A four-time Blues team captain and two-time all-Canadian, Anthony Capotosto joined the Blues men’s soccer program as head coach in 2007 after two years as an assistant to Carmine Isacco.

Capotosto was an assistant coach to the 1998 men’s soccer Blues and after graduation also served on the Blues women’s soccer staff in 2003. He rejoined the men’s staff in 2005, and has helped guide the team to berths in fi ve of the past seven CIS championship tournaments.

An OUA all-star defender in all fi ve of his seasons with the Blues (1997, 1999-2002), Capotosto was named a fi rst team all-Canadian in 2000 and 2001. He also claimed OUA East MVP honours in 2000 and 2001, and in his fi nal playing season captained the Blues to the 2002 OUA title.

Capotosto holds a Canadian National ‘B’ coaching licence and United States Soccer Federation National ‘C’ and ‘Y’ licences. In the spring of 2008, Anthony travelled to England for a 10-day coaching apprenticeship with Ipswich Town Football Club of the English First Division. Following that, he served as an assistant coach with the Italia Shooters of the Canadian Soccer League for the duration of the summer.

In 2010, Capotosto travelled back to England for another 10-day coaching apprenticeship with Plymouth Argyle FC where he worked closely with former Toronto FC head coach John Carver and Paul Mariner, TFC’s new director of player development.

Anthony continues to serve as the Toronto FC Academy and currently is an assistant coach to Jason Bent (head coach) for their senior academy team that competes in the Canadian Soccer League (CSL).

A graduate of U of T’s Faculty of Arts and Science (2002), Capotosto earned his B.Ed at OISE in 2003. He has taught physical education at Scarborough’s Agincourt Collegiate Institute since 2003.

2012 SEASON

PREVIEW

Anthony Capotosto enters his sixth season as Blues bench boss and looks to guide a young Varsity Blues squad to their fourth consecutive OUA fi nal and CIS championship berth. Two-time OUA East MVP and CIS all-Canadian Darragh McGee returns for his fi fth sea-son. The team captain leads a strong back line in 2012, including the likes of third-year veterans Killian Elkinson and Jean Giroux. Sophomore standouts Nikola Paunic and Justin Liendo round out the returning defenders, while newcomers Jason Cordeiro, Michael Evans and Tyrell Rayne are also expected to contribute in 2012. Ezequiel Lubocki enters his third year with the Blues and leads an impressive midfi eld core. The Winnipeg native is joined by fellow OUA all-star Dylan Bams, as well as fourth-year veteran Ryan Sciacchitano. Veljko Lukovic and Mehdi Salemi will be constant in the rotation, while fi rst-year player Christopher Mannella looks to crack a spot in the starting line-up. OUA all-star Mario Kovacevic, the team’s 2011 leading scorer, is back to lead a young, talented group of strikers. Jeremaine Burrell looks to turn it up a notch after a year of experience with the team, with fi rst-year players Marko Miketic and Adrian Dannel ex-pected to make an immediate impact. With the loss of two-time OUA all-star John Smits, Capotosto turns to rookie goalkeeper Rab Bruce-Lockhart to lead the Blues in net. The Victoria, B.C., native will be backed by fellow rookie Anthony Spanopulos.

RECORD MANUALThe University of Toronto men’s soccer program continues to be one of the best in the nation and upholds a tradition of success and accomplishment that stretches back 130 years. Organized soccer was fi rst introduced to the U of T campus in 1876, when the University of Toronto Football Club abandoned a traditional local set of football rules in favour of the then-novel “Association game.” The current team was established in 1879, making it one of the oldest in North America. The Blues dominated the Ontario-Quebec interuniversity league for much of the 20th century, capturing 43 league titles between 1904 and 1968, including 17 championships in the 1950s and 60s. This tradition of excellence continues to the present day. For the past two decades, the U of T men’s soccer team has been consistently ranked in the top 10 in the country and has reached the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championships 12 times since 1986, bringing home the national title in 1988 and a silver medal in 2005. Varsity Blues soccer also regularly attracts some of the top high school student-athletes from Ontario and across the country. In 1989 the entire Varsity Blues squad represented Canada at the World University Championship and captured the silver medal. Since 1979, 43 Varsity Blues have been named CIS all-Canadians, including Mark Purdy, Peter Sarantopoulos, Joe Demiglio and Mike Bialy.

VARSITY BLUES – 1988 CIAU CHAMPIONS

In 1988, the Varsity Blues men’s soccer team claimed the nation’s top prize, a CIAU championship, for the fi rst time in U of T history.

The Blues wrapped up the regular season schedule with a near perfect 15-1-1 record, scoring 42 goals and allowing just 12. In the post-season, U of T opened their title run with a 1-0 penalty kick victory over Carleton before slipping past Queen’s 4-2 in the provincial semifi nals and shutting out Western 2-0 to claim the OUAA crown. At the national championship, the Blues defeated number-one ranked Alberta (2-1) with goals from Pat Cubellis

and George Argyropoulos. And in the fi nal, Cubellis notched the game’s only marker in a 1-0 victory over McGill. The team then capped off their storybook season at the World University Soccer Championship in Arizona, where they represented Canada and earned a silver medal.

The success of this squad, which was led by 1988 OUAA coach of the year Jim Lefkos, can be attributed to their tremendous depth, determination and incredible team chemistry. Seven Varsity Blues were named OUAA all-stars, with Cubellis and Coz Zambazis also garnering all-Canadian honours.

The 1988-89 championship team included Terry Apostolou (Manager), George Argyropoulos, Chris Collie, David Collie, Pat Cubellis, John Diniz, Patrick Fancott, John Fitzgerald, Guido Geisler, Domenic Ientile, Alan Kennedy, Ben Kwak, Tom Lazarou, Rod MacGregor, (therapist) Dino Mastrogianis, William Murray, Robert Pacas, Bill Papaconstantinou, Nino Perrotta, Peter Sarantopoulos, Tony Tata, Tom Tsilfi dis, Mark Varkul, Coz Zambazis and head coach Jim Lefkos.
