts to increase penalties for felons whoenter the country illegally.

Defended the landmark lawsuit reformlegislation implemented in Texas in 2003,protecting the constitutionality of that effort, which has led to greater access to healthcare and expanded economic opportunity.

Successfully represented over 3 mil-lion veterans before the U.S. SupremeCourt, defending the constitutionality of theMojave Desert Veterans Memorial, whichwas erected in 1934 to honor WWI veter-ans.

Fought on the federal level to defendmarriage between one man and one womanas the fundamental building block of society.

Why I am thebest candidatefor U.S. Congress for the 7th Congressional Districtby James CargasFor Your Thought Matters Readers

I am the only challenger to the TeaPartys Culberson who has previouslyworked in the U.S. Congress or held anypublic service positions. I am also the onlylife-long Democrat with decades of cam-paign experience in the July 31st runoffelection. If elected, I will hit the ground run-ning on January 20th serving all people ofTexas 7th Congressional District.

    1. My earliest memory of public servicewas at age 12, when I served as Demo-cratic page in the Illinois Senate. My uncle

was an Illinois Senator from Chicago and Ispent the summer with him advancing Dem-ocratic principles of fairness, equality andresponsibility. The highlight was comingclose to seeing him pass the Equal RightsAmendment to the U.S. Constitution. Ifelected, I will honor his memory by continu-ing his efforts to protect women from hostilelegislation, education budget cuts, and un-equal pay.

    2. After college, I worked in the U.S.Congress for Rep. David Bonior (D-MI) as aDeputy Press Secretary.

    3. During law school in DC, I served asa law clerk at the Federal Energy Regula-tory Commission and learned the vital im-portance of affordable and reliable energyto our economy.

    4. After law school and a few years in theprivate sector, I worked in the Clinton WhiteHouse advancing solar and wind power, sus-tainable building practices and hybrid vehi-cles. Subsequently, I served in hisadministration at the U.S. Department of En-ergy under Gov. Bill Richardson.

    5. Today, I am the Senior Assistant CityAttorney for Energy for Mayor AnniseParker, a position I also was appointed toand held under Mayor Bill White.

    6. My campaign experience reachesback to the Dukakis, Clinton, Gore, Ed-wards and Kerry campaigns. For Gore2000, I was a paid staffer traveling acrossthis beautiful nation and filing tax returnsin four states that I lived in. For Obama in2008, I was asked to go the critical Colum-bus, Ohio area.

    7. Given the importance of energy toour community, I joined with others to formthe Oil Patch Democrats as a means of pro-moting Democratic energy policy alterna-tives. I also serve on the board of GreenDoor, Inc., a non-profit organization linking

under-served communities to opportunitiesin the Green Economy.

    8. My many endorsements can beviewed at: www.jamescargas.com/support-ers. They include: AFL-CIO, Houston Feder-ation of Teachers, Teamsters, CWA, IBEW,Tejano Democrats, and the Houston BlackAmerican Democrats.

    9. If elected, I will proudly representHoustons Energy Corridor. I will also workto cancel the Bush tax cuts and return to abalanced budget like Clintons. I will notsupport the Ryan Budget or any of theshameful cuts to Medicare and Social Secu-rity it contains.

Why I am thebest candidatefor HarrisCounty JudgeDistrict #129by Michael LandrumFor Your Thought Matters Readers

My name is Michael Landrum and I am aRepublican candidate for Judge of the 129thCivil District Court. The incumbent is a De-mocrat named Michael Gomez, who de-feated Grant Dorfman in the 2008 Obamasweep. Judge Dorfman has graciously en-dorsed me in this race. I am also honored tohave the endorsements of Sen. Dan Patrick,Rep. Dwayne Bohac, Rep. Allen Fletcher,Paul Bettencourt and many others.

I believe in our civil justice system. I believethat impartial courts and competent judgesare essential to the success of free marketcapitalism, as business depends on theconsistent and fair application of known andunderstood legal principles. You and yourneighbors are more likely to be personallyaffected by a judges rulings than by the ac-tions of any other elected official. I under-stand and believe that an independent andefficient judiciary will always be the last bas-tion of democracy.

