Season Preview the fairmont State volleyball program has steadily increased its win total in each of the last three seasons, building from 19 wins, to 20 wins, to 23 wins last season. the 23 wins were the most in over a decade, and the falcons did it with a relatively young squad. that young squad returns mostly intact. while the falcons did graduate to large contributors in Morgan walls (school’s all-time leader in digs) and Jess Seevers (who left fSU ranked in the top 10 in assists), the falcons still return several key players and added talented depth that will allow fSU to compete at the top of the conference standings and inside the atlantic region. Junior outside hitter Bri Swann headlines the returners this year. Swann completed a stellar sophomore campaign that saw her earn first team all-wviaC and second team all-atlantic region honors. Swann was among the conference leaders in kills (506) and kills per set (3.95). Swann has superior physical talents that she combines with her volleyball intelligence making her a complete weapon for fSU. She has also become more of a vocal leader as she heads into her third season with the falcons. freshmen Kaitlyn witsaman and erin Harwood come from competitive club teams to provide depth at the position. witsaman is an all-around hitter with a variety of swings, while Harwood brings her “beach style” of play to the indoor game, and both should compete for playing time. Junior amber wilson is a dynamic player who leads the falcons in the middle. wilson was second only to Swann on the team in kills with 410 but also led the team in total blocks with 110 while earning all-wviaC honorable mention honors a season ago. wilson looks to provide stability and increased offense from the middle attack. Sophomore Kara Crabill saw significant time as a freshman last year and adjusted well to the speed of the college game, and is a strong blocker for the falcons in the middle. freshman Courtney Kress could give the falcons an immediate boost in the lineup as she gives the falcons a different look on offense in the middle. On the right side, junior leslie Giordon has increased her contributions in each of her previous two seasons. She is back on the right side this year where she has worked to increase her arm speed and accuracy. Giordan is a smart player who makes good and creative decisions on the pin. Junior alli Bertozzi is a strong player on the right side who hits the ball with a lot of pace. freshman autumn ross is a strong and physical player whose intensity provides her an opportunity to fight for time on the floor this season. the offense should go through sophomore tabbie Bias this year. Bias saw action in 28 matches last year, but will be counted on to be the primary setter this year. She has a strong desire to connect with each and every setter and will be a good leader for the offense. freshman Jess Margo has good size and will compete for time as well behind Bias.

On defense, tiff Smathers takes over as the defensive specialist. Smathers did play in all 36 matches last season as a freshman, but her role is now increased with the loss of walls. Smathers had a good spring and has become a vocal leader. Her competitiveness and aggressiveness should pay off for the falcons on defense. Junior Katherine Herrera has increased her contributions to fSU in each of her previous two seasons, and will be counted on to contribute even more this season. She provides the falcons with consistency and ball control as a defensive specialist. Coach larry Hill, entering his 28th season with the falcons, likes the competitiveness in practice that he’s seen in the early parts of the preseason. He feels that that competitiveness will lead to quality depth during the season, allowing his team to use a variety of combinations on the court to match-up with opponents. fairmont State was picked to finish sixth in the wviaC preseason poll, but the falcons could be quietly putting together a team that will make noise in the league and in the region here in 2012.

Prior to Hill’s becoming the volleyball coach at fairmont, he was as assistant football coach for 13 seasons with the falcons. Born in weston, w.va., Hill attended east fairmont High School, where he participated in football and track and was named all-Big ten and all-Marion County for his play. Hill then took his athletic talents to fairmont State, where he was a four-year letterman in football and was named all-wviaC as a linebacker helping the falcons to three, one-loss seasons during his career. He went on to serve on the coaching staff of the 1967 national championship team at fairmont State. Hill received his master’s degree from west virginia University in 1968. for the next two years Hill served in the United States army. He returned to fairmont State in the fall of 1970, and has been a coach and professor in the Division of HHP since that time. Hill also served as the head baseball coach for four years (1980-1983) and enjoyed a tremendous season in 1982 directing a team that went 21-13 (15-3 wviaC) and won the northern Division Championship of the wviaC. Hill is married to the former Joyce lynn antolini.

