HAPPY NEW YEAR!
2012 year of the dragonThe Chinese New Year will commence
on 23 January 2012, with the placid year
of the Rabbit making way for the volatile
year of the Dragon.
The twelve year animal cycle is quite
well known in the west. The animals
that represent the signs in Chinese
astrology are taken from ancient tales
and also interact with the five elements
and the male and female energy of yin
and yang.
Chinese dragons are legendary
creatures in Chinese mythology and
folklore and symbolise potent and
auspicious powers, particularly control
over water, rainfall, hurricane and
floods. Occupying the 5th position in
the Chinese zodiac, the Dragon is the
mightiest of the signs and is a symbol of
power, strength, vitality and good luck.
The characteristics of the Dragon
sign are tempered by one of the five
Chinese elements of metal, wood, fire,
water and earth. The year 2012, is
the year of the Water Dragon. Water
has a calming effect on the Dragons’
fearless temperament and makes for a
very balanced and harmonious Dragon.
The last ‘Year of the Dragon’ or Metal
Dragon, was celebrated in the year
2000 which was also the first official
ceremony to be held under the Chinese
Ceremonial Archway in Liverpool,
Chinatown.
Dragons have a natural charisma and
are gifted with power and luck, they
are innovative, brave, enterprising,
passionate and self assured. However,
they can be conceited, tactless, quick
tempered and will stop at nothing to get
what they want. A person born in this
year is capable of great achievements
provided they know how to harness
their tremendous energy, intelligence
and talent.
Whilst we have challenging times
ahead, Liverpool which is twinned
with Shanghai, can look forward to
strengthening its trade and cultural
relations with our new partners as
the legacy of the World Expo 2010
continues to have a very positive
impact on our city.
Liverpool will be celebrating its Chinese
New Year on Sunday 22nd January
2012. As always, the street festivities
will be fun filled with plenty of activities
for children and adults, including
the traditional Lion, Dragon and the
Unicorn dances.
The Liverpool Chinatown Chinese
New Year Co-ordinating Committee
2012 would like to thank its sponsors
and supporters and wish you all,
“Kung Hei Fat Choi”!