I am the most qualified candidate, andnot only because I have been representingbusinesses and business people longer andin a more diversified variety of cases thanmy opponent. I have worked hard to obtainspecialty certification in two fields of legalspecialty relating to the matters heard in acivil district court: my Civil Trial Law certifi-cation was awarded in 1989 and my CivilAppellate Law certification was awarded in1995 by the Texas Board of Legal Special-ization. My opponent has not been awardeda specialty in any area of law.

For fourteen years, I presided in theHarris County tax court. In that part-timerole I was responsible for a busy docketand for keeping a dozen sitting judgessatisfied that cases were properly and ex-peditiously decided.

For over 20 years, I have been an arbi-trator member of the American ArbitrationAssociation. As an arbitrator, I have re-ceived evidence and rendered final awardsin more than 200 cases involving a varietyof issues. Some have involved relativelysmall consumer claims, and some werecomplex commercial matters involving mil-lions of dollars. I realize that no case is triv-ial to the parties involved, and every case isentitled to a fair hearing and careful deliber-ation.

I am proud to be ranked Well Quali-fied over my opponent by two-to-one inthe Houston Bar Associations JudicialQualification Poll.

I am a life-long conservative. I havesupported conservative causes and candi-dates with my time and financial contribu-

tions for many years.I volunteer my time serving as counsel

to Crossroads School, a private school thatspecializes in educating children with spe-cial needs. I have lectured in continuinglegal education seminars, including presen-tations to Harris County judges. I volunteeras a judge in student competitions at SouthTexas College of Law. My wife, Mary Grace, and I have been active in local schools, theSpring Branch Education Foundation, ourchurch, and other community activities. Inyears past, I coached little league basket-ball and soccer.

Why I am thebest candidatefor HarrisCounty Constable forPrecinct #1by Alan RosenFor Your Thought Matters Readers

My experience at the jail gave me abetter understanding of how law enforce-ment can make a difference in the lives ofthose at a critical crossroads. In addition toseeing people who needed detention, I sawpeople who needed help not just punish-ment. Allen Rosen

The citizens of Precinct 1 deserve aConstable with the proven law enforce-

ment, management and community expe-rience to move the Constables Office to ahigher level of service and accountability. That is why Major Alan Rosen is the bestchoice for Precinct 1 Constable. MajorAlan Rosen is a 21- year law enforcementveteran with the Harris County SheriffsDepartment. Rosen is an honors gradu-ate in Criminal Justice from the Universityof Houston. He is the only candidate inthe run-off with direct patrol, managementand budgetary experience.

Alan currently serves as a Major andCommander of the Special Operations Bu-reau for the Harris County Sheriffs Officemanaging criminal warrants, fugitive war-rants, the child predator apprehensionteam, sex offender tracking team and the.Tactical Medical Team (Tac Medics), an eliteteam of Emergency Room Physicians andParamedics who all have police andS.W.A.T. training.

Under Alans leadership the HarrisCounty developed and instituted the ChildPredator Apprehension Team, and warrantapprehension rates have increased 161%and capture rates for the increased by im-pressive numbers. Currently, the ChildPredator Apprehension Team (CPAT) main-tains an 84% capture rate.

As Commander of the Sex OffenderRegistration Tracking Team (SORT), Alanand his subordinates ensure that registeredsex offenders are where they are supposedto be while conducting field interviews andsurveying the entire home and work placeduring visits.

Alan began his law enforcement as adeputy sheriff. Working in the jail opera-tions, he became well acquainted with pol-icy issues and detention process, as well asthe penal side of the job. Later, transferringto Harris County Law Enforcement, his ex-perience and knowledge of the law ex-panded. Rather than allowing his work inthe county to harden him, instead it helpedAlan gain insight, and compassion into thedepth and tragedy of the issues facing theincarcerated including mental illness andother problems.

Transferring to the Patrol Division, Alanlearned to solve crimes by listening to whatpeople said and what they didnt say, Wewere able talk with members of the commu-nity, witness what was happening, then goin and make the arrest. Working in nar-cotics, Alan was assigned to work on an Un-dercover Narcotics Street Task Force, purchasing narcotics on the street in an ef-fort to track down the major traffickers sup-plying the street dealers.

I seek to serve as a Trustee on the Har-ris County Board of Education because I be-lieve all children deserve a quality education.I am committed to bringing quality educationto Harris County Precinct 1 and plan to use

my experiences within local, state, and fed-eral levels of government to do so.

