The Varsity Blues fi eld hockey team continued their winning ways with a 5-2 victory over the Guelph Gryphons in the OUA gold medal game on Sunday, October 28 in Waterloo, Ont.

With the win, the Blues improve to a perfect 14-0-0 heading into the 2012 CIS fi eld hockey championship, hosted by the University of Toronto, November 1-4 at Varsity Centre. Toronto, Guelph, Western, UBC and Victoria are all set to battle for national supremacy.

Five different Varsity Blues scored en route to Toronto’s second consecutive and sixth OUA banner in the past nine seasons. The Blues have won a league-leading 29 provincial titles since 1971.

The game got off to a thrilling start as U of T’s Lauren Mansfi eld let a blistering shot go from 15 feet out to beat Gryphons goalie Kaye McLagan in the 3rd minute.

The Gryphons wasted little time as OUA rookie of the year Allison Chute tipped the ball past Blues goalie Katherine Williams (Burlington, Ont.) on the ensuing drive to even the score. The game remained 1-1 at the half.

The skies opened up in the second half, but despite the downpour, the Blues did not lose their focus . Toronto took over midway through the frame, with four goals in a 13-minute span to cruise to victory.

Sophomore midfi elder Amanda Woodcroft (Waterloo, Ont.) opened the fl ood gates off a short corner setup by Tegan Stairs. The Blues would extend their lead to 3-1 as Rachel Fackoury (Maryhill, Ont.) fi nished off a perfect pass by Kelley Lusk (North Vancouver).

Tegan Stairs got in on the action with a tic-tac-toe play with her sister, Emma, to make it 4-1 in favour of the Blues. Toronto leading scorer Ally Evanyshyn added one more in the 66th minute before OUA player of the year Brittany Seidler scored one for the Gryphons.

2012 OUA All-Stars

Veteran defender Kaelan Watson and midfi elders Tegan Stairs and Amanda Woodcroft all earned all-star status as Ontario University Athletics (OUA) announced the 2012 OUA fi eld hockey major awards and all-stars, sponsored by Harrow Sports, on Tuesday morning.

A Richmond, B.C., native, Watson earns her fi fth consecutive OUA all-star nod. The physical education major helped lead the Varsity Blues to a perfect 12-0 season, scoring fi ve goals and backstopping U of T to the fewest goals against in the OUA.

Woodcroft, the 2011 OUA and CIS rookie of the year, receives her second straight all-star recognition. The Waterloo, Ont., native scored six goals in 12 games this year. Third-year Guelph transfer Tegan Stairs shined in her fi rst season with the Blues. Stairs (Kitchener, Ont.) netted 11 goals, ranking fourth in the province, to garner her second-career all-star award.

The Varsity Blues head to Waterloo, Ont., this weekend to defend their provincial title at the 2012 OUA fi eld hockey championship, Oct. 26-28, at Warrior Field. A full championship preview will be posted tomorrow.

VARSITY BLUES \ \ \ \ \ \ \

RECORD MANUALFor over forty years the University of

Toronto has been central to the growth

of fi eld hockey as a Canadian university

sport. Since the early 1960s, fi eld

hockey has fl ourished and the U of T

Varsity Blues have created a tradition of

excellence and achievement at both the

provincial and national levels.

The foundations were laid early, when

the Varsity Blues captured their fi rst

Ontario-Quebec university fi eld hockey

championship in 1963. That victory

was just the beginning, with U of T

going on to claim an incredible 29 OUA

championships and 11 national titles.

The Varsity Blues are also the leaders

in “fi rsts”, winning the inaugural OWIAA

outdoor title in 1971, capturing the

inaugural CIS outdoor championship

in 1975 and claiming the fi rst Ontario

indoor hockey banner in 1985. U of

T women’s fi eld hockey also had an

incredible run from 1963 to 1979, going

an amazing 17 season without a single

loss in league play.

Liz Hoffman continued the emerging

dynasty in 1974, coaching the Blues

for the next 20 seasons and retiring

in 1994 to become U of T’s Director of

Athletics. Under her guidance the team

won 16 Ontario league titles and eight

CIAU championships.

Following Hoffman’s retirement, Beth

Ali took the reins and soon posted three

consecutive undefeated seasons (1995-

1997). The winning streak continued,

with the Varsity Blues claiming eight of

11 OUA championships. At the national

level, Ali captured a CIAU crown in

1996, a silver medal in 2000 and six

bronze medals (1995, 1997, 1998,

2004, 2005, 2006) before retiring at the

end of the 2006-07 season.

Carrying on this successful coaching

tradition is John De Souza, Blues

assistant coach for 18 years. A

provincial player for 13 years and a

national team player for seven years,

De Souza coached the national indoor

fi eld hockey team in 2007 and was

the assistant coach with the 2007 Pan

American team that won gold and

represented Canada at the 2008 Beijing

Olympics.

In total, Varsity teams have won 40

outdoor championships (29 provinicial

and 11 national) plus 15 Ontario indoor

titles. The program has produced

numerous athletes for Canada’s junior

and senior national teams, as well as

eight Olympians, 74 CIS all-Canadians

since 1985, ten inductees to the U of

T Sports Hall of Fame and eight U of T

Athletes of the Year.

BLUES WIN INAUGURAL CWIAU FIELD HOCKEY TITLEIn 1975 the U of T women’s fi eld

hockey team (pictured at left) not only

captured the inaugural CWIAU cham-

pionship, but with that victory became

the fi rst Varsity Blues women’s squad

to earn a national university title. The

team was inducted into the U of T

Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.

Led by head coach Liz Hoffman, the

team qualifi ed for the fi rst Canadian

university championship with an impres-

sive display at the OWIAA champion-

ships at York University. The Varsity

Blues won their 13th straight OWIAA

title with a 7-0 record, while outscoring

the opposition by an impressive 27-0

margin.

At the CWIAU championship hosted by

the University of British Columbia, U of

T opened the round-robin portion of the

event with a pair of shutout victories

over Lakehead (2-0) and McGill (3-0).

The Varsity Blues started the second

day of competition with a 3-0 win over

Dalhousie, before falling 3-2 on penalty

strokes to the University of Victoria in

their fi nal match of round robin play.

The 3-1 record earned U of T a three-

way tie for fi rst place with UVic and

Dalhousie. U of T claimed the top spot

on goal differential and with it, a place

in the fi nals versus UVic.

After a scoreless opening half in the

fi nal, U of T’s Anne Hofl and scored early

in the second stanza to give U of T a

1-0 advantage, a lead that they would

never relinquish. The Varsity Blues

then controlled play until the fi nal horn

to earn the inaugural national crown.

Carol MacDougall paced U of T with a

three-goal tournament, while Diana Mil-

lar, Anne Hofl and and co-captain Susan

Scott added two goals apiece.
