2012 Preview: The Westminster College softball team has enjoyed sus-tained success thanks to seven winning records in the last eight years and five conference tournament appearances in six seasons. A year ago, the Titans compiled a 19-16 record, including an 11-5 mark for third place in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) standings. The last two seasons Westminster finished the regular season as one of three PAC teams with 10 or more conference wins. Westminster returns six out of 10 starters and 13 out of 17 letter-winners in 2012 from last year’s team.

“We will continue to be competitive in the PAC,” said veteran head coach Jan Reddinger. “Our goal is to win the PAC every year and our underclassmen will step into more significant roles and keep the program going.”

Two of the five players that earned all-PAC honors return to the team in 2012 including junior shortstop Katie Hughes, who led the team with a .345 bat-ting average as a sophomore. Hughes was also a first team All-PAC member in 2011 with seven home runs (second in PAC) and 19 RBI’s. Junior first base-man/pitcher Chelsea Brown, one of only three Titans to earn a start on the mound in 2011, looks to build on a second team All-PAC season. Brown hit .310 from the plate and finished the season with a 9-4 record on the hill with 70 strikeouts.

The two seniors on the team are third baseman Erica Kimmick, a third-year starter who batted .236 in 2011, and outfielder Julie Norris.

“Kimmick’s game experience and Norris’ leadership abilities are the perfect combination for seniors to have,” Reddinger said.

The other three returning starters are junior outfielders Brittany Gamble and Olet Stasko and sophomore outfielder Carissa Conway. Gamble is a two-year starter and a 2010 first team All-PAC selection. Stasko is a two-year starter who can play catcher. Conway batted .270 in her rookie season. Junior pitcher Layne Carpenter is a candidate to start after she started four games in each of the last two seasons. Sophomore catcher/second baseman Kelsey Squelch is a one-year letter-winner who should see significant time as a catcher in 2012.

Reddinger won her 400th career game during last season to become one of 34 active NCAA Division III coaches to reach the milestone and the 51st all-time.

Westminster opens season play at the Rebel Games from March 4-9 in Kissimmee, Florida. The first game at Westminster field will be on March 23 versus Penn State-Altoona with a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