I am committed to improving the educa-tion quality for students in Harris County. Itruly believe that none of our children arethrowaways and they all deserve opportu-nity. If elected to serve as a Trustee on theHarris County Board of Education, I plan toensure that our system focuses on:

Quality professional development andsupport for our teachers and school leadersin Harris County.

Quality implementation of educa-tional services and enrichment programsfor students.

Quality management of the commu-nitys financial resources.

Quality outreach to and partnershipsthroughout our communities including the26 ISDs and charter schools in HarrisCounty.

In addition to being a former HISDteacher, I have worked for the state govern-ment finance contributing to the developmentof a $21 Billion education budget and navi-gated the complex federal legislative process. My educational background includes a Mas-ters of Public Policy, Duke University, TerrySanford School of Public Policy and B.A. withHonors, from the University of North Carolinaat Chapel Hill. I have expertise in the legisla-tive process and how the state and federalgovernment work with local school boards likethe County Board to institute education policy. As Trustee, I will apply all of this expertise andknow-how to improve the delivery of educa-tion services for our children.

For those who are unfamiliar with theboard, the Harris County Board of EducationBoard ensures accountability for our publictax dollars. The Department saves districtsmoney through sharing resources, improvedefficiency and collaborating on best prac-tices. Students benefit from high quality serv-ices like early intervention, after schoolingand continued education. As a Trustee, itwould be my mission to expand the out-reach, accessibility and quality service deliv-ery of the Harris County Department ofEducation beyond its traditional targets toensure our highest needs communities ben-

Why I am thebest candidatefor HarrisCounty Sheriffby Louis GuthrieFor Your Thought Matters Readers

The position of Sheriff is extremely im-portant; effecting the safety and quality oflife of every citizen. As we have learnedfrom the current Democratic Sheriff, lack ofexperience, especially leadership experi-ence, can have devastating consequences. Ibegan my career in 1991 as a jailer with the

Harris County Sheriffs Office and havesince promoted through the ranks to WatchCommander and eventually Director of Spe-cial Crimes and Narcotics. Over my career, Ihave gained Supervisory and Command ex-perience in almost every area of Law En-forcement.

Many of you are already familiar with myconservative law and order style of policingas well as my lobbying for safer communi-ties, better immigration policies, and voteraccountability processes in Harris County. Iam actively engaged with Texas Legislators, having travelled to Austin many times in pastlegislative session to offer advice and opin-ions on Law Enforcement and Public Safetyissues. I have always stood for:

Constitutional Rights State Rights American Sovereignty Less Bureau-cracy Less Taxes More PersonalProperty Rights The War on Terrorism.

Having been appointed by Commission-ers Court to the Harris County CEFFC, I un-derstand the need to have the smallestimpact on Harris County tax payers. Serv-ing as Vice President, I authorized over$700 million dollars for Hospitals and HealthCare Facilities in Harris County; all with NOTAXPAYER EXPENSE.

Through my years of public service, Ihave earned the trust and support of mostleaders in the community and have gainedoverwhelming support from the law en-forcement professional organizations. I willcontinue to work with CommissionersCourt to revitalize the Sheriffs Office, re-store fiscal sanity and return integrity tothe office. As your next Sheriff, I will makeit a priority to REDUCE CRIME, CUT UN-NECESSARY SPENDING, and put moreDeputies on the street.

Being actively involved in civic and polit-ical issues since the age of eighteen, I haveworked in many Republican Campaigns inHarris County and throughout Texas with thehope of giving Texans strong conservativechoices. In this election cycle, we, as Con-servatives, have a duty to elect not only themost qualified candidates, but also thosecandidates who have consistently sharedour values and have an identifiable, reliableRepublican track record.

Through my 21 years as a Peace OfficerI have demonstrated the Integrity andCourage this job demands. As a public ser-vant and leader I have developed the Visionand Judgment required to run Texasslargest Sheriffs Office. Together, thesemake me the best candidate for HarrisCounty Sheriff and the most qualified candi-date to represent you.

    OP-ED FROM A DEMOCRATIC PERSPECTIVE

    THIS NOVEMBER .

    WE ARE VOTINGFOR OUR FUTURE

    Carroll G. Robinson*

Your DecisionsAs a voter, this November, you will have a lot of decisions to make about the future of our country

and community from who will serve as the next President of our nation to the election of county officialsand local judges to whether or not to approve local bond issues and whether to allow Metro to keep all ofits sales tax revenue to improve bus service and build more bus shelters and light rail which are needed inNortheast Houston, Sunnyside, Southwest Houston, Alief and the Spring Branch area.

