Maccabi

Wednesday, January 25 | 6 pm | at the JCC Karen James is a former world class athlete with a diverse background in education, real estate, and athletics. Karen started her journey as a competitive swimmer in the Maccabiah Games in Israel at the age of 12 and went on to become a member of Canada’s Olympic Swim Team participating in the 1972 Games in Munich. Her personal experiences of the hostage taking and the surrounding terrifying events had a deep impact on Karen’s life. It was only more than 20 years later, after marrying and raising 3 children, that Karen was able to begin to share her story of what had happened. When Vancouver hosted the JCC Maccabi Games in 2006, Karen stepped forward and told her story for the first time, in front of 10,000 people. Less than a year later she visited Israel on a Federation mission and the rest is history.Kick off Maccabi with us as we listen to Karen James speak about her career and help us welcome our 2012 Team Phoenix athletes!

We will also be launching our NEW Koach Maccabi Club for 10-12 year olds. Youth, families, friends, and alumni are all welcome to attend! A pizza dinner will be served.Free. With advance registration. $10 at the door per family.Code: MGKO Call the Welcome Desk at 480.483.7121 ext. 1230.

MaccabiCaring by Pairing JCC Team PhoenixChildren’s New Athletic Shoe DriveJanuary 25Our goal is to provide new athletic shoes to local Arizona children-in-need so that they can participate in school and recreational activities with dignity and on an equal footing with their peers. Poverty is in our own backyards; a surprisingly large percentage of our local Arizona children come from financially impoverished families. These children often times wear just socks, “flip-flops” or ill-fitting, worn/torn shoes to school, making it difficult for them to participate in routine school or recreational activities. Having appropriate footwear, let alone properly fitting athletic shoes, is a luxury for these children. In light of the Valley’s congregation and organizations’ commitment to supporting meaningful community efforts, Caring by Pairing is a great way to give back, help those that are vulnerable and in need of support and share the notion that the smallest gift or act of kindness (a new pair of shoes) can make a difference.Detailed information to follow at the Kick off event. Athletic shoes can be dropped off at the JCC.For information on how to donate athletic shoes, contact Alex Sachs at [email protected]. or call ext. 1703.

The unexpected death of the family patriarch throws every member of the Ulman clan off course. Widow Dafna takes to bed for three months and when she finally returns to her job at the maternity hospital, she has little time for her children. Eldest

son, Yair drops out of school and adopts a fatalist attitude, shutting out his siblings and girlfriend. His twin sister Maya, a talented musician, feels the most guilt and is forced to act as a family caregiver at the expense of career opportunities. Bullied at school, younger son Ido responds by obsessively filming himself with a video camera and attempting dangerous feats. The baby sister, Bar, is woefully neglected. Preoccupied with their own misery, the family is barely a family anymore. When another tragedy strikes, will they be able to support one another?M: $5 NM: $8 Code: SM1Please RSVP by January 16. Volunteers Needed

Ha’ulpan(A Hebrew Lesson) Thursday, February 23 | 7 - 9 pmLearning Hebrew has been central to establishing one‘s personal identity and sense of collective belonging. Language transcends political, religious and ideological divisions; it is what unites and coalesces the different parts of society. -The Jewish Agency pamphlet for Hebrew Ulpan teachers.Chin left her daughter in China and came to Israel to make a living. She cleaned Ehud’s house, and they fell in love. Sasha never considered immigrating to Israel, but four years after his woman left Russia with their daughter he understood that life without his child is worthless. He left a thriving business behind only to find himself in Tel Aviv‘s worst neighborhood.Marisol grew up as a Jewish Princess in Lima, Peru and came to Israel to learn something about life. J GalleryFreddie Lieberman, a local award-winning contemporary artist, has had a paintbrush in her hand for most of her life. After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Illinois, she taught art for a few years before starting her own business designing and painting wall graphics, murals, faux finishes on walls and furniture and later portrait chairs and benches, free-standing life-size celebrities and pet portraits. Six years ago she followed a long held dream to do contemporary canvas paintings. Immediate success confirmed this decision and now her intensely colored resin coated paintings adorn the walls of her many collectors and admirers.