Head Coach28th Season

One of the most successful and consistent coaches in volleyball, head coach larry Hill begins his 29th season at the helm of the fairmont State volleyball program. He ranks ninth in nCaa Division ii for victories among active head coaches with a mark of 582-469 – more than any other coach in the wviaC. the falcons have had 19 winning times under Hill’s leadership and have posted 16 seasons of 20 wins or more, including each of the last two seasons. Coach Hill has led the fairmont State program since its inception in 1984, and has been named wviaC Coach of the year four times (1985, 1988, 1990 and 1998). Coach Hill has directed the falcons to 20 wins or more on 16 occasions, including each of the last two years, and led the team to a school-record 42 wins in 1990. He has guided the fighting falcons to four wviaC titles (1998, 1990, 1998 and 1999) and had players earn first team all-wviaC honors 32 times. He coached three athletes who earned wviaC Player of the year honors in Jackie Burks (1988), tracey rowe (1989) and Courtney fochtman (1994). fochtman and theresa Haggerty are members of the fairmont State athletic Hall of fame. last season, the falcons posted back-to-back 20-win seasons by posting a 23-13 record. fairmont State finished tied for fifth in the conference and Bri Swann was a first team all-wviaC and second team Daktronics all-atlantic region selection. in 2010, the falcons notched a 20-10 record, finished second in the conference regular season standings and had a pair of first team all-wviaC selections. three seasons ago, the falcons fell just one victory short of a 20-win season finishing with a 19-16 mark, but snapped a three-year skid finishing under .500. Hill coached second team selection Micah Bell, and helped develop Meagan Gibson into one of the more dominant players in the league as she led the wviaC in kills and kills per game. in 2007, Hill won his 500th career match on Sept. 26, 2007, against Ohio valley. in 2005, Hill led fairmont State to its 16th winning season with a 20-19 record and the team posted an impressive 14-4 record inside the wviaC and advanced to the semifinals of the league tournament. He helped Skinner earn first team all-wviaC honors. in 1998, Hill was selected as the atlantic region nCaa ii Coach of the year. that season, the falcons finished first in the region with a 23-1 record and hosted the regional tournament. another career milestone came on Sept. 12, 2000, as he garnered his 400th career win against Glenville.

as a Marion County native and a fairmont State graduate, no one embodies the passion of falcon athletics like rusty elliott. elliott, who has been associated with fairmont State for nearly three decades, was named athletic director in august of 2007. last season, elliott continued to navigate the fairmont State athletic department to academic, athletic and civic excellence. the athletic department again boasted one of the top grade-point averages in the country at 75 percent, had three teams earn all-academic honors (men’s and women’s cross country and women’s swimming), and three individuals earned academic all-america honors. in addition, fSU student-athletes were highly visible in local schools and volunteering in a variety of capacities throughout north Central west virginia. He was also President of the wviaC athletic directors in 2011-12. in 2010-11, fairmont State continued its excellence both on and off the field. Once again, fSU boasted the highest grade-point average among student-

athletes in the state of west virginia at a staggering 76 percent. Under elliott’s direction, fundraising and sponsorship dollars have continued to grow in support of increased scholarship dollars for athletics. in the spring of 2011, elliott traveled to indianapolis to accept an award for the best community engagement initiative in the country for the school’s “Put your Best fairmont forward” idea that helped attract nearly 6,000 fans for fairmont State’s nationally televised game against west liberty and helped collect books and canned food for the community. in 2009-10, three fairmont State teams advanced to nCaa Championships in historic fashion. the men’s and women’s basketball teams made it to the nCaa tournament in the same year for the first time in school history, and the softball team earned its first-ever nCaa tournament bid. in addition to the on-field accomplishments, the nCaa released its graduation rate in January 2010 and fairmont State’s student-athletes boasted the top graduation rate of any school in the state of west virginia. in the spring of 2010, the fSU athletic department was recognized as the wviaC winner in the nCaa Division ii’s Community engagement initiative. in 2008, elliott oversaw an athletic department that saw fairmont State finish third in the wviaC President’s Cup. the men’s golf team once again captured a wviaC title and advanced to the nCaa Championships, the men’s basketball team recorded 20 wins, the softball team set a school record for conference victories and finished runner-up in the league and the baseball team captured the wviaC Central Division championship. in his first year as athletic director, fairmont State won a pair of conference championships in women’s basketball and men’s golf, with each of those teams advancing to the nCaa tournament. the football team, playing its first season on a brand-new playing surface, finished with a winning record and the men’s basketball team finished with 19 victories. He is married to the former Mary Jo thorne, and they are the parents of two daughters, Devan (17), and addie, (7), and two sons, ryan (15), and Kyle (12).