Our Country & Our CommunityIf our country and community are to once again grow and prosper, we need to elect fair and thoughtful

people to public office; create more good paying private sector jobs; ensure a well educated workforce; andbuild safe and clean neighborhoods with good streets, clean air and water, and easy access to public trans-portation, health care services and grocery stores with healthy and affordable food.

Vote For HCC BondOn the November ballot, the Houston Community College System (HCC) will be asking for your

support and permission to issue $425 million in bonds to build more buildings to educate more people towork in the healthcare and energy industries.

Some of the money will be used to help build more Early College High Schools to help more youngpeople get a better education and workforce preparation while earning both a High School Diploma and acollege Associate Degree or Workforce Certificate by taking Dual Credit courses.

Since its founding, over one million people have benefited from the services of HCC from GED andESL classes to Associate Degrees, Workforce Certificates and continuing education courses.

HCC has and remains one of the cornerstones for building a better future for all the people in our community.HCC helps ensure that we all have an opportunity to do better.Currently, close to 100,000 people are attending HCC and more want to come and will,

if we had the space to serve them.Voting for the HCC bond would allow the System to build more buildings to serve more people all

across our region from Katy and West Houston to Alief, Stafford/Missouri City and Fort Bend County toSouthwest Houston, the Medical Center, Third Ward and Sunnyside/South Union to Southeast Houston toNortheast Houston and North Forest.

Hire Local FirstNot only do we need more buildings for HCC, we also need to make sure that the contracts awarded to

build them are awarded in a fair and inclusive manner. With your help and support, I will work to make sure that is done. All three bond proposals on the November ballot (the City of Houstons, HISDs and HCCs) if passed,

are major economic opportunities for shared prosperity, local job creation and broad based wealth building.Local businesses and professionals should be hired first.Big companies should be encourages to partner and joint venture with small, minority and

women owned businesses.Local voters cant be called on the pass the bonds then all of the money is spent with companies and

professionals from other states and outside of the Houston region. Thats not fair.

Vote No on Metro ReferendumFinally, Vote NO on the Metro referendum on the November Ballot. After years of spending hundreds of millions of dollars of Houston taxpayers money on General

Mobility, we still have Big Potholes in our streets, congestion of our highways and too much pollution inour community.

Metro needs to keep all of its sales tax revenue to provide better bus service, build more bus sheltersand to build more light rail all across Houston and the Metro service area from Northeast Houston to Sun-nyside to the University Line from Main Street to Texas Southern University to connecting both Hobbyand Bush airports. Its time for us to stand up for a bigger and better rail system in our community.

ConclusionAmerica is a democratic Republic, a representative democracy. Every year, you get to decide who

will represent you and the things you believe in and the future you want for yourself your family andcommunity.

This November its that time again. Its time for you to decide. Its time for you to choose the peo-ple you want to represent you and the future you want. You decide.

Make sure you are registered to vote, and VOTE. Take someone with you to the polls.

Vote to Build a Better Houston.

Robinson is an Associate Professor at the BarbaraJordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas SouthernUniversity; Trustee for Houston Community College System Dis-trict IV, a former At-Large Houston City Council Member and for-mer Chairman of the Houston Citizens Chamber of Commerce.

  • OP-ED FROM A REPUBLICAN PERSPECTIVE

n the Fall of 2005,when the air wascooling from thetransition of sea-

sons and the Gulf waswarm and tremulous, one of the most devas-tating hurricanes inhistory tour to shredsthe Gulf Coast and par-ticularly, my city, thecity of New Orleans. After evacuating toBaton Rouge, one dayafter the storm touchedland, I received a callfrom my superior in-forming me theLouisiana Air NationalGuard had been mobi-lized and I would haveto return back to NewOrleans and report forduty. Upon my arrival,I witnessed volunteersof would be heroeslined up for search andrescue, I joined a num-ber of brave, caringAmericans, who, re-gardless of color, wasready to help their fel-low man. The rest ishistory.

