Clear Bags for Garbage UpdateWe introduced clear garbage bags to the Valley in 2008 to improve handling safety and to increase recycling and composting. As a result, we are now sending almost 20% less garbage to landfill than in 2007 and have reduced the risk of garbage - related injuries. All by simply changing the colour of a bag.

Recycling Compostable Organics GarbageWell done Annapolis Valley!
The Privacy BagWe recognize that some garbage may want to be kept private. We would prefer only the use of clear bags but each household in the Valley is allowed one solid-colour privacy bag on collection day. However, the privacy bag must only contain garbage items; it cannot contain recyclables, compostables or hazardous waste. Personal mail may be shredded or ripped up and placed in the blue bag along with other papers.
Clear Bags are not just for Regular Collection. Remember to also use clear bags for any bagged items you bring to our Management Centres. Clear bags are also required for bagged waste put out for Spring and Fall Cleanup.

To protect our environment, there are provincial and municipal laws to regulate waste disposal.
A common form of illegal dumping is at private waste containers (i.e. dumpsters). These containers are not for public use; they are rented by an organization or individual who then pays a hauling company to remove the waste.
When garbage is illegally dumped in a waste container, whether by a stranger or an employee, it costs the business extra time and money.
There are better and legal ways to dispose of your waste. You can place sorted materials at curbside on your regular collection day. The costs are included in your property taxes so there is no extra charge. There are also two Management Centres in Kentville and Lawrencetown and other licensed, privately run sites that accept sorted waste for a nominal fee.
Dumping in Commercial Dumpsters is Illegal!
Did You Know ?
That the cost to dispose of a small load (up to 60 kg) at the Management Centre is only $4 and the average cost to dispose of a 1/2 ton truck load of regular household waste is $13. Note: Cost depends on the weight of the materials.

Construction and Demolition (C&D) materials are those items leftover at a construction, renovation or demolition site. Materials such as wood, metal, asphalt shingles and drywall are often discarded in a landfill but can be useful commodities that can be recycled into new products. Recycling C&D materials is good for the environment, can save you money and is easy to do!
10 Steps to Successful C&D Recycling
Roscoe Construction Ltd. and Envirobate recycled over 90% of the waste generated during a recent renovation at Central Kings Rural High School.
Construction and Demolition Debris
1. Commit to Reducing Waste. Designate a recycling coordinator to oversee all aspects of the waste management plan.
2. Develop a Waste Management Plan. Make a plan that establishes goals and identifies individual responsibilities. Valley Waste has a sample plan available.
3. Identify Target Markets. Determine what types and quantities of materials the project will generate and where they can be reused or recycled.
4. Select Markets and Haulers.
5. Set up Signage & Site Logistics. Make the site recycling friendly. Clear signage and strategically placed bins will make sorting waste easy.
6. Monitor Often. Check bins often for contamination and resolve problems promptly.
7. Educate & Train. Employees and sub-contractors should be aware of sorting requirements.
8. Track Waste. Keep track of weigh slips to determine your recycling rate and to make sure waste is disposed of properly.
9. Adjust & Fix Problems. Discuss your plan during project meetings and adjust as necessary.
10. Celebrate Success!
Contractors can follow these steps to maximize recycling efforts on site.
Call us. We have staff available to assist you with your
recycling efforts!

2012 Waste Management Calendar
Valley residents do a great job sorting their waste at home and at work. But one area where we greatly need to improve is using public containers while out-and-about:
• Shopping • Quick service restaurants
• Parks • Sporting events • Festivals
We all need to do our part to send less waste to the landfill and public waste bins are an important component. Taking an extra 30 seconds to read the signage and sort waste properly can really make a big difference. Many businesses have invested in sorting stations with fantastic signage of waste generated in their store.
Sorting On The Go
Festivals and EventsMany events in the Valley are doing a great job of greening their event with proper sorting stations for waste. Whether it’s a large scale festival or a community supper, if attendees are expected to manage their own waste, the option to recycle and compost must be offered.
Need to borrow containers for your event? Valley Waste can help We loan out 3-stream sorting stations for events of all sizes
Despite 15 years of recycling in Nova Scotia, there are still public areas that do not offer recycling and compost containers. It’s something we’re working on but if there isn’t an option to recycle, it’s best to practice what all good campers do: Pack it in - pack it out so you can recycle it at home. If you feel strongly that there should be a sorting station at that location – call us. We may be able to help.
Provincial funding is available to not-for-profit groups to green
their event. Groups can receive up to $500 for sorting stations
or other green initiatives. Call Valley Waste for details or visit