Notwithstanding, people forget his-tory, and the stories that fill our hearts and fuelour passions, disseminate into nothing morethan a lost utopia, a fiction only realized tem-porarily because of tragedy and the rare oppor-tunity afforded to mankind to set asidedifferences in order to live. In the shelter of afrightening tent, I fell in love with an editorialwritten in the early 1850s, entitled Appeal ofan Independent Democrat; it was an editorialthat had moved my hero, Frederick Douglas. Iread the editorial, hoping it would move me.It was an editorial by Horace Greeley, an abo-litionist, the man who christened in the Repub-lican Party. He lived in a time where thepeople wanted government to take a strongerrole against slavery. During Greeleys time, the government was oppressive, it robbedmen of their natural ability and responsibil-ity to succeed, and laws were in placethat catered to a certain class and race,as if they were entitled. It stole hu-manity, self-worth, individualachievement, social advancement, dignity, respect, and independ-ence from one race, so that an-other could reap what was notsown by them. As I read the ar-ticle, it was a frightening simi-larity to the time I lived in. Afew names were changed to pro-tect the innocent, situationswere a little turned around but itwas the same oppressive spirit, aspirit that had found itself nestledcomfortably in my generation. Kneedeep in the throes of chaos and confu-sion, surrounded by rape and murder, pillagement and plunder, crippled by theinability to return to my love one in order tostrengthen a union, that, unbeknown to me,had already be stolen, the eerie similarities ofGreeleys plight and mine, rang loudly. Thisis slavery! I yelled. If We, the Peo-ple, are to be saved from oppression, ourability to stand must be a permanent constitu-tion of our psyche. No matter how big thecrutch or the aid, no power other than the willof man and the grace of God can secure ourlivelihood. If the Government were the an-swer, then why did I participate in a searchand rescue effort retrieving deceased brothersand sisters that had believed the lie that Gov-

ernment would take care of them. My people, who had been emancipated from slavery, by aparty it now hates, found themselves slavesagain, enslaved by a lie, the lie of entitlementand the Ill take care of you deception.

My name is R.W. Bray, and if I livedin the mid1800s they wouldve labeled me anIndependent Democrat, (the initial name of theRepublican Party). I am a Black Republicanrunning for office to represent a District that hasfallen prey to a lie. Consequently, the fruits ofthat falsity have spawned failure among myschools, made criminals of the children that livewithin my district,galva-

nizedand cor-ralled a certain race as ifthey were cattle and sacrificed another group, like pigs to the slaughter. I live in a District fullof potential but has not lived up to its greatnessin over a decade. The disparities of my districtare incredible and it lacks growth because it isin dire need of true representation. I live in aSenate District where Republicans have beenforced to settle for activities adverse to their

betterment and beliefs. Democrats have had noother choice except to keep the status quo dueto lack of choice and a gerrymandering master-piece, designed to keep a representative in of-fice based on the ignorance of a voting base. But this editorial will change all that. Muchlike the editorial I read years ago, the power ofpen and the bravery of modern day abolitionistwho truly believe in fairness and equality forall, regardless of race or party affiliations, menand women of character will join a search andrescue team politically, socially and spiritually,to bring about economic independence for mydistrict by fostering an Entrepreneur environ-ment, fueling our Energy resources, anchoring

ourselves to a conviction that will redefineEducation and success for our youthand with any luck create a party ofall races and all backgrounds-Houstonian Americans.Someone once told me thatmy dreams were lofty, thatI was a dreamer and un-realistic. I am adreamer; an abolition-ist, who believes thatthe city of HoustonsEconomic freedomcan and will be foundonce we embrace thethree Es mentionedabove. If anyonecomes across myname and wonders,Who is this guy andwhat is his platform?Know that I am a man whobelieves it is time men of

principle sit on our most princi-pal positions. Im on the ballot

this November, so whether youreRepublican or Democrat, now you have

a choice and a chance. In the up-comingelections the readers of this editorial can eithervote straight ticket, or straight principle. Thevictory of my campaign and the campaign of somany in the Run-Off and the General election, depend on the latter. Lets make history. Letsvote principle over party, person over propa-ganda and stir up a Hurricane of growth andchange that will break apart the dividing leveesof our races and our society.

  • FORMER DEMOCRATIC CHAIRMAN BOYD L. RICHIE: Whether it is dealingwith economic, healthcare, or national security issues, good leadership is necessaryfor our society to get through these difficult times. Level headed leadership is crucialin order to see the predicament through the end and to make certain all possible sce-narios have been played out.

CURRENT LIBERTARIAN CHAIRMAN PATRICK L. DIXON: I doubt anyonewould argue that leadership is not important at any time, but it is also necessary inorder to prevent a crisis before it occurs. It is at times of crisis that the temptation fora leader to become a dictator grows. A great leader has followers that sincerely be-lieve in the mission instead of being coerced to support a mission under threat.

CURRENT U.S. CONGRESSMAN KEVIN BRADY: Its critical. In a terrible stormyou dont want to risk turning the helm of the ship over to someone who has neverpiloted one. These days voters want common-sense, qualified leaders with proven ex-pertise to help steer this nation through rough economic times.

FORMER MILITARY LEADER DEXTER HANDY: Good leadership is absolutelynecessary during times of crisis. When lives, livelihoods, safety, security, or infrastruc-tures are at risk, a good strong leader must take control of the situation. As a formermilitary leader I have the ability to quickly identify the critical problem areas, assessalternative approaches to fixing the problems, develop working solutions, pull to-gether the right team to fix the problems, and make it happen. As a leader, I am alsoaware of communicating the solutions to the community affected, and taking meas-ures to calm the fears of the people adversely affected.

CURRENT U.S. CONGRESSMAN PETE OLSON: Leadership and character are thetwo most important qualities for elected officials to possess in a crisis. These two quali-ties determine if someone will rise to the occasion, create a sense of teamwork and ur-gency and move the process along toward an appropriate solution. In Congress, weneed more people who will be steadfast, keep their word and their principles and worktoward the best result for the American people, and not for a given party.

FORMER U.S. CONGRESSMAN Chris Bell: Strong leadership in a crisis is critical.A vast majority of Texans are dissatisfied with the lack of leadership they see in thestate legislature on vital issues such as school funding, health care reform and spend-ing transparency.

FORMER STATE REPRESENTATIVE RICHARD J (RICK) NORIEGA:

In their land navigation training, my sol-diers learn that if youre off course a coupleof degrees for a short distance, it doesntmatter too much. But if youre off coursefor a good while, then the divide fromwhere you are and where you should be isso great that it is nearly impossible to getback on the right course.

  • FORMER HARRIS COUNTY SHERIFF THOMAS: Good leadership during times ofcrisis is especially important because the qualities good leaders possess give others con-fidence, provide direction and ease concerns related to the crisis. Good leaders possessmany important qualities: a.) Honesty and integrity. b.) The ability to inspire others. c.) Avision for the future and the know-how to get the job done. d.) Qualifications and experi-ence. e.) Good communication and organizational skills. f.) Ability to delegate.

FORMER GALVESTON MAYOR JAWORSKI: Leadership is critical during theseuncertain times because the solutions to the challenges we face require broad publicsupport to be effective...

CURRENT SHERIFF ADRIAN GARCIA: Good leadership is always critical not justduring a crisis. However, the public and employees need to know that they havesomeone they can follow when they most need direction. Leadership should be visibleand engaged, making the most difficult decisions. I saw this in Mayor Bill White dur-ing and after Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Ike. Effective leadership makes citizensfeel protected before, during and after a critical incident. An effective leader needs tobe respected and supported, and I am honored that the three main employee groupsof the Sheriffs Office have endorsed my candidacy and NOT their boss.

CURRENT HARRIS COUNTY JUDGE ED EMMETT: Leadership is critical duringtimes of crisis, but effective leadership is born of preparation. The best leader withgreat instincts and skills will only be successful if he is prepared.

OUTGOING HARRIS COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY PAT LYKOS: Leadershipis vital to swift assessment, rapid response, optimizing use of resources, adaptationto changing circumstances and minimizing collateral damage in controlling a crisis.Leaders should always demonstrate a calm confidence and be decisive. The effectiveenforcement of our criminal laws is essential to keeping the social fabric intact, which is based upon law and order and the rule of law. As Drucker said, Leaders dothe right things and managers do things right. Good leaders hold themselves ac-countable first, and then their subordinates.

FORMER STATE SENATOR MIKE JACKSON: Good leadership is crucial in timesof crisis. We saw how smoothly the Hurricane Ike evacuation was handled by ourlocal emergency management officials and we were therefore able to avoid massiveamounts of loss of life because of it. As a leader you sometimes have to know whento get in front of a camera and when that isnt necessary. For the most part, mywork during the Hurricane focused on providing some of our local jurisdictions thestate resources they needed during the aftermath because our local authorities didsuch a fabulous job.