2012 Waste Management Calendar
The safety of our employees and those who provide services on our behalf is our most important priority and we need your help! Injuries are reported every day as the result of items being disposed of unsafely. What you put in your waste could hurt someone’s mom, dad, brother, sister, son or daughter.
Please help us to ensure that all those who handle waste go home safely to their families each and every day!
Explosives and ammunition – Ammunition can be returned to any RCMP division. For explosives (yes, they’re out there!) contact Camp Aldershot or 14 Wing Greenwood.
Ashes - Do not belong in the green cart. Green carts are ventilated and can stoke seemingly cold ashes back to life. Ashes have caused fires in garbage trucks, green carts, as well as nearby buildings. Set ashes outside in a metal container for at least 3 weeks and then spread on your lawn or garden. If that is not an option, put COLD ashes in clear garbage bags and set out for roadside collection.
No Bleach Please – When people pour bleach over bags or green carts (to keep animals away) the hazardous liquid can spray into the
face of the waste collector.
Broken glass, knives, scissors - These can all puncture workers. Please place beside your bags in a sealed cardboard box or rigid container and label “Sharp” or “Broken Glass”
Medical Waste - There is very little medical waste (i.e. tubing, dressings etc,) that is recyclable. Please place medical waste in the garbage. Call us for more information on medical waste and its proper disposal.
Sharps - All Pharmacies in NS provide containers for diabetic needles and lancets and accept the full container free of charge. All other needles can be brought to VWRM in a tightly sealed container, free of charge. Do not place needles inside plastic pop bottles.

Remember the 3 R’s? Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Generations before us knew the value of many of the things we now throw away; resources weren’t taken for granted. It’s time to heed the wisdom of days gone by and start reusing all that we can. If you can’t reuse the item around the house in another way, think of whether that item could be useful to others in your community.
REUSE – THE FORGOTTEN “R”
Don’t throw it all away. Consider donating these items to local
charities, used goods stores or selling them
through a consignment shop or community
auction. Contact Valley Waste for organizations
in your area.
Books, Toys & Furniture
Often, a lot of good quality, lightly used clothing and footwear are tossed out in our garbage. Instead, consider the many local
organizations and charities that can reuse and recycle
your old clothing…
• The Beehive Adult Service Centre• Flowercart• The Salvation Army• Canadian Red Cross• Canadian Diabetes Association• Carleton Road Industries Assoc.
Clothing
Freecycle and Kijiji are two examples of online
ways to trade goods with others. Kijiji.ca is
an online buy and sell of products and services. Freecycle.org is similar
except that all items offered must be FREE. The great news is that
both websites have sections devoted to the
Annapolis Valley.
Freecycle & Kijiji
If you have unwanted canned
and dry goods, local food banks
are always in need of food donations – not just during the
holidays.
Food Bank
One of the most steadfast ways to reuse.
And Valley residents definitely know how to have a yard sale! Many Towns have town-wide yard sales but if your municipality doesn’t, consider teaming up with your neighbours
to maximize its success.

Holiday Waste Reduction TipEver feel like we have too much “stuff”? Stop trying to find some THING for the person who has everything. They might appreciate home baked goods, tickets to a holiday concert, a gift certificate for a dinner out or a donation made in their name to a worthy cause.
We get lots of questions each year about holiday waste. Below are the most commonly asked.