CURRENT SUPREME COURT JUSTICE WALLACE B. JEFFERSON

The public benefits from a steady handduring a time of crisis someone dedi-cated to evaluating whatever emergencyis presented, conferring with all af-fected, and then making clear decisionstogether with contingency plans forunanticipated complications.

  • CURRENT HARRIS COUNTY ATTORNEY VINCE RYAN: I believe that in timesof crisis great leadership is necessary. Certainly, war is one example. My train-ing and experiences in my twenty eight years in the U.S. Army Reserve, includingVietnam and Panama during Operation Just Cause, taught me much about lead-ership in times of crisis. Primarily, a leader in all circumstances must lead by ex-ample, especially in times of crisis.

CURRENT HARRIS COUNTY JUDGE RANDY ROLL: Symbolically and substan-tively a strong leader can get things going. I am a leader not a follower. A ship with-out a captain, drifts aimlessly...

FORMER HARRIS COUNTY JUDGE ROGER BRIGWATER: It is the differencebetween success and failure. Besides giving direction, a leader gives confidence, in-spires others to trust and join the team.

CURRENT HARRIS COUNTY COMMISSIONER STEVE RADACK: Good leader-ship is always vital during a crisis. But we must put the word crisis in perspective.Harris County consists of nearly 4 million residents. It is safe to say that every secondthere is someone experiencing a crisis in their life. It could be one of the thousands ofchildren abused annually, or a senior citizen struggling to pay the light bill while facinga mountain of medical expenses. It could be one of the hundreds of thousands of peo-ple treated at the Harris County Hospital District each year. Leaders come in all shapesand forms. As a leader, my best work is to make sure other leaders in the communityhave the tools they need to help all these people 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. The people of Harris County are dynamic and challenges are always present. Leaders, like those on Harris County Commissioners Court, find a way to make sure the commu-nity has the tools to deal with whatever confronts the people we serve.

FORMER CITY OF HOUSTON POLICE CHIEF C. O. BRAD BRADFORD: Goodleadership is essential to the successful operation of any entity during a time of cri-sis, especially in a governmental organization that has the responsibility of protectingthe public, such as the Harris County District Attorneys Office. That office requires aleader with strength, integrity and sound judgment. During a crisis, a leaders char-acter is put to the ultimate test and their ability to lead must be an example for allwho follow, uniting others to work for the greater good of all. A leader must be ableto recognize the source of the crisis, ascertain available resources and then deter-mine the most appropriate solution; then he or she must be strong and wise enoughto efficiently and effectively implement that solution. NOTE: C.O. Bradford is cur-rently serving on Houston City Council as an At-Large Councilmember.

CURRENT STATE REPRESENTATIVE DWAYNE BOHAC: Leadership during timeof crisis is absolutely vital to our community and state. During my time in the legisla-ture, I have always handled tough situations with one question in mind: What isbest for my district? Having this mindset helps keep me calm and enables me totake on challenges and tough votes knowing that I am doing what I think is ab-solutely best for my district, no matter the situation.

CURRENT HARRIS COUNTY JUDGE DAVID MENDOZA

Good leadership is of paramount importancein times of crisis. People want answers, peo-ple want leaders who have a vision and whoproduce good results for their constituents.

THE CHOICE IS YOURSBy Pastor Robert L. ThomasFor Your Thought Matters Readers:

I know many of us will say the old clich Our forefathers died for this right!,which is very true; but that alone as an argument to motivate us to do what weshould already be excited to do; just isnt enough.

Why we have to extol the virtues of voting to a people just a few decades re-moved from one of the worst atrocities ever perpetrated against mankind in the de-testable act of slavery is really beyond me.

It really boils down to this: if you are interested in having a better quality of life;you should go out and vote; if you want your children to be able to afford to attendcollege, then go vote; if you think your taxes are too high for the services you re-ceive; go out and vote; if your school system is not what you want it to be; yep,you should get up and roll to the polls.

It really is true your vote is your voice! We have to be stronger in voice, sothat what we say, when we say it, matters, and we are responsible for doing that atthe voting booth. Elected officials work for the taxpayers, not the other wayaround, and as such, they should not be able to tell us what they are going to do,they are to push forward the positive agendas for bettering our safety, opportuni-ties, prosperity and quality of life.

The choice is yours, accept things as they are, or vote and seek the systemicchange we all so richly deserve!
